There’s something about hearing a story that can completely reshape how it lands, and Maxine Mitchell’s narration swooped in like a lifeline. Without her voice, I might have quit halfway through, but her energy and nuance made every scene spark alive. Audio truly rescued this one.

Love, Camera, Action by Noel Stark follows Cali Daniels, a scrappy up-and-coming TV director, as she’s thrown into the chaos of shooting a steamy episode of “The Demon.” Jory Blair, the seasoned director of photography, is immediately a roadblock—his skepticism clashing with Cali’s fierce determination. Their banter is electric, like watching two magnets push and pull until they can’t ignore the heat between them. 🎥🔥

Tropes:
🎬 Enemies to Lovers
💗 Workplace/Industry Romance
🎬 Banter / Opposites Attract
💗 Secret/Hidden Vulnerability
🎬 Career Ambition vs. Personal Life Conflict
🎬 Steamy Romance
💗 Emotional Growth
🎬 Quick Progression / Not a Slow Burn

I genuinely admired the glimpse into the filmmaking world. Seeing the crew hustle, cameras rolling, lights flickering—there’s a buzz that feels authentic, and it made me appreciate the grind behind every frame. Cali’s passion is contagious; she’s someone who lifts everyone on set but doesn’t hesitate to stand her ground when her vision is challenged. Jory, on the other hand, has this quiet intensity—he’s battling health fears and a hunger for recognition—and watching him wrestle with letting Cali in felt heartbreakingly real.

That said, the pacing jumped at times. The shift from “we can’t stand each other” to “I’m crazy about you” happened almost overnight, and I was left craving a little more subtle build. There were moments where I thought, “Hold up—did they just skip the middle?” But when Maxine’s voice dove into Jory’s softer side, I found myself rooting for them both, even if the plot felt rushed.

The steamy scenes are undeniably saucy and fun, but they sometimes overstayed their welcome. A tighter edit could have kept the momentum high without lingering too long. Still, the emotional beats—Jory’s vulnerability, Cali’s compassion—landed hard. That blend of insecurity and ambition is relatable, especially when you feel like every career move could make or break you.

Overall, Love, Camera, Action felt like a rollercoaster: thrilling when it worked, slightly jarring when it didn’t. Maxine Mitchell’s narration made it worth the ride—she breathed life into both leads and gave weight to every laugh, sigh, and confession. If you’re craving a peek behind the scenes of a steamy TV set and don’t mind a few plot skips, press play on the audio. 🎧✨

I listened to the audiobook and I really enjoyed the narrator. She did amazingly. It made this experience so much better.
I had higher hopes for this book, since I liked the premise, but honestly I didn't really connect to the characters.

Cali, an up-and-coming director is asked to direct a popular tv show and she butts heads with Jory, the director of photography. But there is so much more to their initial animosity, a chemistry they can't deny for long.

While I liked seeing some heavier topics being included, I simply didn't feel the connection between Cali and Jory, it was very insta-lust that turned to love really quickly. There was far too much miscommunication for my taste, it took away from the story. Also, there were some moments where I definitely cringed. I did enjoy seeing everything that goes into filming a scene and the passion Cali had for her work.

Overall, it was not a bad read. I still think this is a solid debut and I would certainly read whatever she writes next.

Five Jory and Cali stars.

I was in the mood for a strangers to Lovers romance that is light on angst but not an insta attraction / love story. This book delivered and didn't disappoint me.

It has the following Tropes that I ❤️ 😍 love.

✔️ Enemies to Lovers- When Jory and Cali first meet as directors on a new series, it's Calis first big break and shes excited to meet hee idol, seasoned director of photographer 📸 Jory. He's not excited to meet her though. He sees hee as wet behind the ears and he thinks she doesn't know what she's doing.

✔️ Workplace Romance- The main story takes place over a few days as they film an intimate scene between two actors who are in a similar position as Cali and Jory as one is an experienced actor and one is new to acting. They but heads but slowly realize that there's a mutual attraction that they can't deny.

When they give into their attraction, both Jory amd Cali run into roadblocks in their personal and professional life which leads to one of them pushing the other away.

