In a tale of passion and sacrifice, Peter and Faye discover that sometimes even death may yield to the power of love.

In the realm between life and death, Grim Reaper Peter Matherson dutifully guides souls to their rest. However, when he’s ordered to return to his hometown of Foxford and claim the soul of a young woman from his past, his job doesn’t seem quite so simple. How can he strike a balance between following orders and following his heart?

For Faye Parker, a talented baker trapped in an unhappy and controlling marriage, the only place she can regain some independence is the kitchen. In the end, it’s a new and unexpected friendship that gives her the confidence to start life anew – she just never anticipated that Peter would play such a vital role in her journey of self-discovery. As their friendship blossoms, love starts to take root.

With his deadline closing in, Peter must choose: save his love, or succumb to duty. Defying death may save her, but his punishment would mean never seeing her again, and an eternity in the darkness of purgatory. Is sacrificing his soul worth saving hers?

This was such a great read! I really enjoyed being back in Foxford, especially after rereading the first book. Everything felt so familiar and easy to fall into again.

I already loved the MMC going into this, and getting to see more of him here — especially his protective side — definitely didn’t disappoint. Though I have to say, the parallel between his past and present was kind of heartbreaking to read. I also ended up really liking the FMC and her journey. It was really nice seeing her take control of her life after everything she’d been through and decide that only she can write her own story.

The story itself was really enjoyable and had such cozy vibes. I figured out the ending pretty early on, which took away a little bit of the tension for me, but there were still moments where I was genuinely surprised by the turn of events, which is always a pleasant experience as a reader.

That said, I still had a great time reading it. It was fun, comforting, and exactly the kind of story I was in the mood for. Overall, a solid 4-star read. I’m going to go bake now.

This book broke me in the best way possible. 5 chocolate cupcakes!!!

I’m a huge fan of Kate Callaghan, and she did not disappoint with this one. I absolutely loved everything from the characters to the plot, from the mini dragons to the baking, it was perfect.

In this novel we’ll follow Faye, someone with no magic who is married to an abusive vampire (please see books trigger warnings). She finally gets away and is building a life as a baker at her cafe, when Peter (a Reaper) starts hanging around. They’ve liked each other since they were teenagers, and Peter will do everything in his power to keep her safe.

Peter was such a protector. He would do anything for Faye, from helping her bake, taking revenge on her ex, and much more. I love him and need a Peter in my life.

Faye is so strong. Truly, she is the strongest FMC I’ve ever read. Her heart is so big, and you can see the love she has for all her friends.

I will say, grab your tissues because you will need them. I cried so hard at one point I had to out the book down and just let it out. The scene with Scarlett crying completely broke me as I pictured my mini panther doing the same if that happened to me. It hurt so much. Bravo.

I also wanted to thank Callaghan for covering such a sensitive topic in such a such a precise way. I loved her trigger warning message and the links for those in need of help. Thanks for being a caring author. You’re amazing!

4 stars for me.

Faye Parker just trying to survive her abusive vampire boyfriend before he sucks her dry.Leaving him will not be easy, but staying meant only more pain.Good thing she have great friends, and there's a certain grim reaper Peter Matherson who whith time feel more then a friend.Their relationship is forbbiden, but will those two stay away from each other?

It was a really sweet paranormal romance.Faye really gone through some hard times and I was rooting for her to find her freedom and happiness.I was surprised about Peter,I always though that grim reaper will be tough, but he was so sweet and protective, just what Faye needed. Both as friends and a couple was a pleasure to read,I really was hoping for happy ending. Now I need to read first book as I want to know more about Peter's brother.A enjoyable read that left me satisfied.

Please read warnings first.

I am so happy to be back in the Village of Foxford, and Kate exceeded my expectations with this one. I loved Potions& Proposals, book one in the series, but Don't Go Baking My Heart has become my favourite. I came for the magical small town bakery vibes… and stayed for the heartbreak, healing, and a romance that made my chest ache in the best way. Foxford is officially on my “I wish I could live here” list. Full of magic, found family, and the kind of warmth that seeps into your bones.

Faye’s journey is beautiful, raw, and so real. Watching her choose herself and slowly rebuild her life had me emotional the entire time. And then there’s Peter. A Grim Reaper has no business being that soft, that loyal, that painfully devoted. Their love story is tender, a little forbidden, and full of that yearning that just lingers with you. Add in a tiny dragon (Scarlett is my new spirit animal) and the cosiest atmosphere ever, and I was completely obsessed. And yes, I craved sweets the entire time i read.

First and foremost, happy publication day! I’m so happy to be back in the Village of Foxford with these teenage friends-to-lovers couple. In the second book that I have read by Kate Callaghan, her writing is always delightful and evokes feelings. And not to mention the wonderful art cover that always instantly captures attention at first sight.

I read this book without much expectation but to find a cozy, whimsical, and funny romance story. But this is utterly heartbreaking what do you mean? Witnessing their own growth and the ups and downs of their relationship shakes my heart. Faye is an embodiment of strength after all. She really has incredible character growth. It makes her unforgettable and relatable at the same time. The small-town setting adds a layer of coziness and hopefulness amidst the agonizing circumstances Faye must endure.

What an interesting twist in this well-thought-out magical world! Peter is a reaper, but can still have contact with his loved ones, can take corporeal form, and age as if he were still alive. It makes the bond created between the two of them more heartfelt and meaningful.

