On the run…with his child’s life hanging in the balance.
Caught in a hail of gunfire, FBI agent Eli Buchanan’s only thought is to protect his five-year-old daughter. With no other option left, he turns to his ex-girlfriend, US Forest Service ranger Molly Calhoun, for help. Together, they flee into the Pennsylvania wilderness, but the cybercriminal targeting them is hot on their trail. As they navigate the dangers of the wild, Eli and Molly must put aside their past and team up to ensure Skylar’s safety. Will they be able to outsmart their pursuer, or will they become his next victims?
Kerry Johnson has been conversing with fictional characters and devouring books since her childhood in the Connecticut woods. A long-time member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and RWA (Romance Writers of America), she’s a seven-time Genesis Contest finalist and two-time winner. Kerry lives in the Sunshine State with her family, a lazy boxer, a temperamental sun conure, and way too many books. She loves Jesus, long walks, all creatures great and small, and iced chai tea.
FBI Agent Eli Buchanan is supposed to be on a restorative vacation with his five year-old daughter Skylar. Unfortunately, the cybercriminals that he tracks for a profession have found him in the Allegheny wilderness of Pennsylvania and they don’t care that his innocent young daughter is with him. The good news is that Eli runs into former girlfriend Molly Calhoun who is a forest ranger and the two of them team up to safeguard Skylar while Eli tries to investigate why the criminals are targeting him. This book is a fast-paced ride with twists that I didn’t see coming and plenty of surprises along the way, too. I liked the relatable characters and felt empathy towards widower Eli and his young daughter. My favorite character was the indomitable Molly, a heroine who has just met Skylar when she puts her life on the line for the child. The book is a page turner with some intense scenes as the characters move from one dangerous situation to the next. There is believable chemistry between the characters and the setting is perfect for the building suspense and tension within the tightly woven plot. This is a perfect quick read for anyone who enjoys dynamic characters in an authentic setting and facing strong and relentless adversaries. In the wilderness, survival is instinct. In the heart, survival is forgiveness. Hunted in the Forest lays them both bare — and dares you to wrestle through both.
Kerry Johnson drops you into a spiritual battleground where bitterness can take root as fast as fear. Every step Eli, Molly, and young Skylar take through the Pennsylvania woods feels urgent — not just because the enemy is closing in, but because the real fight is happening inside their hearts.
It’s one thing to run for your life. It’s another thing entirely to forgive the wounds you never asked for.
“… Dad hit it hard about forgiveness, even when it’s the hardest option. Because it always will be the hardest option.” Those words are a heartbeat through this suspense-filled story.
The setting is so vivid you can almost feel the branches scraping your arms and the weight of every decision pressing down like thick humidity. And the spiritual tension is even sharper: “…don’t forget that unforgiveness creates weeds in your heart … don’t let weeds grow.” “… {weeds} will choke out the good works the Lord wants to do in and through you.”
Forgiveness isn’t about forgetting what hurt. It’s about fighting off the bitterness that would love to take root if we let it.
There’s sweetness tucked into the tension, too, in Eli’s fierce love for his daughter, in Molly’s bravery and tenderness, in the small prayers whispered when no one else can fix what’s broken: “Please, God. We need you.”
Kerry Johnson carries every part of this story (the danger, the heartbreak, the hope) with a steady hand and a heart tuned to truth. Hunted in the Forest takes us through the wilderness and reminds us why forgiveness is the only way we survive. Not because it’s easy. But because forgiving as Christ forgives us isn’t optional — it’s obedience.
I didn’t want to leave the forest — and I didn’t want to leave these characters either.
Kerry Johnson’s writing is thoughtful, grounded, and quietly powerful. I’ll be first in line for whatever she releases next.