Will they have a HEA like the characters they film? I highly recommend you 📚 read to find out.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Alcove Press via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 stars.
An enjoyable story with a vibrant outlook on the film-making world, “Love, Camera, Action”, by Noel Stark, features engaging characters getting attracted and involved without wanting to.
I liked the characters in general and the building of attraction and chemistry between Cali and Jory, that ineffable, invisible current making them react, clash, diverge, connect.
Cali is a strong, energetic woman, carrying others’ burdens in her shoulders, yet a caring, empathetic person in the demanding, ruthless field of filming.
Jory is going through an anguishing phase and trying to evade, avoid and postpone as much as possible. Cali’s exuberance and light is a much needed distraction and balm.
I liked the depiction of working on set, a blend of cooperation, camaraderie, rivalry. Professionalism, inventiveness and creativity and technical knowledge shine throughout the scenes.
It seemed Cali and Jory got entangled too quickly despite their initial reservations and the peculiarities of the professional field.
The sex scenes went on for too long and felt redundant.
I felt Jory’s medical issues were downplayed and sometimes seemed forgotten.

Love, Camera, Action is a rivals-to-lovers romance between an up-and-coming director (Cali) and established director of photography (Jory) .Who clash while working on a steamy Vampire Diaries-esque show called The Demon.

Stark really lived by the “show, don’t tell” rule. Cali’s competence and passion for her job were shown through on-page actions like : instructing the actors and crew, resolving conflicts, and bringing out stronger performances from her actors. It was well written and genuinely interesting. I felt like I was a fly on wall of The Demon’s set.

For a relatively short book, both characters had enough depth , individually . I liked their dry humour , but the jump from arguing to hooking up was abrupt and needlessly reckless. I kept on thinking “Cali , that man’s dick is not worth losing your job”

This was minor but I'll give a spoiler warning here:

Spoiler Section

#Me Too was referenced and its inclusion was clever! It was (and still is) a culturally significant movement which highlighted systemic sexual misconduct, so it would be relevant in a romance book between a male and female director. While the book was generally supportive of women, one part of the discussion felt clumsy.

Jory is a wealthy , film school graduate. He worked on The Demon for longer, and had opportunities lined up afterwards . Cali, on the other hand, needed this job. She had less director credits, grew up poor and was a substitute on the show , after the previous director publicly denounced #MeToo . She was also belittled and threatened by the —sexist— showrunner.

Despite arguments over their differing directorial styles, building tension led to a heated kiss on set set. Afterwards, Jory worried that Cali would report him to HR and he would be lumped in with the “other men in the name of #MeToo”. He wasn’t abusive like them, but if she was uncomfortable and publicised it, his reputation would be at stake! Ah yes, the ole fear of being falsely accused !And how that “allegedly ruins” the reputation of men in power.

With the prevalence of such discussions in Hollywood, his concern is not completely unfounded. However, this framing positions women in the industry as perpetual false accusers; bloodthirsty vixens who are just waiting to entrap men in scandal, instead of victims.

It was even more odd, because most of his character arc was Cali (and himself) interrogating his position of inherent privilege as a wealthy, white man in film. The narrative explored those aspects, but not his misunderstanding of Me Too? Missed opportunity. In spite of that inconsistency, I liked both characters development, especially cali’s.

Spoiler Section Over

The conflict resolution was a bit too convenient for my taste , undercutting the very commentary it made about power dynamics film , but I digress . Sometimes we need hope!

This was an overall quick , easy listen.Big thanks to Dreamscape Media for the ALC! Maxine Mitchell narrated this, and she was great!.

This was a cosy romance that followed the pattern to the T. There was miscommunication in the beginning and at 80%, blossoming love, and then grovel and a HEA. It was a fun read over all and did not require me to think too much.
Jory was prudent and stoic (I ABSOLUTELY LOVE STOIC HEROES) and Cali is as strong as an oak (so, she obviously does not take shit from anyone). They banter, they fall in love, one of them has a scare and creates miscommunication *cough its jory cough* and they get back together like the love birds that they are.
This would be an ideal read for the lovers of Abby Jimenez

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audio arc! I thought this was a fun listen! The narration was immersive and compelling. The characters were sweet and likable. I do feel like, story-wise, something was missing—perhaps a side story to keep the plot more fresh and interesting. I liked all the characters and would have loved to explore the sisters, or one of the lead actors' character arcs a bit more. Overall, I enjoyed this a lot.

I just finished reading Love, Camera, Action by Noël Stark and while it wasn't my absolute favorite, it was still an enjoyable experience. Huge thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy!!

The plot centers on Jory, a film director, and Cali, an intimacy coordinator who works to make actors feel more at ease during intimate scenes. The premise was really fresh, and I loved how their professional relationship slowly turned personal. The chemistry between Jory and Cali is undeniably hot, and while the spicy scenes were definitely steamy, there were moments that felt a little awkward (mostly because of the roleplaying element). Still, it was a fun ride!

