The increased demand for space has created a shortage of unused land to build on. This book represents a fascinating look at 25 small houses belonging to international architects who’ve demonstrated their ability to take full advantage of every square foot available. Projects range in size and include work like the Keenan Tower house, a home-office in New York city, the Phillips House in Chicago, the Moore Honey House in North Carolina and more.
Alejandro Bahamón, an architect, photographer, and editor of architecture books, is the author of numerous publications on contemporary architecture, including Sketch Plan Build, The Magic of Tents, Treehouses, Glass Houses, Houses on the Edge, and (with Ana María Álvarez), Light Color Sound. He lives in Barcelona.
most are not photographed from many angles or with helpful inside space-use pix. Lloyd Kahn's books (Tiny Homes, and Tiny Homes on the Move) give much better insight to how the houses become HOMES. Most of the homes are devoid of furniture - no one lives in them. If this were the first small home book I'd seen, I might get the impression that they are impractical as no one has been found who wants to live in them...
This is a book that is gifted from one of my favorite teachers. I really love this book! It is well organized to look at mini houses with summaries upfront, plans, and several images. You would get to look at houses and decide which do you like and which you don't... I know that many people are not in awe of small houses, but I like the challenge of designing small, efficient homes.
This is a little gem of a book. Some of the houses are so small that they are like grown-up Wendy houses and we all liked those when we were small. You don't have to be interested in architecture to enjoy this book - its got the ahhhh factor.
Since we now live in a "mini" house (256 s.f. plus lofted bed above), thought this book would be inspirational. Mostly a coffee table photo book... the photo on the front cover resembles my current living situation! :)
- beautifully photographed, including blueprints/schematics, complete with architect/designer commentary - this book showcases more than 25 small living spaces (from 1291 square feet, down to 344 square feet)
This book is more of a small coffee table book than a guide for designing or building a small house. Many of the smaller houses in this book are not practical for full-time living.
