What a fantastic debut!!!

This had me beyond emotional. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is never easy. The way Gwen’s grief was handled felt so real. It was raw and heart breaking, and it made me feel like I had lost someone.

Gwen was such a wonderful and strong character. Her compassion and her fire quickly made her a favorite. Coming into a position of power often held by men is no easy feat. The political games, the misogyny, and the added weight of responsibility—on top of the grief from loss—makes it extremely hard. And I feel that this was captured very well.

Tyreal just stole my heart from the very beginning. His love for Gwen and his obsession with protecting her made him endearing. The tension between the two of them was piping and exactly what I wanted to see between two friends pining for each other. And Tyreal’s name for Gwen had me clapping my feet together.

I adored the side characters just as much. Gwen’s brother was absolutely adorable. And I thoroughly enjoyed the world building as well, and am excited to see even more. Along with a deeper dive into the magic system.

Can’t wait for what’s to come!

I received an advanced copy and this is my voluntary review

Gwen has to navigate her new role as Queen, the loss of her father, and the pressures and responsibilities of ruling her Kingdom. Her emotional journey is raw, but she is determined and fierce, and has her loyal guard Tyreal by her side.
As a royal and guard their love is forbidden, but the tension between them is intense. I enjoyed their chemistry, the mutual pining, the flirting and banter, and the bond they share.
I loved all the political scheming, the drama and action, and all the steamy one bed scenes.
There are lots of sub plots building the tension and intrigue, fantastic and diverse side characters with fun personalities, and a hidden world of magic, prophecies and curses.
Excited to see more of this series as the stakes increase.

🗡️"Even if the world fell away, I would find my way to you"

Dani Loughary, you have my attention. I didn’t realize Embers of Fate was your debut, and I mean that in the best way possible. This book delivers a beautifully crafted fantasy with familiar elements while still feeling fresh and unique especially in its take on the genre and magic system. With strong character development, well-paced storytelling, and a world that feels lived in, this was an absolute standout read.

Gwen, our FMC, is everything you want in a protagonist... strong yet vulnerable, determined yet uncertain. As a princess about to take the throne, she’s grappling with the weight of responsibility, and that internal struggle makes her incredibly easy to root for.

Then there’s Tyreal, her loyal guard and our MMC. He’s devoted, protective, and utterly in love with Gwen, but bound by his duty and honor. That push-and-pull dynamic adds so much depth to their relationship, and I found myself completely invested in their journey.

The secondary characters also shine. Each one feels fleshed out with their own motivations and struggles, adding layers to the story rather than just existing to support the main leads. While they already have depth, I’m hoping book two dives even further into their arcs because there’s so much potential there.

Loughary does an excellent job of crafting a world that feels real. The different kingdoms, histories, and beliefs are seamlessly woven into the story, making the setting feel immersive without info-dumping. The societal struggles, particularly the tension surrounding a female ruler, add a thought-provoking layer that grounds the fantasy elements in something very tangible.

The magic system is present but not overly detailed, which I think worked in the book’s favor. Instead of getting bogged down by technical explanations, the focus remains on the characters and their struggles. That said, I’d love to see more of the magic explored in future installments, especially as Gwen grows into her role.

This book never really hits a lull. The pacing is well-balanced, keeping tension high while allowing room for character moments to breathe. Gwen’s ascension to the throne doesn’t come without conflict—there are those who believe a woman shouldn’t rule, and that power struggle adds a compelling layer to the story. The themes of tradition vs. progress are handled well, giving the book an added depth beyond just politics and battles.

And that ending? Absolutely sets the stage for book two in the best and most painful way.

For a debut, Embers of Fate is incredibly polished. Dani Loughary proves she’s an author to watch, and I cannot wait to see what she brings in the sequel. If you love well-developed characters, a richly built world, and just the right amount of slow-burning tension, this is one you don’t want to miss.

4.5 stars! I love a good “your queen is way more of a badass than you ever thought possible” story and this one DELIVERED! I fell in love with Gwen and her relationship with her brother so quickly - I love the idea of the reluctant heir accepting her position steadfastly to make sure she’s able to wholeheartedly help her sibling and her people.

I really enjoyed the mutual pining and intermittent angst throughout the book when it came to Gwen and Tyreal. I loved their childhood friends-to-lovers arc while they navigated the royal mess and upheaval that started as Gwen ascended to the throne and Tyreal as her High Captain.

