DIY Exorcism

Rate this book
Dante Mitchell is a husband, a father, and a pastor in a small Ohio town. Being a community figure comes with inherited pressure as he steps into the shoes of his late father.

With expectations mounting, his life is crumbling around him as he tries to manage his personal issues, along with the separation from his wife.

As Dante adapts to the new arrangements, his godly duties, commitment to his community, and the shared parenting of his ten year-old son, Mason, he manages to do it all…until one weekend his son begins to act out of character.

It is clear that evil has slithered into their nest when one night conflict leads to Dante handcuffing his son to the furnace in the basement. He believes his son to be possessed.

Desperation looms with few options to maintain his highly regarded public image, and keep this heinous act from his ex-wife a secret.

Where prayers go unanswered, search results do not, as he seeks help from the internet to perform an exorcism on his son.
If you want something done right, do it yourself.

Things are made more complicated as Dante and his son face very different demons.
The isolating torment that follows demonstrates that some things are better left to professionals.

Read this one again, and wow—really good.

This isn’t just a possession story. It’s a slow, spiraling breakdown of a man trying to keep it together—for his son, for his church, for his sanity. Dante’s unraveling is both terrifying and deeply human, and watching him navigate grief, guilt, and growing dread is brutal in the best way.

The horror sneaks in quietly at first, then barrels into the second half like it’s possessed too. The imagery is intense, and the emotional tension between father and son gutted me. I kept thinking: Would I know if someone I loved had changed? What would I do if I couldn’t fix it?

There’s a lot here—religious trauma, parental fear, mental health—but it never feels preachy. Just heavy. Messy. Real.

Considering I am the author of this novel, it feels weird to me to review my own book.

With that said, I do believe that this is a testament to my own growth as a writer, and also highlights my willingness to pivot along the way, and really let a character unravel to move the story.

I am incredibly proud of this story and where the idea started, and what it became by the time I decided it was ready to publish.

I am grateful to those who have listened to me blabber on about this book over the last few years while I was developing the idea.

This book should show my maturity as a writer, and also has meaningful dialogue to be had after you've read it. I've never wrote a book with something to say, and this book has that.

I feel like I'm tooting my horn too much, this is just as uncomfortable for me as it is for you.
Please buy my book, etc... etc... I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

Wow! What can I say about this book other than the fact that it was so amazingly well written and horrific. The tension was thick, and the build-up was fantastic. As you read, the dread is palpable, and you can't help but turn the page to see what happens next. Loved it! It's a brilliant piece of storytelling. You are a master at your craft, my friend.

A book about demon possession but with a twist which will alter your perception of what you've just read.

Dante is a preacher, having taken over for his father, and he's an outstanding member of his church and community. But he's wore down from all the things he must do in the background.

His wife divorces him and has a new boyfriend but they each share custody with their 10 year old son. On a weekly visit to Dante's, his son starts behaving oddly. Sulking and argumentive, even violent. Things escalate from there when it becomes apparent that this behaviour isn't natural.

We'll see what transpires as events spin out of control. Dante loves his son but he can't let others know what's going on because of his stellar reputation. So he decides to do an exorcism of his own. It's not going to go well!

You get all of the creepy terrifying things you'd expect from a demonic possession novel but it's at the end when revalations hit that you'll see the horrifying truth.

This novel hits all the notes and leaves you breathless at the end. I highly recommend it.

I was sent a copy from the author. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.

I've become friends with David over the years, and I often share my work with him to get his honest opinion. So, when I asked if I could be an ARC reader for this one and he agreed, I jumped at the chance! Having been an ARC reader for "The Tickle Monster," which is still one of my favorite books, I had high expectations for this one.

David absolutely exorcised those expectations, blowing them out of the water! As a father, this story really creeped me out to the point where I nearly had to sleep with the lights on—talk about a haunting experience! It's well-written and spine-chilling! I highly recommend this book; it's sure to raise your spirits!

