She is on the run, again.

Viviane Greenwell, a badass ex-operative, and a Gifted with psychokinesis and accelerated regeneration, returns to Portugal under an alias. She thought she could live under the radar. But her hopes were quickly dashed.

Now, a secretive law enforcement agency wants to lock her up for breaking their rules. But that's not the worst of it.

Joseph Mendelson, the man responsible for her parents' deaths, is alive. And now he's the new leader of the Order of Thesan, a dangerous Gifted terrorist organization. Aside from a deranged enterprise that could trigger the apocalypse, he also has plans for Viviane. His henchmen will not stop until they hunt her down, dead or alive.

But this time, Viviane is not alone. With a group of newfound allies, she has a chance to stand up and fight back. Will she succeed, or will she be locked away for good, or worse, fall prey to Mendelson's evil plans?

If you like high-octane action thrillers with superheroes, science fiction elements, great characters, and twists like Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, the X-Men movies and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, then you’ll love Mendelson's Return.

It's always quite nice when a new Portuguese author appears. And it's certainly refreshing when their debut novel is a science fiction action thriller.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of action stories (and there's plenty of that here), I quite enjoyed this 'Mendelson's Return'. There isn't a dull moment, but I also didn't find all the fights and shootings (there's also a lot of those) tiring. So I guess it worked for me.

Other bonuses for me were the existence of people with special powers (think X-Men and Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and the fact that all the story takes place in Portugal. Not just Lisbon, which was a really nice touch.

As for the characters, everyone was pretty high-strung. There was a lot of shouting and swearing. Which I totally understand. Had it been me in these guys' position, I would have lost my voice by the end of the first day; I would have shouted so much. This group of unlikely people, Viviane, Adelaide, Heitor and Eric, were annoying at the end of the story. Viviane, in particular, acted very unlikeably, was rude to almost everyone and made dubious decisions. But I liked her all the same, since it was obvious she was a good person. I could also understand her points of view.

Some negative points, at least for me was the weapons' lexicon. It's obvious that Cristóvão did his research, but I was at a loss whenever a weapon's name. I'll admit I didn't look it up, but I didn't want to stop the reading.

Another thing is that there were some typos. I've already reached to the author and told him about them. Nevertheless, I don't believe those will have any impact on understanding, or even enjoying, the story.

So, if this feels like something right up your street, then I will recommend it.

3,5 stars rounded up to four and I'll be waiting for the next installment.

This book is action packed and nonstop from beginning to the end! It really reminds me of the show “24” as the time of day is stated at the beginning of every chapter. You get different character point of views and a heck of a ride.

As a fan of Marvel/ X-Men, this book was especially enjoyable for me. I will definitely keep an eye out for the future books in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
I gave this book one star because I didn't finish it. There was nothing in particular that was bad about it, in fact the first several chapters were extremely captivating, I just lost interest.