I received a digital copy of Hunted in the Forest from the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. I couldn’t put this book down! I started reading late at night, stayed up way past my usual bedtime, and then woke up early to finish it. Kerry has crafted an incredible story here! In this one, Eli (an FBI agent) returns to his hometown to spend time with his family and his young daughter. But while he's out with her, they’re attacked...someone is trying to kill them! But why? As they run for their lives, Eli literally bumps into his ex-girlfriend, Molly (a park ranger), who ends up getting pulled into the danger too.
Eli and Molly have a complicated past, but with his daughter’s life at risk, and old feelings still lingering, they have no choice but to team up to survive. The real question is: can they keep their lives and their hearts safe from being broken again?
This story is so heartfelt. Eli and Molly’s relationship has a lot of unresolved pain that needs healing and forgiveness, which really added depth to the story for me. And Eli’s sweet daughter, Skylar, instantly bonds with Molly, which only adds to the romantic tension. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!
What a fantastic read! For me, it’s a solid 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!
I am SO curious... will Heath (Molly's brother) get a story?
I received a complimentary copy, and this review reflects my honest opinion.
Hunted in the Forest by Kerry Johnson is the first book of her Forest Ranger Rescuers series. The suspense and action were intense as every turn proved new dangers. I was wrapped up in this story of intrigue and mystery, old hurts and forgiveness, surrendering everything to God for His ultimate plan in life. It spoke to me and moved my heart. Don’t miss this amazing series from Kerry.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
I absolutely loved Hunted in the Forest!! Exciting, action packed, sitting on the edge of your seat romantic suspense with unexpected twists and turns, trying to figure out the mystery of who the bad guy was!! I enjoyed meeting the new characters in this new series!! I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Johnson!! When Eli and his sweet daughter Skylar are under attack, it's up to his past love, Molly to save the day and protect them!! I couldn't put this story down!! I wish I could give ten stars instead of five!! I was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
The story of the FBI agent who has to flee cybercriminals in the Allegheny Mountains is a compelling one. But when Eli’s young daughter Skylar and his former girlfriend Molly were added to the mix, the book became even more satisfying. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and was drawn to Molly, the ranger who studies plants and tries to save things, When she is faced with danger and has to choose to help Eli protect Skyler, she doesn’t hesitate. Molly is courageous and willing to sacrifice for the safety of others, even though that is not her area of expertise. The plot is fast-paced and kept me guessing all the way to the end. I had a suspicion about who the criminals might be, but I was wrong multiple times, since the red herrings were so well crafted. The setting is atmospheric and perfect for the action taking place, with plenty of places to take refuge and lots to enjoy along the way. The chemistry between Molly and Eli was definitely perking, but the relationship between Skylar and Molly was touching. Skylar is a motherless child and seems to bond with Molly seamlessly, knowing that she can be trusted. That bond was carried throughout the story and was a sweet portrayal of the innocence of a child as well as their intuitive knowledge of who can be trusted. Filled with suspense and jaw-dropping twists, this tale is one not to be missed because it has it all: a riveting plot that is fast-paced, characters that popped from the page into my heart, and a setting that was unique and realistic. Another heartfelt, action-packed read from Kerry Johnson! This sweet story will tug at your heartstrings and keep you turning the pages. When FBI cyber agent Eli and his daughter Skylar find themselves under attack in the rugged Pennsylvania wilderness, his ex-girlfriend Molly comes to the rescue. But will they be able to put their past aside long enough to figure out who's after Eli?
Packed with suspense from beginning to end! There was danger, forgiveness, heartfelt moments, and everything I love about Love Inspired Suspense!! So good!!!
4 stelle e mezza Altra storia corta, ma piena di suspense sebbene la rivelazione finale non sia stata una sorpresa. Bei personaggi, sia i due protagonisti che alcuni comprimari.
Wow! I enjoyed this book. I have to say that Skylar, Eli's five year old daughter is my favorite character. This book gives an insight into the Cyber Action Team of the FBI. You think you know your friends, but who can you truly trust?