This was a very sad story, a nasty trip through mental health issues and religious horror. It went places I did not expect, and the ending, though predictable after the second half of the book, still hurt and messed me up. Excellent storytelling coupled with some very good understanding of the pressures religious people face. There are no saints in this story - but there are demons. My single complaint would be that this turned out not to be the book I thought I'd be reading! The whole thing is a set up, but ultimately I was not disappointed: this is a story I would have regretted not picking up myself.

Pastor Dante is stuck in a rut, his marriage has fallen apart, his relationship with his son is on the rocks, and he’s struggling as the new head of the church after his father’s passing. Now, to make matters much worse, his son Mason is acting increasingly abnormal- is this a pre teen acting out, or something much darker?

Washburn’s take on possession is genuinely horrifying. I really enjoyed the increasing weird and disturbing events, leading to one of the most tense fictional scenes I’ve read in a while.

While I understand the main character is a preacher, I did feel a little like some of the sermons/religious aspects were being force fed to me as I was reading. I do understand the faith and questioning of it is a big part of the plot, but that’s just my opinion (not a huge fan of organized religion).

The ending was quite shocking, not what I was expecting based off of all the incidents that occurred.

I’ll definitely be checking out more from this author!

I basically inhaled this book, and I'm so incredibly glad I got this one after eyeing it for a while!

What would you do if you thought your kid was possessed by a demon? Well, small town pastor Dante is already feeling the pressure of navigating being a single dad after the separation with his wife, feeling like he isn't living up to his father's legacy as town pastor, he decides to figure it out himself when his son Mason starts showing signs of demonic possession. enter into Google search and you have yourself a DIY Exorcism .....

This story is well developed, unhinged (which is how I like my horror best) and took me by surprise!

DIY Exorcism

What a surprising read! It’s like watching a possession film that’s filmed from a handheld camera that you found in the attic of an abandoned house. You spend the whole time internally screaming at the dad, then you’re like oh crap something is happening! Then it follows with AH! What are you doing sir?? Then we finish with WHAT!
Definitely wasn’t expecting things to go the way they did, but it was good. Fun horror read!

Seems like it was a slow burn at first, but it might have been because I was dragging it so much.

However, the second half of the book was really great!

I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s not like your usual “possession” stories/books.

Overall I did actually enjoyed it and the second half made it all worth while.

I recommend!

This book is terrifying.

That’s it. That’s the whole review.

Just kidding. 😆

Washburn’s latest novel, DIY EXORCISM, is a twisted gut-punch of a story that will have you questioning every possession book you’ve ever read. His descriptions are vivid and lifelike, and the emotional stakes are some of the best I’ve seen in a horror novel. I had to stop several times while reading this to say a prayer and meditate on pieces of scripture for my own sanity, which I think is a demented, high praise for the author. Well done!

I can’t wait to read more from Washburn.

With such an on the nose title, one would expect DIY Exorcism to be your typical demonic possession story. While this comes to play, it is not the focus, and the tale has surprising things to say about the societal pressure of being strong for your family and community without asking for help.

Dante Mitchell is a small town pastor who inherits his father's flock before he feels he is ready to step up into this role. Fed up with him putting everyone else's needs ahead of hers, his wife Grace leaves him, adding single parent to his ever growing list of responsibilities. Jealous of the time his son Mason is spending with his mother's new, younger boyfriend, Dante tries to impart a disciplined home life on Mason, which he had readily accepted until one night when he rebels. Alarmed by this out of character behavior, pastor Dante turns to the Bible, and when that fails, the logical next choice, the Internet. Although written in third person, present tense, which is usually my least favorite style of story telling, this one managed to keep up a quick pace and kept me on the hook. I easily binged it in two sittings because I wanted to know what happened next. There were parts that had me squirming with discomfort, as much for my own reactions as the descriptions on page, and other parts that made me laugh out loud with the deadpan delivery. I found myself strongly relating to Grace's plight and thought "good for her" when she finally did something about her unhappiness, and I think most parents will relate to Dante's feelings of helplessness as he tried to protect his child in the best way he knew how. While I did see the twist coming, it still had a strong impact and important message that we all should heed. Having read much of the author's previous work, I could see vast improvement in nuance and writing style in his sophomore full length novel.