At times the pacing slowed down, but the last quarter of the book was especially good! I’ll admit, it was more emotional than I was expecting, but their ending is very bittersweet and heartfelt. Be prepared for needing a tissue and tugging at your heartstrings til the last few pages!

This one had a lot more depth than I was expecting going in. Beneath the cosy, slightly witchy/paranormal vibes, there are some genuinely hard-hitting themes woven through the story. It definitely had moments that should have made me cry… and probably would have if I didn’t have a heart of stone 😅

At its core, this is such a lovely story about friendship, family, and finding your own sense of freedom. I really connected with those elements, and they gave the book a warmth that balanced out the heavier moments really well.

Also - I am always here for a good paranormal, witchy theme, and this delivered just enough magic to keep things interesting without overpowering the story.

Overall, a really enjoyable read with more emotional depth than expected. I’ll definitely be picking up more of Kate Callaghan’s books!

Kate, respectfully... WTF WAS THAT???
God I haven't cried like this in a long time. Sobbing at 1am and feeling like I was gonna lose my eyes. Jesus....

But do you all know what was the saddest part of it? That Faye destiny is the same as many women out there. This. This was the main reason for my breakdown. Even if it's in a magic world. With silly characters. In the real world, this is REAL. With REAL people.

This was a hell of a journey. You start this book with 0 expectations because is full of magic, witches, dead people and vampires (I sound crazy AF but I swear this book is amazing with all of these creatures).
Then you enter into the story and realize were this will go. You prepare your heart and continue.
But when it comes ... Oh when it comes I swear YOU ARE SO NOT READY FOR IT. This breaks your heart and soul in so many little pieces.

This was beautifully strange. Can't explain. The only thing is that it took me a while to get into the atmosphere of the book.

Faye was such a strong and amazing woman. With her own business. With a smile from ear to ear. But she lived for ten years in an abusive relationship. The right time and the right people gave her the strength to put herself first and run away.

And one of them was Peter. A crush from the old times. A friend. A dead friend. Who can't fall for her. Who can't have her for so many reasons and laws. Peter was such a protector of her. Broke all the rules to be with her.

The way they developed their relationship knowing that their destiny was already written was heartbreaking. You know whats going to happen but still... You cry for Faye. You cry for Peter and you SOBB for Scarlett.

They know that they were the definition of "the right person in the wrong time". But they also know that they were destined for each other.

This is a book full of love, friendship and strength. It's about asking for help and support. Faye and Peter's story was tragically beautiful. And I can't wait for all of you to read it 🤍

I have to start by giving a huge shout-out to Kate Callaghan for not only writing this book with such powerful topics (check TWs before reading) but also for writing them so eloquently. Faye is my favorite FMC of the new year!
Thank you, Kate, for giving me the chance to read Fay and Peter's beautiful love story in Don't Go Baking My Heart.
Anyone who reads this book had better have tissues and preferably your emotional support person near you while reading this book.

The short, easy to read chapters made this book a captivating read.

The characters are all relatable (with the exception of paranormal beings) and lovable.
Peter may be a Grim Reaper, but he's such a sweetheart and has the biggest heart, even when he's being overprotective.
Rosie, she's such a good friend to Faye, and I'm hoping to maybe get a love story for her and Emerson.
I won't say too much about Ben & Lucy because they have their own story in Potions and Proposals, but I will say that their love has grown deeper since being married.
Can we talk about Scarlett (Scar) ? I love how fiercely protective this little red dragonia is of Faye. I hope she is taken well care of after this story ends.

I absolutely love the Village of Foxford and all it's inhabitants and I hope to see more from them in the future.

Don't Go Baking My Heart is my new favorite Kate Callaghan book!

“You could never scare or freak me out. No matter what form you take. You forget I’ve seen real evil. In fact, you’re the one thing in my life that doesn’t scare me. I know what that says about me - being in death’s company comforts me - but it’s true.”

We revisit the Village of Foxford to follow the tragic and forbidden love story of Peter Matherson, the friendly neighborhood Grim Reaper. Peter has been assigned a reaping to the one person in town he could never stay away from, Faye Parker, new owner of Stoker’s Bakery.

Now Peter must decide between following the rules and reaping Faye’s soul when her time comes, or break every rule possible in the sheer hope a miracle changes her fate. If he chooses to risk it all, he may just risk his own soul in return.

“You can’t bargain with or trick death.”

Going into Don’t Go Baking My Heart I knew it would not be all happy and fun laughs like Lucy and Benedict’s story was in Potions and Proposals. Faye is coming out of a long-term relationship at the beginning of the book that was very abusive (physically and mentally), so if domestic abuse and the lingering trauma afterwards is a trigger for you please take breaks if the story becomes to much for you, if you would still like to read the book.

While I have never experienced an abusive relationship, nor the trauma that occurs during and afterwards, I do have to applaud Kate Callaghan for including all of the information and research she found while writing Faye’s story at the beginning of the book. There she talks about some of the domestic violence statistics she found while writing Faye’s story, which all plays a overarching role to the plot and highlights a need in our society to support and protect domestic violence victims better.

“He couldn’t give her the rest of his life, but he could at least make her dreams come true for what little time they had together.”

Peter was a sweetheart, which he already was when he was introduced in Lucy and Benedict’s book, however, while reading from his POV we get a better sense of what he is like as a character. We watch as both him and Faye begin as friends and gradually turn to lovers over the course of the book. However, since this is a forbidden love story, their love is not smooth sailing especially with Faye’s reaping day creeping closure bit by bit.

