Discover the remarkable history of the Jurassic Era... Free BONUS Inside!
Thanks to a certain novel and movie franchise, the Jurassic Period has been indelibly cemented in the public imagination as the time of dinosaurs. That was certainly the Jurassic Period saw reptiles such as the long-necked Brachiosaurus, the armored Stegosaurus, and the fearsome Allosaurus become the dominant living creatures on planet Earth, a position they maintained for more than 150 million years. However, many of the movie dinosaurs that decorated millions of lunchboxes and backpacks were not from the Jurassic Period at all, but from the following Cretaceous Period.
Of course, this age wasn’t just about dinosaurs. The Jurassic Period saw the Earth going through dramatic geological changes that saw continents drift and collide. New plants and trees developed, some of which are still with us today. Even insects grew to enormous size. This period also saw the emergence of something entirely birds. In fact, there was only one type of creature that did not thrive and evolve in this our own distant relatives, mammals.
This book delves into the true story of the Jurassic Period, of how the planet changed, and how a staggering array of new life came to occupy the land, seas, and skies.

First, there should have been illustrations of the significant dinosaurs (instead of requiring readers to find them online). This book explains how fossils are formed so that not all dead animals form into fossils.
The Jurassic period was warmer than today, and the land masses separated and became their ecosystems. There were so many ferns that they were called "fern prairies." Two familiar plantings were there during this age: the ginkgo biloba and the horsetail. However, the horsetail today is as thin as a pencil (or so). In Jurassic times, it was a tree's diameter.
While our knowledge of the dinosaurs of the Jurassic period is far from complete, this book makes a commendable effort to shed light on the most significant ones. It also delves into the emergence of crocodiles during the Jurassic Age, emphasizing that there is still much more to uncover about this fascinating era.
My fascination with this whole era goes back to Jurassic Park, so I was always going to enjoy reading about it, and for the most part, I did. There's a lot of good information packed into this short book. My one real frustration was the complete absence of any pictures; I struggled to picture many of the creatures being described and ended up googling them just to follow along. A handful of visuals would have made all the difference. Still, a genuinely enjoyable read on a topic I've loved for years.
This book discusses and explains the climate, landscapes, plant species and animal species in less than 150 pages. The author examines theories of the cause of the massive extinctions in the Triassic and Jurassic periods. After reading this book, the reader realizes how little we still know about these prehistoric times.
This book discusses the significance of the historical eras of earth's past. In particular, it focuses on the Era that was dinosaurs become dominant. The authors explain how the breakup of Pangaea helped make the continents more lush and how that fueled and abetted the growth of various animal species, including dinosaurs.
I have read a number of Hourly Histories. They are of varying quality but this one was by far the best. The book is informative and takes a philosophical viewpoint on the many unknowns of such an ancient era for which evidence must be viewed critically. It comes across as thoughtful and scholarly. Interesting subject.
This is a good overview of the second dinosaur epoch, suitable for all ages. Not childish, and not so advanced as to be above anyone's understanding of the subject.
Very informative for any dinosaur enthusiasts. Definitely shows most peoples casual knowledge of dinosaurs is wrong. This book would have greatly benefited from illustrations.
There is a lot of good information in this short book but it badly needs some sketches and illustrations. I had difficulty picturing the creatures described.
I really enjoyed this short history. I like listening to these so much! If there's a topic I wast to dig a little deeper into, I've got a good foundation to spring from.
