I LOVED everything about this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat with it's action and it's romance between Garrett and Nalena. Just when I thought I figured out what was going to happen next, something completely different happens. The cliffhanger ending has me desperately wanting the next book.

Um...I need a Garrett on my shelf asap! And Nelina! She is best friend material!
This book was hilarious!! I've never laughed so much and thought, "How the heck is Misty so witty?"
Let me give you a couple reference lines:
"He's dressed in all black, but his hair is a shocking white-blond. And he's humping the glass."
"Princess growls like an overstuffed vacuum cleaner caught on a rug."
See? Hilarious! :)
And also swoon. Mega swoon. Example.
"There was a whole world of air, but without you there, I couldn't breathe any of it."
You could tell, or I could, that Misty worked hard on this book. The details, the characters, the thought process. It was crazy and I loved it! It never dragged or got hung on gibberish. There was one point in the book where literally, I jumped off my couch. I've NEVER done that reading a book before, but I was so invested and scared and just in the moment that I did, in front of everyone, but it didn't matter. I just sat back down and started reading again.
So I'm done trying to get you to read this! :) Go read my review for the first and then buy them both! Love this series!! Can't wait to get my grubby hands on the paperbacks!

I really didn't know what to expect with this series. Misty asked me to join the blog tour so I did what I always do...I looked to see if any of my friends had read it that have the same tastes as me and a few had and they loved it so I decided what the heck? I'll try it! Well guess what?! I LOVE IT TOO!!!! Actually I think EVERYONE should just drop what they are reading and go get it and open it and then you will get the AWESOMENESS because you can tell from the first few pages! Can you tell yet that I love this book?
Nalena is awesome! I love her! She kicks butt and she doesn't even know it! I'm waiting for her to figure out how much she kicks butt! After she has figured out what she is, she embraces it and holds onto that Cornerstone! With all things against her she still fights through to find The Key.
Garrett is my new book boyfriend. I wish he could be my Vieo! In Keystone you get the same Garrett as you had in Cornerstone but even better because there feelings for each other are out in the open completely and it's so sweet. My favorite thing about Garrett is that he is protective but he supports Nalena in her death mission. He lets her do what he knows she has to and instead of fighting her on it, he is by her side which is exactly what Nalena needs! They are the perfect match so says their tea leaves :) (another thing you have to get once you read the book!)
Another thing I loved about Keystone is you get a lot of awesome, developed supporting characters. I fell in love with Zane, Robbin, Deeta, Zaneen, Sean, Addo, Nok, and Iris in this book! It's not just about Nalena and the Reeses anymore. The interaction between this group of people made the book even better. It wasn't all completely centered around Nalena and Garrett which makes the story so much better because the Cusp isn't just effecting Nalena and Garrett. It is effecting everyone and with all these characters coming together you get to see that. There are also more interactions and relationships that form with the supporting characters the deepen the story.
All around I think this book...this series deserves more than 5 stars but 5 stars is all I got. Everything about it had me flipping the pages like crazy and now that I'm done I'm dying for more! I just will never be able to get enough! This is a read I recommend to anyone and everyone because I think you can find something that you will love about it!

This book was impossible to put down. One that I read in just under 24 hours. It was that good! It had me sobbing in Chapter 3, swooning over Garrett in Chapter 4, and mostly on the edge of my seat throughout. I felt it was a stronger book than Cornerstone as we got to learn more about the community and the relationship between Nali & Garrett continues to grow. Great new characters are introduced in this book; who else loves the comic relief of Zane? He's one of my favorites. I changed my review from 4 to 5 stars (and I reserve 5 stars for the books that really touch me). I got so emotionally invested in these characters. With the cliffhanger ending (expected in book 2 of a 3 or 4 book series), I really can't wait to read the next book in this series to find out what happens next for these characters that I've grown to care so much for.

So. Many. Tears! I cried at least 3 times in the first 7 chapters. Ridiculous, but I did.
The characters are compelling and the world is richly developed. You learn even more about this secret world of those who protect the human race. The main character is both incredibly strong and blessedly vulnerable. I almost didn't give it five stars only because the internal monologue does get a bit clipped and distracting. Still, it wasn't enough to keep me from adoring the book.

RATING : 5 GARRETT, NOK & REESE BROTHERS STARS!!
There is something about Misty’s writing and this series that is begging to be published.
I really believe this world that Misty has built for me. The characters are ALL brilliantly written.
Zane is absolutely hilarious. He knows his stuff, but he can be the biggest larikan.
Mark and Brandon, Garrett’s youngest brothers, they get issued orders , do as they are told , but in their down time they are bickering and pounding each other like normal boys, yet they are Contego.
Nok, a new character, I want me a Nok, he is the funniest little fellow and he isn’t meant to be funny, he is Verita. He pops up from his many tunnels, a little guy of few words. I did laugh out loud in a scene to do with a Free Ball and Nok and a hole. One of the traits of the Verita is the master of disguise, lol!
There was a scene that had me all, well, I don’t know quite what the words to use. Nervous, agitated, not able to sit still whilst reading, due to what Misty had this bunch of new characters doing. Whahhhh!!! Or Whooop...whoooooop!
Misty writes such a wonderful detailed plot, she really does cover all her bases. I have pages of notes when reading both her books in this series.
The imagination and originality are to be commended. I am rather baffled as to why this series has not been snapped up by a publisher. It’s kind of a wonder of the YA book world for me.
There are more of the awesome curveballs thrown into the story that Misty loves writing and I love being flung about in another direction. Lovely twists and one I didn’t see coming, and I think quite rightly so.
Awwwww, some sad parts that had me tearing up and the funny laugh out loud moments.
I absolutely adore Nalena and Garrett. They are just so spot on for each other.