“Then again, how many of us ever get to say goodbye when it really matters? She was right, though. I can leave when I want and on my terms.”

The ending, oh god, the ending of this book had me nearly to tears. Literally those last 5 chapters killed me. Both Faye and Peter doing everything they can to try to protect each other, but only one of them can be saved in the end.

Overall, if you like to read cozy fantasy romances, or where the grim reaper (or death) falls for a mortal, this is the book for you and I highly recommend it! Just be prepared for Kate to have you crying at the end of this book.

“Then let’s start fresh, just the two of us.”
“A new chapter.”
“Our chapter!”

“No matter what form you take, you forget I’ve seen real evil. In fact, you’re the one thing in my life that doesn’t scare me. I know what that says about me - being in death’s company comforts me - but it’s true” 🖤

First off, thank you so much to Kate Callaghan, and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this book.

I loved this one. I actually think it’s going to hold a special place in my heart. Even though it deals with some really intense, and emotional themes (TW, domestic abuse, panic attacks, therapy/medication) it was so well done, and shows such honour in asking for help when it’s needed, that it’s a story about strength more than struggle.

Scarlett the mini dragon stole my heart, for reasons you’ll come to see. But our FMC, Faye, she’s in a violent situation at home with her vampire husband, and the couple have been exiled eccentrically from Foxford where they grew up. He’s an abusive arsehole, but she’s made the courageous decision to leave him, moving into the apartment above her bakery. She’s the embodiment of strength in this book, even being a non-magical being in a village of entirely magical beings, including her friends. She’s caring, and considerate, sometimes at her own detriment because she doesn’t want to endanger other people asking for help, but what she doesn’t realise is helping her isn’t a choice for them, because they care.

The MMC, Peter, is complex, and protective and touching in a way that hit me harder than I thought it would. He’s a grim reaper, sentenced to gather souls after he died as a teenager practicing dark magic, trying to bring his father back from the dead. He’s been friends with Faye since their childhood, and when she appears on his collections list he tries his hardest to outwit death and make sure she can stick around to enjoy her new found freedom in life.

This story is so complex and layered, but is such a sweet paranormal romance at the same time. It’s so much more than I expected, and it really hit home for me at times, there are so many elements I can relate to with a lot of the characters. I had such a good time reading this. And the cover, just gives me all the 90’s whimsical magic nostalgia which is oddly perfect for the story!

Thank you again to Kate Callaghan and NetGalley to trusting me with an ARC copy of this book.

Peter is a Grim Reaper and his hometown is his jurisdiction. Unfortunately, the next soul he has to collect is that of Faye, a talented baker in Foxford he cares for. She is trying to leave an abusive marriage and Peter's friendship is the support she didn't know she needed. As their relationship takes a romantic turn, the collection date looms, and Peter must decide if he will save her, which means condemning his soul to darkness.

Callaghan's wonderful flair for the whimsical is on display here and her undeniable talent for creating inviting magical worlds. This installment evolves Foxford and its lore, and I really enjoyed learning about reapers and the surprising things they can do. I always feel comfortable in Callaghan's stories, and as expected, there are frequent warm & fuzzies. In the bittersweet melancholy that colors it, there were also sobs and a lot of smiling, occasionally at the same time. Honest & intimate, the author has done well with the joyful weaving of the story threads, including the prickly existence of the awaited suspense and feeling of foreboding of course.

From Faye's first chapter you want to protect her, but she has guts, even in her dire circumstance. I love Peter's playful demeanor, kind soul and how he made me laugh. It is an impossible situation and his not being able to tell her the truth makes it even more difficult. The quick-witted retorts between them is all the money, as is the general banter between different characters that makes you want to chuckle.

Side characters that you will adore and some you will recognize if you have read the first Foxford book. Don't worry the writer does not let the first time visitors to this enchanting place feel left out. Also the addition of the adorable Scarlett was genius, absolute cuteness overload. I must mention here that this book contains probably the most comical recipe I have seen in print.

Faye's situation is treated with the respect needed and the character is embraced with care and no judgment. This tale reminds us that family is loyalty, not blood. It deals with grief and how it is different for everyone. It is about altering destiny and it shows us how much good a person can do to change your life perspective.

I wanted to hug the book, scream at it and cry, that is how much this extraordinary story made me care. Kate Callaghan, this is your best one yet and worth all the emotional turmoil and the blubbering at the end.

This book felt like the perfect mix of the magical secrecy of Harry Potter’s hidden alleys, the supernatural drama of The Vampire Diaries, and the dark fantasy charm of Lucifer. I loved every bit of it.

One of the highlights of the story for me was Faye’s character growth. Watching her journey unfold was incredibly satisfying and emotional at the same time. The plotline itself feels very unique, and the small-town setting adds such cozy vibes that make the story even more enjoyable.

This book was also quite different from my usual reads, but I absolutely devoured it. Honestly, I wanted to devour the bakery recipes mentioned in the story just as much as I devoured the book.

The writing style is vivid and picturesque, making it very easy to imagine the world and feel immersed in the setting. I also appreciated how thoughtfully the author included themes of mental health, which added an important layer of emotional depth to the story.

Fans of supernatural stories will especially enjoy the fascinating twist involving grim reapers and their organized “office” system. It’s such a creative concept and adds a fun, intriguing element to the worldbuilding. I can definitely see fans of The Vampire Diaries loving this one.