Without spoiling the entire plot of the book, I will just say that this book took a few turns I simply didn’t expect and I haven’t been heartbroken by a “to be continued” cliffhanger like that in a while. Watching Gwen, Tyreal, and their friends/allies navigate the world and figure out their next steps to ensure the safety of the kingdom (and maybe permission for Gwen to marry a commoner…)

Dani did a fantastic job of building the characters, world, and general intrigue throughout this story. I am sold and ready to dive into book 2 whenever it’s ready to hit the masses.

The richly developed characters, especially Gwen and Tyreal, are relatable and engaging, making it easy to root for them. The world-building is immersive and vivid, drawing you into the kingdom of Tavia effortlessly. The plot is intricate, with twists and turns that keep you hooked from start to finish. Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released on February 14th called, Embers of Fate. This is about Gwen, who is thrust into the role as queen of her kingdom when her father dies. There are people who don't think she should be queen, someone is stealing from the castle, there is scheming against her and her younger brother, as well as other kingdoms trying to pressure her into marriage. The person Gwen trusts most is her high captain, and he has been secretly in love with her since they were kids. She secretly feels the same towards him, but she is a royal and he is a commoner, they have been set on different life courses although they are never far from each other's side. When the threats and a potential war loom closer and closer, they must journey with some trusted friends to find the answers on how to try to stop it. This book had loss, grief, betrayal, romance, magic, and twists I didn't see coming. The characters had depth, the emotions were felt, the story was intriguing, I really enjoyed this one! And I am eager for the story to continue with book 2 this fall! 💛📚

Thank you to the author and to the publisher for this ARC of Embers of Fate, in exchange for an honest review.

I love this book so much. I’m an absolute sucker for a good fantasy. Give me allllll the magical, but relatable characters and I’m a happy duck.

Dani did such an amazing job writing a story and world that is unique, but won’t break the brain trying to keep up as things unfold.

I loved Gwyn and Tyreal (even when I wanted to smack them for being idiots a couple times). The side characters were also super lovable and the handful of people you’re not meant to like are really well written to be unlikable.

I absolutely can’t wait to see what comes next from both the Hearts of Valine series and any other works she makes!

Absolutely 💯 percent loved this book, I had absolutely no idea how it was gonna turn out, but I didn't see it coming at all. I'm so sad that I have to wait to finish the story as it will be continued in the next book, but it is so worth the wait. This book has all the emotions! Desire, anger, love, you name it, it has it. The growth of Gwen through this book not only with Tyreal but just self growth is amazing. Seeing her becoming the queen that everyone knew she could be was amazing. I cannot wait to read the next book, and I will patiently be waiting!

Received and E-Arc for an honest review. I surprisingly really enjoyed this book. It was a slow start for me, but as the story progressed, the more I got sucked in. I loved seeing Gwen, the FMC, grow as a person and as a queen. And the forbidden relationship with her high guard was stinking cute that had me smiling every time. I do love how this story was more than just a forbidden romance, but also the political nature of it all. I will say that I do wish this was written in 1st POV as I love being in the mind of the character and I feel like I would have enjoyed it more, but that is just a personal preference and in no way took away from the beauty of the story. I can't wait for the next book to see how this story pans out.

This was a really great debut book in the Romantasy genre.
It’s got a greatly built world. The details the author included made me really feel like I was there.
It’s got a forbidden romance (Princess x guard)
It’s got two of my all time favorite things: touch her and die trope and pet names. Tyreal can call me “sweet girl” anytime!
It’s emotional. As someone who has buried their own father, Gwen’s grief process when her dad (the king) passed away felt so real and raw to me. I definitely shed a lot of tears in the first parts of the book. And I’m not really a big crier. It was so beautifully written.
The pacing of this book got a little slow a couple times but it never lost my interest, I think it was just all of the details included to paint the picture of the events unfolding and the world (which is pretty common in first installments of any fantasy series and why I will not dock any partial stars because it was still a captivating story.
The magic system was really unique, with only certain people having embers of powers and being trained to access and use them, because magic had fallen. And I loved the twists regarding who has what powers, TRYING SO HARD TO REMAIN SPOILER FREE SO JUST READ IT OKAY!
I loved the banter. I loved the supporting characters who were also developed so well.
All in all, I loved the book and I one billion percent will read the next one!

