To save my best friend, I sacrificed myself to a vampire.
The fanged warrior wants nothing to do with me…until he gets a taste. Now he won’t let me go.

Cyan of Blood ‘til Dawn never wanted a blood pet, a human to protect and care for in exchange for blood. But thanks to a centuries-old agreement between humans and vampires, he’s stuck with me. As long as my best friend is safe, I’ll accept the hand I’m dealt.

Cyan, with his sharp smirks and ruthless teasing, prefers variety when it comes to his feedings. He’s not the type to commit to one blood source, let alone one female in his bed. Clearly, neither of us want this blood pet arrangement.

Until a tiny cut spills my blood and undoes everything.

Cyan can’t stop himself from tasting me. And I can’t help but crave the toe-curling pleasure when he draws on my vein.

He may be addicted to my blood, but that doesn’t mean Cyan desires me.

Good thing I’m more than just a pet to a bloodthirsty man who will never love me.

I’ll make him regret using and discarding me like a toy.

Even when I want him just as badly as I hate him.

Taste of Fate is a standalone romance with a guaranteed HEA. This series contains fated mates, possessive vampires, and a new world full of conflicts and secrets. Perfect for fans of The Black Dagger Brotherhood and Immortals After Dark!

Something about this book really did it for me! The world the author started to flesh out with this book is really interesting and I'm totally planing on going back and reading the werewolf series that's connected to this universe.

The main characters were interesting to read about. The heroine is very sympathetic and I was rooting for her right up until she made a unilateral decision and decided that she was the victim in the situation (more on that later). The hero had a very unique name (considering I've been reading PNR for over a decade now and I've never come across it before). I LOVE that his nickname is Cyanide. It really did something for me LOL.

P.S. The third act "break up" when they weren't even actually together was annoying and unnecessary.

Now onto my one issue with this novel:

Overall this was a great read even though the last third was not to my liking. I do intend to read the next book and I'll reevaluate from there!

First, taste of fate( book 1 of the vampires of Sanguine series) was an incredible read, I liked the world building especially the vampire community, it is like a fresh take (for me) from the vampires live in creepy castles and wear cloak stereotype. Lol.
When the FMC sacrificed herself to be taken instead of her best friend without knowing what awaited her, I literally fell in love with her. She deserves the best.

Cyan and Tavia are sooo it , their love is so heart warming. ( I'm trying hard to not input spoilers).

So if you are looking for a paranormal romance with an enjoyable plot. You are at the right place.

And I look forward to Amy and Novak, in their own book.

This was my first book by Sophie Ash and I was definitely impressed. Her writing style had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn’t put this down. She didn’t have to have constant conflict or action to keep me drawn in either which was different because that’s usually what keeps me engaged, but somehow she kept me wanting more with the slow burn, not overly dramatic relationship. I loved everything about Cyan and Tavi! 2 selfless people ready to give everything to the other one because they’d never ask for it for themselves! Plus he’s a protective vampire so what’s not to love?! I can’t wait to read more of Ash’s books!

Thank you to Booksirens and the author for the ARC!!

A steamy paranormal themed romance that has a dystopian theme placed in a more modern setting. The world building is not too extensive and easy to understand but also created an amazing and immersive setting for the story. The characters were thoughtfully written and shown in a dual POV which is one of my favorite ways to connect further within a relationship. The read itself is fast paced and exciting which left me craving more before even finishing the first book!!

There are many elements within the book that make it so unique and such an enjoyable but relatable read. The relationship between each character emphasizes the important of devotion and true love within the journey to find yourself and love you and those around you fully and unapologetically. The characters themselves struggle with lots of self doubt which creates a strong connection between them and the reader as we get to keep seeing why the choices they make are made and helping us too better understand the overall outcome.

There are definitely some trigger warning though in this story that I feel are important to pay attention to but overall I would surely recommend this book to any dark romance reader !!

Cyan (Cyanide) & Octavia (Tavi or Tavia): Book 1 Vampires of Sanguine: Sophie Ash is great at character development and world building. This series is set in Shyftworld, the same world as Howling Death MC series. The story flowed well and I was fully immersed right away. Cyan & Tavia are the perfect match for each other. Loved this story & I am excited to read more from Shyftworld.

Great start with Tavi volunteering to be a vampire’s pet as a sacrifice for her human settlement. Some expectations were subverted when her vampire “protector” turned out to be such a sweet man.
I was hooked from the start and I cared about the characters, but as chapters went by, the story became a little dull, underdeveloped.
It is an enjoyable read, but left me wanting more for such a promising beginning.

This was such a fun quick vampire romance.
I loved the slight dystopian vibes and the addition of it being a vampire motorcycle club.
Pair all of that with a golden retriever MMC and a blood bond and you’ve got the perfect combination for a bingeable read!

i don’t know. i’m just confused as to why someone who takes no shit like tavia would forgive cyan so easily after he humiliated her like that. didn’t seem right to me? i guess folks who hate miscommunication trope would love this one.

that’s not to say that i’m big on miscommunication trope, but based on the blurb, i had expected some angst. it’s like the author built it up, got lazy halfway, and decided to wrap everything up quickly.

