A great story that focuses on the current situation of the Constitution during our times. Although this book was a work of fiction, it was an entertaining suspenseful thriller. —Reader review for Dark Corners ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
3.5 stars 🌟 but tbh I could give it more as I really enjoyed this book. So go on then 4 stars! A well written book about a serial killer in Boston , 2 fbi agents go on the trail with the Boston police force. I know there’s others in the series following these fbi agents, so I will be getting more of these.
The story is interesting but I found it confusing that they knew Vanessa was kidnapped, and it was distracting that the detectives stepped out into the cold , freezing, chilly, (and more) February Boston air. Mentioned almost too many times.
Blimey this was a very good book. I started it after dinner and read for hours, couldn't put it down without knowing who was killing nude models and inking a tattoo on their bodies.
Drake Reed is a widower and has been matched up with a new partner Leslie Vargas, they are both FBI agents and are called out to view the body of the girl who turns out to be the tattooist's first victim. There follows another 2, all the 3 women are nude models and all have tattoos and the killer tattoos another one on each body. All the 3 women walked home alone and were killed very close to their homes. They have various suspects in mind and one by one are hauled in and while each one is in custody another girl has been killed, therefore each man they had arrested wasn't the killer. I couldn't work out who had done this untl close to the end and was pleased to find I was right!!
I would like to read some more from this author, Kate Rush. Quite an unput downable book! Well I thought so anyway!!
I cannot express how boring this book was. The repetitiveness of the cold/chilling/biting/frigid air of Boston. I don’t know why on earth that was hammered so many times but WE GET IT. Secondly, to go with the repetitiveness, I don’t know how many times I read the word “belied”. It was too many times though. It just felt so lazy. Each suspect was quite literally not the right one until it was. Nothing about them in my opinion made me think they were the actual killer. It wasn’t until the actual killer was introduced and I immediately knew who it was 🙄 so like, if I can guess it… it wasn’t that difficult. I can’t believe I even finished this book.
FBI Agent Drake Reed’s wife was murdered, and her death remains unsolved. He specializes in murder cases involving women, hoping to find his wife’s killer. In this first book, women who do live modeling for art classes start winding up dead. Reed is driven to solve the crimes and keep the killer from killing again while he struggles with letting go of his wife’s death.
I have been going back and forth on this book. Half the time, it was the perfect treadmill/recumbent bike book – tight writing, interesting characters, intriguing crime; and the other half it kept slipping into romance dressed up in mystery clothing and I wanted to smack the author for the overuse of the descriptor “steely.”
But I kept reading because I had to know how everything came out. There was some nice character development, and an action-packed ending where the bad guy got his comeuppance. I wouldn’t go out of my way to read the next book in this series, but it did serve the purpose of keeping me entertained at the gym, and based on that, I’d probably read the next in the series if I came across it.
this was a free amazon download. although a good story it desperately needed a copy editor and a proofreader. her repetition of certain sentences and descriptions became almost painful. yeah, we get it. it's cold in Boston. it's windy. you don't have to repeat all that every single time someone leaves a building and go into such excruciating detail when the people get in their car and you don't need to describe the car at length every time they get in it. the author definitely has the art of good description but she overdoes it. there is no need to go into sch excruciating detail with every single thing that she says. way too much filler. a few times, at the beginning of a new chapter, it seems like there was editing done and then not smoothed out causing choppiness and causing things to be repeated unnecessarily. a good start to the series but not good enough that i would pay for the second book.
She shows so much detail, you can follow the daily winter cold of the city, the old and modern parts, the buildings gaping at you, gasping as they keep the secrets of yesteryear and this morning's, the back alleys of Boston sending a chill down your spine. Every suspect was as good as the killer himself. Ms Rush's mastery of the language comes with a finesse you want to emulate - and you know it's spontaneous. I would love to read more books by her.
You will not regret buying this book and putting it on your Kindle and reading it. It was a quick satisfying read., very intense without blood and gore and without foul language. a very good book read it you will enjoy it. Drake and LESLIE are wonderful. You will like them both. I can’t wait to read more about them and hope they catch all the bad guys.! I highly recommend it read it. It’s good.
Drake Reed, an FBI agent, is mourning his wife who was killed 3 years ago and her killer never found. He specializes in women's unsolved murders. His partner tries to help him as does a long-term friend who is afraid that he can't move one. Women who model and have tats are being targeted. The world of art and murder is challenging. I rate this a 4.7
This pretty good but very long winded. I found myself skipping lines that I knew were coming. The storyline was very unique. That made it interesting. You can’t guess the killer until the end because it’s a late entry into the book. I’m not sure I’d read this author again.
A little predictable and also a little boring. Drake and Leslie are okay but need to really form their partnership. They may be FBI but the local cop they work with is a headstrong and unlikable character. I might give book 2 a chance, but not sure.
Intriguing story and interesting character development. However descriptions often redundant and unnecessary. How many times must the reader know that the cold air made breaths fog. So many idioms, followed by a simile that added wordiness rather than plot development. It did not leave me wanting to read another of this series.
Two lead characters star in this story, one with so much angst inside him you wonder how he manages to function? You get the sense his sidekick has her own story to tell. Gripping who dunnit story with lots of action and red herrings .... Wont say anymore as dont want to spoil it for others. A keeper!
Though it was my first time to read books by Katie Rush, I found this book exciting. The twists and turns, the chase and the final triumph. I would love to read if finally Drake forgave himself for the death of Soph.
There was so much useless detail in this book that I just skimmed through it. Once again an author has told a story about a deranged man killing women for some stupid reason.
Tormented by a loss he can't rectify, Drake Reed searches for one killer and along the way, takes a different killer off the streets of Boston. An excellent study of police partnerships. Highly recommended.
Good start on a series.. good team and final ending..I think I will see what the next one brings. And I hope the closure is in the next book not dragged out through five.
Great introduction to Agents Reed and Vargas. This book is a page turner from start to finish and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is my first Katie Rush book, and I am now a fan of her writing. Within His Reach is what I call a cozy thriller - no gore, high intrigue, and brisk storytelling. Looking forward to the next Drake Reed read.
I liked that the story kept my attention and moved fast. It explained how police work followed the leads. How working with a partner can help with the give and take on an investigation.
The book seemed disjointed to me. After spending most of the book reading about the murders, suddenly the reader was introduced to two suspects. Then in a blink of an eye, the real killer (a totally new character) was revealed! And the book ended……
This is my first book by Katie. I enjoyed the plot very much. It kept me engaged throughout the entire book. This just might make my Top 12 Thrillers for 2025 list. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
I'm not sure what the rave reviews are about with this one. I found the whole plot rather boring, and no character was really relatable. It was also pretty easy to see the very small plot twist. Just not for me.
Audio was AI generated reader! Or someone with a very poor command of English language. I really tried to stick with this but too many mispronounced simple words and staccato pacing were just too distracting. No no no!!!!
I've read two books from this author although never got to the end of either and they are AI generated. Too much description, constant repeating of terms, sentences etc. it's a shame someone is managing to get away with this and make money out of it. Ruining authors creativity and readers passion
It took me a little to get into the storyline, but this book was good. It didn’t have the heart stopping twists and turns I’m familiar with from Freida McFadden, but it was a nice quick read with a final ending
I quite enjoyed this book its a bit caught up in the agents life and about how he is coping but never the less a good story I don't usually read FBI books but worth a read.