SOME TEASERS:

“You’ve been throwing things at me since you were a wee princess. Did you really think that would stop when you became a wee queen?”

Are you okay? The feast will continue, even if you aren’t here. Also, can I stab him?”

“Got a bit drunk, did ya, you lazy bastard? A little torture and murder not enough to take the edge off?”

“You lie so pretty for me, sweet girl.”

“Tell me more about how you wouldn’t let me touch you if I begged. I do love hearing lies fall from the mouth of my queen.”

“You’re mine, Gwennie. From this moment on. I don’t know how we will manage it, but no one will ever touch you like this but me. Do you understand?”

What a beautiful debut from an author who is just stepping into the world of romantasy!

You know when you've read a great book, when it makes you reflect on the story and how emotional it was. The way Gwen’s grief is portrayed really resonated with me, especially after having gone through various counts of grief last year. The rawness of her emotions, especially in the face of political challenges and personal loss, made the experience even more powerful. I mean she becomes a Queen and now has the responsibility of looking after her people and kingdom. It’s rare to find characters who are as complex and well-developed as Gwen, and her strength, compassion, and determination left a lasting impression on me.

Tyreal’s devotion to Gwen and the tension between them was a beautifully complex relationship to follow. The way their dynamic builds and the way Tyreal shows his love for Gwen was incredibly moving. Plus, the side characters and world-building added so much more richness to the story.

I am looking forward to exploring more of this world, especially with the magic system and deeper character explorations.

Thank you @dani.loughary.author for giving me this ARC and a massive congratulations for a gorgeous debut. 👏 👏 👏

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🔥 Embers of Fate by Dani Loughary 🔥

What if your fate lies hidden within the secrets of the past?

Dani Loughary’s debut Embers of Fate had me HOOKED from page one! At just 318 pages, this romantasy gem wastes no time—no slow pacing, no filler, just pure action, banter, and SPICE. And trust me, my romantasy-loving heart was FED WELL.

This book took me out of my slump and I devoured it! Gwen and Tyreal? That brat x daddy energy?? EXCUSE ME, YES. Probably explains why I was kicking my feet half the time (IYKYK). The tropes? Forbidden love. One bed. Childhood friends. Lovely LGBTQ+ rep. Absolute perfection. The political intrigue? The twists? I GASPED.

The worldbuilding is classic fantasy with so much potential to expand in future books. But what really sold me was the writing—especially the dialogue. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s clunky, forced conversations, and this book had none of that. Every interaction felt so natural, making the banter *chef’s kiss*

I NEED book 2, like, yesterday. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long—Dani, I am manifesting a fall release. ✨

Embers of Fate by Dani Loughary 4⭐️

🌹 Queen/Captain of the Guard
🌹 Forbidden Love
🌹 Only One Bed
🌹 Found Family
🌹 LGBT+ Rep

Gwen is not ready for the responsibilities of being Queen but with her father’s failing health she has no choice. Now an orphan, she struggles to find her confidence in something that she’s been training for her whole life. It doesn’t help that she’s hopelessly in love with the Captain of the Guard as well.

This book got off to a slow start but was still super interesting the entire time. I was sucked right into the world and the world building was easy to follow. I felt as though I knew everyone that was introduced almost immediately. I appreciated the found family aspects of the remaining royals and their guards. The yearning between Gwen and Tyreal was absolutely delectable!! I wasn’t ready for the twists at the end and I’m super excited to continue the story in the fall!

Thank you to Dani Loughary for the advanced copy and the chance to read early! This is my honest review.

Thank you to the author and Kate Rock Book Tours for the free book. Thee opinions are my own.

Embers of Fate is the first book in a new romantasy series. Gwen becomes Queen when her father dies. And the law says she can only marry someone of royal blood. But she and the captain of her guard Tyreal have loved each other since they were children. And when her kingdom of Tavia is in danger, the two of them have to travel together to find answers.

Gwen and Tyreal are so good for each other. I loved joining them on their quest and deeply wanted them to find a way to be together. All of my favorite scenes featured the two of them together.

The magic in this world is so neat, and I am incredibly excited to learn more about it in future books in the series. I won't say more and spoil any aspect of the plot because the magic is so central to it. I also really enjoyed how this book dealt with issues of royalty, privilege, and gender. I was impressed to see a transgender character. All of these additional elements added to my enjoyment of the fantasy world.

