The Atonement of Jesus Christ is discussed in a multitude of ways in it is a cleansing, sanctifying, and healing act of His selfless love. Among those descriptions is an expression that defines the Atonement in terms of its compensating power, or the ability of the Savior to right the wrongs of life—but how exactly does this happen? In a world in which grief, unfairness, and imperfection are hallmarks, Christ’s ability to make recompense is the key to bridging our hopes and our sorrows. In The Compensating Power of Christ, discover how the Lord compensates in your own life as Brigham Young University scholar Dr. B.J. Allen shares insights from his lifelong quest to understand and harness the Savior’s compensating power.
If you’re looking for a book that gives you feelings of hope, joy and the deepest love imaginable; this is a book I think you would love.
This is a new to me author and I am anxiously searching for more from B.J. Allen because this was a powerful read that will be added to my weekly Sunday study.
The more I read from this book the more little things stick out to me that I didn’t catch before. I have always loved studying the Savior’s Atonement and this book provides an amazing backdrop for recognizing the power of the Atonement in our every day life. This book definitely hits on the tender feelings that come from situations that didn’t turn out like you thought they would.
The book is beautifully designed both inside and out. If you’re looking to add peaceful books you can ponder on…add this to your TBR immediately. I can’t recommend it enough!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Wow! This book was SO GOOD. Beautiful truths about Christ beautifully and clearly expressed, along with wonderful artwork throughout. I gained a lot of insight into Christ's atonement and felt the Spirit testifying of wonderful, comforting truths. Highly highly recommend.
What a beautiful book! It's full of profound and thought provoking insights, relatable questions and concerns, and written in an engaging and accessible way.
It conveys a message of much needed hope and encouragement as the author shares "how Christ's Atonement rights the wrongs of an unfair world and imperfect people."
There are beautiful illustrations throughout, and I loved how the author shared examples and life experiences that applied to the principles in each chapter.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in religious studies.
If you need a place to start your in-depth study of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, I would point you here, to this book. I would say this is one of the few books that I have read that have truly changed my life.
This is a helpful book that reminds us of the blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and what they look like in our day-to-day lives today. He compensates for our imperfections and others' imperfections. This includes resurrecting power, forgiving power, purifying power, comforting power, healing power, strengthening power, and compensating power both eternally and immediately. Here are some examples and quotes that I liked:
"The Atonement was not only meant to save us from sin but from the injustices of mortality (p. 2)."
"All that was unfair and imperfect about his life would be made right through the Savior (p. 3)."
"Most of our questions about the imperfections of life revolve around the perceived gap between the beauty of the gospel teachings and the harsh realities of life (p. 4)."
"Christ is abiding in the here and now. His Atonement is compensating us in our complicated and chaotic journey through daily life (p. 4)."
"This book represents my own personal and lifelong quest to find answers to my questions about how to reconcile the beauty of Christ's plan with the inadequacies and unfairness of life (p. 9)."
"'All that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ' (Preach My Gospel, p. 10)."
"'To save' means to protect, to rescue, to keep safe. In other words, Christ's saving grace compensates for everything that is a result of the fallen world, including misfortunes and situations beyond our control (p. 11)."
"Christ... wants to be a part of our everyday life. He has the power to strengthen us as we move through our mortal journey (p. 14)."
"The purpose of this book is to explain the different ways in which Christ's compensating power is enacted in our lives (p. 15)."
"Part of appreciating the infiniteness of Christ's Atonement is understanding its broad applications (p. 17)."
"When Adam and Eve partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they caused the earth to enter a fallen state. Christ's atoning power overcomes all the effects of the Fall, including physical death, and as a result, every person who has lived or will live will be resurrected (p. 20)."
"The Atonement of Jesus Christ is not only meant to cleanse us from past mistakes but also purity us of the adverse facets of our nature (p. 24)."
"Christ is not only the physician but also the medicine (p. 30)."
"Christ's desire is not only to comfort and heal our pain after we fall off the proverbial horses of life; He wants to give us the strength to get back on (p. 30)."
"'Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted, but he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed' (Isaiah 53:4-5, p. 37)."
"How does Christ's Atonement help us achieve our purpose, and what does Christ expect of us to enact that purpose? Often we think about the Atonement in terms of Christ rescuing us from something rather than Christ helping us to become something (p. 39)."
"Christ did not perform the Atonement simply to cleanse us from sin but also to help us become something great (p. 40)."
"Christ's goal is not only to help us back into God's presence but also to help us grow, progress, and become like God so that when we enter His presence 'we shall be like Him' (p. 42)."
