A Brother's Best Friends Mafia Romance

In my silent world, they were everything.
After my brother died, Elio, Dante, Nicolo, and Ranieri were my protectors, the only ones looking out for me in the cruel landscape of the Amante family.
They were my everything, but I wanted more.
But they were supposed to be off-limited—unattainable because they were once my brother’s beloved pack members.
I was just a beta, and a deaf one at that. There was truly no place for me by their sides.

Then I’m kidnapped and experimented on by a mad scientist and it all changes. I’m no longer who I was, my body changed at a biological level.
I don’t know what I am anymore.
I’m broken, shattered into a million pieces and haphazardly glued together by their desire to keep me safe. It should make me feel good, but all it does it make me feel even more fragile, like the next time they break me it will be for good this time.

I went in with high hopes because the last book was great, but this one let me down. The story skipped all the good parts just to focus on mid smut, the FMC wasn’t very likeable, and the deaf representation felt off, like the author hasn’t actually spent time around a deaf person. I don’t think I’ll read the next installment when it comes out

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn’t. I think what I disliked the most about this book was its use of a deaf FMC. When she bonds, she can “hear” the MMCs in her head and they can communicate that way. There really was no other purpose of her being deaf beyond that aspect being useful to the plot.

I felt like this book was super slow on the chemistry of these characters. There was a lot of telling us that the MMCs cared for her, but not showing us until halfway through the book, which is not enough time to really get to know an entire pack.

I loved this first book and ate this one up so quick too!
Elio, Nico, Dante and Ranieri was amazing for Cini!
Cini hasn't had an easy life but her brother made it bearable but when he was no longer around this went from bad to worse. Cini was a first in a lot of ways but the guys done their best to make her life easier.
I loved the dynamics around this one and how different it was!
I hope we see more from this world!

Great OV RH! I mean, it was written by Calliope Stewart, so I knew I was gonna love it, but I do really love it! ❤️

I like the "kind-of-forbidden" aspect due to Cini's late brother being part of the pack, and I enjoyed how their relationships evolved, different with each MMC! I also like that Cini is quite sheltered, and she's deaf in an environment where very few people bothered to learn ASL to communicate with her, but she's super strong and resilient. She's was an intriguing and endearing FMC.

Honestly, I can't tell which MMC is my favorite. I thought it was gonna be Elio, then Nico, but then each of them grabbed my heart, and I love them all equally, which rarely happens to me in a RH.

Overall, I recommend it to all omegaverse readers. I know you will love it too! 😍

PS: still, you should check the trigger warnings and be safe! Mental health first! 🫂

DNF @ 61%. I love omegaverse and reverse harem when it’s done right. This? Not it.

The intimacy is not spicy, it’s stomach-turning. The heroine’s first time is a coerced wedding night her father forces for “proof.” Her second time ever is a jealous ambush quickie with no foreplay that the book literally acknowledges and shrugs off. Instead of chemistry, every scene reads like obligation, surveillance, or punishment.

She’s deaf, sheltered, and completely vulnerable, yet her supposed “mates” speak over her, make decisions for her, and weaponize jealousy as if it’s romance. Add in cousins in the harem, public medical violations, and tone that lurches from clinical biology lessons to forced intimacy, and you’ve got a mess.

I don’t mind dark, edgy tropes. I enjoy them when they’re written with care. But this wasn’t dark romance, it was just icky.

A decent addition to the series.

Locked away as a disgrace to the family, since as a mafia princess she never left her beta designation and revealed as an omega or alpha. The fortress she was locked away in seemed impenetrable, yet somehow she was stolen and experimented on. When she was finally saved by the pack her late brother formed who always made sure she was treated right, she wasn’t the same.

Although the MMCs did everything they could to make sure the FMC was treated right, they were still stuck working for her father and plied to his will. There was talk of doing everything to get the FMC out of her situation and yet they never acted on any opportunities. Their explanation was that they needed to get rid of her father so they wouldn’t be hunted. The whole book there were constant excuses as to why they couldn’t yet act against the mafia boss.

The FMC also never did anything to better her situation which didn’t endear her to me. Her attitude was that of a petulant child, she’d ignore the MMCs if they had done something that didn’t work for her, and would close her eyes to avoid things she didn’t like. She was perpetually reliant on outside forces and especially the MMCs even when she was under the impression they had no interest in being around her.

The story could’ve been made more interesting with the changes happening to her after being experimented on, but it ended up being a very tame resolution. There was one interesting aspect that came about and made things easier for the FMC communicating with her pack. Unfortunately with her relying on her MMCs so much you didn’t see her much of struggles communicating with the outside world due to her hearing impairment, it’s essentially treated as a nonissue.