Well, this is a rather big question!
Visually in my mind Cornerstone and Keystone run like little movies. Action and humour, fast paced, story continually moving in a new direction, but it all weaves together nicely.
All the characters keep me smiling or surprising me. Misty really has a wonderful gift in writing.
There is this beauty about certain parts of Misty’s imagination, when translated into her storyline. I am trying to think of the right words. It’s like she has a spiritual side to her with the whole thing with the Ianua and Addo, Nok, Veritas ,and these groups that have to keep the world in balance and this group of loveable characters that bring this story really to life.
FAVE QUOTES:
“Great. It’s the tampon brigade,” Zane says. He leans over to whisper in my ear, “Beware, the evil twin.”
“Holy crap,” I say. Zane just turns and grins at me. He farts at the same time.
“Now you’ve got it,” he says.
“I knew one day my prince would come.” Zane puffs in a really weak, girly voice. He bats his eyes at me.
Zaneen and Zane shoot down through the ceiling almost immediately, in a rain of dirt and leaves and pebbles, wrapped in each other’s arms and locked in a kiss. They scramble to their feet and skitter apart, gaping at one another.
“Dang it! I thought you were Robin!” Zane snaps, spitting on the ground.
“I thought you were Garrett!” Zaneen says, jumping around and wiping her face as if it’s been doused with acid. It takes a few seconds before we all realize that no one else is coming through the hole.

In Cornerstone, Nalena discovered her mother’s secret and now in Keystone she must follow her mother’s last wish. Find her grandfather’s memory. Nalena discovers that trying to find the memory will be a lot harder than she imagined. With The Fury out looking for the key they are leaving no Ianua community unharmed. Nalena and her new Cura (her community) must come together and work on finding the memory before their enemy. During the hunt Nalena must also learn what being a Contego means. With the help of Garrett and the rest of their friends and family Nali finally begins to find herself.
Will Nali find the memory? Will she finally be free of The Fury?
MY TAKE
In Keystone we pick up right where Cornerstone left off. I must say that being able to pick up right after the last book is great when reading a series! And Keystone didn’t disappoint with the action that started in Cornerstone!
Nali has to go through a re-Impression and then has to deal with the grief of her loss. When her mother’s last words are to find her grandfather’s memory Nali knows she must honor it. But looking for it is not so easy and so her training starts. Nali is a different from the girl in book 2. In Cornerstone she was naive and didn’t know much about herself. In Keystone she begins to grow and to learn how to harness the powers she now has. Keystone is centered on her sacrifice. She needs to protect her loved ones and to honor her family. She harnesses her instinct to protect and works on actually putting that instinct to use. I must say that throughout the book you see her growth and can’t help but adore her.
Sadly all I can say about Garrett was that he was sweet. I loved the way he took his job seriously and was dedicated to his Cura. He is a warrior and you see that throughout the series. Unfortunately he was so detached through the book that I wasn’t even into the romance part of the story. The romance again takes a backside in this book.
What I enjoyed about this book is that the secondary characters are all so beautifully developed and are all a part of the story and not just background. The Cura Nali and Garrett are a part of has to come together and fight against The Fury and also search out the traitors within the other remaining Cura’s in the Ianua. Getting to meet new characters was exciting and learning of the other special powers the Ianua possess is awesome. I have to say that Zane and Robin are one of my favorites, aside from Addo and the Reese’s. Zane and Robin also introduce the Vieo aspect of the story which I will not reveal here. Read this and find out what it is.
Keystone is jam packed with non-stop action, laughs, great characters, and a little romance. I look forward to reading JAMB next!

WOW.... OH MY WOW!!!!Absolutely LOVED!!!!

OH WOW!! I am totally captivated by this book and let me say...
I read Cornerstone (book 1) and Keystone (book 2) back to back and the world that Misty has created here is phenomenal... Unique, explosive, mesmerizing, enthralling... The list could just go on and on with how taken I am with this book.
I also need to say that I am so thankful for being on this tour and getting a chance to know Misty and read her magnificent books...
So, what am I bragging about?
Well, these books bring you in to a world that has such a new, refreshing, unique storyline. I was immediately locked in to my seat and As i began that upward climb to travel on this thrilling journey of twists and turns, moments of heart wrenching, stomach aching scenes, over the top giddiness and just an overall exhilarating ride i knew that as it ended that i immediately wanted to rush and get back on....
Meeting Nalena from Cornerstone and watching her journey through her struggles and come in to her own brought on such pride for her from me. She is someone that everyone can connect with in some form or fashion. The Reese family is such a supportive group and how they have taken her under their wing to guide and protect is heart warming... But the person that stands out the most is Garrett... WHAT A MAN!! As each page turned, I fell more and more for him. He exhibits such wisdom And compassion all the while being such a solid rock of foundation for Nalena. In Keystone he really amps up his feelings for her and when he tells her how her Re-Impressioning went for him... I melted!!!
Needless to say, I loved these books!! Filled with action, suspense, unique world building, and some phenomenal characters... These are books you need to run out and buy TODAY!!