Keeping this review spoiler-free, here’s a quick glimpse of the premise:

Faye is a human married to a vampire she once believed was the love of her life, only to later realize that the relationship is abusive. Peter, a grim reaper who grew up alongside Faye before he died, is assigned the mission of collecting her soul. What should be a simple task becomes complicated by one important detail — Peter has secretly loved Faye since his teenage years. Love between the living and the dead is forbidden. Choosing love will destroy Peter’s soul, but completing the mission will take Faye’s life.

Alongside the supernatural tension, the story is also filled with beautiful friendships, healing, and the comforting presence of a cozy bakery in a charming small-town setting.

Overall, this was a unique and engaging read with strong character growth, creative supernatural elements, and cozy small-town vibes. I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy paranormal romance with emotional depth.

This book opens with a note, and in it the author shares, “On average a woman will leave an abusive relationship 7 times before she’s able to leave for good. Even more frightening is that an estimated 75% of women are killed by their abuser when they try to leave or shortly after leaving.” This statistic is sobering and heartbreaking. If you or someone you love is in an abusive relationship the (American) National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 800-799-7233, you can also text BEGIN to 88788, and their website is thehotline.org

In this sequel we return to the town of Foxford, a sanctuary city where magical and the magicless (or magless) live in harmony under the town’s witch coven. We get a closer look at Faye, a magless baker who married her highschool sweetheart vampire, Ian. After 2 years of bliss has come 10 years of pain, hardship and trauma. With planning to leave an abusive marriage she embraces life once again, returning to old friendships, and discovering love she didn’t think would ever find her. Things are not always so easy, and even the strongest protections may not be enough. Faye must decide between fate and choosing your own destiny.

I enjoyed this book immensely, though I will say having read book #1 Potions and Proposals did not prepare me for the emotional roller coaster this book would take me on. Where P&P was a fun, witchy, rom-com type novel (highly recommend), this book delves so much deeper.

There are many sweet, funny, heart warming, and uplifting moments. We see fun recipes, baking competitions, and lots and lots of coffee! Plus the sweetest little fiery Dragnonia. However, the author did not shy away from the dark realities of escaping abuse. We not only see the uncertainty Faye feels by choosing this path, but the aftermath. Struggling with anxiety and paranoia, medication and therapy, hoping no one will look close enough to see your pain, the relief of escape coupled with the fear of losing everything again- of never truly escaping. How do you trust anyone when your life has been nothing but control and manipulation by the one you love most in the world? How do you find love and intimacy, when it was used to break you down? Callaghan treated these characters and situations with great care and responsibility. I do not cry often in reading books, but in this one I cried twice; once with joy and once with heartbreak.

This book also deals greatly with loss, as we dive deeper into Peter’s story as a Grim Reaper. Having died at only 16 years old, his punishment in death is to collect 10,000 souls. Grim Reapers in this world are a kind comfort, giving souls peace and escorting them to what lies beyond, restoring their body and consoling them in the last moments of life. I enjoyed this aspect, not as beings that destroy but beings that guide. His domain is Foxford, allowing him to return home for occasional visits, and to remain in his family’s life. However, there are still rules in never falling in love with a living, and not interfering in their deaths.

We see from different angles the grief that holds him and his family in place together, allowing him to visit but never allowed to be truly with them again, but wouldn’t you accept that to hold on to those you love for just a little while longer? The pain and healing of loss, scared that one day may be the final moment together, but knowing that death comes for us all eventually. Can we avoid it, delay it, escape it? If you knew the person you love most was on a time limit, would you make their last days the best, would you try to divert the course?

This book reminds us to live, to love, and to embrace the control of our own destiny.

Number of Times I Wanted to Throw the Book Across the Room: At least 5.

Did the Book Pass the “One More Chapter” Test?: Read it in 1 day, I couldn’t put it down.

Number of Emotional Roller Coasters: Too many to count.

Perfect snack pairing: A latte, and pumpkin pie

Character I Would Most Like to Have a Drink With: Grams, I know she has a million stories to tell.

Quote that perfectly sums up the main characters relationship: “Then we should make this moment last. Today, right now, you and me- it’s all that matters.”

Level of spice: 3/5 there’s lead up, but closed door.

Unique bits I love: I have so enjoyed the worldbuilding Callaghan does in these books, the take on a whimsical and magical world that still feels grounded. The Grim Reaper life is fascinating!

“After years of trying to make it their home, it felt like all she had done was decorate her cage.”

Welcome back, my sweet, awful creatures! 🦇

Kate Callaghan came out with a new book and sent me an ARC copy, so of course I HAD to read it! I have not read the previous books in this series, BUT it did not ruin it for me at all! Faye's and Peter's story was so tragic that I could not put it down. Let me elaborate!

The story is about Faye, a young woman whose life turned into a nightmare ever since she fled with her vampire lover into a strange town. He promised her everything: love, a family, and peace, but none of those things actually happened. She was stuck with him as his personal blood bank. Her friend, Peter, who had died in an accident when they were children and lives his now-dead life as a reaper on the other side of life, finds out that she would die soon… The girl he once loved more than anything shouldn't die so soon before she could even live her life thoroughly. So Peter comes up with a plan… He'd find her and fix whatever in her life would bring her to the brink of death, even if that meant he’d put himself in trouble with the other side.