"DIY Exorcism" follows Dante, a local pastor whose son's behavior ultimately leads to Dante handcuffing him to the basement furnace. Dante is convinced that there is a demon lurking in his son, and he takes to the internet to search for how to perform an exorcism, all while trying to protect his reputation within his community as a pastor and father.

This was wild, and if I had a few words to describe this story, they would be horrifying and anxiety-inducing. As a parent of a pre-teen, it was relatable to the noise and outbursts that children at that age seem to have. The whole time I was reading this novel, I had fears of Dante getting caught with his child handcuffed to the furnace in his basement. He has prior community obligations during the time Dante is trying to perform an exorcism on his child. A lot of people are going to know he is missing. The whole thing is just nerve-wracking. The anxiety I felt was immense, with questions going through my head, like: How is this going to play out? Will anyone believe him? Is he going to get caught? Will he be able to help his son? What will his son's mother think? Is this really happening? Not only was the anxiety at play here, but also the added element of the scary and impossible things Dante was experiencing with his sweet baby boy.

The ending was incredible! It was not at all what I was expecting, and let me tell you, by then I had a million scenarios running through my head. I was left with a big twist, and it was worth the ride.

This seemingly short, terrifying paranormal possession horror story is worth reading. Trust me.

I blew through this book! If I didn’t have to work or sleep, I would have had it done a lot sooner haha. DIY Exorcism follows Dante Mitchell, a pastor in a small town. It doesn’t take long before his son starts acting strangely. The writing is stellar, and it was crazy following the events throughout. ! I love a good demon/possession story and this book hit all those marks. This needs to be on everyone’s TBR as we enter into Halloween and spooky season!

Thank you David Washburn and Book Sirens for the opportunity to read this one early.

Wow, Dante! This book was not at all what I thought it was going to be. There's so much more to it than demonic possession, so many layers, dark and deep that make this book so insanely real. This is the first I've read by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more by Washburn.

This novella deals with deep subjects that dysfunctional families deal with, like divorce of parents and how it affects the family as a whole unit.

It will rip the reader apart. Bring lots of tissues. The pacing is awesome. There are some religious tones throughout the book.

DIY Exorcism is one of the most underrated books I’ve read. It had me hooked from the start and questioning everything—is Mason really possessed, or is Dante just spiraling? The tension is unreal.

Watching a desperate father try to perform an exorcism using the internet was wild, emotional, and completely believable. I couldn’t put it down. Every chapter had me on edge.

DIY Exorcism by David Washburn is Absolutely Fantastic! 5 stars and would give more if I could. I was captivated from the start because the story and family dynamic were instantly relatable. The authors writing style has a flow that makes it easy to stay engaged and immerses the reader directly into the story. The title gives the reader an idea of what may happen however the escalation of the how and why were like a loop the loop roller coaster I honestly didn’t see coming. WOW. I found myself still thinking about Dante and his wellbeing after the book ended. I applaud David Washburn for this story. I loved it! DIY Exorcism is at the top of my list for favorite reads this year.

I stumbled upon DIY Exorcism by David Washburn while exploring the psychological thriller genre, and with "Exorcism" in the title, it immediately grabbed my attention. As a fan of thrillers and horror, it was impossible to resist—and I'm glad I didn’t, because this book delivers an experience far beyond its eerie promise.

Initially, I cringed through the first 50 pages, not because of the plot, but due to the present tense narration and some details about Pastor Dante’s life. The inclusion of church themes and Bible citations isn’t my usual preference, but the unreliable narration, intense isolation, and psychological trauma pulled me in, giving the book a firm grip on the psychological thriller genre.

