This is a very good book. It’s based off of a true story of an owl! The illustrations are really cute! I feel like every page I was squealing about the owl! Did you know the owl has a name? His name is Flaco! I would recommend this to everyone!!
I’m so proud of him for escaping the zoo, because he doesn’t deserve to live in that cage where he can’t fly!! I mean, who heard of an owl 🦉 that can fly perfectly but stuck in a cage? Now you have 🙂↕️. But Flaco does escape (so proud of him 🥲) that’s one thing for sure.
Ok but you have to read this book as soon as possible.
With three little nature enthusiasts and two owls who’ve made a home in our yard, Free Bird was a fun and fitting read for our family! We enjoyed following Flaco on his brave journey to follow his dreams, and the animal facts at the end were an added treat. Even more special? The story is based on true events, and half the proceeds from this book go to support the Wild Bird Fund.

Dream big….. Follow your dreams…. Don’t let someone tell you that you CANT do something….. believe in yourself…. 🦉 These are things I tell my children and students on a daily basis. How lovely to know that Flaco the Owl believed in the same sentiments. 🦉 From the Publisher: “Based on a true story, Free Bird: Flaco the Owl’s Dreams Take Flight is an inspiring picture book for children ages 4-8 chronicling the adventures of Flaco the owl as he escapes from a zoo to follow his dreams of flying free and enjoying freedom in the wilds of NYC. 🦉 Flaco, a brave and determined owl, dreams of breaking free from his cage at the zoo and soaring through the sky. Free Bird is a beautifully illustrated and heartwarming picture book. This tale is a tribute to freedom, courage, and compassion for wildlife. As Flaco learns to navigate the urban jungle, readers witness his transformation from a zoo-bound bird to a free spirit soaring through the skies. Along the way, Flaco makes new friends, discovers his strength, and reminds readers that dreams—no matter how wild—can come true. Beyond the inspiring narrative, Free Bird serves an important cause: 50% of the author’s royalties benefit the Wild Bird Fund, a nonprofit that rehabilitates and releases injured or orphaned wildlife in NYC. This makes the book not only a touching story but also a meaningful contribution to wildlife conservation.
Perfect for bedtime reading or classroom discussion, Free Bird encourages children to embrace bravery, explore their dreams, and respect the natural world. The combination of lyrical prose and soft, inviting illustrations makes it an engaging and emotionally resonant read for families and educators alike. Highly recommended for young animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who believes in second chances and the power of freedom.
This book is based on a true story. You follow Flaco as he escapes from the zoo and is out in New York. He always dreamed of flying free. Being free takes work too, Flaco must practice flying everyday since his wings weren’t used to it, he needs to not get caught, and he needs to learn to find food. While this is difficult it is worth it to have his dream finally realized. What this book is really about is dreaming big dreams. It shares how scary doing something you’ve dreamed of can be but to keep pursuing it. You will meet lots of friendly people along the way and they’ll help you, but you’ll also meet some not so nice people. It lets the reader know the most important part of their plan to fulfill their dreams is themselves and to keep going. I did find the writing might not hold a little child’s attention for long but the message was great. There were owl facts in the back, which we always appreciate. The book also donates 50% of the author’s book royalties to the Wild Bird Fun! Thank you Book Publicity Services for sending us this book to review.
Free Bird tells a wonderful story of never giving up on one’s dreams, no matter how big they may be. We are introduced to Flaco the owl whose only dream is to escape from his cage within the zoo and experience the world around him. Flaco never gives up on his dream and is shown the opportunity to escape by a friendly sparrow who stops by to visit him one night. Once free, we are able to follow Flaco on his many adventures throughout New York City. There are so many aspects I loved about this story! I love the message this story provides for children about never giving up on their dreams. I also love the tour of New York City that is presented very well through the story and illustrations. I also really enjoyed how we were able to see Flaco’s courage and independence develop as he explores his new found freedom.
