I had to sit on this for a day before reviewing. I really want to give more stars because I did like this book!!! But.... as a whole and at the end, it fell flat.

Yes read the trigger warnings but even after I did so.... I expected way more from this. Multiple forgettable characters, little growth, small amount of depth. I didn't see anything the blurb made me want and I didn't see anything showing the trigger warnings until 62% and even that was one page. Nothing more until 67% and that was only one of the trigger warnings. The rest of the book was drug out and rushed at the same time.

Warning that there are medical field references that are not accurate. And there are mentions of witchcraft even tho MMC is aware they're vampires. Both things made me twitch but I could move past rather well... it is fantasy after all.

The interlude chapters were wrote the best. I almost felt as tho there were two writers?! MFC was made to read like she was still in high school and ditzy... I had a horrible time connecting with her, and matbe that's why her chapters fell flat for me.

Ron was a great character. His reactions to situations were close to accurate and I appreciated that. The spicey scenes were actually top notch and wrote with the best fluidity this book had shown. These two things make it worth the read!!

If you're scared by the cover and trigger warnings and blurb... maybe wonder if you could handle those things watered down... because if you could, you should pick this up!!

This is an honest review of a free advanced reader copy. As always check your trigger warnings.

My initial thoughts on this book were that it was a twist on a Vampire novel but then it wasn't. A lot of the same themes were in place yet there are enough subtle differences to make this "Not just another Vampire novel." I am not typically a fan of the alternating time lines throughout the book but I feel like the author did a great job on distinguishing them that there was no confusion and I do feel like it was a great way to give insight into the past and present.

I feel like the main female character is forgettable, in fact I struggle to think of her name and the fact that I can think of eight other character names and still not think of hers is telling. There is growth and development for her through the book but unfortunately (for me) not enough to make her stick out in any way.

I enjoyed this book! The story line is something that captured my attention quickly. I love the books that go back in time and give a good backstory! Plus, this defiantly has some spicy scenes too. I think I would of liked an alternate ending, it seemed a little lack luster from the rest of the book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I am so honored to have been able to read and give feedback for you.

Loved this book. Didn’t want to put it down.
Love a vampire and dark gothic story.
Loved the characters and their past stories.
A. J. Church is a new author to me and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books.

Julianus has a dark past. Being captured by the Contessa and is made to stay and to never leave her manor. He befriends a maid Rosetta and tells him to behave and make the Contessa happy.
The Contessa has her wicked way with him. Christopher enters and he is sadistic and they both turn him into a vampire.

Many years later …

Myra is sweet and keeps to herself. Doesn’t have many friends and would rather keep her head down and concentrate on her college work. She starts to have feelings for a guy Ron who shares classes with her.
She keeps seeing a dark shadow everywhere she turns on the campus grounds.
She meets Julianus and starts to have a relationship. He can’t stay away from her.
Murders start happening on and off campus.
Is Julianus’ pay catching up on him? Is Myra the next victim? Will Julianus keep her safe?

A.J. Church’s The Cruelty of Thorns is an enthralling paranormal romance that dives deep into themes of desire, redemption, and the struggle between light and dark. With a gripping plot, complex characters, and an atmospheric world, this novel offers readers a dark and seductive journey that keeps them hooked from beginning to end.

At the heart of the story is Julianus, a centuries-old creature of the night, whose tortured past has shaped him into a bloodthirsty monster. From the moment we meet him, Julianus’s inner conflict between his darker nature and his desperate longing for redemption adds a fascinating layer to the narrative. He’s both dangerous and alluring, a sensualist tormented by his past, and his obsession with the enigmatic Myra brings fresh purpose to his existence. The way he views Myra as the key to his salvation creates a powerful emotional tension that drives much of the story.

Myra, on the other hand, is a woman seeking a fresh start after a devastating event that shattered her creativity and left her emotionally scarred. Her arrival at Whitfield College offers her a chance at healing, but instead, she’s plunged into a dilemma that threatens not only her heart but also her life. Myra’s character is relatable, with her vulnerability, strength, and the internal conflict she feels between moving forward and being trapped by her past. Her struggle between the two men in her life—Julianus, mysterious and dangerous, and another man who offers stability and sweetness—sets up a captivating love triangle that keeps readers guessing where her heart will lead her.