HUNTED IN THE FOREST by Kerry Johnson is the first book in the Forest Ranger Rescuers series. It is the sensational story of Eli Buchanan, FBI agent, and Molly Calhoun, U.S. Forest Service Ranger. The last time they saw each other was when Eli broke up with Molly, dissolving their two-year relationship, and left town. Years later and with Eli back in town, although this time is full of unexpected, adrenaline pumping suspense and danger, could it possibly be the time to forgive the hurt and see where lingering feelings lead them – if they can survive.
After Eli’s father lied about him cheating on his test exam ending any chance of him fulfilling his dream of playing college football, he’d cut all ties with his father and moved out. He hadn’t been home since. He had remained in contact with his mother, but with her coming to visit him. It was the need to get away, from his father and from the hurt, that led to his breaking up with Molly. While it changed the course of his life, it ended up with him throwing himself into his studies, graduating and getting the job of his dream with the FBI. Eli is a cyber special agent within the FBI working with the Cyber Action Team – CAT. He’d also married and had a daughter – Skyler, who is now 5, almost 6. His wife died last year. Now Skyler is his whole world. She’s the reason, when suggested at work for to him to get away for a while, that he packed up and headed back to his hometown with his daughter for some one-on-one time and time to uncoil from work. He did bring a computer from work with him to try to see if he could get the hidden information out of it concerning Marcus “The Menu” Ryker evenings after Skyler went to bed. He’d rented a cabin close to the Allegheny National Forest and was excited about doing things with Skyler like canoeing over to Frog Island for a picnic lunch.
Molly Calhoun was totally heartbroken when Eli broke up with her. She had been so in love with him and didn’t understand the whys of it. It took her some time, but she’d recovered. She went on to college to get a degree that enabled her to work with and in nature. She’s now a botanist for U.S. Forest Service. She’d always thought she would get married and have children, but neither had happened and very likely never would. Medical issues had required surgery, at which time she had been told it would be very likely she could never have children. She loved kids, but she’ll have to be happy loving other people’s children. She’s doing what she loves – out in nature and enjoying the peace and quiet of exploring, finding and recording plants. That’s what she was doing on this day over on Frog Island when she heard gunshot. It wasn’t hunting season so why were there shots? While trying to decide whether to go find out or to call it in, first she was surprised when a man carrying a child came running her way and the she was shocked to see that it was the man she’s once loved and thought she would never see again – Eli. When he quickly explained what was happening, they took off for her canoe trying to escape with bullets flying.
Can they escape? Who is after Eli and why? Will they be able to figure things out – in between attacks – before one or all of them are killed? While Eli would do anything and everything to keep Skyler safe, it seems to be Molly’s loving nature and knowing what to do that helps Skyler reassured that all is ok and calm. While Eli feels terrible about bringing this danger onto Molly, he’s extremely thankful for having her there for Skyler. How many attacks can they take before one of them hits their mark? Trips to the ER keep putting band-aids on the injuries, but will the body eventually say “that’s enough”? Spending time together and each seeing the loving nature of the other towards Skyler have their hearts healing from the past? If it does, is there the slightest hope of a future together or dare they dream? Will Molly’s words of forgiveness resonate within Eli giving him second thought about forgiving his father for past deeds? Can Eli, while working alongside Heath, Molly’s brother, gain his forgiveness and his friendship back? When danger lurks even closer and the danger of death is near, will Molly and Eli even have the chance to explore the maybes?
HUNTED IN THE FOREST is an exceptional edge of your seat suspenseful, danger around every corner book that will have you quicky turning pages in a book you won’t be able to put down once. Kerry Johnson gives us a story about making peace with one’s past, forgiveness – the act of forgiving others in order to set ourselves free of hatred, selflessness actions - willingness to put your life on the line for someone else, sweet romance and undying love, true character, bravery and wraps it all in a wonderful thread of faith.
Loved this quote said by Molly’s – “Don’t forget that unforgiveness creates weed in your heart, Eli. Don’t let the weed grow. They’ll choke out the good works the Lord wants to do in and through you.”
