This review is for the webtoon, not for the novel.
This might be a bit too personal as a review. I guess I just wanted to talk about my feelings rather than reviewing the story.
The first time I read a webtoon was back in 2017. I was 15 back then and migrated to Australia with limited English.
Back then, reading was the only joy I had in life. I was pretty isolated as a kid. So, when I moved to a place where novels were only available in English, my soul was crushed. I already had so much hate for myself and my life, and losing that one little thing that brought me joy was simply torture. I hated everyone at my new school because I missed my friends back home. I hated my parents for making the decision to migrate. And most of all, I hated myself. I hated myself so much for being powerless. Because I didn't want to leave everything I knew behind, but I had no choice but to follow my parents' wishes.
That's when I found Webtoon.
To many people, Webtoon is probably just an entertainment platform, but to me, it was a new light. I could barely understand English, but Webtoon was okay because stories came as dialogues between the characters, and even though I still struggled to understand most of it, little by little it helped me converse better in English and helped me learn the language while I could enjoy reading.
True, reading Webtoon is not the same as reading novels, but I was glad that I could still read some stories. I became obsessed with Webtoon. I would read it all the time at school and at home.
I continued reading Webtoon until my second or third year of uni. I think at that point I outgrew my love for it. Most of the stories were becoming repetitive, and my English was better; it was time to go back to reading books. I didn't stop reading Webtoon; I would just read one maybe once or twice a year, and I would leave them unfinished most of the time.
I said all this because some people in my life told me that I'm too old for these "stupid stories that are for children" and "no wonder you are still acting like a child." I get it. Maybe I'm supposed to be reading classic Russian literature, but honestly, I would never ever forget those days when Webtoon was my only happiness.
Now, back to the review. I was super bored last night, and for the life of me, I had no patience reading a book or even watching a movie. So I opened the Webtoon app and went to the completed section and decided to read the first title that was up, which was this one. I looked at the title and I shook my head: "Where's Webtoon heading with these ridiculous stories?" I was sure that I'd only read the first chapter and bail the story. Next thing I knew, I was 32 episodes in.
I think this Webtoon was absolutely beautiful. I know the title is questionable, but I really enjoyed it. Art was good too. I think the characters were written beautifully, especially the ML. I cried so much reading his parts; it was painful, in a good way.
My favourite Webtoon of all time is the Glass Wall and will be the Glass Wall forever, I think, but still, this one was pretty good. I'm not sure when will be the next time I read a webtoon, but I hope it's as good as this. Maybe I should go and re-read the Glass Wall for the 5th time already.
So, if you like Webtoons, I recommend this one. Thankfully, there's no stupid love triangle here, and the angst is really good. I hope you enjoy it (ignore the questionable title, please).
synopsis from webtoon: "When the hand that used to so lovingly hold Annette Rozenberg ends up being the one that causes the downfall of her family, Annette demands Heiner Waldemar give her a divorce. Miserable by his side, no matter what. At odds, the two continue a precarious relationship, only to be met with wounds of the past that bring them tragically together"
i am so so upset that there is simply NO ONE that i can talk to about this amazing korean light novel. the manhwa for this novel is AMAZING. the light novel? even better. this is a second chance romance with a regretful and possessive mmc, there is HEAPS of angst, they are complex characters, and i'm in LOVE with this plot!! please be careful though because it covers trauma; abuse, self-harm, miscarriage, war, torture. otherwise - give this book a go!
all i did was go on a roller coaster of emotions like cry, laugh, scream whilst reading. so it deserves a 5/5
BRO I READ THIS ON WEBTOON AND THAT ENDING WAS BAD ENOUGH FOR ME TO LOSE ALL RESPECT FOR THIS NOVEL. I LIKED SOME ASPECTS LIKE THE EXPLORATION OF WAR AND TRUMA BUT WHY DID SHE HAVE TO GO BACK TO HER ABUSER? WHY ARE WE STILL ROMATICICING ABUSIVE DYNAMICS THIS MAN DROVE HER TO TRY TO KILL HERSELF TWICE FOR GOD'S SAKE

this story is the epitome of 'don't judge a book by its title / cover'
a review of the webtoon , may have vague spoilers
honestly, i never thought i would ever read this, just based off the title. However, i saw a particular reddit post, actually no i think it was multiple reddit posts, that were recommending to binge this webtoon since it was joining the add passes program. And they were recommending it for its complex emotions and approach towards classism and war. Now that was the part that made me really interested, and i also do believe that to be the strongest points
i think going into this with the expectation of reading a drama (and not a romance, despite it being marketed as one on webtoon which damn you webtoon, romance is probably like sub/sub-sub genre) made the reading experience alot bearable especially for the first few chapters, because like... man i really don't know how to say this but like, you aren't exactly supposed to like Heiner, the male mc, as a love interest for Annette, the female mc in the beginning like the author definitely does not romanticise abuse. But as the story progresses, you are really shown the reason why the characters became how they are in the present moment. For Heiner, his immense trauma made him incapable of processing emotions in a normal way, which reflects in his actions. For Annette, her sheltered life and fear of confronting the dark actions of the monarchy made her actions appear frivolous and selfish to the commoners. For this part of the story, it really makes you question how far ignorance of another's actions can absolve one from guilt, and how far is ignorance chosen or bestowed upon you.
my personal favourite part of the story was witnessing Annette's growth and redemption after she i also really liked when heiner and annette FINALLY started properly communicating with each other like 😭???????
anyway, this was superbly well written. The war scenes were emotional, the characters complex and very very flawed, yet so real
Honestly, this series made me cry multiple times. Both characters were hurting secretly and keeping pain from each other. This is not for everyone. I do like the character development for our main girl, she's been through a lot and is trying to be a good and happy person. The commander just needed someone to love him, but he took his hatred out on her. She never deserved that. Really sad but good story.
This was a beautiful story about 2 characters who love each other deeply but due to miscommunication, they tear each other down where there is nothing but mistrust and anguish. There were some parts where I was tearing up. I deeply enjoyed witnessing their journey as they grew and built that trust with one another again.
This made me cry. A lot. Too much miscommunication. Too much heartbreak. What a tragedy when all they both want is to be loved by the other. Not sure if the season's done but will just come back to it when it has more eps.
This one has a good story. Currently on chapter 65. Reading on webtoon.
An incredible tragedy that had me in tears practically the whole time. They are so messed up. They are so bad for each other. A beautiful dumpster fire of a relationship I can't tear my eyes away from.
i picked this webtoon out on a whim and ended up staying up so late to read this. i loved it WAY more than i expected, it really just made my heart clench and the slow pace between the characters reminded me why i loved stories like this. the content was heavy and dark but i think the authors/artist did a beautiful job telling this story appropriately. i can’t wait to tell everyone about this!