"The Lord looks at weakness must differently than He does rebellion (p. 51)."
"Christ asks that we turn to Him and allow Him to change us (p. 52)."
"The Savior's compensation for limitations beyond our control leads to more merciful judgment, both in this life and the next (p. 56)."
"The Lord's blessings are not only for the perfectly obedient but for all those who 'seeketh so to be' (p. 64)."
"Justice is a consequential principle that ensures that blessings and punishments are distributed equitably, based on the merits of the law (p. 66)."
"Christ pays the demands of justice, and the Atonement of Jesus allows God to extend grace--and blessings--that we have not completely earned (p. 67)."
"Christ is not a passive onlooker as we stroll through life trying to meet gospel standards (p. 69)."
"Christ does not require us to give Him a fully grown mustard tree, only a seed that we are actively trying to nourish (p. 73)."
"To help us learn responsibility, patience, love, and other Christlike attributes, God has given us immense responsibility for other people (p. 81)."
"If Christ had not atoned for all the effects of our mistakes... we could never be forgiven and become clean (p. 86)."
"The Atonement makes our efforts enough to accomplish our tasks, and thus the goal is accomplished in the way God needs (p. 89)."
"Christ's enabling power makes our efforts sufficient to accomplish the task, makes up for our weaknesses, and raises our children jointly by His side (p. 91)."
"I had always believed that He could magnify my effort during my Church or other responsibilities, but I had never considered that Christ compensates for my shortcomings in making my tasks sufficient (p. 97)."
"I do not know why God seems to intervene in some situations while staying His hand in others (p. 104)."
"Some compensation comes in this life as well (p. 106)."
"God provides and compensates us with chances that would not have been ours if we had not turned to Him (p. 107)."
"Perhaps one of the greatest examples of the compensatory power of Christ is temple work and salvation for the dead (p. 110)."
"Christ offers recompense for the injustices of life (p. 118)."
"Christ's compensating power applies to every misfortune we experience, every opportunity we lose, every unfairness we encounter, and every heartache we endure (p. 121)."
"The power of Christ enables the refining process to occur through our experience here on Earth (p. 124)."
"Christ will offer recompense for the damage that the world and others cause us (p. 126)."
"Trials alone do not improve us. To these trials must be added Christlike attributes, such as patience, love, and openness, which the scriptures teach are gifts from God (p. 129)."
"One simple way we ask God for help is by communicating with Him through prayer (p. 136)."
"Because all we can do entails changing, we must willingly accept Christ's change agents, even if we do not like them at first (p. 143)."
"If we want Christ to compensate us for our weaknesses, we must desire that same grace for our neighbor (p. 148)."
"We need to make Christ the center of everything we do (p. 150)."

"'In what ways is Christ actively involved in my day-to-day life?' (p. 157)"
"I believe that we can feel Christ's love more deeply when we realize the vast amount of effort Christ is presently putting forth to help us (p. 158)."
This book helped me to understand the Atonement in such a way that I had never thought of. The author did a great job to link the Atonement to this compensating power. He breaks the Atonement up into two parts: 1) a method to save us from our sins; 2) a power that exists to strengthen us and others who have weaknesses or loss. It really helped me understand the way I was brought up and some of the opportunities that I did not have. But because of this compensating power, I was given advantages in my life to find happiness and success. It also helped me feel better about some of the things I have done to offend or hurt others; and how this power gives them strength to move on. I loved the whole book and wholeheartedly recommend this book!
Such a beautiful book and powerful reminder of how Jesus Christ's Atonement helps each of us individually. It helped me better understand how Christ can help us in our everyday. Our Savior knows us individually and has a way to help each of us. This book helped me see Christ's Atonement in a way I never had before. The artwork is stunning as well! Loved this book!!
I really loved this book! Such a great reminder of the many different ways Christ’s atonement compensates us for the difficulties and unfairnesses of life. What resonated with me most was the reminder that He makes up for my imperfections as a mother.
This book is amazing! For any Christian who is trying to figure out where God is in the weaknesses and unfairness of life, this book is for you. I found it very comforting and well-written
This is a wonderful book that describes the atonement of Jesus Christ in a very thought-provoking and personal way. It is a beautiful book that inspires the reader to appreciate the role that Christ can play in our life.
As I've returned to different bookstores to buy more copies for loved-ones and friends, the various clerks have always commented on what a good book it is. That tells me that the concepts in the book apply to everyone, regardless of their background or the personal struggles they have.