Overall I like this universe and the way the story wove in with the previous book and all its characters. I’m curious about the story of the last girl that was being experimented on and what became of her, so I’ll most likely be picking up the last book of the series when it comes out.

We met Cini and her pack during the disastrous wedding at the beginning of "Glass Omega" and now they have their own book. While it's probably easier to read this book if you've read the first in the series, there is some overlap with the end of "Glass Omega" from this pack's point-of-view, which will give you the necessary foundation for what is going on.

This pack does not easily come together. There's definitely romantic interest in Cini from some of the guys, but it's messy because the pack included Cini's brother, who died years before the main events of this book occur. Additionally, there are some mafia family maneuvers that keep them apart for a long time. There's lots of drama here with the pack trying to get out under the family's thumb and survive.

While the writing in this book is solid, a lot of the character relationship building doesn't happen because the characters have already been pining after each other for ages. The pack just comes together but there is little inter-personal growth as they learn more about each other. Most of the inter-pack conflict is the men getting over their guilt of adding their ex-pack-mate's sister to the pack. I wish there was more development of the relationship between Cini and the others.

The other reason this book is a 3-star review instead of being higher is because of how the book treats the character Cini's deafness. I really, really appreciate that the author gave the character ASL (and it is ASL because the author accurately describes ASL signs), but Cini spends a lot of time lipreading, which is not a very efficient form of communication. On top of that, the pack is able to communicate through their bonds, which is kind of a miraculous deafness work-around. So Cini is deaf with some of the challenges of being deaf but also not all of them. Definite points for ASL use by all of the pack though!

Overall, this isn't a bad book, I just wanted more.

We have an fmc who has been locked away and isolated because her father was ashamed, not that she was deaf, but that she did not designate an alpha or omega (preferably the latter) and the extents he goes to force it were...deplorable.

Because she's been 'locked away', she's very naive. She's good at all the school subjects as her father paid for the best tutors for home schooling, but otherwise, nada. His disintrest didn't start with her around designating age though, it had always been that way. Her older brother was the one who truly cared and protected her. Until he died.

I enjoyed the guys, they were realistic in that, they had to rely on help and were trapped in an impossible situation without a magical fix or an impossible level of knowledge. The romance though felt more obligated, rather than felt. We didn't get to 'see' their relationship build, we're told. We mostly see the physical side of things and most of that is coerced by her father. Her father forces the guys to impregnate her, threatening to get someone else to do it if they refuse. She accepts it and tells the guys it's fine and she doesn't fall pregnant because of all the changes her body is still adapting to but still.

The fmc, Cini, I wish had a character arc. She goes through this experimentation, is the first in history to change their designation. She has all three designation traits, yet the only alpha one we see is her ability to bond. I kind of wish it had come through equally. Cini is completely dependent on others from start to finish. I wish she had grown into a little independence, maybe her alpha side showed and she stood up to her father. Something - anything.

I've read other books by this author and loved them. I just found this one, had a lot of writing issues where there wasn't in previous books. There is a lot of silly mistakes. Missing words, wrong words (their instead of there or even they, as instead of at), lots of missing commas and such. Stuff that made me have to pause and reread a sentence, pulling me out of the story.

So, I'm not really sure about this book. I did like the first book and I love it, that Calliope Stewart is one of the few OV authors who is really versatile regarding OV and mixing it up then and there.

I already wrote about that in my review to the first book of The Mafia Darlings. But the thing is, while I like it that she is trying to mix OV up, it just doesn't hit the spot for me.

There are many great aspects and good conflict. I felt for Lucinia and what she had to go through. And I liked the pack. Their love story didn't come to be under the best circumstances. And it was again more a “sweet mafia story”. A lot was passive for me, and there was not really relationship building, as they were pining for each for years.

And it was a bit convenient how her deafness was “solved”. I'm deaf on one ear, so I have some kind of I idea how hard it is. I liked it, that she wasn't a perfect beta/omega and that there were challenges regarding her being deaf. And that the pack learned ASL for her. But it was kind of a moot point, as it was not really used, and she was able to lipread (which is not that perfect for communication, but it worked).

But I don't know. It's a toss up for me, and most of the time there is no pack interaction because they are apart a lot for most of the plot. I had parts I was bored and had to take a break.

I tried to love it, but in the end this wasn't it for me. Good ideas are there. So, 3 stars.