Overall, this is a wonderful story that provides an inspiring message for readers of all ages! This one is out now so be sure to check it out!
Thank you so much to Book Publicity Services for the opportunity to read Free Bird!
Based on a true story, Free Bird is about Flaco the male Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped from his enclosure at the zoo in NY City and then enjoyed a life of freedom for close to a year. Told from Flaco's point of view and beautifully illustrated, Free Bird is a story that resonates with people of all ages. On the surface it's about an owl making his way in an unfamiliar landscape, but for those willing to look more closely, it's about following one's dreams, overcoming obstacles, learning from others, and being grateful for the chance to be free--all things we humans dream of too.
I love that the book can be a springboard for dialogue with children and their caregivers about so many things. The book's illustrations show other animals at the zoo thinking about a life of freedom away from the confines of the zoo, with room to roam and family. Discussions about how we treat animals, what it means for an animal to live its entire life in a zoo, and even the price of freedom can result from multiple readings of this special book.
I also loved the fun facts about owls after the story. These are accurate, interesting, and perfectly written so the readers come away knowing even more about these fascinating members of the animal kingdom.
Free Bird is the exhilarating story of Flaco, the huge Eurasian Eagle Owl that, after 13 years of confinement, escaped from the Central Park Zoo to realize that he could fly, find his own food, and learn about the wider world outside. Kids can relate to Flaco’s dreams and adventures with excitement and compassion for other animals. The accompanying hand-drawn art is delightful😊. Flaco had many humans rooting for him as he experienced his freedom; it was thrilling to see him roosting in his favorite trees during the day, and hunting at night. It’s important to note that half of the proceeds from book sales will go to the Wild Bird Fund, a rehabilitation organization devoted to treating sick and injured birds in the New York City area.
“Some people said my dreams were too big, but I’ve proved them all wrong. I learn as I go. I’m doing things I’ve never done before. if I can make it here, I can make it anywhere!“
Free Bird: Flaco the Owl’s Dreams Take Flight by Christine Mott and illustrated by Ofra Layla Isler is an inspiring story of an owl who dreams of leaving the confines of his zoo enclosure to fly in the wide sky. One day, he is able to leave his cage to fly free. He is thrilled and begins his adventure. Although he is hungry and is tempted by the zookeeper and the food that is offered, he resists to catch his own meal. During his freedom, Flacco, meets friends and has adventures in New York City. The writing is interesting and I really enjoyed the idea of following your dreams. Illustrations are done in soft, muted colors and bring the story to life. Back matter includes “Fun Facts About Owls” and Author and Illustrator Information. Free Bird will be a fun addition to an owl story time or a unit of study on birds or owls. It will also make a good read aloud for a “Follow Your Dreams” story time.
Free Bird Flaco the Owl's Dreams Take Flight is an incredibly encouraging story that inspires children to dream big and chase after their dreams. In the story, Flaco is in his cage in a zoo dreaming about one day being free and exploring all of New York City. One day he has the opportunity to escape and he follows his dream of flying. He learns to fly, sees new sights, makes friends, and faces adversity. It's a really well written and illustrated book for kids.
Free Bird is a wonderful story about Flaco, an owl in a zoo that dreams of spreading his wings. I appreciated that once he escaped, he faced challenges but he persisted to continue to live his dream of a life of freedom. The illustrations are unique and detailed. The quality of the pages and hardcover book itself are exceptional. Free Bird is a book I’d recommend to animal lovers of any age.

Free Bird is a sweet story about an owl finding its freedom and learning to live in New York City through trial and error. Children will love how Flaco evades capture and tours New York City through lovely illustrations. They will also be wowed with the owl facts at the end; even I learned something!
And the best part?! Half the proceeds from every purchase goes to the Wild Bird Fund!
Thanks Book Publicity Services, Christine Mott, Lantern Publishing & Media for the gifted book.