The story centers around Pastor Dante, who’s struggling with grief, divorce, and the pressure to step into his father's shoes, all of which push him to the edge. The depth of Dante's mental state, his shifts in perception, and the constant questioning of reality are portrayed with such care that you can't help but wonder how much of what you’re reading is real. His internal unraveling makes him an unreliable narrator, which kept me on my toes the entire time.

The isolated setting is perfect—Dante is shut away in his house, completely alone, save for one other presence: his son, Mason, whom he believes is possessed by a demon. The chilling dynamic of Dante holding his own son in the basement as he prepares for an exorcism makes the tension almost unbearable at times. It’s psychological horror at its finest, blending trauma, paranoia, and fear into a masterful narrative.

This isn’t just a thriller about exorcism, it’s a deep dive into the fragile human psyche. If you’re looking for a book that’s captivating, unsettling, and impossible to put down, I highly recommend DIY Exorcism. It’s a mind-bending read that leaves a lasting impression.

Sensational

The moment I saw the cover, I knew I had to dive into this book. David Washburn really nailed it with this intense story about a young boy who seems to be possessed by the devil. From Mason cowering in corners crying and then laughing, able to switch between Mason and possessed Mason, right through to the eerie, repetitive phrases that will make your skin crawl, the vivid descriptions will make you feel like you're right there, living the nightmare.

This isn't your typical possession story. You'd think that being a pastor, with holy water, the cross, a bible, and the lords prayer in hand would do it, think again. The action in this book is non-stop, and the contrast between Mason and "possessed Mason" chilled me to the bone.

Washburn really got into the devil's mind, delivering an unsettling experience that messes with your mental psyche (cos my brain was absolute mush after i read this). The low, booming voices, the screams, the laughter which all comes from 'posessed mason' —is all such an uncanny and eerie feeling so make sure not to read at night 😉

There is so much tension that builds up as the story progresses with Dante trying to keep his secret from those he knows while dealing with the horrors unfolding at home. And just when you think you’ve figured it out, Washburn throws in a twist that you won’t see coming. Forget everything you’ve read about possession stories—this one is in a league of its own.

Thank you, David Washburn, for reaching out and sending me a copy of this ARC to review. You must really know what I like cos you literally NAILED this story. I can't wait to own my own copy when it comes out in a few months!

Reading this made me realize I can absolutely 100 percent NOT read anything religion based. At least not without researching a tad more. I was excited to be able to read what I thought was a spooky horror story. I dont get to dive into these horror genres often since most things recommended in my view tend to be fantasy or romance since thats a popular genre. So my excitement for a spooky read was wayyy up there.

I had to read the reviews about 30 percent into reading the story to see if I had missed a warning or a sign somewhere that this is mostly religion based rather than spooky exorcism horror based. I can't find a single thing anywhere to where or how I was led so far off. I know it was mentioned as A religion horror and maybe I misunderstood what that meant but other than that I was baffled. And before yall attack me...yes I know the main character is a pastor. So I was not completely blind to the fact that religion would be present or a little more into the story. The description made me believe that the life of the pastor would be present. It was...just alot more than I expected. However, I dont know if it was me going into this thinking it was going to be a different way or just having too high of an expectation that made me so angry.

Onto the story itself...it was really hard for me to put aside my main frustration(religion and life lesson quotes) in order to constructively critique this one. One thing I can agree with the other reviewers on is that this definitely is a unique twist. Had I gone into this thinking thriller and not your typical haunted exorcism story maybe my review would be slightly different. I think I would have enjoyed it more.