I was excited to get this book. This story follows Cini who was introduced in book 1. I absolutely love Calliope’s writing and this book was another hit for me. I couldn’t put it down. I was ready to dive in as soon as I got it.

I really wanted to wrap Cini up in a bubble and give her a big hug. She had struggles she went through and the pack that ended up with her realized their feelings for after some things happened and that frustrated me. I loved how they finally came together and each had something they brought to the table. Each of them are diffetent

It made me sad when they kept their distance but at the same time when they realized their mistake I love how they made it up to Cini. Some had a hard time admitting their feelings while others were a bit faster at realizing it.

It was nice to see characters from the previous books. Cause often I had wondered if we were going to see them and we did! I was excited for that lol. The spice was nice but not overpowering of the story. Which I liked.

Overall, I really liked this book. It was a cute and heartfelt story. It had me swooning and crying at other moments. I recommend if you love omegaverse.

I wasn't expecting this book yet, but I'm so happy it's here! This is book 2 of the series and follows Cini, the beta briefly introduced in book 1.

Luscinia Amante, aka Cini, has held a torch for her brother's pack her whole life. She's her father's biggest disappointment born deaf and never awakening as an omega. It's been years since her brother passed away, and his pack has kept her at a distance. After she's kidnapped and experimented on, they can no longer deny their feelings. How can they get her free from her father's clutches?

I loved the pack 😍. They each felt something for Cini but always kept their distance out of respect for her brother. I have a thing for the dangerous, strong, silent types, so Dante turned out to be my favorite. Nico was surprisingly a close runner-up. Elio and Ranieri both wanted to get Cini away and struggled with admitting their feelings for different reasons.

We get several appearances from characters in the previous book. I really want to know what happened to the other woman held alongside Cini and Perrie. Who is she? Where is she? Does Dr. Stedmeyer get a pack?

If you had asked me a couple of years ago if I was going to be obsessed with mafia het-omegaverse reverse harem, I would have thought I was having a stroke because what do all those words mean together? I was pleasantly surprised on my level of enjoyment with Broken Beta. It's certainly a . . . unique take to designation switching.

I really liked the FMC, Lucinia/Cini. She was sweet and just a nice, even-keeled FMC to read. She didn't really come across as anything special in terms of mafia or omegaverse. Overall, her personality was fairly steady. She wasn't whiney, spineless, or a badass. She just was, and frankly the fact that she didn't come across as a caricature was just pleasant. The MMCs were all kind of one note, and that's a bit of a change of pace for most of the reverse harems I read. None of the personalities really were too different. Elio is the leader, Nico is the insta-love softy, Rani is the reluctant lover, and Dante is the stoic quiet guy. But they were caricatures again, they were just slightly different.

Overall, it was good. Nothing revolutionary but not offensive by any means.

In this novel our FMC, Luscinia, is a deaf beta, and therefore, her father’s biggest disappointment. After her brother is killed on a mission, and his pack goes to jail for a year, excluding one, Cini is left all alone and withdraws completely, especially given they are the only people who learned ASL for her. In the present, Cini is kidnapped and genetically modified in a lab. She comes out of this no longer a beta, but with both omega traits and alpha traits, which, in this reader’s opinion, is 🎵The best both worlds 🎵. I want to note this is a somewhat sad story given the FMC marries late brothers pack, and while she’s been in love with them for her entire childhood, the way this came to be was not the best of circumstances. The MMC’s Elio, Ranieri, Nicolo, and Dante really do care for Cini, but there is a forbidden aspect, given her brother was in their pack, that some of them struggle to overcome. I really enjoyed this book, I liked the throwbacks to characters from the previous storyline in this series. I really recommend, however, please check your trigger warnings.

Broken Beta is the second book of The Mafia Darlings Omegaverse series, and while it’s part of a series, it reads perfectly well as a standalone.

Cini’s journey is powerful and emotional. Born deaf and treated as worthless by her own father, her early life was far from easy. Her only source of love and support was her brother until his tragic death. Before he passed, he made his pack promise to protect her, and that promise becomes the emotional core of the story.

Cini is an incredibly strong and resilient character. Despite being raised as an outcast and facing unimaginable cruelty, she never lets it define her. Her strength and quiet determination shine through every page.

The male main characters clearly care deeply for her, but their internal struggle, wanting to honor their late friend while grappling with their growing feelings for his sister, adds an emotional tension that makes their dynamic even more compelling.

What really stood out to me is how Broken Beta sets itself apart from typical Omegaverse stories. I won’t spoil anything, but if you’re looking for something that blends mafia themes, Omegaverse dynamics, and a why choose romance with emotional depth, this one is a must read!