HUNTED IN THE FOREST is definitely FIVE STAR reading. I highly recommend to everyone! It’s a do not miss – gotta read type book!
I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #HuntedInTheForest #KerryJohnson #LoveInspiredSuspense #InspirationalRomance
When Eli Buchanan heads to his small hometown with his five-year-old daughter, Skylar, he doesn’t expect to find danger around every corner. However, it seems that a case he’s been working on as an FBI cybercrime expert has followed them. Molly Calhoun was Eli’s first love, and he broke her heart when he left after high school. Now it’s up to Molly, a forest service ranger, to help Eli keep his daughter safe.
Whether you’re a longtime Love Inspired Suspense reader or you’ve just discovered these books, if you love suspense, you’re going to love Hunted in the Forest by Kerry Johnson! I could not put this book down, and I read it in a matter of hours because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next! The characters drew me in right away. The suspense plus the second-chance romance kept me riveted! It was endearing to see how quickly Skylar became attached to Molly. Having lost her mom the year before, Skylar had been very withdrawn and quiet, but she opened up with Molly. Eli’s protective nature and Molly’s steady presence were evident throughout the story.
Weaved throughout the story, the message of forgiveness gave it a deep, emotional layer. I won’t go into who needed to forgive whom and why since that would give too much away. However, it really spoke to me. There are times when I think I’ve forgiven someone, only to have a memory pop-up about how they hurt me. Then I’ve got to forgive them all over again. Unforgiveness damages relationships and causes bitterness to take root. We’re commanded by God to forgive just as we’ve been forgiven. The characters realize how freeing forgiveness is, and the way the book portrays it brought tears to my eyes.
I highly recommend Hunted in the Forest for its compelling and fast-moving plot, engaging characters, page-turning suspense, sweet second-chance romance, and inspiring theme of forgiveness. I loved it, and it gets 5 stars from me!

Filled with danger, tension, and fast-paced action, 'Hunted in the Forest' is an engaging story for fans of this genre . . .
This book is a strong introduction to the author's 'Forest Ranger Rescuers' series.
FBI agent, Eli Buchanan, is on vacation with his five-year-old daughter, Skylar. They are celebrating the little girl's upcoming birthday by spending time in the Alleghany Wilderness near Eli's hometown of Holloway, Pennsylvania.
The two are still reeling from the tragic death of Eli's wife and Skylar's mother, Lori, a few months ago. He longs to see his daughter smile again and thought some father-daughter time in nature would help Skylar to forget her loss for a little while.
It soon becomes apparent that they are being stalked by a group of dangerous people. In his work as an FBI Cyber Special Agent on the Cyber Action Team (CAT), Eli was forced to deal with some highly-dangerous cybercriminals. When bullets start flying toward Skylar and Eli, his main concern is keeping his little girl safe from harm.
This well-written story is filled with action and unusual scenes involving the terrain and water features of the wilderness area. Although it is awkward, Eli is forced to ask his former girlfriend, Molly Calhoun, US Forest Service ranger for assistance.
Molly and Eli work together to overcome great obstacles from the past and present while keeping Skylar safe. Eventually the main characters solve many issues that have plagued them for years. I enjoy reading stories where the characters experience a lot of personal growth, and Eli's transformation was exciting.
This is a story of faith, trust, healing, and love. The book is completely clean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from the author to read in preparation for an upcoming event through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.
If you are a fan of suspense—or simply want a great book to read—you have to pick up a copy of Hunted in the Forest by Kerry Johnson! The tension begins right away and continues to mount until the very end of the story.
Who would threaten a man on an outing with his young daughter? FBI agent Eli Buchanan wants nothing more than to enjoy a little vacation with his preschooler, Skylar, but their peaceful canoe trip down the river in Allegheny National Forest is interrupted by gunfire. They manage to make it to a small island but have no means of escape until they are rescued by U.S. Forest Service ranger Molly Calhoun, the girl whose heart Eli broke years ago.