I didn’t expect the emotional complexity of their rivalry, especially since both are vying for the same lead director position. Jory’s doubts about whether he could ever be enough for Cali gave the story a real emotional pull, and his decision to quit for her was such a heartfelt moment.

While this book was an easy and fun read, I personally wouldn’t purchase a physical copy. It’s one of those books that’s enjoyable for a single read, but I’m still really thankful to have had the opportunity to read it early! If you're in the mood for a quick, spicy romance with emotional depth, Love, Camera, Action is definitely worth checking out when it drops on April 22nd!

Currently struggling between serious books about war, I was looking for a light romance to distract myself over the weekend. Love, Camera, Action did not disappoint. Cali Daniels is a director trying to find her spot to show her craft and finally gets a real gig on a famous show. Jory Blair on the contrary is a reputable director of photography, well-known and admired in his field. When both are bound to work together on set, the alchemy is undeniable, despite them being poles apart.

The book respects the usual tropes of romance, twisting it a little bit by providing the point of view of both characters at different moments. It counts on miscommunication to make it a little bit more complicated than it should be, since both leads are deeply good people just not understanding each other.

The author seemed to feel the need to point things out a little bit too much for my taste, leaving no room to interpretation, over explaining their interaction in some parts of the book. I would have liked it to be a little bit smoother. Still, it was entertaining.

Thank you to NetGalley and AlcovePress for providing me with an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was excited to dive into Love, Camera, Action and it did not disappoint! I loved how Noël Stark tackled some heavy topics like being genetically disposed to cancer. Jory’s struggle with his health scare is one I related to a lot due to my own struggle with wondering if I want to know or not know. The way the story also addressed sexism in the film industry felt so real and relatable—it added such great depth to the characters.

The tension between the leads was incredible, and I was hooked from start to finish. However, I wasn’t a fan of the slapstick writing used to break up the sexual tension. It felt a little out of place for me. That said, it’s still such a cute story overall, and I had a lot of fun reading it. Perfect for a cozy weekend!

Wonderful quick romance, following Cali as she takes on a directing role in a chaotic environment, from caring for everyone around to having to care for herself. While taking on this big role, she has chemistry unmatched with a camera man. This romance is steamy and cute all at once.

The writing style and pacing makes this read easy and a perfect palette cleanser. Enough dialogue, enough description, enough depth. This is a good debut novel.

The characters are lovable, and you will be rooting for the relationship. Both characters have depth and emotions and feel real. You are in the world of cinema and directing, so if you like that you will love this. I really enjoyed their banter.

Any romance reader would love this novel, and I would recommend to many.

Cali Daniels is a director of film hired to direct a steamy tv episode. The problem? Cali understands sex, but the intimacy and relationship and love part? Yeah that’s not her thing. That changes when she meets the directory of photography for the show, Jory. They frustrate each other and are the definition of the miscommunication trope. Both are controlling and like to challenge each other. Admits all the hostility and banter, can they both accept that these feelings are something MORE?

I don’t typically enjoy a miscommunication trope, but I did enjoy the banter the two main characters had.

Thank you NetGalley, Alcove Press and Noel Stark for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

In this book, Cali Daniels gets her big break - a chance to direct a fan favorite show where the main characters finally get down and dirty. And let me tell you, Cali is fantastic at her job! She can read the actors very well and gives direction based on what they need, not necessarily what makes sense to her. Not only that, but the cast and crew love her because of her energy and kindness.

But, Cali does have one major obstacle in her new job, well-known DP Jory Blair, who doesn't seem to really be enjoying his job anymore and is just a world-class grump. Once Cali and Jory realize that the tension between them is sexual and not animosity (or maybe it's both at first), they decide to ease the tension and start doing the deed. This leads to amazing work product, but the showrunner (a sexist pig) gives all the credit to Jory, claiming he wants to help him progress in his career.

Cali had a pretty rough childhood, with her mom and sister struggling with mental health issues and jumping from guy to guy. She had to claw and scrape to get where she is today. And, she doesn't believe in love, so this thing with Jory can only be a fling until the season ends.

Jory, on the other hand, had access to a top notch education, as well as the innate advantage of being male. (That is a continuous theme within the book, not necessarily my opinion.) While it may look like Jory has lived a charmed life from the outside, he's also had to deal with loss and constant fear of a genetic predisposition to cancer.