I will go on the record saying this was my first Omegaverse official book I’ve ever read. I’ve read omegaverse fanfiction in the past, but never an actual book. I loved every moment from the first page . It drew me in like a moth to a flame, the character build, slow burn was great. It felt like six years had actually passed before the relationships began. Now, the world was a bit confusing at first, because I was expecting wolf packs, with you know actual shifting into said wolves. Once I realized they didn’t shift into anything it became less confusing.

The dynamics between the heroes and heroine was beautifully written, I loved the teasing, each man had their own marks placed differently, each had their own type of dynamic revolving around the heroine. One was mush around her, others a little bit more dominant than others. But in the end they each come together and become a true pack.

Overall, I will be reading more Omegaverse books in the future. Hopefully pick up more by this author as well.

I adored the first book but this book just blew me away!

There was a lot of depth to this book: the four families, the deceased sibling, the romance that against all odds blooms like a flower through a crack in concrete, and what happens to our FMC pretty early on.

The way Calliope really handles all of these topics feels speedy (but not rushed, just handled quickly) and a few times jumps to keep things tidy. We do lose out on a bit of combat but don't lose out on any personal growth/exploration of romance/important plot points.

Elio, Dante, Nicolo, and Ranieri are really interesting and different romantic partners (Dante being my favorite) who all bring something unique to the table to love on the FMC.

Cini is an incredible FMC, I loved the way they handled her deafness in the story and how people treated her, in addition to her designation! There isn't a moment where this character isn't asserting who she is in the best of ways.

This is a unique OV story that I'd highly recommend.

Probably would've liked this better had the FL NOT gotten together with her deceased older brother's lover (Ranieri), who is still actively grieving his death and missing him.

Cini loved the guys since she was young (which Alesso himself knew), and Ranieri had an open relationship with Alesso (Cini's older brother). So, there's nothing inherently wrong with Cini getting with Ranieri.

But this get together confuses me emotionally, because if I were in Cini's shoes, I would think I'm betraying my older brother and I'd be worried about being a replacement for him.

Perhaps I'm projecting too much of myself on to Cini, idk. I'm just not fond of someone getting romantically involved with their deceased sister or brother's partner. I've never been a fan of this concept, and I don't think I ever will be a fan.

Bent, but Never Broken!

I never thought I’d enjoy mafia based stories so much, but Calliope just pulls you in. I devoured the 1st story, and after getting teased with Cini & her guys, I just knew this book was going to be just as good. I was SOOOO right 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Cini was so much stronger than anyone gave her credit for, and oh my bleepity bleep bleep bleep, Elio, Dante, Nicolo, and Ranieri were absolutely everything she needed on so many levels, even if it took her being kidnapped before they started coming to terms with that. I completely understand the reasoning behind the hesitation for everyone considering the guys were in a pack with her late brother, but that’s what made seeing them give in that much more emotional & dramatic. Watching them all come together, in their own ways & at their own speeds, was just so frappin good. I’m surprised I remembered to breathe during some parts lol. This was omegaverse perfection, and I really hope Calliope keeps this universe going…especially since we did have someone else in that lab with Cini & Perrie 👀😉 If you love omegaverse stories that flip every emotional switch you could possibly have, then this is one you wanna grab! I would highly recommend reading the 1st book beforehand though. Beyond the fact that it was amazing, it also gives some background on Cini that is pretty important IMO. Either way…you need to read this ❤️

🌶️🌶️ 2/5 Spice

This is my first book by author Calliope Stewart and as a huge OV lover the blurb captured my attention right away, so I knew I had to give it a read.

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. I didn't think the story was executed well and it almost felt choppy at times. I also had a really hard time connecting with the FMC Luscinia and I'm not entirely sure why. The premise of the book was really great I just don't think the story was fully fleshed out to its full potential. And for an OV I was honestly expecting way more spice and I also felt like there was imbalance with it amongst the MMC's and FMC. I don't typically like MM in my OV romances (as I know this author writes a lot of that), but I definitely want to try and read another book by this author to see if maybe it was just this particular book, I had a hard time connecting with.

Calliope! This book was amazing. I was nervous to pick this one up because I love her books but didn't love the first one in the series as much as I wanted to, plus what book came out last summer! Anyways, I finally picked this one up, and I loved Cini so much, and it was interesting to see how the whole hybrid thing worked here. I was obsessed with her and how they handled the whole communication, because the FMC is deaf; however, she pretty much grew up with most of these guys, so they know ASL, and it was just a lot of fun seeing this story play out. It is a darker book because it's mafia, and Cini's father is terrible. This book does walk back a little bit, so we learn what happened to Cini's big brother, along with seeing her POV when the guys were dealing with the events of book 1, and now I'm super curious about the final book coming out next year!