Danger finds them wherever they go as they try desperately to keep Skylar safe and to figure out who is pursuing them and why. Somehow, they will need to find a way to put past hurts and disappointment aside if they want to survive.
Kerry Johnson tells an excellent story chocked full of suspense with just enough romance and faith thrown in to add depth. The characters are well-developed and believable. Descriptions are so vivid you will feel like you are in the thick of the action with Molly and Eli. You will need to use all of your deciphering skills to figure out who all the villains are, but you will still probably be surprised at the resolution.
I can easily and honestly give Hunted in the Forest a resounding five-star rating!
Book One of the Forest Ranger Rescuers series, Hunted in the Forest by Kerry Johnson is a quick and engaging read.
The novel follows Eli Buchanan, an FBI Cyber Special Agent, and his five year old daughter, Skylar, as unexpected trouble finds them on their vacation to his hometown in the Pennsylvania wilderness. Thankfully, Eli’s high school sweetheart, Forest Ranger Molly Calhoun, is nearby—and able to help Eli outwit and escape the cybercriminal determined to gun him down. Who knew investigating cyber crimes could be so dangerous?
My favorite quote in Hunted in the Forest is tied to the novel’s major theme of forgiveness: “Just don’t forget that unforgiveness creates weeds in your heart, Eli. Don’t let the weeds grow. They’ll choke out the good works the Lord wants to do in and through you.” May we all be quick to uproot the weeds of unforgiveness in our own lives!
Overall, despite its predictability, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian suspense that is uplifting and light on adrenaline.

Another great story by Kerry Johnson. Lots of action from the 1st page. A FBI agent Eli Buchanan has lost his wife and is raising his young daughter, Skyler alone. Some one is shooting at Eli and his daughter as they are on vacation not far from his childhood home town. Eli is trying to protect his daughter as they jump from the boat and crawl upon a tiny island. Molly Calhoun works as a ranger with the US Forest Service. She has come out to the island to check on some plants. She hears gunshots and stumbles up on a man and terrified young child. Offering to help them she recognizes Eli as a ex-boyfriend from way back who left and took her heart with him. Eli can’t believe Molly is their rescuer. As they escape these shooters, more continue to show up and threaten them and their family. In order to stay safe, they must join forces to keep Skyler safe. Can Molly work this close with Eli after their past or will she forgive him and stay alive?
Wow! This was my first read by Kerry Johnson it definitely will not be my last! Her writing ability made me feel like I was actually a character in the book. FBI agent Eli Buchanan came home after many years after staying away because of his strained relationship with his father. Eli lost his wife a few years ago and right now he’ll do anything to protect his precious daughter Skyler. The first person he runs into is Molly Calhoun, his high school, sweetheart. She is also the US forest service Ranger. They both happen to be on an island not knowing each other was there. Until they have to escape together and try to protect Skyler from cyber criminals who are shooting at them. If you like second chance, romance, and action that I suggest you pick this book up. Happy reading!
Talk about a book that keeps you turning the pages until late into the night, this is it. Widower Eli takes a short vacation with his little girl, Skylar to his hometown. Just one problem, there are people after Eli and they just keep coming. He runs into his ex-girlfriend, Molly, literally. This book is fast paced and doesn't slow down until the last nail-biting page. Who is after Eli and why, how many people will get hurt or killed? Will Eli ever forgive his Dad for what he did, and will Eli tell Molly why he left years ago? Along with the suspense in the book, there is faith, hope and forgiveness all in one. I'm so thankful that I received this book as a gift and looking forward to the next book in the series.