Oh my God, what a surprise! This book was amazing, I can say that it is difficult to find good books that have vampires so i’m happy that i give a try to this one.
(I think I'll always love good books with vampires because I love the twilight saga🤭) anyway I have to say that this book really surprised me and that I ended up really liking the book!!!

This was absolutely lovely paranormal romance! Everything in this story did pull on my heart strings in the most tender manner possible. I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did, but I am so pleased that this has been such a wonderful reading experience.

Tavi and Cyn were absolutely adorable. I loved the slow- building romance here, where the characters started off as strangers, then their connection transformed into friendship and eventually it did bloom into something more sensual. Of course, there were some hurdles along the way, but when push came to shove, they were there for each other. They both were so selfless, so compassionate that I could not help being smitten with their love story. This is probably one of the most tender love stories that I have encountered.

I found the Sanguine universe quite diverse, enchanting and rather alluring. The slight dystopian vibes added that extra edge to the story, which I appreciated. The author has done exceptional work with this book as she has portrayed this vampire MC club as a family unit and that is easily seen through the strong friendships and support system among the members. There is no judgement or viciousness within a family and it appears that the vampires here are much more caring and empathetic than the purely human settlements.
I hope that there will be more to come from this marvellous universe.

I was bit afraid at the beginning of this book. The early 2000s dystopian teen fiction vibes were strong, but it moved away with an interesting world build, likable characters, and accessible story. However, I feel like the main characters weren’t given enough time to actually build a relationship. There was a lot of tell not show and too much back and forth without any cool down between. I could believe that the characters would build a relationship; I just wanted to see it happening. So an enjoyable read but not in my top ranks.

I was blessed enough to receive an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've been on a vampire kick lately (finally got around to watching Interview with a Vampire...I know, I'm late to the party) and was so excited to see an ARC opportunity for a vampire romance! This was my first book by Sophie Ash and it was a good time.

Before I get into my review I want to give you guys some basics: it's duel POV between the MMC and FMC, written in first person (sadly not my favorite POV but that seems to be all that's out there nowadays), contemporary setting, slow burn (my FAVORITE), with low spice (only 2 scenes). One other note I want to make is that it's also featuring a "motorcycle club". They don't ever refer to themselves as an MC but it feels like it and if you're not into that, it could be a turn off.

Ok onto the review. As usual, I like to post the negative first and end with the positive.

CONS:
-the "bestie" relationship with Amy was not my favorite. There were times when I found her and Tavia to be annoying
-the Kalix plot was kind of weak. I needed more backstory I think to make me feel sad for him.
-Cyan's reasons for not wanting a blood mate were eyeroll worthy and got on my nerves
-this is a minor con, but there's little explanation of Tamkra and she seems like an interesting deity. There may be more about her in the author's other books, but some more world building around this goddess (?) would be awesome, especially since this is the first in the series
-this last one is a con for me personally that did not effect the rating because I know everyone has different tastes. But I did not find Cyan to be attractive. I like my long haired shadow daddies and he's got a short buzz cut. I was picturing Michael from Prison Break.
What I wanted:
description
What I got:
description
Curse you Anne Rice for forever altering how I view vampire men.

PROS:
-the steamy scenes were A+
-The Marrowers seemed like an interesting community and you'll be left with a cliffhanger that makes you want more
-it opens with a Hunger Games vibe and I dig it
-it's a universe with multiple creatures (ex. dragon shifters were cool af)
-Um hello....vampires on motorcycles. What more could a girl want?
-even if Cyan not wanting a blood pet/mate were frustrating, I think that was the goal of the author. It's good writing if you feel emotions! I also did enjoy that he was angsty even if it did get old.
-DID I MENTION IT WAS A SLOW BURN I love to be burned slowly
-THORNE now he's got potential to be a shadow daddy but I wanted more of him and less of Cyan being an angsty whiner

All in all, this was a fun, quick read perfect for sitting outside on a summer evening, enjoying a hard seltzer. I would recommend!

I obtained this book as an arc copy through book sirens however this did not influence in any way my opinion.

I read this book without knowing this is a spin off to another book series. However, it pretty much reads as a standalone book without any problems.

This story is about Tavia who gives a bit of hunger game vibes and volunteers herself to take the place of her sick friend in being given as a pet blood to the vampire clan. Everyone including herself pretty much thinks it's a dead sentence, however the vampire clan does things differently and they do not kill their pet bloods they have basically a master pet relationship where they keep them safe and provide for them. On this aspect it did gave a little bdsm master pet vibe but it wasn't really nothing like that, not a bad thing either way. As Tavia and her vampire master gets to know each other becomes a slow fight; are they going to be together or eventually part ways and be given to another vampire chosen by her. It's a slow burn mild spice and written on dual point of views one from the mmc and the other from the fmc. It also includes several fantasy creatures like dragon shifters and werewolf, different clans of vampires each one with their own differences. The main clan in the story line does have a motorcycle clan vibe as well.