Wow such a great debut!!

Gwen was such a strong FMC. She is so so thoughtful of others, polite, and kind. But she did have a feisty side when it came to those she cared about or people who were wronged. There was so much raw emotion from Gwen and the struggles she was going through. We got to see in even the smallest details how losing someone affected her and what she chose to do. Tyreal was such a protective MMC. He would do anything to protect Gwen and for her. He was so sweet and always knew what she needed before she even did.

I enjoyed the magic set up and the world building. It was different and so interesting. I enjoyed all of the side characters and the ending! I was so invested I could not stop and was jaw dropped so many times. So many things I did not expect.

I can't wait to read the next book! Thank you so much Dani Loughary for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the ARC team!❤️

This was a great read! Gwen is a fantastic main character! The character development in this book was wonderful! They are all diverse and complex! She is dealing with the loss of a loved one and on top of that she is now on the throne. Her story is very emotional but she is strong, fierce and determined! Tyreal is a complete sweetheart! The connection and bond between them was fantastic! The story is full of drama, action, political scheming, some spice and a great book to get lost in and I cannot wait for book two! Big congratulations to Dani Loughary on a fantastic debut fantasy romance! Thank you so much for the opportunity to review an ARC of Embers of Fate.

The beginning of the book had me shedding some tears for the King. The death of fathers always hits me right in the heart. I was hooked into Gwen’s story from page one. Queen Gwen is such a strong character even when she is faced with harrowing events. I loved getting to see her become the Queen she wants meant to be and I’m excited to see how much more she’ll grow in the next book. I loved Prince Pip throughout the story as well. He gave comedic relief when needed but like his sister, he was also very strong for how young he is. Tyreal was such a good love interest for Gwen. I loved that they grew up together for the most part. The relationship felt stronger because they truly knew each other. I just love when the MMC IS OBSESSED with the FMC.

With all debuts I’m a bit more relaxed on my critics because the author is just starting to get the art of writing. The writing has a solid foundation and I never felt bored while reading. I think the pacing could’ve been a little quicker, especially with some of the overly detailed scenes. But it didn’t take me out of the story at all. I needed to keep reading and know everything about these characters. I think Dani Loughary has some amazing character work that will only ever get better the more she writes.

If you are looking for a romantasy that features more prominent LGBTQ+ and inclusive characters then I highly recommend checking out Embers of Fate. It was so refreshing to read about a world that doesn’t actively harm the LGBTQ+ characters and a Queen who is willing to fight for everyone no matter who they are.

Anyway, I highly recommend giving Embers of Fate a chance. It’s super quick read that you won’t be disappointed with. I enjoyed my time reading this and cannot wait for the next book!

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For those who are tired of slow burns and want something packed for of actions, with both gripping characters and an action-packed storyline that you are thrown into from the beginning, this is perfect.

From the first chapter, the story is engaging. We are introduced to Princess Gwen as she attempts to evade her personal guards dreading the fact that the position of Queen is about to fall to her.

The characters in this book are all very likeable from the get-go, but this doesn't stop them from experiencing growth across the story. My only wish is that some elements had been introduced slightly earlier.

This is a great book for anyone who loves romantasy but is looking for a slightly new spin on the genre with all the elements that people still love.

Embers of Fate, the debut novel by indie author Dani Loughary, is an exciting introduction to the Hearts of Valine series. This spellbinding tale combines political intrigue, forbidden romance, and hidden magic into an enthralling story that will keep readers hooked from start to finish.

The story follows Gwen Thorncrest, heir to the throne of Tavia, as she is thrust into a role she fears she isn’t ready for when her father’s health fades. Navigating a world rife with betrayal, danger, and political scheming, Gwen must rise to claim her rightful place as queen while balancing her duty to her country and the secrets of her heart.

At her side is Tyreal Blackbane, a loyal commoner sworn to protect her since childhood. But Tyreal harbors a forbidden love for the future queen—a secret that adds a simmering tension to the story. Together, Gwen and Tyreal face an ever-evolving fate intertwined with themes of love, duty, and sacrifice.