WOW! Kerry Johnson has woven a tight suspense novel that keeps your attention from the get-go! When FBI agent Eli Buchanan sets out on a vacation with his daughter Skylar in the Allegheny Forest, he doesn't expect to be shot at and on the run. And run he does - right into his ex-girlfriend - Molly Calhoun, a botanist for the Forest Service. Now the three of them are entangled in a situation of cat and mouse with the infamous cybercrime criminal. Can they put aside their past differences and work to keep Skylar safe and figure out who wants them dead? This intriguing suspense novel is a great start to a new series. Can't wait for the next one!
Kerry Johnson has hit it out of the forest in the first book of her Forest Ranger Rescuers series. Grace and forgiveness are intertwined with her page-turning suspense. Weighing in at just over 200 pages, HUNTED IN THE FOREST is jam packed not only with action and intrigue but also with humanity and reality of complex relationships. There’s a whole lot more going on with Eli, the hero, than running from the bad guys, protecting his little daughter, and renewing acquaintance with a former girlfriend! His pain is real and relatable. Don’t miss your opportunity to meet Kerry Johnson’s characters!
Plenty of suspense and many questions to be answered. FBI agent Eli Buchanan returns to his hometown with his five year old daughter for a short vacation after finding something on the computer that has him wondering if their is someone in his office that can’t be trusted. When his vacation is suddenly becoming a nightmare, his high school sweetheart Molly Calhoun ends up in the right place, at the right time , but can she get over her heartbreak from years ago. This book is so good, learning to forgive, trust, second chances and making the wrongs, right after many years. Family and God will be there , if you will open your heart and accept the past and move on.
I really enjoyed this suspenseful book by Kerry Johnson. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved reading about Eli, Molly, Skylar, and the other people who make up this small town. I stayed up late several nights trying to figure out the whodunit and the why. I also love how this book centers on forgiveness of a lot of the characters. I struggle with this & it really captured the pros & cons of asking for forgiveness. Really only the pros. Forgiveness is hard, but with God all things are possible. I adored the epilogue. My favorite part. I cried happy tears. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I’m hopeful there will be one.
Eli Buchann is on extended leave. He is fishing on Frog Island with his daughter Skylar when they come under gunfire. With no other help, Eli is forced to turn to Molly Calhoun, his former girlfriend and now a Forest Services Ranger.
As they flee into the Pennsylvania wilderness, they are pursued by a cybercriminal. With Skylar now safe, Eli and Molly are captured and taken to an abandoned warehouse, where Eli is shocked to find a coworker he trusted has been working with the cybercriminal. Will Eli and Molly get out of this situation alive?
Hunted in the Forest, what an exciting new book!! FBI agent Eli Buchanan is supposed to be on a getaway with his 5 year old daughter when someone starts shooting at them. While trying to find cover, who should they run into but his ex-girlfriend, Molly Calhoun. Molly wasn't thrilled to run into her ex, but she wasn't about to let anyone harm that precious little girl. As they try to stay ahead of the killers, both of them keep trying to figure out who is targeting them and why. This story was a real page turner, and the ending was a total surprise.
OMG...What an amazing, well written, action and I mean action packed story. I'm kicking myself for not discovering Kerry before this first book.
Hunted in the Forest is book 1 of the new series Forest Ranger Rescuers. Right from chapter one, your sitting on the edge of your seat. Waiting for the next twist or turn depending how you feel about it. I had a hard time putting it down to deal with life. Darn it. Lol Boy was I wrong solving the mystery.
Lots of action and suspense. FBI agent Eli is on vacation with his daughter when someone takes some shots at him! What? He happens upon Forest service ranger Molly Calhoun who helps them escape the island they were stranded on. But the trouble follows them. What is going on? Who is trying to kill him and why?
If you are into books about crime, cybercrimes, and someone trying to keep their family safe with someone chasing them, this book is for you. It is intriguing and suspenseful all at the same time. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, but also, it will keep you wondering what will happen next. I encourage you to read it.
Kerry Johnson’s books always have me on the edge of my seat, but I especially liked the second-chance romance that unfolded in the quieter moments of this one. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!