I have read three books by this author, and every single one so far has been a delight! But this one specifically had a stronger storyline. By that I mean this story explores abusive relationships, manipulation, and isolation, which are subjects that can be overdone or lack accuracy. In my opinion, Kate has done a great job here! The way Ian abuses her is so manipulative that even I as the reader felt sympathy for him whenever he would shower her with love and affection. I also enjoyed the portrayal of vampirism, or in this case, how Ian chose to feed on her even though he could have easily gotten supplies from the blood bank open for vampires. He enjoyed hurting her. A perfect portrayal of both sides of abuse.

Faye and Peter were adorable together! Faye's hesitation to trust Peter felt so realistic considering her past and state; I appreciated the slow burn trope for this reason. It would have been unrealistic if they jumped on each other after two chapters. Their friendship/relationship throughout the story felt nostalgic, sweet, and warm; that is the most accurate way I can explain it. There isn’t any superficial sexual passion or lust; it is about two people that care for each other enough to be ready to sacrifice whatever stands between them. Heartwarming.

My only issue was the pace of the story… I feel it could have been a little shorter, and towards the end it felt like it was dragging on; especially the baking competition felt unnecessary to me as I was so focused on what was going to happen to Faye. That’s probably a personal thing because I don’t like side plots.

Overall it was exciting, cute, and romantic! A solid romance for moments where you want to escape from your world.

Until next time!

Mira 💗

He wants to protect her from Ian, even if it gets him in more trouble in purgatory.

👩🏾 Heroine: Faye Parker -26, owns the Stoker's cafe, a pastry chef. Joins Raventown's pastry competition.

*Gwendoline Matherson- Peter and Benedict's mother
*Rosie-Faye's werewolf BFF
*The Order-a secret section of the Vatican, keeps law between magless and magical
*Scarlet-a baby dragon Faye bonds with

🤔 My Thoughts: I loved the serious tone of this novel. Faye was in an abusive marriage, but she came out of it with help from her friends and a therapist. She went through a lot because of her teen lover turned husband Ian. She had the hidden scars, the forced feedings, and PTSD. Peter was protective and caring, always keeping an eye on her even if he got in trouble for it. Faye had the whole village as support from her BFF Lucy to a little, red-bearded dragon. It ended with a HEA, and I can't wait for the next book.

Rating: 5/5 ✨
Spice level: 2/5 🌶️ kissing, fade to black

Peter Matheson has accepted his role as a Grim Reaper since his death at 16 years old. Now, he is assigned to collect souls in his hometown, the magical haven of Foxford. Peter's latest assignment however, is to collect the soul of Faye Parker, a high school friend. Faye is married to her high school sweetheart, a vampire named Ian who uses her for feedings and mistreats her. Faye plans to leave Ian and move to an apartment above Stoker's bakery, which she runs. Peter arrives just in time to help Faye escape and set up protections around her apartment. While spending time together, Peter realizes just how much he enjoys Faye's company and decides to bend the role of a Reaper to prevent Faye's death. Faye is just happy to be away from Ian and is rebuilding the life she lost, reconnecting with lost friends and diving into her baking career. With a push from her friends and Peter, Faye accepts an invitation to compete in a baking tournament, even though she suspects that her time is running short.

"Don't Go Baking My Heart" is a paranormal romance set in the magical town of Foxford. While Peter and Faye's love story is amazingly cute, Faye's character deals with incredibly serious issues such as leaving an abusive relationship and the resulting panic attacks. While the pacing of the story was a little slow for me, I did enjoy the setting of Foxford and all of its magical inhabitants. There is a previous book written in Foxford, although I don't believe it's necessary to read them in order. The characters are also very well developed. Faye and Peter each have intense emotional arcs as they realize their emotions for one another and what that means for their unique situations: Faye is a non-magical being and Peter is a Reaper entrusted to collect her soul. I also enjoyed the supporting characters: Peter's family, a powerful coven dealing with the fact that Peter is dead but still around as a Reaper, Faye's friends; and her tiny pet dragon, Scarlet. All these elements added charm to Foxford and provided the support network Faye needed when leaving her relationship with Ian. During Faye and Peter's affectionate and enchanting love story, I almost forgot that Faye was destined to die. While the ending was not surprising, it was a perfect way for Peter and Faye to be together.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is an engaging and thoughtfully crafted story that immediately draws you in. I would like to highlight the author’s note. It sets the tone for the entire book and hooked me right away. It’s clear from the beginning that the author has paid close attention to detail and conducted meaningful research, which adds depth and credibility to the narrative.

The story follows Faye, a human without magic, as she navigates major life challenges, including leaving an abusive relationship, redefining her professional path, and embracing a second chance at love with an old friend who is now a full-time reaper. Her journey is compelling and emotional; I found myself fully invested in her growth and rooting for her throughout.

The characters are a major strength. I especially loved the MMC, Peter, who is organized, driven, and, notably, dead. His feelings for Faye are evident, and his strong instinct to protect her adds both tension and emotional weight to the story. Their dynamic is engaging and adds depth to the romance. The lighter, fun magic system and the inclusion of an animal companion further enrich the reading experience and bring warmth to the story.

The ending was particularly memorable. It was fast-paced, exciting, and genuinely unexpected. It elevated the overall experience and made the book difficult to put down.

The novel also tackles difficult topics with care and respect. The author's research is evident, and the inclusion of real-world context and statistics adds another layer of significance that readers may find informative and impactful.

A minor critique is that there are a couple of moments when the narrative leans more toward direct exposition than to seamlessly integrating information into the story. These instances felt slightly like "info-dumping" and disrupted the flow momentarily.