The world-building is immersive yet accessible, making Embers of Fate an easy and engaging read. The sprinkling of secret magic throughout the story adds an enchanting touch to the political drama and romance. Fans of steamy romance will appreciate a well-crafted spicy scene that fits seamlessly into the narrative.

Embers of Fate is a captivating tale that beautifully intertwines themes of duty, love, and self-discovery against a backdrop of political intrigue and familial responsibility. Author Dani Loughary skillfully crafts a world where the stakes are high, and every decision can alter the course of history.

Gwen Thorncrest, the main character is relatable in her fears and insecurities as she grapples with the weight of her responsibilities amidst her grief. The emotional depth in her character is amplified by her forbidden relationship with Tyreal Blackbane, whose loyalty to Gwen is both a strength and a source of inner turmoil due to his forbidden love for her. This dynamic adds layers to the story, as both characters must confront their feelings while navigating the treacherous waters of court politics.

The descriptions of the landscape are vivid, enhancing the sense of adventure and the perils that await. The pacing is well-balanced, providing a mix of action and introspection that keeps you engaged.

Overall, "Embers of Fate" is a compelling read filled with rich characters and an intricate plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a story about finding one’s place in the world, the sacrifices made for love, and the courage to embrace one’s destiny.

Oh my goodness, I am absolutely obsessed with this book!!! It kicks off with an intense and heartbreaking start as we learn that Gwen's father, the king, is on his deathbed. From there, the story takes off at full speed! Not once do you feel like it's dragging; every moment is packed with significance that keeps you on your toes. You’ll find yourself piecing together clues and guessing along the way, and when you finally figure something out, it’s a triumphant “I knew it!” instead of an eye-roll moment.

I can hardly contain my excitement for the next installment! I truly wish this adventure didn’t have to end. Now, we’re left in suspense, eagerly waiting for more. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed—run, don’t walk, to grab your copy!

🌿✨ What a fantastic debut!!! ✨🌿

Embers of Fate by Dani Loughary had me in tears, chills, and breathless anticipation all at once 😭💔🔥. This story was so much more than a fantasy—it was a powerful, emotional journey through grief, legacy, and love.

Gwen Thorncrest’s story began in the shadow of her father’s fading health, with the weight of a crown she wasn’t sure she was ready to wear 👑. The way her grief was written… raw, real, and gut-wrenching 💔. I felt her pain like a physical ache, like I was grieving with her. Dani Loughary captured that kind of loss so authentically—it made Gwen’s journey feel personal, even sacred.

Gwen was a revelation. Compassionate, fierce, and thoughtful, she became one of my favorite heroines so fast 🌟🗡️. Walking into power in a world that doesn’t want to see women rule? That’s no easy feat. The political scheming, the misogyny, the isolation—it was all portrayed with such painful clarity. And yet, she never backed down. Her growth—especially how she began to question everything she was raised to believe—was incredibly satisfying to witness 🔥💪.

💘 And then there was Tyreal Blackbane… be still, my heart. From the very beginning, Tyreal had me hooked 😭🖤. His quiet strength, his devotion, and that soft-but-burning “I would burn the world for her” kind of love? YES PLEASE. His forbidden love for Gwen, his role as her protector, and the tension between them—absolutely electrifying. That name he calls her?! 🥹💞 I was kicking my feet.

The plot had everything I love in a high fantasy romance: a rightful heir stepping into power, ancient secrets, political intrigue, a perilous journey to the Misty Mountains 🏔️, a hidden magic tied to blood and fate, and a bond between two people that was never meant to be, but was everything anyway. Every step of Gwen’s path—from the palace to the mountains—was filled with danger, betrayal, and hard-earned truths. She didn’t just inherit a kingdom—she earned it. And Tyreal? He inherited something just as powerful… and just as dangerous 😳🩶.

Even the side characters shone so brightly. Gwen’s brother was the cutest little cinnamon roll 🍞💕, and the bonds she shared with her advisors, warriors, and even the land of Tavia itself gave this world such warmth and depth. The worldbuilding was lush and rich—I could feel the history in every stone, every shadow, every whispered legend. I’m especially excited to see more of the magic system, which felt ancient, secretive, and deeply bound to identity 🌀✨.

This book truly felt like the start of something epic. I’m already aching for the next installment. The secrets still left unsaid, the magic yet to be unearthed, and the romance waiting to finally ignite… I need it all 🥹📚.