Flaco the owl spends his days in a cage at a New York City zoo, dreaming of flying free. Based on real life, this beautiful picture book tells Flaco’s story of escape and subsequent journey through the city.
Flaco teaches kids to have compassion for wildlife, follow their dreams, and believe in themselves. It’s scary to be on his own in a strange environment, but he quickly meets new friends and visits lots of iconic NYC sights. Flaco provides a message to dream big.
This was an enjoyable and engaging read that gives opportunity to spark conversation with young readers. I really love the illustration style.
The book concludes with some fun facts about owls — a great bonus!
Did you know…? “Nocturnal owls are more likely to have dark eyes while crepuscular and diurnal owls are more likely to have orange or yellow eyes.”
Half of the author’s royalties are being donated to the rehabilitation nonprofit Wild Bird Fund. So great!
Flaco is a cute picture book and the illustrations are lovely. The book is described for ages 4-8, but some of the vocabulary lends itself more to the 7-8 range in my opinion. I did enjoy the fun facts about owls at the end of the book! This would be a great addition to your classroom library for a unit on owls or wildlife.
Flaco escapes the zoo and follows his dreams! Making new friends along the way and gaining new experiences as he flies through NYC! Such a cute story about a courageous little owl. 🦉
This is a great book about not giving up on your dreams and spreading your wings! It’s a little sad knowing it’s based on a true story but also happy that Flaco got to experience New York City!
I’d like to thank @bookpublicityservices and @lanternpm for sending me a #gifted copy to feature and review today. As both a STEM teacher and a mom to school-aged kids, I absolutely loved the story of Flaco the owl. My kids and I adored the engaging illustrations and hearing about all of Flaco’s NYC adventures! We also enjoyed the bonus facts about owls at the end of the story.
Not only is this book based on a true story, but "50% of author's book royalties will be donated to the Wild Bird Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wildlife and releases them back to the wilds of New York City." If my review doesn't convince you to purchase a copy of this book, than this altruism should.
"Have you ever had a dream so big, so crazy, so amazing, that you felt like it could never come true? I'm Flaco the owl. I know all about big dreams - mine were as big as the sky! After all, this is New York, the City of Dreams."
Flaco's dream was to fly freely; instead, Flaco lived in a cage at the zoo. One day, Flaco finds a hole in the cage and ventures out into the world. Flaco was free!
Since Flaco wasn't used to flying, practice was essential. So Flaco practiced and practiced. Flaco learned to find food, explore the city, and make new friends.
"We owls have a reputation for wisdom, so let me pass on my advice to you: Dream big dreams."
This was a beautiful book with a heartwarming message. It even includes "Fun Facts About Owls!" at the end of the book. I highly recommend this book to all readers.
A perfect fit for our nature loving family's bookshelf! This inspiring story (based on true events) follows Flaco the owl and his journey to freedom. Filled with fun animals facts this book is perfect for any little nature lover or bird enthusiast!
Free Bird describes the story of Flaco the Owl, a Eurasian Eagle Owl that escaped the Central Park Zoo and lives around Manhattan and later died. The illustrations in this book are playful and brightly colored to explains the story for those who may use it as a picture book. Author Christine Mott uses Flaco’s story as an inspiration to overcome barriers and reach for the stars and to not be afraid of new experiences.
This is an engaging book that families can read over and over again, as well as highlighting some of the nature that can be found in the big city.
Thank you, Lantern Publishing & Media, for providing a copy of this book for use as a giveaway on my podcast, Hannah and Erik Go Birding, in exchange for a unbiased review.
“Dream big dreams. Be determined, be brave, be adventurous and believe in yourself.”
This inspiring children’s book follows Flaco the owl on a heartfelt journey of courage and determination. It encourages young readers to dream boldly and be adventurous, while also helping others along the way. The story is simple, engaging, and easy to understand. It was beautifully complemented by Ofra Layla Isler’s charming illustrations. A lovely and uplifting read for all ages.