The love triangle in The Cruelty of Thorns is rich with tension and emotional complexity. Julianus is dangerous, dark, and impossibly tempting, while the other man in Myra’s life offers safety, warmth, and a sense of normalcy. A.J. Church skillfully crafts this dynamic, making both men equally compelling in their own way. As Myra navigates her feelings for both, readers are swept into the push and pull of attraction, loyalty, and fear that defines her choices. Her decision, far from being just about love, holds significant consequences that could alter the course of her life—and those of the men around her.

The novel expertly blends sensuality with darker themes, diving into the complexities of power, temptation, and personal transformation. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and Church doesn’t shy away from the intensity of their desires, making for a steamy, captivating read. Yet beneath the romance is a darker, more dangerous undercurrent. The supernatural elements woven into the story give it an otherworldly feel, heightening the stakes and adding depth to the characters’ struggles.

I gave 'The Cruelty of Thorns' 4 stars because the story was riveting and kept one turning the pages until long after one should be asleep if they wanted to be effective at work the next day. I did *not*give it 5 stars because after a certain part of the story, the extensive sexual scenes between characters became redundant and distracting despite new acts in each scene. After a couple of scenes, the sex could have been less descriptive and wouldn't have hurt the storyline at all. While the author was good at making the smutty parts enjoyable, it just felt like a placeholder after the same two characters had deeply descriptive sex multiple times. The other reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the ending left me unsatisfied in a way I can't explain without spoilers but left me uncomfortable in my skin feeling like I was in the middle of an interesting conversation when the other party got up and left in the middle of a sentence without explanation.

Besides those two issues though, the author did a masterful job keeping the reader engaged in the book and kept you thinking about the story even when you weren't reading. The prose was excellent, the research was top notch, the editing was impressively done and the switch between different time periods from past to contemporary for the MMC was well done and not confusing in the way many authors make it through lack of experience or talent. I truly enjoyed the novella with the exceptions listed above and the ending wrapped everything up. *I* just found it limiting. It didn't need to be a happily ever after, but a little more knowledge regarding the MMC's future and current events would have rounded it out for me personally.

Word of warning: This is a gothic romance and by that, I mean *DARK*. There's blood play, sexual assault (not between the FMC and MMC), extreme violence, murder, revenge, kidnapping and physical assault on women by men (again, not between the main characters), so readers with sensitivities beware. This book is also *definitely* targeted to the 18+ crowd. Preteens and teens should not be reading this with or without parental approval in my opinion. If your child wants to read it and you're considering allowing it, *please* read it first. This book is extremely dark and parents need a better understanding of what they're allowing.

This was a great quick read, but it definitely fell short for me.
Overall a 3⭐⭐⭐

I just need to add before hand, you need to check your trigger warnings. I personally barely have a line when I look at trigger lists but I feel like this one needed more emphasis on the multiple and continuously mentioned of on page r*pe in this book. (just to add, "non consensual sex is mentioned in the triggers, I just feel that it needs to be prefaced that it is detailed throughout the whole book.)

*This review does contain spoilers*

Would I pick this up again? No. If this had a couple extra chapters and a much less rushed ending? Yes, I would definitely give it another go! I would also love to read a story just based on Julianus’ life throughout the centuries dodging Christopher because those interlude chapters honestly carried this whole story.

Cruelty of Thorns was a standalone naughty dark academia + fantasy romance. The MMC Julianus really reminded me of Elijah Michelson from The Vampire Diaries, with his demeanor, dialogue, and favorite grey suit. I really loved how the FMC Myra was really relatable to me. She could not be less impressed with real life men; much preferring the men she read about in fantasy novels. She was young and a bit insecure of herself, which I felt when I was her age. I found her character not being very sure of herself or understanding why attractive men would want her, because she always felt like a miss fit. Which I think a lot of women can identify with.

I really liked the pace of this book and the dual POV. Loved that there was two different love triangles, one in the present and one in the past. Both of which could not be more different. I really enjoyed reading the different story lines and about all of the different complex characters.

Love a morally grey man? Well these vampires are totally morally black! I guiltily, I found myself easily being just fine with that!

We all love a hot and naughty vampire who is obsessed with our FMC, and this book delivers.

It is a guilty pleasure read, with a wholesome ending.

Even if the ending I had in my head was different, I still really enjoyed the outcome. Though I do wish it kind of had more of a supernatural ending to really wrap up the book.

I definitely will recommend this to my friends when they come to me looking for a standalone with a dark and sexy story.

I do say, I would love to read more about these characters in a future book. I think their story could continue on and I would be sat to read all about it.

This was a very quick read. As a whole, the book fell flat for me. I was expecting so much more.

