catching up on idw since I fell behind. had to go back and reread these issues!
1) whoever says amy is written poorly in idw is just straight up lying. that's my girl... and her riders fit is superior btw
2) I miss rouge
3) I LOVE PHANTOM RIDER <3

As always, the artwork is beautiful and even funny with some of the reactions. In particular, Silver’s face when his flower caught on fire was hilarious.

But most of this volume was filler that dragged on. The mystery comic could have been fun, but it just seemed rudimentary.

The Mimic arc continues and ropes in a racing game. Sonic gets to go undercover, which is cool, but I didn’t find this volume very interesting.

The IDW comics have been stellar, so it’s okay if one out of many is a stinker.

It finally feels like we are making some progress with the main story. It is pretty obvious where it is going, and the "mystery" seems largely needless, but it still has some fun parts.

Unfortunately though, I think I liked the one-shots more than the main series. The ridiculousness of both of them was great. I am not saying the main series should take the same tones, but it was refreshing.

Writing this review, I don't know where I want the series to go. What do I want from a Sonic comic? I like Sonic going fast, smashing robots, and inspiring his friends to live life to the fullest. I like random insane plots from Eggman. I like Knuckles dealing with hard questions and punching his way to the right answer. I like tails going on adventures with Sonic and building cool machines. I like Amy losing her cool and beating everything with a hammer. And it is too late for this, but I like Uncle Chuck, and Sally, and Antoine, and Bunnie.

My hope is that the writing team errs on the side of awesomeness, and can use Sonic to encourage and inspire others. And if Sega would let them, grow Sonic and his friends through hardships and successes.

The humour and playfulness of issues "Winter Jam" and "Spring Broken" are followed up by an exciting addition to the main story arc! With a wide variety of characters at play (including many of those introduced in the IDW run), it's intriguing to watch their differing motivations and perspectives affect how the story unfolds. Looking forward to Volume 19!

Sonic's collected editions lately seem a bit all over the place. They started off collecting the one-shots in their own trades, but now they've been shoving them into the ongoing series trades instead. This results in a lack of momentum for a series that was already pretty slow, since each trade only collects four or five issues usually.

So here we get the three issue snowboarding arc (hence Extreme Competition), which is itself just set-up for the next arc that builds to issue 75. This is fine, but I'm not sure what the fascination with Jet and his friends is other than that they don't have much personality so IDW get some more freedom with them, perhaps?

And then there's the season-themed one-shots, Winter Jam and Spring Broken! which are some more random collections of little one-off stories. Fine on their own, but mostly just padding here.