OH WOW!! I am totally captivated by this book and let me say...
I read Cornerstone (book 1) and Keystone (book 2) back to back and the world that Misty has created here is phenomenal... Unique, explosive, mesmerizing, enthralling... The list could just go on and on with how taken I am with this book.
I also need to say that I am so thankful for being on this tour and getting a chance to know Misty and read her magnificent books...
So, what am I bragging about?
Well, these books bring you in to a world that has such a new, refreshing, unique storyline. I was immediately locked in to my seat and As i began that upward climb to travel on this thrilling journey of twists and turns, moments of heart wrenching, stomach aching scenes, over the top giddiness and just an overall exhilarating ride i knew that as it ended that i immediately wanted to rush and get back on....
Meeting Nalena from Cornerstone and watching her journey through her struggles and come in to her own brought on such pride for her from me. She is someone that everyone can connect with in some form or fashion. Misty Provencher has created a completely unique story in Cornerstone and Keystone. I have never read anything like it, and that's a major bonus for me. It's so hard to characterize a genre for the books. They aren't really paranormal, but there are paranormal-like elements (no vampires, zombies or ghosts...). They are an urban fantasy, but unlike anything you've ever read.
Misty is a master at creating characters. The dialogue and banter is so easy to hear. The characters all feel real. And there's a wide array of personalities and even though there are a lot of characters to keep straight I never felt overwhelmed or confused because everyone's distinct voices and personalities kept them all separate.
The romance is epically sweet. I don't want to spoil the first book for those who haven't read it, but the way that things play out in book one was kind of a slow burn. Now in book two we don't get anything too hot and heavy, but while things have changed between them, grown, it still is a sort of slow burn romance. I think that the author did a brilliant job in keeping us invested in these two without annoying us with a love triangle or anything like that.
I loved how this book played out. There was a good mix of emotion. Sadness at first, but never real devastation because of the way it's done and the lightness and banter still presented. There's lots of action and tense moments, but nothing that felt overwhelming to me. It was fascinating learning more about this society as we learned right alongside Nalena. It's a somewhat complicated thing. Not the plot so much, but the history and background of the Ianua (which you'll learn about in book one if you haven't read it).
I very highly recommend you give this series a shot. I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well done it is and you'll fall in love with the world and characters presented inside.

After an amazing first installment to the Cornerstone Series (which you can read my review for, here), I only hoped that Keystone would be able to rise to Cornerstone's high standards. And, I totally wasn't disappointed.
Keystone picks up right where Cornerstone left off. So, if you haven't read Cornerstone yet, you may not want to keep reading.
I'm just going to say it. I LOVE, love, LOVE Misty Provencher's writing. I love how she writes romance. I love how she builds her story. I just love her. This story is absolutely so unique in that you won't find anything else out there like it, you'd be doing yourself an injustice if you don't pick it up.
After Nalena loses her mother and Garrett loses his father, in Cornerstone, the action and intrigue just keeps going. From there, Nalena is forced to reimpression with her Cornerstone or give up the idea of avenging her mother. She makes a tough choice and then she's given ANOTHER tough choice. Deciding to press on, Nalena, along with some new-found Ianua friends, discovers that she is way in over her head.
Nalena is definitely one of my most favorite heroines, as she is CONSTANTLY doing things that I find myself relating to. She's not perfect, but she's so real that I get lost in this series so easily.
And then you couple her with Garrett, and they are just beautiful together. Nalena is constantly going through changes and discovering new things about her life, and it's kind of wonderful how Garrett is always right there with her, helping her understand her role in the Ianua community, but also letting her be her own person.
By the end of the book, I kept looking at my progress thinking, "I don't want this to be over. I don't want this to be over." But, it did end, And now, I'm left waiting for the third installment.

When I read Cornerstone, I did not think it could get any better. Well, I was WRONG! Keystone is amazing, awesome and keeps you wanting me. Garrett, Nali and crew are all back in Book 2. It picks up right were Cornerstone left off at.
Best part of the book: I think the best part of the book is the relationship between Garrett and Nali. It is complicated and (some times) frustrating. There is a continuous pull between them both and I love that because they each need other. After everything that they have been through they both can rely on each other. The other part of the book that I enjoyed was the all around humor. Zane, Sean and others just keep it a bit lighthearted in time of stress.
Not so good part of the book: Nali's self-doubt. Do not get me wrong Nali has been through so much there is no wonder this girl made it this far. However, ever time she finds herself in a situation she doubts herself. Yes, she does work through it to conquer the situation but it was tough to read because you know that she has it in her to be the best but just can't bring herself to it.