Perfect for fans of:
💔 Grief & healing arcs
👑 Heir reclaiming their throne
🖤 Loyal protector x future queen
🔥 Forbidden love
🏔️ Epic fantasy quests
💥 Political intrigue
⚔️ Slow burn pining
💫 Fate & prophecy
💘 Childhood friends to lovers (with serious yearning)

Dani Loughary delivered a bold, emotional, and powerful debut that I won’t forget anytime soon. Embers of Fate burned beautifully—and I am absolutely ready to watch it blaze into a series 🔥👑🖤.

You can read all of my reviews at Nerd Girl Loves Books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this romantasy debut about a young queen, Gwen, and the commoner guard, Tyreal, who has sworn to protect her with his life. Gwen and Tyreal have known each other since they were children and though unspoken, have loved each other from the beginning. That love is forbidden, however, because tradition dictates that she must marry a fellow royal.

Gwen's father dies after suffering a mysterious illness and she becomes Queen far earlier than she expected. Barely given a moment to grieve, Gwen's throne is threated by betrayal and political scheming. Along with her best friend Anya and Anya's husband Max, she and Tyreal journey to the Misty Mountains to seek guidance from a secretive sect of women. The group are challenged along the way and the trouble doesn't stop even after they reach their destination.

Although she's filled with doubt, Gwen is a total badass and rises to every challenge put before her. I love her relationship with Tyreal. He is 100% on her side and respects her decisions and ability to handle whatever problem she comes across and any person that threatens her country. They are vulnerable with each other, don't let miscommunication interfere with their relationship, and talk everything out, which is way more mature than you'd think they be at their age. Anya and Max are commendable side characters with a strong bond of their own. Anya, in particular, is a fantastic best friend and comes into her own badassery by the end of the book.

Some storylines are resolved by the end of the book, and yet it still ends on a great cliffhanger. I can't wait to see what happens next and look forward to reading the next book in the series. I read this book in one day because I couldn't stop reading. I highly recommend you pick up a copy for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from Kate Rock Book Tours. All opinions are my own.

Embers of Fate is a debut novel by author Dani Loughary and the first in the Hearts of Valine series. While I’m stating the fact this is a debut first I think that idea can be tossed out the window. There is nothing amateur or lacking about this book. It is a romantasy for the ages that explores forbidden love, politics and inclusion, and pushes a narrative of equality and understanding.

In Gwen we see strength in having emotion. Despite major loss she is able to persevere and defend herself and her own. Tyreal is a good match for Gwen valuing duty, and her, while fighting the need to serve her in more ways than one. A losing battle for sure but definitely a worthy one.

Aside from Gwen and Tyreal, Loughary utilizes a diverse cast across the spectrum of humanity to provide insight into our own world; which she mirrors in hers. The way this is done tastefully and without it being an intense focus is an excellent highlight on that diversity being a natural part of life.

The writing style falls within the normal expectations for the genre with excellent descriptions, intense moments that bring about emotion and concern that drive the reader to feel for her characters. At one point I wanted to strangle the author because why would she dare put me through that? But that’s the sign of a good author just like a good actor, if we truly laugh, smile, and cry, they’ve done their job, and Loughary does her job.

This is my new favorite read and my only complaint is that I now have to wait for the second book because that ending promises that the next is going to be so full of new things to explore. I can’t wait.

First of all I‘d like to thank the author Dani Laugherty for the ARC of Embers of Fate.

I can honestly say I connected with the characters much faster than I typically do. Within just a few chapters, the author had me hooked, and I even got teary-eyed early on. The FMC’s loss was described so well that I felt it deeply. One thing I really enjoyed was the worldbuilding, everything is vividly described without ever feeling overwhelming or boring, and I could picture the entire castle so clearly.

The FMC, Gwen, is such an interesting character. She’s no typical damsel in distress, and I loved that she’s well-prepared for her role while still carrying a sense of vulnerability and insecurity. It makes her feel so realistic and sets up her character growth perfectly.

The MMC, Tyreal, was someone I didn’t expect to like at first. But there’s one specific moment (which also happens to be my favorite scene) that completely changed my mind. I’m just gonna say “Fu* it”, you’ll know it when you read it.