Overall a 3⭐⭐⭐

PLEASE CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS

I loved the flashback chapters for Julianus (our MMC). I felt that the author did a great job of switching between past and present. I didn't ever feel confused with the timeline. I would have loved to see more of Julianus after turning, leading up to him meeting the FMC and dealing with the major conflicts of the book.

The FMC, Myra, was… lackluster to say the least. She didn't have enough depth to be a great FMC. She was very forgettable. She deals with conflicting feelings for Julianus and Ron, a guy in her literature class. The whole conflict between them fell short. Ron feels every bit the background character, and didn't really feel integral to the story. There wasn't enough of a development between Ron and Myra to Justify the ending.

The ending -Julianus leaves Myra after all the fuss and drama to have her. He leaves and that is the end of what should have been the meat and potatoes of the book.. The trauma that Ron and Myra went through is kind of just swept under the rug, and then the two of them are just suddenly happy together. Again, this goes back to not feeling like there relationship had developed enough for that to be an acceptable outcome for the book.

Overall, I think the book would have been rated higher if all of the background story had been fleshed out a little more.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
A girl craving a new beginning, an escape from the misfortune that imprisoned her creativity and chained down her heart. A centuries old vampire searching for redemption. And the perfect sweetheart college boy. Both want her, but who will have her?
A beautifully written masterpiece! “The Cruelty of Thorns” by A J Church is a bittersweet tale, shattering ones heart and only half mending it back together. The characters were astounding and melded seamlessly with the story. Myra though on the basic side, was the perfect soft and broken FMC. She had a ton of development but all at a realistic pace and she is relatable in a number of ways. Julianus, my personal favourite, has the most amount of character growth. ( probably because we see ten times more of his story than anyone else) Then there’s Ron, he’s such a sweet guy who didn’t deserve the hell he went through, and for all the wrong reasons. However he is the perfect addition to this trauma circle.
I find the plot of this novel incredibly intriguing and it was excellently written. From the dual pov and the dual timeline to the way everything merged together as the story went on. Church really knows how to bring a story to life while also making it way hotter than should be possible. From the wording to the intensity and tension everything about this novel pulls me in. The plot is well balanced with the spice and is actually driven forward with it creating the perfect balance. I’m so glad I came across this Arc on booksirens. It’s definitely a top read of the year.
Did I mention the incredible spice? This book can seriously have my heart and soul. Even though it has me torn on the ending because of how bittersweet it is, this book practically owns me and I would do anything to read it for the first time again. I hope I can have this book on my shelves one day.
Thank you to AJ Church, booksirens, and the publishers for the chance to ARC read this book.

I want to preface to say that i do not typically read paranormal romance, as it's my least favourite genre, however i was open to reading this as the "blurb" seemed interesting and attracted me enough to want to know more.

The story is about Julianus, a 300+ year old vampire, and Myra, a young college co-ed who has not had the easiest life. She has lost people who were very important to her, and is alone.

Myra is smart, a romantic and does not consider herself to be beautiful or interesting, despite what Ron (classmate) and Julianus tell her.

We learn, in great detail, how Julianus became a vampire and the losses he too experienced.

Myra reminds Julianus of a love he once had however he soon falls hard for her for who she is, inside and out. Myra can't explain how or why she becomes instantly drawn to Julianus. she does not believe it's love, however their passion is hot enough to make her want to explore this relationship further.

What i liked about the book:
-the character development
-Ron!
-Myra coming into her own: her confidence in herself and standing up for her wants and needs was great to see
-steamy

What i did not like about the book:
- the ending fell flat for me. it also felt rushed. considering how much time was spent on Julianus' early years, i would of liked to see more in terms of depth in the ending.

Thank you to the author for the ARC copy of this book!

This book was not at all what I was expecting. This book is a love story, but not the love story you expect.

At first I wasn't sure the past and present timelines had anything to do with each other because they seemed so disconnected. But they were enjoyable nonetheless. I enjoyed them even more when I realized how they did connect to one another.

I had no idea there would be a mystery element to this story, but I did greatly enjoy it and the thrilling side too. And it gave me a satisfying ending.

I did enjoy the trauma reps in this one and that there was more than one and more just women experienced trauma. It was refreshing as I haven't read too many books that had a male character experience trauma at least not in this way.

I also love the way vampires were viewed in this book. They were real people with thoughts and feelings and needs, but also vicious monsters barely able to contain those urges at times. I love vampires as mich as anyone, but I did like the change.

First off, please make sure you read your trigger warnings as there are some heavy subjects in this book.