Overall, this is a unique and well-executed story that balances emotional depth, romance, and imaginative elements. It's a compelling read that evokes a range of emotions and delivers a powerful, memorable conclusion. Highly recommended.

Am, excuse ma’am? But this book should come with a box of tissues, a mega pint of ice cream and emotional support 😭💜💚

I was just so happy to start reading this book because I read two books by the author and I loved them so much and I had a creative time and laughed and I saw the cover and said, oh god this looks amazing, I read the blurb and I was a little concerned about how Faye and Peter would get their happy ending, and then, I was thrown in a roller coaster of emotions and was a complete crying mess by chapter 34 and kept ugly crying until the book finished with me, because yes, I didn’t finished the books this book finished with me and I loved it 😭💜💚

I was destroyed and then full recovered after reading Faye and Peter’s story, and the thing I loved most about them, it’s that their story isn’t just about romance and love, is about grief in many forms, grief about Peter losing his dad which lead him to lose his own life, Faye’s grief over her last 10 years with her abusive ex, Peter’s family grief about losing him and his father, and how they all have to cope with that grief and keep living their lives and con existing with those feelings.

I think this book is one of the most heart breaking and beautiful books I’ve ever read, the journey of Faye finding her life again, reconnecting with her passion about baking and her friends and chosen family after her relationship was over was beautiful, reading her finding her strength again and loving her best life was just perfect 🥹💜💚and I forever will love her

Peter oh how I love him! I get tears in my eyes every time I think about how hard he fought for keeping Faye save, how much he loved her even when he knew he couldn’t be with her because she’s alive and he’s not, how hard he protected her, even when he knew his own soul was at risk doing it and I just wanted to hold him the last 4 chapters and epilogue, him and Scarlett had my heart broken for them and even when the ending wasn’t our average happy ending, it was the perfect ending for Faye and Peter 🥹💚💜 I’m sure they’ll be happy and together for eternity and that was beyond perfect ✨

A romance that broke my heart in the best way

- I would like to thank the author for the eARC -

STANDALONE in the VILLAGE OF FOXFORD series
Peter died at sixteen, ten years ago. Since then, he has been tasked to guide souls to their rest, as a Grim Reaper. But when he learns that his next target is a young woman from his past, his life/death is turned upside down and he is determined to save her from this terrible tragedy, despite his duty. Faye, talented baker, has finally prepared her plan to escape her abusive, violent marriage with a bloodthirsty vampire. With the help of her friends and a newly reappeared figure from her past, she finds the confidence and support she needs to start over and heal. But a Grim Reaper is not meant to meddle with the living, let alone fall in love. And no one, not even death itself, can cheat fate.

This story was definitely a different vibe from Benedict and Lucy's. It dealt with deeper, more traumatic issues like death, domestic violence, anxiety and grief, but the author wrote it in a very immersive and cathartic way that deeply moved me. Faye's story was beautiful, tragic and impactful. Her trauma and experiences were not minimized, but I loved that the people who loved her were always there and respected every decision she made. Peter was also a very touching character, with an equally tragic past, and it's not often that you see a grim reaper as an actual main character, which made the story all the more intriguing. Their relationship was really sweet, beautiful and meant to be, and I did shed some tears for them both. The author really transported me into this dangerous, fantastical world with this story, and I will be back for more. The ending was beautiful and stole my heart. All in all, a unique, tragically beautiful story that did, in fact, break my heart.

I recommend if you like fantasy romance that deals with real, impactiful themes and complex characters.

I have never rooted so hard for the Grim Reaper to get the girl.

Don’t Go Baking My Heart has officially convinced me that I need to reclaim one or two of my comp days at work just to sit down and binge Kate Callaghan’s entire back catalogue. Every book she writes is filled with heart and joy and people clawing their way toward hope, laughter, and love — even when life (or death) throws every obstacle in their path.

This one?
This one is pure magic.

Faye has just moved back to her small town after leaving her vampire husband — he is literally a bloodsucker — and is trying to rebuild her life when she lands on the local Grim Reaper’s Call Sheet. What she doesn’t know is that Peter, the boy who once had a crush on her, is now the one tasked with collecting her soul. What’s a golden retriever in a cowl with a scythe supposed to do now?

I know this sounds more like a drama than a rom‑com, but trust me: there are just as many sighs as giggles, and an equal measure of gasps as snorts. It’s tender, funny, and surprisingly hopeful — the exact blend of tones that Callaghan excels at.

Written with all the charm, wit, humor, and romance I look for when I see Kate Callaghan’s name, this was a fun, easy, and original paranormal romance — the perfect companion for a pamper‑me day off work.

Foxford continues to be one of my favorite magical small towns: full of found family, quiet acts of bravery, and the kind of love that feels like a warm kitchen on a cold night.

If you love:
✨ Grim Reaper x Baker
✨ Forbidden love
✨ Best friends to lovers
✨ Found family
✨ All Hallows’ Eve vibes
✨ Magical small towns

…this series is your next cozy‑paranormal obsession.

This book reminded me why I love Kate Callaghan’s writing: she gives her characters hope even when the world has tried to take it from them. She writes love as something healing, not something that demands suffering as proof.

And honestly? I did not expect to spend my week cheering for a Grim Reaper with the emotional range of a golden retriever, but here we are — and I regret NOTHING

Gosh! I don't even know where to begin.
Maybe with the fact that I really missed this world, this wonderful village of Foxford, from this unique, extraordinary story.