I can say you will not get anything, at least for me, that draws you in spooky wise until Chapter 10. The first 9 chapters would be similar to a movie setting up for the main plot scare. This story kinda read like it was a script to me at times. There were a few instances that some sentences seemed to be like a guide for an actor rather than a way to drag you in. Roughly about page 116 and on is where it started to draw me in alot more as the church, bible verse, and religion aspects became less in the story. Religion was still there but it wasnt so in your face and shove down your throat kind of way as it was prior to page 116. I was able to focus and actually see this was shaping out to be a story of a different sort. I did get enjoyment out of the twist and I think had this been a film it would have been amazing. The characters would definitly be something to be remembered and I did enjoy them.

I do plan to read another story from this author despite not enjoying this story. I hear another of his works has very high praise and definitely different from this one. It saddens me to write a review of this negative volume. I just dont want someone else to walk into this story expecting something far different like I did.

Regardless I thank the author for this early gift to read.

This may be Washburn’s best book yet. I could tell a lot of care and research went into getting the psychological breakdown of the main character just right. I flew through the first half of this book, which incidentally some may feel is a slow burn lead-up to the “main event” but I’ve read slower and I feel it was necessary to truly show the slow descent into the main character, Dante’s, madness.

I found I was wanting to be reading it every chance I got but I also found I didn’t want to read unless I knew I was going to have a big chunk of uninterrupted time because it’s one of those books I couldn’t put down.

I enjoyed the fact that just when I thought I had things figured out, I was left guessing what was real and what wasn’t up to the very end. It was brutal, psychological, and emotional. The ending was bleak but wrapped up nicely in a way that isn’t always done with horror novels. I often find I’m left wanting more from a horror story ending.

It is very heavy on the religious aspect of the story (the main character being a pastor who comes to believe his young son is possessed by a demon and decides to take matters into his own hands and perform his own exorcism). At the beginning, to me, the religious stuff felt more heavy-handed than I thought it needed to be, but the further into the story I got I understood why the author went there and in the end it had the effect I believe he intended it to have. I think especially for people who have been there and through it and understand how all-consuming a religious life can be sometimes. I felt the mental health aspect of it all. Washburn hit the nail on the head with the toll it can take. The pressure to live up to the unrealistic ideals and the pressure to be and do everything all the time for others and you just end up losing yourself.

Washburn has truly written a gripping, heartbreaking, psychological horror novel that will have you questioning one man’s reality and will leave you on the edge of your seat in a race to save a young boy’s life. (Soul or otherwise).

DIY Exorcism

By David Washburn

The home of the Mitchell family suffers from the turmoil of divorce and uncertainty. Dante, who is a small town pastor, feels an obligation for his parishioners first while putting his family second. He loves his wife Grace and their nine year old son Mason of course, but the responsibility to his church is too great, as he feels guilt from the former pastor, his father, who he must live up to. As the troubled family falls apart, Dante tries his best to spend as much time with his son as possible. But Dante notices strange unusual behaviors from Mason that are verbally vicious and cold. Dante brushes off Mason's behavior as a stage from the divorce, but gradually, Mason's behavior changes into the son he doesn't recognize.

I found the religious tone of good and evil appropriate from the characters background and his search for faith. Dante being a pastor helps the story be even more dramatic to his painful struggles. You honestly feel sympathy for this family. Each character has their own individual grief and sadness, which was needed for this story. Not just pop-up and jump scares. The book starts slowly with much domestic drama, but with patience, the story takes off.

David Washburn's writing is fantastic. His characters were convincing enough that you were experiencing the scenes along with them. This book isn't just frightening and dark. There were times I felt anxious and excited to finish it. And that, in my opinion, is what a horror story should be.

My only critique was the title. This story is too good for a title that sounds like you were searching for a "how to fix it" book at the local library. This book grabs your attention with shocking scenes and a huge twist you weren't expecting. I look forward to reading more of Washburns' work.

DIY Exorcism

is a gripping, emotionally charged story that explores the collision of faith, family, and the supernatural. At its heart, this is not just a tale of exorcism—it’s the harrowing journey of a father who is forced to confront his deepest fears and beliefs when the unthinkable happens: his own son becomes the victim of demonic possession.