I cannot be the only person who keeps confusing Flaco the owl with the red tailed hawks who also famously made New York City their home. Fortunately, this picture book helps clear up any misunderstanding caused by the unwittingly cognate names!
Told in the first person, this anthropomorphized tale leads us from Flaco's early life in the Central Park Zoo, where he stares at the walls of his enclosure and dreams of living a life wild and free. One day, a sparrow points out the hole in Flaco's cage and invites him to come join the other birds (lol) in the outdoors. Flaco is hesitant since he's never lived out of captivity. But he has a dream and he's determined to pursue it, even if he doesn't really know how to fly or hunt or survive on his own.
With the encouragement of other animals (lol. Look, I'm sorry, as someone who knows full well what owls actually eat, it's impossible not to laugh at the idea that the small animals depicted in the book would cheer him on instead of immediately running for cover at the sight of him,) Flaco learns how to make his way in the outdoors. Tho his concerned minders from the zoo set out traps to try to recapture him, he manages to evade them all and take full advantage of the sights of New York City, living out his dream of freedom and inspiring others to realize their ambitions as well.
Free Bird is a cute book that takes an interesting anecdote from recent history and turns it into a motivating story for children, especially those who love animals. It's also very much a book about New York City, so will appeal to fans of that metropolis too. It is definitely more fantasy than science, with a strong (and not unjustified) anti-zoo bent, but younger readers likely won't notice or care. I did really appreciate the Fun Facts About Owls section in the back that answered a number of questions I had while reading the story, such as what kind of owl Flaco was. Yes, "was": Flaco's death in 2024 is alluded to in what I assume was meant to be a subtle way, just in case young readers and their parents aren't yet ready to broach the topic.
Ofra Layla Isler's illustrations blend naturalism with expressiveness, with the occasional touch of whimsy to boot. I especially enjoyed those last bits, particularly in the spot art showcasing Flaco interacting with NYC landmarks. But probably my favorite aspect of this book is the fact that half of the proceeds will go to The Wild Bird Fund, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation and education center in NYC. While a bit fluffy for me, personally, there's no denying that this is a sweet book written for a good cause.
Free Bird by Christine Mott & Ofra Layla Isler was published May 6 2025 by Lantern Publishing & Media and is available from all good booksellers, including Bookshop!
Based on a true story, this book follows the adventure of Flaco the owl as he escapes from the New York zoo and finds freedom in the world beyond. It begins as Flaco stares out into the world from his cage, dreaming of flying with the other birds, which visit him now and then. His 'escape' is quick, leaving most of the book to deal with his adaptation to the wild and flying, since he's never had the opportunity to fly freely and doesn't have the strength right away.
The story is told through Flaco's eyes and shows how he struggles with various aspects of being free in New York. I appreciated this take, since it shows the reality of the situation and how being 'free' isn't an instant wonderful perfection but includes adjustment. The involvement of the zoo as they try to catch him is gently added here and there as a live trap peeks up in a couple illustrations and Flaco notices them with a phrase or two, but this isn't about the chase and doesn't press that direction. Instead, Flaco finds himself lonely and needing to learn. There are a few dangers, but these are also on the subtle side to slide with the age group well. By the time Flaco does sink into his new life, readers will be rooting for him and have a new respect for animals that make this change.
The writing flows well enough and fits the audience level nicely. It isn't written with over-excitement or adventure but still holds the pacing enough to catch the interest of more reluctant listeners on better days. The information slides right in with the story adding a little knowledge goodness. All of this balances nicely with the illustrations, which depict most scenes with depth and bring the world to life.
This makes a lovely read for anyone visiting the theme of releasing animals back into the 'wild'. And since a portion of the profits also head toward the Wild Bird Fund, it also offers goodness on that side.
What a beautiful, inspiring, and informative picture book. I was instantly captivated by this true story: an owl who escapes the zoo, to experience what it is like to live free and in the wild (well, New York City anyway!).