This book was powerful, and really helped me understand Christ's atonement in a way that I had not before. It really helped me understand God's mercy and love for all of his children. And the artwork throughout the book is so beautiful. If you want to understand how God and Christ are helping us overcome the unfairness of life, and even our own shortcomings or mistakes, this book is for you. I would highly recommend.
I was impressed with how this book broke down the beauty of Christ's atonement. I learned so much. The author had a great balance of stories and doctrine. The analogies helped me understand the doctrine even more. I also appreciated the scriptures that was included and the many examples of how Christ showed up in people's lives in both the scriptures and in what the author have witnessed in his own life. I appreciated this book so much.
This is a pretty short read for the topic, but full of lots of practical applications for the atonement in each of our lives. I especially loved chapter 5-Christ compensates others for our imperfections. Trying my best, still means I make a lot of mistakes. The Atonement makes my best effort enough♥️
Reminds me of Donna. I love being a compensating blessing to her, and I’m so grateful for their family being mine. This book provides good insight. It is well written with a balance of personal experiences and scriptural or modern words of prophets. Good for home library.
This book made me think of the atonement in a way I never had before, helping me rethink my Heavenly Father’s compensation for my mistakes. I’ve always wondered how it’s fair to people who are hurt because of things other people do, and this book has a great deal of insight into this topic and more like it that was very comforting to me. The art is also so beautiful! I’m anxiously awaiting more work from BJ Allen and will definitely be revisiting this book
4.5 stars. One way I'm responding to President Nelson’s invitation to “Devote time each week—for the rest of your life—to increase your understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ” is reading atonement-centered books. Christ’s atonement has the power to resurrect, forgive, purify, comfort, heal, strengthen, and compensate. This book focuses on this last power—how Christ compensates us for our own imperfections, others for our imperfections, and us for the imperfections of others and the world. If you've felt guilt or burdened because of the gap between who you want to be vs your reality; or because you could’ve been a better mother, teacher, minister, leader; or because of the unfairness of your life’s situation, then this book will help you understand and access Christ’s daily compensating power. I believe that Christ is more involved in our lives than we realize, and it’s books like this one that helps me see and feel the greater possibilities.
Notes:
-“The Lord is compensating me during my darkest hours, but I often only realize it in retrospect.”
-Christ’s Comforting power - Christ did not experience our pains as himself going through our trials, he experienced it as though he were us going through the trial
-Sins vs weaknesses - rebellion vs our natural man
-The Savior makes our faith sufficient to give us the miracles we need today
-Spend time with Christ in the scriptures; come into Him as a child; strive for obedience, while relying on grace; extend charity and mercy by bringing Christ in
-Learn and teach about Christ’s atonement D&C 19:23 – “Christ invites us to ‘Learn of me and listen to my words. Walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.’ Learning about the Savior is a critical early step in building a relationship with Him. Christ’s invitation to learn of Him is an invitation to spend time with him in the scriptures and listen to His words.”
Applications of Christ’s atoning power: -“Through the resurrecting power, we can overcome physical death. Through the forgiving power, we can be forgiven for our actions when we break God's laws. Through the purifying power, we can be cleansed from our unholy natural man. Through the comforting power, we can be consoled during the trials of life. Through the healing power, we can be healed from the inner wounds caused by life's challenges. Through the strengthening power, we can receive strength beyond our own during our trials. Through the compensating power, we can be recompensed for the unfairness of life and the personal weaknesses of ourselves and others.”
This book is so powerful and a perfect reminder of the love our Savior has for us. The book itself is beautiful. The way it’s laid out is very pleasing. The colors of the chapter headings and chapters themselves were lovely. There are also illustrations and pictures throughout the book that bring peaceful feelings.
I jotted down some thoughts while reading of phrases that stuck out to me, but there were even more I didn’t write down.
Here are a few (the wording may not 100% of what was written): Christ fixes things we cannot fix Offers hope for every situation Satan makes us second guess ourselves You are enough because you try your best Christ makes our intentions complete We are enough because Christ makes us enough God is aware of each circumstance of our lives Find peace in our current circumstances God’s definition of fairness is different than ours How can we help others feel His love? We must invite Christ in Asking Christ for help is the beginning Learn of me and listen to my words We must be willing to learn of Him ourselves Christ comes during our journey Our role is doing our best Looking at others with mercy is the result of having charity Be patient with the weaknesses of others We must extend charity and mercy to everyone Teach the atonement over and over Make Christ the center of everything we do
Christ is always with us. He loves you.