The first book was really good, I really enjoyed it, but this book beats everything.
Yes, again.
What can I say?
Kate just keeps getting better and better with each book.

It's everything you could want in a dark fantasy.
The only problem is, it's not a dark fantasy.
It's a wonderful mix of sweet and sweet, paranormal, and dark fantasy.

As always, from the Queen of slow burn, a very unusual love story that starts slowly and carefully.

Kate made me laugh with this book, grin like a Cheshire cat, and even cry with this story.
This book simply has everything I need in a novel.
Kate has managed to create a blend of fantasy, thriller, romance, and rumcom that is simply irresistibly addictive.
The book is exciting, gripping, and suspenseful.

In a world of vampires, witches, werewolves, and a few other creatures, Faye, a wonderful cook and member of the Witches coven, has no special powers.
Or so she thinks.
Her strength comes primarily from within, from a heart that would die for others without batting an eye.
She's completely overwhelmed by her struggle to lead a "normal" life, yet she still thinks more about other people than herself.

And then Peter comes along.
Her teenage love crush.
Oh, I completely forgot to mention that Peter is dead. Literally.
He's the Grim Reaper, Peter Matherson, in person.

Yeah, nothing in this story is easy or a given.
Like I said, an extraordinary story.

This is the second book in the series, and I would really recommend reading book 1 first so that you can better understand the background of the story.

If you love:
💜Vampires/witches/werewolves/💚dragons
❤️Small town
❣️Friends to lovers
💕Found family
💘Forbidden romance
🥧Pastry competition
💚Forbidden Love Romance
💜Grim Reaper Meets Pastry Chef
✨He Slips Into Her Dreams
💚Second Chance At Life
💜Paranormal Romance

After Potions & Proposals, I already had my bags packed for Foxford, emotionally speaking. And this? This delivered… then casually wrecked me while smelling faintly of baked goods and heartbreak.

Peter being stuck as a Grim Reaper as punishment for trying to save his dad is already cruel enough. But making him work in his own town? That’s not just punishment, that’s cosmic pettiness. And yes, I knew he’d be assigned to Faye. I knew it in the way you know a storm is coming but still stand outside like an idiot hoping it might turn into a light drizzle.

Watching him try to fight fate was… painful in the best way. Everything he does for Faye is soaked in love, yet every choice drags him further from his own family and any chance of a normal life. The emotional maths here does not balance and my heart paid the price.

And Faye? Icon. Legend. Walking definition of survival. If resilience had a mascot, it would be her holding a whisk like a weapon. Escaping her awful pseudo marriage, finding safety with the coven, and slowly learning to want more from life felt genuinely healing to read. Then you add the baking competition, her growing independence, and the constant shadow of Peter possibly being there to collect her… it’s a full emotional rollercoaster with no safety bar.

And that ending… no spoilers, but Faye said “actually, I’ll take control of my own fate, thanks” and I have not stopped thinking about it since. Also, her handling of the bloodsucker ex? Deeply satisfying. No notes.

Final thoughts:
Cosy fantasy with a knife hidden in the sponge cake. Soft, magical, and then suddenly devastating when you least expect it.

Read it. Just… read it.

Don’t Go Baking My Heart by Kate Callaghan is a charming, feel-good romance that perfectly blends sweetness, humor, and just the right amount of emotional depth.

From the start, the cozy, bakery-centered setting completely pulled me in. There’s something so comforting about a story filled with baked goods, small-town vibes, and a close-knit community, and Callaghan brings it all to life in a way that feels warm and inviting. It’s the kind of book you want to curl up with on a quiet afternoon.

The romance is at the heart of the story, and I really enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters. Their dynamic felt natural, with a mix of playful banter and deeper emotional moments that gave their relationship substance. Watching their connection grow—while they each worked through their own personal struggles—made the story feel both engaging and heartfelt.

I also appreciated the balance between lighthearted moments and more meaningful themes. Beneath the cozy exterior, the story touches on healing, starting over, and finding the courage to open your heart again. These elements added depth without taking away from the overall uplifting tone.

The pacing was steady and easy to follow, though there were a few moments where the story felt a bit predictable. Still, the charm of the characters and setting more than made up for it, and I found myself genuinely invested in how everything would turn out.

Overall, Don’t Go Baking My Heart is a delightful and comforting read that delivers exactly what you’d hope for in a cozy romance. It’s perfect for readers who love small-town settings, sweet love stories, and a little extra warmth—both in the kitchen and in matters of the heart.

⭐️RATING: ★★★★½ (rounded up to 5 because it made me feel things)

I was worried about being lost since I haven't read the first book of the series, but that was not the case. I just got some spoilers for the first book of this interconnected standalone series, which was to be expected, and I have no issues with that. I loved this book so much that I want to read the first one even though I've already spoiled it for myself.

The love Peter and Faye have found amidst all this tragedy is beautiful. This book was such a quick and enjoyable read that I couldn't put my Kindle down. I even read some of it while I was cooking—which is a difficult feat in itself! Like I said, I just did not want to part my eyes from this story any more than I had to.

The portrayal of domestic abuse in the story was really well done. I loved witnessing Faye heal and gain her freedom, not to mention fall in love again with our dreamy grim reaper... Peter is such a green flag that you could use him as a golf course. His love for Faye was shown through every little thing he did. He is so charming—and ferocious when it comes to protecting his loved ones.