The story itself was captivating, though at times it felt a little drawn out. Don’t get me wrong, there was always something happening, but I kept waiting for just a bit more, especially when it came to the big climax/showdown.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and it sets up everything perfectly for an exciting second installment. Can’t wait to read more, and I definitely recommend this one to all the Romantasy lovers!

Tropes:
✨Queen X Guard
✨Forbidden Love
✨Hidden Powers
✨Touch Her And ☠️

After Gwen Thorncrest’s father dies, she is thrown into a position she was not prepared for—Queen of Tavia. When Gwen’s biggest secret comes out, she journeys across her realm to protect the one secret she made a blood oath to protect. But Gwen is not alone in this journey. She has the help from close friends and the one and only Tyreal Blackbane.

Tyreal is just a commoner. But he is not just any commoner—at a young age, he swore to protect Gwen. The problem? He in love with her and the law states she must marry a royal. Tyreal must navigate his feeling for Gwen and keep her safe. But when something big happens to him, it puts everything he has ever known up in the air.

This book was everything. I was engrossed with this story from the very beginning, and it is still living rent free in my head. To the point where I have already recommended this book to friends.

Gwen and Tyreal’s story was just so enchanting in its own way. They have been in love with each other for as long as they can remember and have pained them to not be together. And they have the best friends to encourage them and help cover their relationship up if they ever decide to indulge in their feelings.

There are so many elements in this book and they all just mesh so beautifully together. You get friendship, love, adventure, secrets, action, and so much more. And that cliffhanger—I need more. It’s just such an amazing book.

5 ⭐️ Hold on to your britches lads, and take a deep breath through your corsets ladies. This debut novel was absolute FIRE 🔥! In every sense of the word, the plot, the scheming, the delicious tension, and the banter were perfection! Ms. Loughary may have introduced the hottest new book boyfriend, and you all NEED to meet him - his name is Tyreal. We meet our FMC, Gwen, as she transitions from timid heir who loses her beloved father, into a self assured and badass Queen. Aided and protected by her forbidden lover, Tyreal, we watch their chemistry sizzle, and mature into the best relationship. The plot was wonderfully laid out, the world we are in is depicted carefully, and the character progression is done cleverly. The intrigue is great, the little tidbits of magic kept me going. I seriously ate up this book so fast - you all to RUN and get it too! Don’t leave me alone to cope with the cliffhanger I’m on!

*I am so grateful to @dani.loughary.author for my copy, and the opportunity to read and review this book* It’s now available on her website, #amazon , #kindle , #kobo #barnesandnoble !!

4.5 out of 5 rounded up ..

This is a debut that doesn't read like one at all. It took me a second to get into the story (as expected and most stories do) and immediately one of the best things about this book is Gwen and her growth. Her character development was fantastically well written and I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of opposites with who she is as a person. She's incredibly relatable and the world in which she lives, although clearly and wonderfully fantastical, is written like a warm hug of home. I didn't realize how much I love the bodyguard/queen trope until this book and ooh does Tyreal give me the shivers -in the best way. This forbidden love journey is sweet, dynamic, and multifaceted. The side characters are just as standout as the main characters and I loved their parts in the story too.

I have to say Dani does a spectacular job with the political intricacies of this story and there are twists around every corner. The entire storyline and the cliffhanger ending absolutely makes you want more. I truly cannot wait for book 2 and congrats to Dani for this debut because it's definitely not to be slept on. Take note fellow readers, this book will be a must read for this year!

Thanks to Dani for the eArc, I loved every bit of reading this!

This book was definitely an impressive debut for Ms. Loughary who is venturing into the romantasy genre for the first time with Gwen and Tyreal's story. I enjoyed this book for its strong and decisive characters, well-woven plot, deliciously intimate scenes, and of course, for its compelling romance. It's basically a story of a forbidden love between a newly crowned queen and her devoted guard who has been with her since they were children. They struggle with properly handling their longing for one another at the precarious time that Gwen is transitioning into her role as queen. Law forbids their union as Tyreal is not of royal birth, but their devotion to one another cannot be overcome nor pushed aside. Add that to the ever growing threat to Gwen's crown by parties who believe that the power to rightfully rule is theirs, both Gwen and Tyreal indeed face formidable challenges in front of them. The story keeps you on edge all throughout the book,, and though a happily for now occurs at the end of the story, one knows that there is much more to come that is worth looking forward to.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