I thought this was an excellent debut novel! It had some depth, spicy scenes, family drama and Cali grew as a person throughout the course of the book. Jory did, too. There were a few times the story seemed to drag a little, but all in all, I'd recommend this book as a quick cozy romance.

Love, Camera, Action by Noel Stark

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5

Up and coming director, Cali Daniels, goes head to head with director of photography, Jory Blair, in this TV set, drama-filled new romance.

Again, I have no idea how I’ve ended up reading so many TV set romances lately. It’s truly becoming a startling amount 😂 The downside to this, however, is that I have plenty of reference for what else is on the market right now in this department. Unfortunately, this one fell into the middle of the pack for me. It didn’t stand out against the backdrop of other similar reads.

My chief complaint with this book is Jory’s behavior, especially in the beginning. If there is one thing I hate, it is an arrogant man. ESPECIALLY, an arrogant man acting like he’s the epitome of “green flags” and “deconstructed misogyny.” Um no, sir, you are not as progressive as you seem to think you are. Jory is told by the showrunner that he needs to “control” Cali on the set, so she doesn’t ruin their antiquated vision for the show. Never mind that Cali is extremely qualified for this job and genuinely cares about it and her cast and crew. Jory can go kick rocks for that. His inner monologue during this time was truly ridiculous.

He also made me so mad when he literally let one of the main actors on the show go on believing that Cali was the one saying bad things about his acting even though it was Jory who said it all. I will give Jory credit for doing the right thing in the end, but he really went about the whole thing entirely wrong. Nevertheless, I was still a fan of their romance and that first kiss was HOT 🥵 Was there a total breakdown in communication on Jory’s part? Definitely. But I was still rooting for them to be together. Once Jory got his head on straight, they were actually really cute together.

I think I would definitely read another book by this author. I just might be a smidge burnt out on TV set romances at the moment haha. I did enjoy the audiobook narration for this book! The narrator did a great job representing the characters.

* Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an uncorrected proof of the eARC - this is my honest review*

Cali is a director looking for her big break. Jory is a DP (Director of Photography) looking to advance. The two clash over the filming of a hot new TV show until it becomes clear that their work, and they themselves, are so much more satisfying when they…collaborate.

This was a fun romance with a lot of behind the scenes of the acting/film/TV world. I’ve never really been apart of that so I enjoyed it, and the narrative was solid. It did feel like a couple of beats were skipped over in the development of Jory and Cali’s relationship though as we seemed to skip from the enemies to lovers section quite quickly (though I wouldn’t really call them enemies to begin with) and more could have been made of the very real possibility that they’d gotten into trouble for hooking up on set. Slightly more refinement on that end would have made the romantic development flow just a little more.

I liked the side characters too, particularly the actors, and felt a little disappointed we didn’t get any resolution to the very odd way we last saw them - I wanted to know what happened next. Perhaps a future book?

Same for the out of left field reveal about Joey’s assistant - a little more show don’t tell could have been included there.

Overall though, I think this was a solid romance especially as a debut. I’d be keen to see more from Noel because there’s definitely room to grow and talent here.

This was a cute read!

I had got in a bit of a slump, with work and family life I was finding it hard to get into anything.
I had the arc audio of this and listened on the way to work and home while I done housework now this sounds like a lot but for me this is not a lot of reading/listening.
This book made me feel I was still in touch with the fictional world in my normal hectic life.
It was easy to follow even after a day or so of not listening, it wasn’t heavy, there wasn’t a bucket of side characters and side stories it was just easy enjoyable listening.

Cali is a director and jory is the director of photography. They need to work together to get the steamy series of ‘The demon’ out.
Close quarter working and a difference of opinion, not only that the previous director is being done for sexual harassment so everything in the work place on edge including the actors.
But cali has always fan girled over jorys work and jory is now starting to enjoy the push back he was never used to getting from previous directors.
Turns out the sexual tension from the actors is also contagious to the production team.

If you like Tessa Bailey you will love this!

Cali Daniels is hired to direct episodes of a steamy tv drama after the original director was fired for being sexually inappropriate. Her first interaction in the set is with the brusque director of photography, Jory Blair. They get off on the wrong foot and have different creative visions resulting in tension. Despite their professional differences, they are inexplicably attracted to each other.

This rivals to lovers, workplace romance should work, but the chemistry between Cali and Jory feels underdeveloped. Both are avoiding relationships for personal reasons and that avoidance gets resolved so quickly that it feels superficial. Also, considering the emphasis on #metoo scenarios, both MCs appear to put the actors in uncomfortable situations that cross the line of appropriateness.