Although I like my romance on the spicier side, I didn't mind the lack of it in this book one bit.

I think people who enjoy Ali Hazelwood's contemporary romances would like this book as well. Yes, I know this is paranormal, but the relationship dynamics are paralleled. I don't mean Ali's fantasy books, though; I think the relationships in her fantasy novels are quite different from her contemporary works.

Oh, one more thing: Ready your tissues because the author DID NOT hold back on the emotions... 🤧💔 And I do wonder if trying the recipes in this book would be safe or not 👀

A cozy mystery that will have you whisking up a storm and reaching for the tissues! Don’t Go Baking My Heart is the highly anticipated second installment in the Village of Foxford series, and it is every bit as magical, emotional, and pun-filled as we hoped.
I’m giving this a 4.5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley, the publisher, and Kate Callaghan. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this ARC! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Review:
I absolutely loved Book 1, and I am so happy to report that Book 2 doesn't disappoint! The love story between Faye and Peter is just amazing—it’s the kind of connection that transcends boundaries (and lifetimes). Faye is a fantastic, resilient FMC, and Peter is an adorable, endearing hero who deserves all the good in the world and the afterlife! Be warned: I found myself bawling my eyes out at a certain point in the story, but the ending was exactly what my heart needed.
The Good:
The emotional depth in this sequel is incredible. The way Kate Callaghan balances the whimsical "cosy" vibes with genuine, tear-jerking stakes is masterful. The puns are top-tier, the village setting of Foxford feels like home, and the character growth for both Faye and Peter is beautiful to witness.
The Not-So-Good:
The "bawling my eyes out" moment was intense. While the payoff is worth it, there was a point toward the end where the angst felt very heavy for a "cozy" read. I also found myself wishing for just a few more scenes of Faye's actual baking process because the treats sounded delicious

Aghh this hurts to write, but unfortunately what was one of my most anticipated reads of 2026 ended up being a DNF at 50%.

I wanted to love this soooo badly and I tried so hard to give it time but for whatever reason I just couldn't connect with it. Considering reviews so far have all been great I'm really hoping this is more of a me problem and not the book because I really do adore Kate and her work.

From the second they were introduced in Potions & Proposals I absolutely adored both Faye and Peter, they were literally my ideal FMC and MMC. I really loved both of them. I think I just struggled to feel their connection in this book. I think because their connection felt so established straight away it kind of felt like I was being told they had a romantic connection instead of shown. I think that was the biggest issue I had with the book, I just really struggled to FEEL what was happening.

The same thing happened with Faye and her abusive husband, Ian. I was so ready for the emotional impact of this story but it just didn't come. As I said earlier, this could very well just be a me problem. I also think that maybe it would of had more of an emotional impact if it had been written in first person so that we were truly living out Faye's perspective. I don't know.

I might go back to this book in the future and give it another try just to make sure that it wasn't a "right book, wrong time" situation but these are my thoughts on it for now.

A huge thank you to Kate Callaghan for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. I'm truly so sad that I wasn't able to give a more positive one.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, so I just knew Don't Go Baking My Heart would be fabulous, too! In this one, a baker escaping an abusive marriage finds herself falling for the Grim Reaper assigned to collect her soul, and he has to decide if saving her is worth losing everything.

On the surface, it has all the cozy things: small-town magic, a bakery, found family, even a tiny dragon, but underneath that, this story is emotional. Faye’s character arc is the heart of everything, and it’s not an easy one. Seeing her leave an abusive relationship and try to rebuild her life was one I can relate to, especially the fear and the slow process of trusting again. The difficulties weren't rushed or brushed over, which made me feel seen and I really appreciated that. Peter completely got me. He’s a Grim Reaper, but not in a scary way. He's more quiet and protective, and just there for her in all the ways that matter. The fact that he’s loved her for so long and still chooses her, even when it could cost him everything, hurt in the best way. Their whole relationship oozes this feeling that they shouldn't try being together, but they do it anyway. I also loved the side characters- especially Scarlett! Foxford actually feels like a place you could step into because of them, and the found family aspect really stands out.

This book does that mix of cozy and emotional really well. It made me smile, and then completely wrecked me a few chapters later. It’s a romance about healing, grief, and figuring out how to move forward. This one stuck with me more than I expected with its emotional, comforting, and little bit of devastation. I highly recommend this one!

"In the realm between life and death, Grim Reaper Peter Matherson dutifully guides souls to their rest. In the end, it’s a new and unexpected friendship that gives her the confidence to start life anew – she just never anticipated that Peter would play such a vital role in her journey of self-discovery."

WOW! Okay I seriously loved this book so much. While it is book two in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone, which is what it was for me as I haven't read the first one.
From the beginning, I loved Faye and all of her family/friends that are around her because you can tell they truly love her and care about her and her well-being. See how awful Ian treated her was obvi a huge red flag 🚩and a big ICK 🤮 as the kids would say these days. & Peter....just absolutely swoon! Even with him being a Grim Reaper, I mean COME ON!
Faye went through a lot in her life & I am so glad that Peter was there for her along with her other family & friends too. She is probably one of the strongest FMC I have read about in awhile. 💪🏽

There are Trigger Warnings at the beginning of the book, so that is something to be aware of going into this. Thank you Kate Callaghan, NetGalley, and the publisher for my copy of this ARC. All opinions are my own and my review reflects as such! 🍰👩🏽‍🍳🧁