{3.5 Stars}. I agree with another reviewer that it seemed we got more “telling than showing” about how much the guys cared for Cini. I wish we got more flashbacks or something to show their history together. It seemed even the guys with ‘hurdles’ immediately got rid of them with no problem when it was time for them to. Like Dante waited so long and then all the sudden was ready to bond her with no explanation? Just needed some more relationship building in my opinion.

I also agree with the commenter that the fact Cini can “hear” her alphas once bonded came off a little ableist. At one point she even says she wishes she could hear them like a “normal person”. That sort of rubbed me the wrong way.

DNF’ed at 60%

I really enjoyed Perrie’s story, and I was really looking forward to seeing how the dynamic and relationship would flesh out with Cini being deaf.

There were a shocking amount of typos and grammatical errors in the prologue alone. That was an immediate red flag, and frankly I DNF books much sooner for that alone. In a sea of omegaverse books, having a deaf FMC is uncommon, and was an appealing component to see introduced here. That being said, it was incredibly disappointing that the mind-reading component was introduced so quickly - it felt like it nullified the opportunity to have a really beautiful, nuanced inter-ability pack dynamic.

I tried really hard to finish this, but between the above points and the overall pacing, it felt like a chore to try and finish.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Thank you to the author for the eARC.

I read Broken Beta within a single day—I couldn’t put it down.

Luscinia is the Deaf Beta daughter of the Italian Mafia Don…the evil and demanding mafia don. Long story short, she goes through hell in order to get her pack.

I loved watching her pack evolve. How each of her men quietly adores her and becomes more and more open about their love. So much communication, I can’t resist when everyone is open and willing to talk about the hard things. Everyone had such different personalities, they all felt like they truly were parts of a whole and that together, they made a full family.

A great addition to the series!

We got a glimpse of the Pack and Cini in Glass Omega and I was interested their story.

Broken Beta is Cini, a deaf isolated beta, whose father is abhorrent/abusive and pack who were made up of Elio, Nico, Dante and Ranieri who are coming off the loss of their friend/Cini's brother. Despite their desire, the pack holds themselves back until Cini is taken, experimented on and then an arranged marriage is proposed. Cini went through hell and her pack while hesitant aren't holding back anymore.
The way the pack came together, with their whole mission in keeping Cini protected and safe was sweet. Cini is dealing with the change, not only within her own body but the freedom she finds in her pack.

This also has a unique take on how a pack interacts, first with ASL and then their own pack link post experimentation.

Enjoyed and am really interested in the mysterious Alpha in the next

Another fabulous book by Calliope Stewart. This is book 2 and we briefly met the characters in book 1 as an introduction to them. This book centres around Cini, a deaf beta, who has always been mistreated by her father, one of the heads of a mafia family. Cini has always been in love with her brothers pack since she was young. After her brother dies, Nico, Dante, Elio and Ranieri vow to look after her but can’t get close to her because of her father. After Cini is kidnapped, she is experimented on medically and her designation changes. The pack rescue Cini and do what needs to be done so she’s safe and they can be together.

This was such an emotional and stressful story, not just for Cini but also Elio, Dante, Rani, and Nico. Cini's has been treated as less than her whole life by her father. Her brother, Alesso, and his pack were the only one's to care about and treat her well. When Alesso is killed, her life changes and not for the better. It took a while for the guys to come around from feeling like they were betraying Alesso by wanting and loving Cini. It's a bit of a slow burn, but when the spice shows up, it's great! Loved it!!!

4,25 stars - so sweet, fun and dark

I had a really good time reading this book, and it had several of my favourite kinds of tropes and vibes.
I do wish the trauma of certain experiences hadn't been moved on from so fast, and I would've loved to see the pack bonding and healing more together. Honestly, the book could and should have had another 100 extra pages - it would've made it a five star read for me if it lingered more on those heavier things (and if I had gotten even more time with these characters who I immediately liked SO much!).

I was lucky to get my hands on an early copy this week and absolutely devoured the book. I really enjoyed Cini's character and the way she handled all of the guys in the pack. My favourite part of the book is what happened to their communication after bonding... I won't say anything else for spoilers sake. I also really loved the cameos from Edison. Definitely go grab book one, Glass Omega and then take a read! They are technically standalones but I love both of them!