Keystone picks up right where Cornerstone left off. Nelena is struggling to fit in to her new life. The secrets were revealed and now more than ever she is confused by the person who betrayed her. The person took something very important and hid it away and refuses to give it up. Nelena struggles with her destiny and at times wonders if it was worth it.
Nelena is in a race with time to find her grandfathers memories that were stolen. She needs them to end this feud between the Cusp and the Fury. Will she be able to get the memory back and restore order or will she see a war for the first time. With Garrett by her side helping her every step of the way she will try and fight for what is right.
Keystone was an EXCELLENT sequel to Cornerstone and is filled with action and romance. What I loved the most about it was that Garrett and Nelena care for each other but it is not this oh my god I love you I need you type of love. It is a friendship that blossoms into more and the more the work together to find her lost grandfathers memory the more they fall in love with each other. I could go on for days about this book but I am trying so hard not to give spoilers because this is one series you have to read to get the full effect of what i am talking about. Way to go Misty and I look forward to more!

I loved this one even better than the first in the series!
The book picks up right where Cornerstone left off, so have a box of tissues handy (things are even worse than they seemed at the end of Cornerstone). Nalena, now left without her mom, must try and find her path in this new world known as the Ianua. With the Fury closing in, the rest of the world thrown into chaos, and Walter's memory still missing, Nalena must learn how to use her new powers so that the can protect those she has left. With plenty of twists and turns still in store for Nalena, and the introduction of some very humorous new characters (I love Zane!). Of course Garrett and Nalena's relationship also develops throughout the story (*romantic sigh*) as he helps her find her feet again. There's also some mystery surrounding their relationship and their energy. I can't wait for the next book to see what that development means for our two lovebirds and what the world now holds in store for them and their friends.

I was a HUGE fan of Cornerstone, the first book in this series, and was eagerly awaiting the release of Keystone, hoping it would have the same combination of romance, action, suspense, and coming-of-age story that it's predecessor did.
I was not disappointed. In fact I was thrilled by Keystone.
Everything about this book drew me in. The complexities of the Ianua are fascinating; I still feel like I have so much to learn about them. The battles with the Fury are tense and exciting. The romance is perfect.
Here is one warning, though: This book will make you laugh out loud and cry. If you are reading it in public - at a table in the middle of a mall, for example - you might look a little bit nutty. It will be worth it, though.

Absolutley hands down the best book I have read in along time. I had to put the book down because life got in the way and I didn't want to pick it back up and read because the thought of finishing the story without knowing the next book was here was exctrucating to me.
I lvoed this book so much more then the first. The love, laughter and pain was so vivid!!
I can't wait to find out who we lost, who survived, to see where we go next and how we win this war.

I'm really enjoying this series. It's an original concept with lots of action and mystery. The romance is slow moving, sweet, and thankfully not even slighty sappy. The main focus of the book is not about Garrett and Nalena's relationship, but about saving this race of people and finding Nali's grandfather's memory in order to do it. Looking forward to book 3!

Keystone Nalena and Garrett are back! An Action packed Love Story! I loved this book! Misty constantly keeps you on your toes, there are so many twists and turns. Even in the middle of an action scene, there is still the love story evolving. Wonderful book!

“Five Stars: This book is action packed and original!
Nalena is still reeling from her tragic loss. Yet, she must somehow pick up the cornerstone and complete her impressioning. Except reimpressioning is even harder and more dangerous and very seldom successful. She grits her teeth and picks up the stone and her body is immediately assaulted with fiery, mind numbing pain. She screams until her voice is hoarse and then passes out. If Nali can survive the impressioning she still has some huge obstacles to face: putting to rest a memory of a loved one, retrieving the lost memory of her grandfather, surviving the onslaught of the Fury and completing her training as a Contego. She has a full plate for someone so young. The paper hoarding days might be a thing of the past, but her problems are even greater. Can Nali become a Contego and find her grandfather's memory?
What I Liked:
* I liked that book picks up right after the stunning events at the conclusion of Cornerstone. Book two begins with a fierce bite as it immediately plunges its teeth into your head and hangs on until the final pages! This book is jammed packed full of action. There were numerous heart pounding scenes that I couldn't read fast enough as I was so worried for the safety of the characters I have grown to love. Have you ever read a scene so fast while your pulse races and then find once you get to the end of the scene you have to go back and recheck some things because your adrenaline was spiking and you were reading in mega fast speed? This happened to me a couple of times. The action was so good!
*I loved the way the members of the Ianua say goodbye to loved ones. They have a special ceremony that ensures their memories will be secure and that the deceased will always be a part of them, so once the ceremony is complete, they no longer miss their loved ones. I was blown away by this idea and thought it was touching and amazing!
*I liked that Nalena continues to grow. She is beginning to shed some of her insecurities and self doubt as she trains to become Contego, a protectorate. Yet, she still has moments where she wavers and questions herself and her new found abilities. I like that she is slow to evolve into a Contego. Her flashes of fear and self deprecation remind us that she is entirely human and vulnerable and it made me like her all the more. I am enjoying watching her journey and seeing her grow. There are some instances where she displays that it is no fluke that she is Contego.
*I particularly enjoy how the romance is developing in this one. It is a deep and thorough connection. Garrett is still just wonderful and I admired his patience and willingness to give Nali her space as was needed. The romance is in someways a slow burner, but in other ways not. It is a mature relationship that blossomed from a hesitant friendship. I look forward to seeing how it continues to strengthen as it progresses.
*All my favorite characters were back, Nali, Garrett, Sean and Addo. I liked that I got to know them even better. Addo was still calm, practical and funny even when his back was up against the wall. He is one of the most unique guru type characters I have encountered. I love that he continues to sport his unfashionable wardrobe (sweats, tube socks and sandals) and he munches lots of cookies. He provides the bright spot in the middle of the chaos. Sean steps up and takes on some new responsibilities as well, and *I was so excited to see his path since he is one of my favorite characters. I also enjoyed getting to know Sean and Mark, the two younger Reese boys, better. They are exuberant young teenagers, but when the chips fall they step up and do their part and show no fear. I really liked that! Finally, I met a new character Nok, a Veritas, he was very interesting to say the least!
*I liked that certain characters ended up surprising me at the end. One with a change of heart and willingness to help, and another that takes a stand and goes against the wishes of the Fury at great peril to himself. It is always nice to see people change for the better.
*I continued to be impressed by the uniqueness of the story line and the world building in this series. It takes a lot to amaze me these days, but this series does just that. If you are looking for something that is incredibly unique check out this series!
And The Not So Much:
*I have few criticisms for this book. I find, though, at times I am still struggling a bit to see the full picture when it comes to the intricate workings of the Iuana and the branches. More details are emerging so I know that I need to just settle in and be patient. *The Veritas are still a little muddled for me. They are a group of small people that burrow underground. I would love to get a better peek into their family structures and lifestyles.
*This book races along at a break neck speed and there is a lot of detail and revelations to soak up. It does get a bit complex at times, so it is best to read when you are completely focused so that you don't miss pertinent information.
*Ms. Provencher has her own unique writing style that I thoroughly enjoy. However, she tends to incorporate similes and metaphors that at times are a bit jarring because they are so different. Sometimes they really work and at other times, I was a bit befuddled by her choice of descriptions. This by no means is a big issue, just an observation. Perhaps, paring a bit on the eccentric comparisons would make the story flow a bit better.
*This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Granted, it isn't one that is painful and horrendous by any means and I was certainly satisfied that I had the answers to the pressing questions that were presented in this one. Misty does leave the reader on edge, though worrying about the safety of some of the characters!
The Cornerstone Series is one that swept me up in its creativity and originality. It has an intricate story line along with genuine and like able characters! I love the characters in this series, they already feel like fast friends. If you are wanting to read something that will challenge your imagination and get you excited, do yourself a favor and check out these books! I am already eagerly looking forward to the next book!

