Ако вече сте запознати с произведенията от най-известния цикъл на Робърт Хауърд – „Конан Варварина“, трябва да сте сигурни какво ви очаква между страниците на томчето - наивни от днешна гледна точка, но при все това доволно симпатични истории, в които мускулести мъжаги коват съдбата си с мечове и брадви в ръце, независимо дали са тръгнали да свалят тиранични властелини от троновете им, да унищожат зловещи религиозни култове или да влязат в битка с могъщи нашественици…
Разказите и новелите са групирани в три взаимносвързани цикъла, започващи от митичната предкатаклизмена ера на Атлантида и Лемурия и завършващи в ранното средновековие. Прочетени накуп вероятно ще се сторят схематични и еднотипни на част от съвременните любители на фентъзи, но аз нямах проблем да ги погледна с очите на четиринадесет годишното хлапе, срещнало се за първи път с „меч и магия“ през далечната 1991 и на мига почувствало нещо близко до откровение.
Освен класическите сюжети, издържани във въпросния поджанр, тук имаме и творби с хорър уклон, исторически фикции, а нерядко и благо-благо жанрово размиване - например в новелата за битката при Клонтарф, „Залезът на сивия бог“, болшинството от героите са реално съществували личности, но в някои от сцените се мярка… Один.
Любопитното е също, че виждаме един доста мрачен Хауърд, много по-близък до декадентските внушения във фентъзи вселените на другия автор от "голямата троица" на прочутото списание "Уиърд Тейлс" - Кларк Аштън Смит (третият е Лъвкрафт), а лайтмотивът, прокрадващ се в повечето произведения е за мимолетния възход и неизбежния упадък на всяка империя.
Много ми хареса и решението на преводача и съставител, Иван Иванов да добави приложение с всички недовършени чернови, фрагменти и резюмета за тримата герои, като по този начин е превърнал изданието в библиографско бижу.

It's very rare for me to find a story by Robert E. Howard that I haven't read a few times, but it still happens.
The Thud and Blunder is magnificent.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the thought of bashing their enemies with the sharpened bit of a piece of iron, or riding a war horse in a mad charge during a hopeless battle.

Прекрасен сборник от творбите на създателя на “огън и меч” Робърт Хауърд, крул, бран мак морн и черния турлох са класически изградени северняшки образи, груби и силни, държащи на мъжката си дума.
Преводача на сборника се е справил перфектно с превода и всички бележки под линия, поздравления за което. А черновите и недовършените ръкописи в края на книгата са прекрасно допълнение към книгата. Препоръчвам за всички почитатели на пълп литературата.

Mixing historical fiction with fantasy and adding a bit of time travel. This is a weird tale indeed, but a great one at that. This one features both Bran Mak Morn, king of the Picts, and Kull, Atlantean barbarian and King of Valusia.

So, this one has all the elements you'd expect from Howard's stories—fierce battles, barbarian characters, and a dark sense of history closing in. However, the introduction of King Kull through a time-travel twist doesn’t quite work for me.
It feels forced and out of place in a story that otherwise leans heavily on historical conflict and realism, and Kull’s involvement, instead of enhancing the story, comes off as jarring and distracts from Bran Mak Morn’s more grounded struggles. Because no matter what happens, at the end of the day, you have a prehistoric character who basically time-travels to meet a historical character thousands of years after his time, and the main question here is why?
The action is there, but the emotional weight of Bran’s desperate fight to unite the Celts against the Romans gets diluted by Kull’s sudden appearance. The time-travel element feels unnecessary page-by-page, as if Howard tried to merge two of his iconic characters without a clear plan and there's clearly no reason to do this. While Howard’s writing is always great and I always like most of his stories and ideas, the mix of timelines in this story makes it feel a bit off-balance and it lost me.
It has potential, but the Kull/time-travel crossover undermines what could’ve been a more focused, powerful historical tale that has nothing to do with our barbarian.

Отлична книга, представлява сборник разкази от така наречения "пиктски цикъл" на Робърт Хауърд ... Къл завоевателя, Турлох, Кон, Ателстан и други герои са между главните действащи лица.
Книгата завършва с няколко незавършени произведения, които са били доста обещаващи. Жалко, че авторът не е творил повече.
Препоръчвам книгага на всеки, който харесва този жанр.

Review: Exciting and full of brutal action. On par with Conan. It also ties up some loose ends from The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune and further captures the trippy world-bending vibe you would normally see in the Elric of Melnibone series. It even has the multiple main characters from different series appearing in a single story aspect. The best of the Kull stories that I’ve read.

Read a lot of REH stories and this to me is one of his best.Kull is great in this battle against the old Romans and i love how Howard has the Gaels and Bran Mak Morn and his picts in it too.Vikings as well.Good stuff.

Jezik je na žanrovskoj uskogrudnoj razini stvaranja efekata za mase. Valja priznati na uspješnom prikazu akcijskih scena borbe prsa o prsa. Nisam uživao u čitanju prikaza borbe još od kada bijah mlad, kada čitah romane Karla Maya što je bilo dalekih nultih, u osvit ovog tisućljeća.

Radnja prati keltsku obranu od napada Rimljana. Dečki sa sjevera su uspostavili stupicu rimskim legijama. Keltski žrec je magijom doveo kralja Kulla iz daleke prošlosti da pomogne Keltima. Regular, ni maravilla ni pésimo.

[Short story read in The Best of Robert E. Howard Volume 1: Crimson Shadows]
A time travel story! One that really inspired a lot of comic stories where all the REH characters are able to interact with each other.
Bran Mak Morn has Picts and Cromac's Gaels but needs a king to lead a group of Norsemen to defend against Romans in Britain. His wizard Gonar summons Kull from ancient Valusia to help out! A big battle ensues, the ending is great where Kull is still fully convinced it was all a dream until he sees his battle wounds.
Adapted in the backup feature of Savage Sword 42-43 with art by David Wenzel.
