Abby Davies, a principal and school teacher, feels as though she is losing her mind. At night, her dental fillings have been ‘clicking’ in a pattern similar to Morse code. Could they be alien messages? Little does Abby know that higher powers are involved. There are great tasks for her to complete, but the Powers involved manipulate her mind and heart, which may potentially lead Abby to insanity.

Readers may find several aspects of Embraced problematic. The conflict, plot, and resolution are extremely flawed.

I was drawn to this book for two reasons. Reason number one was – the author is a member of the loveahappyending.com group on the web, and I am a member as well. So I suppose you could say we might be virtual colleagues who only ever met in cyber space. The second reason was – the book intrigued me. I already had Embattled the first of Darlene Jones books in my Kindle, although it was still on my ‘to be read’ list, and in retrospect I wish I had read it before I read Embraced.

Embraced was an unusual book with an unusual premise. It was part sci fi and part love story, although this was not the kind of love story where everyone lives happily ever after.

I’ll try to give a flavour of the story without giving too much away. It starts with Abby, a school headmistress. She is a likeable character but she has a problem that is somewhat unusual. She is troubled with clicking sounds in her teeth and is convinced that these are alien messages which she is desperate to decipher. She enrols the help of one of her students, Curtis, a rather unlikely sidekick who is overweight, has acne, bad hair, and body odour, however he is also a geek who helps her unravel the messages.

Cut to an alien environment now. I’m not sure whether this is a planet, or some kind of mythical Mount Olympus, or maybe even Heaven, but it is inhabited by Supreme Beings who are the Guardians of the Universe. In their world Earth is simply a speck that one of their number is assigned to watch over.

The person assigned to watch over Earth is Paul, a trainee Power. Paul, however, is a badly behaved adolescent who is enjoying himself by playing games on Abby. The clicking sounds in Abby’s teeth are his doing, and they actually mean nothing. Paul is supervised by Yves, an Adjunct, who is in despair at Paul’s bad behaviour because he is in love with Abby, despite it being against the rules for a Supreme Being to become involved with an earthling.

Paul continues to mess around with Abby and his interference in her life increases with drastic results. I don’t want to go any further because that would involve revealing spoilers. Suffice to say that Abby becomes more distressed, Paul’s games increase, and Yves becomes more disturbed.

The two interlinking storylines worked well, seamlessly moving between each other, and both held the interest. I did, however, relate better to Abby than the supreme beings, although I really wanted to take Paul by the scruff of the neck and give him a good shake. On the other hand I felt that Yves was a bit distant, and I was more concerned with Abby’s bereavement over the loss of her love interest than I was with Yves unrequited yearning for her.

On balance, I enjoyed reading Embraced, although I would have liked a little more information about the Supreme Beings’ world. I felt the storyline was different, unusual and intriguing. I was saddened by the ending, although there was a note of hope for Yves, if not Abby, and I had the distinct feeling there would be another book to come.

This is a well written novel with themes of control, adolescent behaviour, thwarted love, reincarnation, and godlike supreme beings. And now I’m off to read the first book in this series Embattled’. I wonder if it will answer the questions I was left with about the Supreme Beings’ world?

Darlene Jones has written a story that I would describe as a love story intermingled with science fiction that is both entertaining and heartfelt.

Abby is a school principal who is experiencing peculiar clicking sounds in her teeth and believes them to be a type of communication from an alien source. When she starts finding diagrams and drawings apparently sent from the source of the clicking she recruits Curtis a student and a couple of his friends considered to be “computer Geeks” to assist in the process of finding the meaning and the source of the messages.

Abby is a character than you will feel a great sense of compassion for and as the story progresses you will continue to become embroiled in her life and anxious for her to find the meaning in all of the unusual occurrences that she encounters.

Paul is a trainee who has been designated as the overseer of Earth and Abby. Yves, who has been in love with Abby across many lifetimes, is the Adjunct over Paul. They both are meddling in Abby’s life and the consequences of their actions throw her life into turmoil.

I thought the story was well written and the meshing of the two subplots were woven together in an interesting and persuasive way. The characters were well formed and contributed their own unique perspective and behavior essential to the story.

This story is well written and contains elements that keep you engaged and intrigued.

As I read Embraced, I identified with the character of Abby. What would I do if I were Abby and heard annoying clickings in my teeth? I'd be extremely worried that something was wrong with me. What if the sounds were like a code being tapped out? I'd wonder if I was losing my mind. But what if it turned out that they really were messages from some supreme being "up there"? It sure isn't something I'd tell anyone about. They'd think I was crazy.
Abby is in a real dilemma. And then things get worse for her. She meets the most beautiful man she's ever seen in her life. He says he loves her, but he betrays her. Or does he? He's in and out of her life. He asks her if she thinks she's lived before. He visits without seeming to have to open a door - simply appears. Is he real? She wants him to go away so she can get her sanity back, but can't bear it when he's gone from her life.
And the messages? They tell her to write letters to fix things in the world. And it works! But it's all so overwhelming for her.
Embraced will keep you turning pages to find out how Abby will deal with the bizarre things going on in her life. The author engages and entertains the reader from start to finish. Expertly written and thoroughly enjoyable.

A wonderful blend of sci-fi and romance...

After having read Embattled, I wondered where author Darlene Jones would take the story. I have to say it’s another great read! It’s difficult not to give spoilers, but imagine being able to write down what you would like to happen, your ‘wishlist’ towards making the world a better place in which to live – and it comes true. Well, that’s the case for Abby and whilst it sounds wonderful, the reality is that not only is it a lot to get your head around, it also carries a weight of responsibility with it. Even sharing what is happening means pulling someone else into something that is too weird to comprehend. Abby wants answers, but instead the information she is given is confusing and concerning. She feels alone and longs to find someone to love. But is that her destiny – to always be alone? Even peace of mind eludes her – you will love this story and the end will surprise, but not disappoint!

This is the third novel by Darlene Jones. Following in the footsteps of Embattled and Empowered.

From page 1, I found myself drawn into the story, and immediately sympathized with Abby who was receiving messages from an alien being.

Throughout the novel, there were a number of unexpected plot twists which led to a very satisfying read.

Now I need to go back and read Darlene's first two novels.

More of Jones’ magic in this book and my favorite so far. Abby is set upon by aliens and driven to madness by their manipulation of her. The big question is whether or not she will survive and either way what will come after. Those questions will keep you rooting for Abby and turning the pages in this fast paced adventure sci-fi.