*I liked that certain characters ended up surprising me at the end. One with a change of heart and willingness to help, and another that takes a stand and goes against the wishes of the Fury at great peril to himself. It is always nice to see people change for the better.
*I continued to be impressed by the uniqueness of the story line and the world building in this series. It takes a lot to amaze me these days, but this series does just that. If you are looking for something that is incredibly unique check out this series!
And The Not So Much:
*I have few criticisms for this book. I find, though, at times I am still struggling a bit to see the full picture when it comes to the intricate workings of the Iuana and the branches. More details are emerging so I know that I need to just settle in and be patient. *The Veritas are still a little muddled for me. They are a group of small people that burrow underground. I would love to get a better peek into their family structures and lifestyles.
*This book races along at a break neck speed and there is a lot of detail and revelations to soak up. It does get a bit complex at times, so it is best to read when you are completely focused so that you don't miss pertinent information.
*Ms. Provencher has her own unique writing style that I thoroughly enjoy. However, she tends to incorporate similes and metaphors that at times are a bit jarring because they are so different. Sometimes they really work and at other times, I was a bit befuddled by her choice of descriptions. This by no means is a big issue, just an observation. Perhaps, paring a bit on the eccentric comparisons would make the story flow a bit better.
*This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Granted, it isn't one that is painful and horrendous by any means and I was certainly satisfied that I had the answers to the pressing questions that were presented in this one. Misty does leave the reader on edge, though worrying about the safety of some of the characters!
The Cornerstone Series is one that swept me up in its creativity and originality. It has an intricate story line along with genuine and like able characters! I love the characters in this series, they already feel like fast friends. If you are wanting to read something that will challenge your imagination and get you excited, do yourself a favor and check out these books! I am already eagerly looking forward to the next book!

So after reading the first in this series I bought the box set.
I’ve just finished this one and although I’m truly loving the story, characters, different cultures created, I’m irritated that there are more errors in this book than the first.
I’m the next in the series as soon as I’m done typing this but I’m seriously hoping that it’s not rife with errors as well. (This one would have definitely earned more from me)