The spicy parts of this book are plenty steamy, even if they seem to come out of nowhere. I enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the entertainment industry.

The audiobook was narrated by Maxine Michell who held my interest even when the plot did not. There’s definite potential here. It simply requires some better pacing and a bit more development.

Thank you Netgalley and Alcove Press for this ARC! This one was a surprisingly spicy one so do not let the cover fool you! A spicy scene director lands a role on a tv show episode where she ends up needing to work side by side with a grumpy photographer. Jory is a very good photographer, but he’s having a health scare and is not in a very good place emotionally. When he meets Cali, he becomes fascinated by her. She’s caring, creative, and wild in a way he’s not used to. However, their new found friendship gets intercepted by the producer who is intent on forcing Cali out of production and shutting her down. Jory is torn between furthering his career, and this new relationship with Cali he is starting to develop. This book was super fun, and a fast paced easy read. I loved both Cali and Jory. Loved the spice, and it was fun getting to be on set with them. I am looking forward to more books from this author, and as her first one it was great! 🎥🎬🌶️

I was definitely entertained by this story. I liked it but don't think I loved it, it's not a reread book.

Cali is an up-and-coming TV director and Jory is an established director of photography. Cali arrives on the scene to direct an episode of a popular TV show, hoping this will launch her career into more. She has ideas, and they're good ones, but Jory doesn't always see her vision and isn't willing to bend. Too bad he's also extremely attracted to Cali which makes things even harder for him.

There's a side story here with Jory getting medical testing after his mom had issues and then passed from cancer. I don't hate the side bit, but it just felt underdeveloped.

The sex scenes were not it for me, I don't know if it was the scenes, or the narrator and the tone given to Jory.

At one point I checked my progress (listening to audio while at work) and could NOT believe I was only 76% into the book. I really thought we were going to be rounding the end.

I enjoyed this read. It was cute, it was fiery, and both characters were stubborn. Plus, the way they made gold/chemistry/creativity flow through their tumultuous feelings and eventual relationship was well-done and just as... blazing on the page as it would have been had this been real life.

The only downside I had was that the characters got together too quickly considering their reservations and the seriousness of what could happen if things go wrong. I mean; neither one had any clue if the other would report them for sexual harassment or anything and yet they both seemed to jump in rather quickly.

However, both characters were fleshed out quite well, and I enjoyed how they worked through their hangups over love.

Could you ever tell a writer was good but you ended up absolutely hating the story? That is how I felt about this book.

I was excited about this book I am obsessed with enemies to lovers and work place romance but no matter how hard I tried I could not get into or seem to enjoy this book.

The characters are impossible to connect to and honestly hard to like at all cali comes off as whiny and Jory comes off as a complete jerk, don’t even get me started on their romance the first time they hooked up Jory was basically taking advantage of her emotional and mental state like what?.

This book was not for me though I would love to see some of Noel’s other work as I can tell she’s a good writer and would love to give her another chance.

Cali is a newbie director that gets her big break by default. She is brought in to replace a director who stepped out of line and while she knows what she is doing, she feels like she might be out of her league. Jory is a director of photography who has lost his inspiration. When he sees Cali for the first time, it's like his world lit up. They butt heads quite a bit and she doesn't do things the way he has always done, but she brings a light to set and a different way of seeing things and is bringing back his spark, one day at a time.
Neither of them know how to do long term, but they can't fight the connection they feel. It could be the best decision of their lives, but it could also bring the production crashing down around them.
I really felt for these two, they had so much baggage but still could see things from the others perspective and work to better each other and the production. I loved the side characters and their stories too and watching them grow.

Love, Camera, Action by Noel Stark had its moments but didn't entirely captivate me. The premise was promising, and I appreciated the behind-the-scenes insights. However, the enemies-to-lovers relationship (one of my favorite tropes) between Cali and Jory lacked depth and didn't feel fully developed. Maxine Mitchell's narration was a highlight, bringing the characters to life, but with the dual POV story, I would have prefered having a male narrator alongside her. The story itself felt somewhat predictable and didn't evoke strong emotions either way. Overall, it was an okay read—not bad, but not exceptional.

Love, Camera, Action is a romcom that’s an enemies to lovers that’s full of tension and desire in the setting of a television show production set. Told in dual POV, this story offers in depth characters that feel real, with complex and relatable back stories driving their decisions.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story which was well done by a single narrator. I listened to most of this story at 2x speed (my normal audiobook listening speed is 1.75x speed).
