Welcome to beautiful, tiny Whispering Key, Florida, where you’ll find plenty of sunshine, loads of quirky residents, a whole lot of snarky banter, a boatload of true love… and possibly even a missing treasure.
In this collection
Off Plan - Falling for a man wasn’t in Mason Bloom’s five-step life plan. He was supposed to be a concierge doctor at a swanky resort. Instead he becomes the reluctant resident of a ridiculous small town awash in legends of shipwrecks… and gorgeous, provoking Fenn Reardon might just be the treasure he didn't know he was looking for.
On the Run - When snarky self-help guru Toby arrives on the Key looking for a place to hide out, he isn’t expecting to find Beale Goodman, the world’s largest, hottest, most virginal cinnamon roll, waiting in his bed, or for the two to become fake (or-not-so-fake) soulmates… and he definitely didn’t expect Whispering Key to become a place he wants to run to instead of from.
Off Key - Jay Rollins is a rock star with a once upon a time he was in love with his childhood best friend… a man who ended up marrying (and divorcing) his sister. But when he and Rafe Goodman are thrown together again on a zany cross-country road trip, they find that some love songs deserve a second verse.
'Whispering Key: The Complete-Series' written by May Archer, (Audible) narrated by Michael Dean
This set includes all three books: 1. Off Plan 2. On the Run (my fave book in this series) 3. Off Key
I used to have the paperbacks for all the books, but ended up donating them a while ago (after re-reading them several times). Missed them, so took advantage of Audible sales and got the whole set.
I'm starting my reading binge with the middle book, 'On The Run', as it's my fave book in this series, featuring one of the Goodman brothers, Beal, who is a favorite character of mine as is his potential "soul mate", Toby, who is absolutely hilarious!
Michael Dean, the narrator, is fun & funny, especially voicing Toby, the OTT character fleeing from a wild night and a potential "outing" of another character (which Toby does NOT want to do), of a famous singer. It was all a set-up for money by a third guy (unbeknowst to Toby), inside a New York City gay bar where Toby was having fun dancing. So Toby flees to Florida where his friend, Mason, now lives (the first book in this series), en-route losing his phone, his credit card, and almost his mind, in this hilarious sequence!
Loved Beal's cat, Marjorie, who meows like a revved-up truck engine with smoker's cough and puts up with no crap from anyone.
The third book, 'Off Key' features that outed singer from the previous book, Jay, who just so happens to be Beal's oldest brother, Rafe, ex-wife's brother, whom he has been pining for, for years.
This series ties in with 'The Sunday Brothers' series, which takes place after this series; the first book 'Pick Me' features Gage, the Goodman Brother's youngest sibling, and also a very funny book.
Both series are very entertaining, having actual interesting plots and a myriad of intriguing characters peppering these storylines.
Book 1 was good, but I found myself bored in the beginning and so I skipped from chapter 2 to chapter 11 then read the rest of the book and enjoyed it. I liked the dynamics between the MCs and their budding romance made it an enjoyable read.
Book 2 was by far the best of the bunch. From beginning to end, it was a sweet, enjoyable and tear-filled story. Toby/Trey was hilarious! I could not get enough of this couple and even when apart, I didn't think either was overreacting as we understood the reasons why they were apart. Loved the cat!
Book 3.....this is why the rating is what it is. I absolutely hated this book. I didn't feel any of the attraction until the very end of the book, but by that time it was too little too late to redeem. I felt like the author was trying to wrap this up in a tidy bow and it made the story crap...IMO.
The sister, I would have cut her from my life..sickness and all. She to me was so selfish, manipulative and deceptive and regardless of blood, I would not be able to trust her one iota. Her explanation as to why she ran away and stopped all communication is so rubbish. Supposed she had died or been taken advantage of somehow, who would have known? and to only communicate with your ex's father?, such a selfish thing to do, especially when there was so much risk of dying, AND she still didn't try to come clean even after the surgery. Her character did not elicit any sort of empathy or sympathy from me. I wrote her off immediately. The author tried and failed IMO to have her situation be an AWW moment but instead, I rolled my eyes, sucked my teeth and shook my head. Don't even get me started on the doctor...excuse me, the doctor's brother who now becomes her husband....really? REALLY?
Apparently, a lack of communication, selfishness and a need to get your own way runs in that family because I found her brother, one of the MCs, just as unlikeable. I found the relationship between the two MCs almost forced and seeing as they were supposed best friends until two or so years before, they sure DIDN'T know each other very well or cherish the relationship to have the friendship end without either of them talking about the issue. Not only that, but 2 years is not a long time for one to forget that your best friend is afraid of flying. Douche.
Great series full of engaging stories and lovable MCs. You'll get all the best features of May Archer's writing and, fair warning, will very likely get sucked in from the get go. I loved every single story in this series!