There is a lot I can say about this book, both good and bad. Nalena (Nali) as a main character can both be observant and painfully obtuse, especially when the reader can figure it out and she’s sitting here with a, “Huh?” look on her face. There are two moments of this that made me want to reach through the book and throttle her. First, there are the Veritas, which are introduced early in the novel. Nali is told they can “hear everything” then remains confused as the Veritas in question is seeming to answer things out of nowhere. It was too obvious and with all of the things going on around her it should not have surprised her as much as it did when it came out what it was. The distraction she might have felt might have been a good excuse if Provencher had used that as a handicap for her, but instead the distraction during this scene was hardly mentioned and therefore just made Nali look a bit dim.
The second instance is the continued reference to Garrett, the love interest, being her Vieo. Yes, having it not explained to her actually did appear natural. Authors often use the trick of, “We can’t tell you now, you will find out later,” but instead as Nalena asked about it the girls simply wanted to giggle at her ignorance and some of the men just didn’t have time for her. It was natural, but still she should have suspected what it was much sooner.
This book is written by an independent author, it is the second in the series. This means it is judged a little more roughly than the first one. This also means mistakes in grammar are picked apart more. As an independent author the one thing that must be done is this book should have been tread over with a fine toothed comb. Whoever edited this novel did Provencher a huge injustice. There were errors that should not have been made starting at about 20% in and then pretty much every 2-3% after. There were two on one page in one spot. The ending became worse, like the editor just didn’t care towards the end. When it should have been, “me” there was “I” and vice versa, and I’m not just talking about when the teenagers spoke to each other. Errors in majorly published books make me cringe, but they are far and few between. Errors in an independent author’s work only reflects badly on one person and as it is harder for an independent to find readers, it’s probably smart to look these over more clearly.
Now, for the plot itself. Keystone takes a much different approach than Cornerstone. Cornerstone is about a normal teenager girl discovering a world of protectors she did not know. The second is about a girl who is now one of those protectors and trying to protect the very planet itself. It’s a sudden change and might be jarring for some, but it crosses over naturally. The novel takes place almost immediately after the last one so there hasn’t been months to get used to what has happened, which is brilliant and more stories should do just that. When picked apart this is an excellent plot, and while there is a romance in this, Nalena and Garrett can continue their relationship, the romance does not threaten to take over the plot.
As a young adult novel I don’t judge some of the “coincidences” as harshly as I would other novels, because young adult primarily is not about absolutely helpless situations but is a coming of age with magic thrown into the mix. Provencher captures that beautifully and every character that she focuses on grows throughout this novel. Garrett is the only constant, but it’s a natural constant.
I recommend this novel, even if it reached a sophomore slump, I still give it 4 stars and think this is a series worth buying for your teen daughter, or even pre-teen daughter. The romance is light enough that you don’t have to worry about what your child is reading, and even the scenes that involve death are a read that will not weigh heavily on them later, while leaving an impression.

I continue to be impressed with Misty Provencher’s self-published series, Cornerstone. Keystone takes up exactly where Cornerstone left off – Nali has dropped the Cornerstone after the shock of her mother’s murder and she has to go through the very painful process of Reimpressioning.
Keystone was a pretty good balance between racing-around-action and further worldbuilding in the Ianua universe. Because Nali is officially a Contego (warrior) and they’re kind of under siege, she’s constantly around members of the Ianua and absorbing information about their society and enemy, the Fury.
While there were times when I thought the plot was a bit messy, having them run around and get attacked just because for a moment they had been standing still, having FUN, on the whole, Provencher paced the book quite well. Keystone definitely does have a central problem: when Roger died, he refused to let his soul be written by the Alo, meaning he still has the memory of Nalena’s grandfather trapped within him as well. Nalena’s mom leaves her a message from the beyond, which she is able to read, meaning that she is one of the super rare Tralates in the Ianua. (I did get a “special snowflake” vibe here but let it slide.)
The whole “find the memory Roger didn’t want to give up” kind of falls apart toward the end, at least in my opinion. Nalena finds clues and follows them back to Roger’s girlfriend, where they hit a dead end. Then when they’re getting attacking again, and someone threatens Nalena, Roger comes back and rescues her, and she gets the Memory from the bad guy. The only explanation given for his sudden change of heart is that he doesn’t want the bad guy to kill his daughter – somewhat logical since he went kind of berserk when she was born, but also maddeningly inconsistent. He knows she’s gotten the Memory, but unless I missed it, the reader doesn’t know how he got the Memory. It was a little confusing to read and I’m still not sure what happened, even after reading it and going back to make notes.
Romance in Keystone was a little lacking, which I don’t usually have to say about YA books. Nali and Garrett are still together, of course, but they’re so busy running around and solving mysteries and not getting killed that there isn’t a whole lot of time for them to be together. They also aren’t supposed to be touching because it interferes with Nalena’s energy field while she’s training, so the few moments where they could potentially smolder at one another are rather frustratingly lacking. Provencher made up for this, however, with brief spurts of tingly feelings and what I thought was going to be a love triangle but thankfully wasn’t. There’s this kid, Milo, who came to them from a different Cura (group of Ianua) and who seems poised to be a love interest, but then he’s not. Nalena doesn’t play his games, she communicates with Garrett about how Milo tried to manipulate her, and Garrett makes a spectacularly snarky comment to Milo about how he just doesn’t “get” Nalena like he (Garrett) does. There’s also a sweet, melty bit where Garrett sees Nalena in a pretty dress and calls her stunning, just the way his father used to talk to his mother every single day. I may have swooned.
While I would have enjoyed a bit more tingly feelings and romance in Keystone, I think the continued love and support between Garrett and Nalena is setting up a good, strong foundation for their romance as the series goes on. They’re both calm, non-dramatic people who adore one another. While their romance doesn’t have the wildness and up-and-down sensation of some pairings, I really love them together.
In the End:
Keystone was a solid follow-up to Cornerstone, and I’m definitely enjoying the series thusfar. Provencher has created a vibrant, unique world lying hidden within our own world, and I’m anxious to see how the end of Keystone plays out in Jamb and Capstone.