I enjoyed the back and forth between the present and Julianus’ history, I think the author did well & i wasn’t confused or unsure of what was going on.
I did however find the ending to be abrupt. I felt that the book was leading to more but it was wrapped up super fast and quickly in the last 2 chapters. I had hoped to find out more about Julianus after the last chapter but nothing was mentioned after he departed, even from Myra.
It made their connection feel less.
While i enjoy a HEA it seemed to gloss over the trauma they endured and the effects they may have. I definitely think the ending could be stretched out a little more to accommodate this.

Overall, I enjoyed the storyline and the building of the present and past. It was easy to follow and the spice was good.

This book is a fast paced, dual perspective, stand alone, with an interlude of the MMC's past running through it and the author pulls it off extremely well.

At first I was worried that the interlude was going to feel messy and clunky as in the beginning other than realising it was the MMC'S origin story but it soon begins to fit into the main story and brings everything together.

Not the most technically correct story, there were the odd editing mishap and the occasional sentence that I'm sure was wrongly written but that may just be me. This made no difference to my reading experience as I'm not one to get caught up in these things but a fair review.

The story ends exactly the way it should have and it's not the way you would normally expect it too which is actually a nice change.

I genuinely recommend this story to anyone who loves vampires, smut, multigender smut. There is a list of triggers at the beginning of the book as it does go into some darker waters.

The Cruelty of thorns is a paranormal romance
Some scenes and topics may be sensitive to some so check the CW/TW before diving in.

First of all I love this cover, this book was good, the plot was done well and I think Church did a good job distinguishing between the past and present it flowed really well and wasn’t confusing, I did like the backstory as it really drew you into Julianus (MMC) character. I’m not exactly sure how I feel about Myra (FMC), her character was kind of forgettable, I felt she didn’t really have much depth to be a memorable piece and Ron I felt there wasn’t enough development there.

Overall this read okay but the ending did fall a bit flat for me, it felt a bit rushed and after everything that happened I was left feeling like, oh okay I guess, but that’s just my personal opinion and others may enjoy it.

Again this is a friendly reminder each reader has different preferences and what one person may not enjoy other may love.

Initally, I really struggled with the dual POV because one was clearly meant to be more of a flashback while the other was the current timeline. Once I realized what was going on, the book became INSANELY addictive! I love how the author dragged out the tension between the main characters from their initial chance meeting until the point where their relationship actually began. I was literally mentally screaming at times "Just go talk to her already!" when the Julianus was talking about his growing obsession with Myra. The spice was definitely 5🌶️ & I liked the fact that the plot wasn't totally centered around it like alot of other similar books. The only reason I have it 3 stars was because I was completely unprepared for the series of twist in the final few chapters & was devastated that it didn't end up the HEA couple I was expecting.

Really this is 3.5 ⭐️ for me…

If you want spice. This is it for you. Very spice heavy from like chapter 3.

I’ll start with what I enjoyed….I loved the interlude chapters. It’s nice to have a significant amount of back story for characters that are several hundred years old like vampires. I liked that characters had growth and were able to over come and acknowledge some identified character flaws. I liked that there was a happy ending.

What I didn’t like…I felt like there was such a build up to Myra being Julianus’ obsession. The lengths he goes to make her his…to just have the ending be the way it was really leaves more to be desired. Additionally, there were some sexy scenes that really left me confused. I found myself doing some serious sex geometry.

Overall, a decent quick read.

The story was very easy to get into right from the first page. It wasn’t a long story so an easy read, in my opinion. The characters and their backgrounds were endearing as well as relatable in many ways. I like to take a look at what I feel when I finish a book and this left me with a feeling of connection and a longing to know them more. There were lots of spicy 🌶️ scenes and definitely trigger ⚠️ warnings to look out for before you read but if you’re okay with all of that it’s a nice little wander into a world of Vampires and Humans. There were a few grammatical moments in the writing however, that took a moment to understand, but it wasn’t tough to decipher after looking at the entire thought in the moment of the storyline. Overall I really enjoyed the read and would definitely look into entertaining more writings of this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark academia novel, which masterfully blends MM and FM spice with a gripping vampire narrative. The story is steeped in dark gothic elements, including torture and murder, making it a captivating read from start to finish. A. J. Church, a new author to me, has crafted a haunting tale that left me eager to explore more of her work.

The novel concludes in a way that defies typical expectations, offering a refreshing change. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys vampires, steamy scenes, and dark smutty scenes. Be aware that it includes a list of triggers at the beginning, as it delves into some darker themes.