Thank you to the publisher and author for the book. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
When I first started reading this book I thought it was about how we can work through the hard things of life when we feel life wasn't "fair" to us. However, this book is so much more. Instead, this book is all about how our Savior Jesus Christ compensates for us in a variety of ways. Sometimes I feel like I'm not living up to my full potential - Christ's atonement covers that. Sometimes I feel like I'm not serving in His kingdom as much as I should be - Christ's atonement covers that too. When I make mistakes, Christ's atonement covers that. It is incredible how far reaching His grace is. After reading this book and the wide array of scriptural and story-based examples BJ shares, I have a stronger understanding of the many ways that Christ compensates in my life. As an ecclesiastical leader I have shared this book several times with people who are struggling and believe it has been a boon to them as well. I can't recommend this book more.
I read this book for Book Club this month in preparation for the Easter season. It was so good! We talked about the book for an hour because the Atonement and Christ's compensating power became personal for each of us! It gives a great perspective on how the Atonement works in our lives and gives us hope to keep trying to do our best. I loved the charts at the end of each chapter that broke down the concepts mentioned and the scriptures that went with it. I suggest taking time to study and ponder each chapter. There are many resources to study in the footnotes. The examples from the author's life were very relatable and made each concept clear. The author also uses several quotes from Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. I plan on reading it every year before Easter or anytime I need a spiritual boost!
This is probably the best book on the atonement that I have ever read. It is such a unique take on the atonement from an LDS perspective. I love the message that Christ compensates our efforts to make them sufficient in all aspects of life, whether that is in parenthood, striving for obedience, or making up for our mistakes. I think the message that spoke the most to me was that Christ compensates our faith as we strive to build our testimonies. I have often felt guilty for not having Nephi-like faith, but reading this book helped me realize that God is okay with whatever level of faith I can muster, and he will compensate it to help me get the miracles that I need. I also loved the book's take on how part of the atonement is to compensate for the unfairness of life and how that happens. It also has a ton of beautiful art and pictures of Christ; it makes a great coffee table book.
What an impactful and insightful book. Wow. I enjoyed reading this book. I couldn’t get enough of it. This is one book I’ll have to read again to gain more insight and understanding. The author says that Christ compensates us for our own imperfections no matter what they are whether it be sin or our own weaknesses. Christ also compensates others for what we do wrong when we hurt others knowingly or unknowingly. Christ also compensates us for the imperfections of others and the world and how it may hurt us. This book really helps to understand that the Atonement is much more that I realized.
This book is absolutely beautiful, both the message and the artwork! This book gives so much peace as it describes how the Savior’s atonement compensates us and others for the shortcomings of this mortal experience. If you or anyone you love struggles with feelings of inadequacy or fear that personal weaknesses will ultimately make it impossible to ever meet the Lord’s expectations, I encourage you to read this book. You will finish feeling inspired, hopeful, and filled with gratitude for the atoning sacrifice of our Savior!
This book helped me think of the atonement totally different than I ever had before. If you feel guilty about your weaknesses and wonder how they will impact you and those you help, such as your children, you have to read this book. If you are a missionary who is worried that you are not enough, you must read this. You will learn about how Christ compensates us and makes us sufficient. A must read!
Like mentioned in the book, I too have at times struggled with my relationship with Christ. I have had experiences with Heavenly Father so powerful that His reality and presence in my life is beyond any doubt for me; but my relationship with Jesus Christ has sometimes been more abstract and theoretical. This book has opened my eyes to new ways I can consider Christ's role in my daily life and I'm excited to work to build more sincere gratitude for and greater reliance on Him.
This book is the best church book I have ever read! The author does a great job at putting his experiences which makes it really personal and makes you think about how the principles apply to you. And it has the most beautiful artwork. I have never thought of the atonement of Jesus Christ in the way that the author talks about, which really just opened my eyes in the greatest way possible. I recommend this book to everyone I know!
Feeling down or hopeless? This book really helped me understand that through Christ's compensating power, through His love and mercy, I am receiving blessings far beyond what I "deserve". Jesus knows me personally and loves to shower all of us with His grace. This book is easy to read and gives a lot of peace and hope, not just for the hereafter, but for the Now.
I loved this book. This book explains and breaks down the aspects of the atonement and our Saviors sacrifice in simple but profound ways. It gave me a more clear perspective on how the Savior views us and our relationship, and how I can better understand my relationship with him. This book has been a blessing in my life.
Do you want to know how Christ’s atonement can help you in your life? Read the “Compensating Power of Christ”. In a simple, easy to understand format, Allen explains how Jesus Christ helps all of us, and how we can take advantage of His atonement. A must read for all of us.