I was so impressed with Misty's world building in Cornerstone. It was intricate and unique. Nali was such an interesting and different character, and yet she was familiar and easy to relate to. Her narrative was clever, and her dialogue quick witted, if not a bit snarky. We were one, she and I. And we were off and running...If you read Cornerstone, you know it was an action packed, whirlwind of emotion. The world is changing and Nali is just learning about herself and her real life's calling. So much takes place and we're left hanging by a thread wondering how she and Garrett will make things work...can they survive the tragedies they've had to endure, protect Mankind, the existence of the Ianau and finally be together? Is that what Nalena really wants? Having gone through what she has, discovering so much about herself and her family's past and seeing how the people in her world can so suddenly change, she finds she's not sure she's ready to make a lifetime commitment to someone she's known for such a short time. She's having trouble understanding all she's become and is becoming more unsure of who she can trust. So this is where we stand at the beginning of Keystone. Right where we left off. We jump right back in to the heartache and confused feelings. And Nalena is not the only one hurting. The Reese's have put everything on the line and as a result have suffered a great loss as well. Their world is complete chaos. What can a poor teenage girl, left out of the loop all these years possible do? Jump in, hang on for dear life and pray you get it right. It's all a bit overwhelming- and exciting...but that's just what Nalena does. She jumps in head (and heart), first. Keystone is one of those stories, where so much has already happened, you can't imagine what else the author could possibly put her characters though. They've endured pain and loss of epic proportions, faced absolute fear and ventured in to the unknown. Well, let me tell you, Misty was just getting started. And that's a good thing for us. We get to journey with some wonderful characters that never give up, even when they doubt themselves and what's in front of them. Always find something good to cling to. And vow that yes, against all odds and enemies, they are indeed meant to be. This book was an insane roller coaster. At times I didn't know what was up or down. The commotion within the Ianua world was unraveling everything. While Nali was attempting to embrace her "new life" everything in that life was changing. Life, as Garrett, the Reese's and the rest of the Cura know it was forever altering. I did mention CHAOS??? Of course there are tender moments between our lovebirds, but the majority of the time, these two are doing their best to survive and find the Key to restoring order to the world. Not just their communities, the entire world, for they in essence keep the balance. I can't possibly say more without giving something away, but I will say, I love Nalena and Garrett. Together and separate. They are amazing characters. Both strong and courageous...willing to sacrifice themselves amidst their doubts, for the greater good. Granted that is how Garrett was raised, but Nali steps up and follows her heart and her instincts, and shows everyone what she's really made of. That in itself, is a great story. Their love for each other is a great story. Garrett is a most swoon worthy hero that gets more enchanting by the moment. Keystone is just as compelling, complex, frightening and romantic as the first book, and yet is still fresh and exciting. You never know what's coming next or even who they're really fighting against. I didn't know what to expect until the very end. Intense. Enthralling. Keystone marks this as a must read series.

If you read my Cornerstone review (HERE it is if you've not) than you know I enjoyed that book, I thought the story was unique, the romance was hot and basically that it was the start of a great new YA series. But there were a few things I wanted to see happen in the sequel. I wanted to see some real growth in the characters, the heroine Nali in particular. I wanted to learn more about the Ianua, their history and backstory. I wanted more action and I REALLY wanted to see Nali morph into the bad ass warrior I knew she had the potential to be. Guys, author Misty Provencher stepped up with her sequel Keystone and gave me this and MORE.
Is there anything worse then the sophomore slump? Be it in literature, music or film? Well fear not friends, Keystone not only defeats this notion but is, in my opinion, stronger, smarter and more gutsy than it's predecessor. Here's why:
When we first meet Nali back in Cornerstone she is bad shape. She's been labeled "The Waste" and ridiculed in the worst way by nearly everyone at her school. She has a dysfunctional home life and the end result is she one of the most insecure and introverted characters I have ever come across. But as Cornerstone progressed, and Nali learns who she is and the role she is meant to play, she slowly begins to come out her shell and her confidence builds.
What I wanted to see happen in Keystone was Nali continue to progress and come into her own. And I was not disappointed! But not all of Nali's insecurities are gone, in fact many have been replaced by new ones, like the fact she is the daughter of a deserter and a murderer. Much of Keystone centers around Nali coming to terms with who she is, or more accurately, who she isn't. The theme of not letting other's past mistakes dictate your life is touched on again and again throughout the book. It's an important lesson for anyone to learn, young or old, and I love that Misty Provencher tackles it.
And even better, Nali begins her training as a Contego, the warrior protectors of the Ianua. It's a slow building transformation, but my girl Nali is beginning to show the signs of becoming a totally kick ass heroine and I am STOKED!
Garrett is back and Nali's relationship with him is evolving as well. Some things occur that puts strain on them, and not wanting to spoil, I'll only say it totally works. It's a GOOD thing to see some conflict in a relationship. It keeps things interesting. It also keeps things real. Relationships take work, things come up, obstacles are thrown in the path, and I think it's awesome to watch how Garrett and Nali handle these things. Don't worry romance fans, there are still plenty of swoony moments between the two.

