Fairly comprehensive, but left something to be desired. It's understandable that every tree is different, but too many questions were answered with "it depends" or "that's based on personal preference."
I would have liked more specific instructions and examples—wiring, for example, is probably one of the most foreign concepts to beginners, and that chapter was short and without pictures.
I know it's a tough line to walk, but I also think we need to be realistic. Most readers won't be buying a root hook. I'd probably use an Allen wrench for the task, but maybe the author has too much respect for the ancient art form to recommend that.
The reader will certainly have to do research beyond this book because of the frequent "it depends" answers, but it's a decent enough beginner's guide.
I really like the look of bonsais so I was curious to learn more about it. For anyone who is a complete beginner to bonsai like I am (or even if you have already dabbled in it), this book is a good resource. It simplifies the process in a way that makes you feel confident. The step-by-step instructions are clear and approachable, covering everything from selecting the right tree to pruning techniques for that perfect look. What I liked most is how the author also emphasizes the meditative and calming aspects of bonsai. The advice on proper watering, light conditions, and seasonal care ensures that you can nurture your bonsai year-round, without feeling overwhelmed. The troubleshooting tips for common issues are also helpful, especially for beginners who might worry about making mistakes. The guide even includes information on beginner-friendly tree species. I think that for anyone looking to start a hobby that blends creativity, mindfulness, and nature, this book is something that is worth looking into. It is practical, well-organized, and designed to help you enjoy the process rather than stress about it.
If only this book had been available when I was in my twenties because, although I love Bonsai trees, I know very little about them. I know they’re a vital part of Japanese history and culture and the beauty of them is good for the spirit. As for growing, or even caring for one, I haven’t a clue. ‘The Only Bonsai Book You’ll Ever need’ by B. Mane is a very detailed book on everything Bonsai. It delves into the history, the different types and how to become a bonsai owner. The author includes everything you need to know, from the tools you’ll need for pruning and shaping, the types of suitable trees, the soil and fertiliser requirements, environmental considerations, and even suitable containers. The process of growing them, especially from a seed or a seedling, takes many years—which is why I wish this book had been available forty years ago! But if you have patience, you can do it and this book will help you achieve your dream of growing your own beautiful bonsai tree.
My husband gave me a bonsai tree while I was in hospital last year as I'm not much of a flower girl. After some trial and error, I seem to have gotten the watering and light levels right and now it is thriving, but I've been too worried to prune it, let alone mess with the wires!
This book is a helpful guide in an easy-to-read format and has given me the confidence to make a start, but as a real beginner, I would have liked some how-to pictures, even though reading on a kindle the pictures aren't great quality anyway. Once the book got past the halfway mark, I found it becoming a bit repetitive, although, if you want to use it as a reference and flick to the most relevant chapter, that is probably a useful thing.
The Only Bonsai Book You'll Ever Need: From Beginner Techniques to Artistic Mastery Step-by-Step Miniature Tree Care is truly an outstanding guide for anyone interested in the art of bonsai. Whether you're just starting or have been working with these beautiful miniature trees for years, this book delivers comprehensive, easy-to-follow instructions that make it accessible to all.
The step-by-step approach breaks down each technique with clear illustrations, making the process of caring for and shaping bonsai trees both understandable and enjoyable. The attention to detail on everything from watering schedules to pruning techniques ensures that even beginners can develop confidence and skill quickly.
One of the standout features of this book is how it bridges the gap between basic care and more advanced, artistic aspects of bonsai creation. It not only covers practical tips on tree health but also dives into the aesthetics of creating living art. The insights into various bonsai styles, tools, and species selection are invaluable for those looking to take their skills to the next level.
Overall, _The Only Bonsai Book You'll Ever Need_ lives up to its name. It's a must-have for any bonsai lover's collection, offering something for everyone, from hobbyists to seasoned artists. Five stars!
The art of growing miniature trees in containers not only results in a work of art but is a great hobby and an exercise in mindfulness. It requires patience and attention to detail. While the practice is widely thought to come from Japan, the author points out that it had its origins in Ancient China. The book describes different styles of bonsai. The philosophy of the practice is explained, together with how to nurture and care for your plants. While beginners are advised to start with Chinese Elm or Juniper as they are reasonably easy to care for, you have to wade through the information, some of it repeated, to get clear instructions. Half-way through the book, there is a plea for readers to leave reviews. If you are beginning a hobby, you don’t want to have too many choices, but rather have a clear starting point, with step-by-step instructions, and then move on to more complicated tasks. It takes a lot of time to grow and care for your trees, but it is worth the effort.
I learned the hard way that Bonsai are NOT easy to look after!
When I was gifted a bonsai plant recently, I knew I would need help and guidance with keeping it alive and heathy. I came across this book and it covers all the essential tips a beginner needs. It’s simple to read and follow and think is it exactly what I am looking for.
Hopefully no more accidentally killing bonsai in my house!
The author provides great information regarding different types of bonsai, seed germination, styles, containers, fertilizer, watering, light sources, pest control, et cetera. The biggest benefit I gained from the book was understanding the overall commitment required to maintain a Bonsai tree. The process is significantly more involved than the care requirements for other plants. This is a great book for beginners to build that understanding.
I have been interested in trying to create a bonsai and this book was really useful in introducing me to the world of bonsai, the types of bonsai trees and their suited environments, and a host of other information about caring for bonsai trees. I highly recommend this book.
Lots of good information in here for me, the Bonsai beginner. It will give me more confidence to actively take care of my Bonsai. I had hoped for more advice on how to prune, which is the element I find most daunting but there is enough good stuff in the book for me to be getting on with.
As the title states, this is the only book you’ll need to start your bonsai adventure. It is thorough and clearly well-researched. I can’t wait to find my first sapling!
If you are looking into starting bonsai trees, this book is for you! It covers the different types of bonsai, growing tips and considerations, and ways to help ensure success! I now feel more confident in my green thumb abilities!
If you're looking to delve into the art of tiny trees this is it - a fantastic resource whether you're just starting out or have some experience. I found the illustrations helpful. If you want to get Bonsaing this book is definitely worth a read.
The title of this book is so very accurate. It truly does cover every thing listed. The information is well organized, straight forward, and easy to follow. I’ve often walked by the beautiful Bonsai plants in a garden center but was too over whelmed to purchase one. This book has changed all of that for me. I’m excited to get started with a new hobby!
Thank you for this super useful book. Really enjoyed the history section and the different species. I'm now inspired to try to grow one with exposed roots !