You really get to feel how he must be feeling, as the author showcases Flaco the owl's thoughts about captivity and his dreams about living free. We also get to see what it is like for animals raised in captivity when/if they are set free, and how hard it is for them now to fend for themselves. Flaco the owl has trouble flying at first, finding food, and staying safe in the big city.
The book is altogether hopeful, and we can only imagine that Flaco was happy to spend the last part of his life doing what he wanted to do and go where he wanted to go! Its a great book to start the conversation about animal activism, and speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves.
Side note- it is also a great guide to some of the highlights of New York City! As Flaco explores, the author showcases some of the big things about the BIG apple: the Statue of Liberty, the baseball field, the art gallery, and more!
We really enjoyed this story, and are thankful to the author for gifting us this copy!
Thank you to Book Publicity Services for the complimentary copy of Free Bird; Flaco the Owl's Dreams Take Flight picture book.
I had never heard of this real life Eurasian eagle owl named Flaco, who escaped from the Central Park Zoo in 2023, going on to have a adventurous year of exploring the wilds of New York City. Flaco had never lived outside of captivity, but managed to acclimate outside his cage and become a celebrity in the Big Apple, evading capture by zoo officials until his untimely death in 2024.
The picture book is told from the point of view of Flaco himself, and is all about his dream of flying like all the birds he sees flying freely outside of his cage. Readers follow along as he discusses his dream, and then lives it out, learning life skills from other animals and learning about himself along the way.
I loved the simple story and think kids would really identify with Flaco. His attitude and message of "I'd never find out unless I tried" in reference to leaving the comfortable life in the zoo is perspective of which we all need reminders. I also loved that a portion of the book's proceeds go to the Wild Bird Fund.
Free Bird: Flaco the Owl’s Dreams Take Flight is based on a true story of an owl who escaped his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo and made Manhattan his home. The story is told from the point of view of Flaco, sharing his dream to fly free and one day, that dream came true! Flaco escaped out of a hole in the fence and, after practicing to become a stronger flyer, explored the sights in the big city.
I wish there were some different choices made for the illustrations, such as drawings that allowed the reader to see New York truly represented. The illustrations of the Central Park Zoo makes it appear as if the animals live in enclosures that are nearly the same size as they are. And I was confused about why Flaco dreamed of cake, spaghetti, and french fries when he became hungry.
The story’s message comes through to the reader clearly: dream big and never give up. There is a lot of excitement in the story as Flaco’s experiences in the city were sometimes scary, often difficult, and with a lot of excitement added in.
I received a #gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fairly short story about an owl’s life after he finds his freedom. The narrative is of Flaco’s dreams wishing to find the freedom he sees from his cage at the zoo. Finding all the new things about his location outside his cage was exciting for him and meeting new animal friends as well. It was said he didn’t know how to use his wings but it’s a bit unusual in today’s environment not to provide adequate space in which birds stretch their wings and fly a bit. The illustrations greatly added to the story. It was not until the Fun Facts shared at the end of the story that it’s stated that Flaco is a Eurasian owl, not a native U.S. one. That better explains why he may have been in a zoo. Perhaps a comment in the beginning of him stating that this is not his first home and explaining that habitat would have been beneficial. This is an excellent book for families, for schools, and for libraries.
Free Bird is a heartfelt tribute to Flaco the Owl, who captured the world’s imagination with his daring escape from the zoo and his awe-inspiring adventures in the big city. This beautifully told story shines a light on the often-overlooked struggles animals endure in captivity, an important message, especially for young readers.
As someone who has loved animals all her life, yet once didn’t fully grasp the depth of their suffering, I’m grateful that Christine Mott brings Flaco’s story to life in a way that invites reflection and inspires empathy. Free Bird is more than a story; it's a call to consider how we coexist with other sentient beings. For readers of all ages, this book will encourage your compassion to take flight.