Daivd masterfully captures the inner turmoil of the preacher, whose role as both a man of God and a father is tested to its breaking point. The tension between his religious duties and his overwhelming love for his child creates an intense, heart-wrenching narrative that pulls readers into the struggle of choosing between faith and familial bonds. The preacher’s fight is not just against the dark entity tormenting his son, but against his own doubts and fears, making this book as much about spiritual warfare as it is about personal redemption.

What sets DIY apart from other exorcism stories is its focus on the human element—the pain, the fear, and the raw vulnerability of a parent desperately trying to save their child. The pacing is tight, with moments of genuine suspense that keep readers on edge, but it’s the emotional weight of the story that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Haunting, powerful read that blends supernatural horror with deeply human themes of love, sacrifice, and faith. It’s not just a battle between good and evil—it’s a father’s fight for his son , and it’s one you won’t soon forget.

I highly recommend this book. It's not often that I read or even finish a book, but this had me from start to finsh!!!!

This book is easy 4 stars.

First I’d like to start by saying I am so happy I was able to read this book and have it in my collection. I love religious horror and possession horror so I knew as soon as I heard about this book being released that I had to have it. This is my first book from this author but I’m sure it won’t be my last. I enjoyed his writing style and short chapters! lol! 😂

I liked all the characters and even the more unlikeable ones stood out. But I think my favourite character is the next door neighbour Barry.

Mmc pastor Dante Mitchell is having an extremely difficult time in life, still reeling from his late father’s passing and the separation from his wife and then finding out she’s seeing somebody else. To now suspecting that something very bizarre but serious is going on with their 10 year old son Mason.

This book starts out fairly light but don’t be fooled because about halfway through things will definitely start to take a very dark turn.
There’s some funny parts that made me laugh and there’s some not so funny parts that made me squirm.

Overall, I highly recommend giving this book a read especially if you’re like me and are a big of religious horror and you would like to support horror authors. I think you’ll like it!

*PARENTS BEWARE: DIY Exorcism knows how to hit you right where it hurts.

Dante seems to have it all— a beautiful wife, a loving son, and he’s just taken over as head pastor over at his father’s old church.

But when the arguments with his wife lead to a heart-wrenching divorce, forcing him to watch his ex fall in love with another man right in front of his eyes, and his growing son starts giving him more attitude than he ever expected, his life takes a big turn.

And when the attitude problems his son exhibits turn into something more sinister, Dante is left to figure it out all by himself, while the church (and his ex) are left in the dark, wondering if Dante will ever make it out alive.

DIYE is a chilling tale of the plights of crumbling mental health, especially for people who are expected to have it all together.

Taking elements of supernatural possession, religious horror, psychological torture, and the horrors of parenthood, DIYE leaves nothing to be desired as it hits you in all the feels, all at once.

A 4.5 star that I’ve rounded up to a 5, I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a spooky tale about what it’s like to be a single parent in this terrifying world.

But parents, hug your kids a little extra after reading this.

In DIY Exorcism we get to know the Mitchells. A family of three: father Dante, mother Grace and their ten year old son Mason. Dante is an engaging dad and a pastor at the church. His world collapses after his wife tells him she wants a divorce, but he grabs himself together and does his stinking best to at least be be a good parent. One day strange things are starting to happen in the house and Mason’s behavior gets out of control, right out of the blue. And then it’s hits him, could Mason be possessed by an evil force?

At the start of the book the author carefully takes the time getting you to know the family members and their backgrounds. They all sound like a normal family with their normal issues and I got really involved with the characters. But when things are starting to go bad the story grows to a pageturning rollercoaster which I couldn’t put down. One bomb after the other got dropped and when I had only 40 more pages to go I thought, how in the world can this end in a good way?? 🤯