The only reason this book even has two stars instead of one or less is because of the two side characters-- ZANE & Robin.
UGH. What a disappointment! By the end I was skimming because I was so freaking annoyed. Maybe it's the fact that other fictional boyfriends / couples have ruined me, but there were so many things that just made me roll my eyes and become so irrationally irritated that I skimmed the last 20% of the book.
Dumb dumb DUMB. It was SO dumb that some stupid plot device was introduced near the beginning of the book to literally make it so the main couple couldn't touch each other???? It was the most ridiculous excuse to keep a couple apart that I have ever read! And so most of the book they didn't touch at all, and there was even a freaking scene where Garrett was pouring his freaking heart out to the point where he shed a freaking tear but NOOOO THEY COULDN'T TOUCH AND SHE COULDN'T COMFORT HIM BECAUSE SHE HAD TO BE ABLE TO COMPLETE HER TRAINING AND APPARENTLY TOUCHING HIM DRAINED THEIR ENERGY OR INTERFERES WITH IT OR SOMETHING?
And that's when my mind shoots to all of these other amazing couples who essentially say "fuck the rules" and put each other as their priority above all else *coughs*Daemon Black, Roth, Will Herondale*coughs*. Not so with these two! Sigh. Sighs again. And sighs a third time for dramatic effect.
Whatever. WhatthefreakingEVER.

That part was given to Nalena and her stupidass dad who freaking murdered her mother and her grandfather in the previous book. Oh, and Garrett decided to freaking LEAVE NALENA LOCKED IN THE ROOM WITH THE BIG BAD TO DO HIS DUTY TO GET OTHER PEOPLE OUT SAFELY? Fuck that shit. (Daemon Black would have never done that to Katy. Will Herondale would have never done that to Tessa.) And then he doesn't come back and she gets all tortured and shit before teaming up with the worst character EVER to defeat them all. Why? I mean come ON. The romance had such great potential from the third book and this one completely bombed it out of the water. What? Is it just 'not cool' to put a lot of emphasis on romantic love and romantic relationships?
This book was such a big letdown that I'm beginning to regret even picking up the books in the first place. But I shall give the next book a try. Luckily this one destroyed so much of my investment in the main couple that I won't have any problem dropping this series like a hot potato if things keep going to shit in the next book.
The ending of the book was pretty cute, though. Things could get better. But oh god do I have a lot of irritation to get over.
Edit: Eh, I just looked over what happens in the next book and I don't think I'm going to continue from what I've read.
UGH. What a disappointment! By the end I was skimming because I was so freaking annoyed. Maybe it's the fact that other fictional boyfriends / couples have ruined me, but there were so many things that just made me roll my eyes and become so irrationally irritated that I skimmed the last 20% of the book.
Dumb dumb DUMB. It was SO dumb that some stupid plot device was introduced near the beginning of the book to literally make it so the main couple couldn't touch each other???? It was the most ridiculous excuse to keep a couple apart that I have ever read! And so most of the book they didn't touch at all, and there was even a freaking scene where Garrett was pouring his freaking heart out to the point where he shed a freaking tear but NOOOO THEY COULDN'T TOUCH AND SHE COULDN'T COMFORT HIM BECAUSE SHE HAD TO BE ABLE TO COMPLETE HER TRAINING AND APPARENTLY TOUCHING HIM DRAINED THEIR ENERGY OR INTERFERES WITH IT OR SOMETHING?
And that's when my mind shoots to all of these other amazing couples who essentially say "fuck the rules" and put each other as their priority above all else *coughs*Daemon Black, Roth, Will Herondale*coughs*. Not so with these two! Sigh. Sighs again. And sighs a third time for dramatic effect.

Keystone picks up exactly where Cornerstone left off. Reeling from tragedy, Nalena has to go through the pain and danger of reimpressioning, in order to become Contego, like her boyfriend, Garrett Reese. She survives, barely, only to discover that the worst is yet to come. The new society she has joined is in tatters; danger and conspiracy lurks around every corner. Nalena finds that she has to juggle training with hunting down her grandfather's memory, which could put an end to the war between the Ianua and the Fury.
Let me start by saying that I loved Cornerstone. It was a debut novel that absolutely blew me away. So I had very high expectations for Keystone and, for the most part, it did not disappoint.
The sizzling romance between Nalena and Garrett continues in this book with added passion. However there's a twist: they can't touch each other whilst Nalena is training. Their frustration with this pours off the page and the moments they do share are touching and poignant. I've never read a romance that's so vivid, enchanting and engaging.
The book is fast paced and the tension never lets up. There's always something to get in the way of romance, training or sleeping-especially sleeping! From car chases, to crawling through claustrophobically tight tunnels, the action kept me turning pages long past bedtime!
We're introduced to a few new characters, who are every bit as engaging as those introduced in Cornerstone. Of the new characters, Zane was probably my favourite. Personally, I'd have liked to have seen more of all the Reese brothers. There's just something about that family that drags you in and makes you smile time and time again.
We also find out more about the Ianua and the Fury. Perhaps a little too much. In Cornerstone, one of the things I loved was the almost mystical quality of the Ianua and its various subgroups. We were told enough to have a concept of their beyond human capabilities, but nothing was explained in too much detail. This made it feel more magical.
In Keystone, we get a lot of explanations. For me, there was too much. It detracted from the mysticism, leaving nothing to the imagination and, in places, my mind was left reeling with information when I really wanted to see more about the characters or the plot.
However, this is a small, personal niggle. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would heartily recommend it to anyone who likes urban fantasy or paranormal romance. I'm really looking forward to the next instalment in this series.