Make sure you read the warnings for this book, before you read it. There is death, debauchery, and torture throughout the story. I liked the story, overall. The MFC, Myra was a bit irritating. She refused to listen to anything anyone told her, even if they were concerned about her well-being. She shut down anytime anyone asked her questions about her life. She had a tragedy in her life and she completely shut herself off to her friends. I liked how the story went back and forth with Julianus and his history, we learn his backstory and how he became the way he is. The ending was not typical and what I had expected.

“The Cruelty of Thorns,” by A. J. Church

Julianus was forced to become a monster and hunt people. Myra, a college student, is trying to forget her past when she meets two men that are fighting for her attention. Weird things keep happening at the college and she has to worry about her safety as well as her love life.

I really liked this book. some parts were on the slow side but overall was a good story plot. I did that there was more than the traditional types of relationships, it has m/m as well as f/m. the story plot and characters were mysterious and Myra was relatable and a bit naïve. 4 out of 5 stars.

I have to say it took me a minute to find the headspace to read this book, it had supernatural elements that I personally find fascinating. The same way some descriptions and terms I had a hard time reading and interpreting to the point that translation and definitions were needed.

That aside didn’t really affected the story. The author fluctuates between Past and Present with Julianus and Myra’s pov. The story progresses to the point that I thought it was going to find a cliffhanger. To be surprised it didn’t feel rushed. Each character told their story.

Granted It took me a tad longer to finish, and I was definitely happy with the result. 4/5 for the story 3/5 for the spice. I was personally more driven to know what actually happened than the main characters getting it on 😂.

I for the most part enjoyed this story. Love Vampires and all things Paranormal. Sometimes timeline jumping does confuse me so I did have to reread a few parts but sometimes that is just how my mind works or refuses to work. Has nothing to do with the author but just something that happened for me that could happen for someone else as well.

I enjoyed the characters and how the author built on them. I would love to read more by this author and will probably reread this book again in the future.

I really wanted to like this book and I did up until the end which is why I gave it 4 stars. What I did enjoy was the level of spice and the way the author built the back story as the present progressed, I liked the interaction between the present day Julianus and Myra, along with some side key characters as well. However what left me feeling a bit apprehensive about the book was the ending, after all that they went through, the obsession that Julianus had with Myra just to walk away and let Myra and her additional interest take over with the happy ending. It also felt off that during the time where the HEA was supposed to happen she didn't once think about Julianus.

Well I’m a huge fan of all vampires and the paranormal and this was a good read. Applause to A J for great research, character building and past and present history building. The spice start almost immediately and is spicy spicy spicy. So if that is not your thing read the trigger warnings.

I will say the ending was a disappointment and fell flat for me. I was right there with the characters and then was like what just happened. Not sure if this is just a completed book 1 or the making of a series.

Really enjoyable Supernatural story with a twist and unexpected ending as always nice to be surprised when author take the story in different direction and outcome than may be expected.

Two lovely characters and enjoyed the beginning of Julianus' past life mixed in with current events and circumstances. I really enjoy books when written from both perspective of two main characters and add in two engaging and sympathetic characters to create a lovely, endearing, vulnerable and exciting story. A different kind of supernatural adventure and the dark romance element adds an extra spice to the mix.

ARC Review.

This was a quick read in my free time.

I liked the timeline where we learned about the main character and the vampires in Genoa. I liked the 18+ scenes, and sometimes I had to think about how it was.

There is a love triangle, I was hoping for one ending, but luckily it didn't happen and everything ended with a happy ending.

Overall I am satisfied with this book my rating is 3.5/5

"The Cruelty of Thorns" is a solid vampire romance with well-written characters. Personally I found the frequent shifts in perspective between the present and the past were somewhat annoying. But this comes just down to my personal preference I think.
The ending also felt a bit abrupt, but again, this is a minor issue.

Overall, it's a good story.

3.5/5 stars. I don’t really know how to describe this one. The author has a good writing style, but the book itself just fell short for me. The detail put into the flashbacks was great and really built up Julianus’ part of the story, but the present day POV left me wanting more development in their relationship because it was mostly seeing her relationship/interactions with her friends. Spice was pretty good only a few ick phrases, so overall not bad.

This book takes right off. I went in not knowing really what to expect from the book but let me tell you I was not disappointed at all. This was a great book to read.

I really thought for a minute there it was going to be like a 3way why choose type book but it wasn't. I felt so sad for Julianus. Like my heart wanted everything to work out for him. He went through so much.