I really enjoyed this read. I pretty much read this in two sittings. It was a good pace read with no slowing or boring parts. I wanted to know so much more of the world building and what was going around with other clans and the humans.

The fmc is pretty strong and kick ass heroine however her relationship with her friend Amy was at best odd. At times it just seems Tavia did the heroine thing to strong and didn't really take in consideration what Amy would have wanted for herself. They are some plots in the book I would have wanted to see a resolution like with Kalix. I did get several times annoyed at the mmc repetitive whine sentence that he so much wanted to adhere by. All part of the story and honestly it was a very good overall story.

So, if you like motorcycle gang, vampire bites and other shifters with a slow burn this is the book for you.

🌶️🌶️ - slow burn

Every 50 years a human is “given” to the ruling vampire clan as a blood pet.

Cyan, youngest member of ruling vampire clan, Blood ‘til Dawn. Is funny, smart, handsome, stoic and guilt ridden. He literally drew the short straw to be the one to “receive” a human blood pet. He doesn’t want one. It’s just going to complicate his life and stifle any and all variety from his lifestyle. He loves his life, being able to sample all kinds of shifter, vamp, angel and the exclusive and rare werewolf blood.

Tavia, strong, passionate, protective, caring and sassy. She is a member human clan in Sanguine. She is an accomplished wine/beer/ cider maker, but she says it’s just a hobby. Her best friend Amy is ruthlessly bullied by the other humans. Tavia is her protector, leaving to be a blood pet puts Amy in danger of further bullying and harassment without her there.

Cyan does some pretty hurtful things to Tavi in response to his burgeoning feelings for her. He KNOWS what is happening between them. But he tries to convince himself he doesn’t want her, a blood pet. Or worse a potential blood mate! Then he would be shackled to them for the remainder of their existence, he couldn’t partake in the variety of blood available ie: dragon shifters.

Tavi makes friends with Bea and a few others from the clan. It’s a rocky hot/cold relation with Cy. She’s aware of her own feels that are developing for Cy, she’s getting whiplash from his mood swings. She wants to talk about it and tries a few times with Cy just shutting it right down and shutting out for weeks on end.

When she gets word that her settlement was attacked by vampires during daylight she lets her new clan leader know, but they can do nothing until sunset. She of course races back to try and help, but it’s too late the attack is pretty much over and those few who survived are hidden away. She needs to find Amy.

After a heartbreaking confession from Cy , Tavi moves out of his apartment. Cyan awakens to finding out about the attack and subsequently can’t find HIS Tavi. He immediately takes off after her, racing to help her with the rest of the clan coming as back up. He’s so worried about making it to Tavi in time he races off before them. All that matters is getting to Tavi.

I hope there is more to come from this, it could be a great series. I still have unanswered questions and want to know more about the history of some of the other vampire clans and Amy’s new life.

Rating: 3½ ⭐

Taste of Fate offers a compelling blend of intrigue and slow-burn romance, set against a modern backdrop that feels both accessible and immersive. While the atmospheric tension kept me turning the pages, a few narrative choices left me wanting more.

The Highlights: World-Building & Tension.
The standout feature of this novel is the delicate world-building. Set in a self-contained universe of magical beings, such as vampires, angles and shifters, coexisting behind a intriguing veil with a human world. Sophie Ash manages to weave the dystopian elements seamlessly into the main story without resorting to heavy-handed exposition. The modern setting makes the stakes feel immediate and easy to follow.

The romance is a classic slow burn, simmering with steamy tension. Both main characters (MCs) spend a significant amount of time ignoring their obvious connection, which builds a great foundation for their chemistry.

Room for Improvement
Despite the solid setup, the story stumbled in a few key areas:

Pacing of the Romance: While the tension was high, the book would have benefited from more "steamy slip-ups." I was looking for those "this is just to break the tension" moments that lean into the enemies-to-lovers trope before they finally acknowledge their feelings. Additionally, when the MMC finally slips up, the lack of grovelling felt like a missed opportunity for emotional payoff.

The "Vanishing Human": There is a subplot involving a human character who appears and then disappears without much explanation. This felt like a disjointed addition that lacked planning, leaving a loose end that distracted from the main plot.

Character Consistency: The biggest sticking point was the FMC’s decision regarding her friend at the end. While clearly designed to bridge the gap into book two, the choice felt out of character for Octavia. It ignored everything she knew about her friend's needs and made her come across as the AH in that moment. An alternative option for the change was available.

Final Verdict
Taste of Fate is a solid read for those who enjoy dystopian settings with a heavy side of romantic tension. However, a lack of angst and some questionable character choices in the final act keep it from being a five-star read. It feels less like a standalone and more like a series introduction that still has some fleshing out to do.

"You're my fate. I can never have just a taste of you. I will devour you."

5 stars!

I was so excited when Sophie announced she was writing a spin-off series focusing on the Blood 'till Dawn vampire clan and set in the same world as her shifter series! Although I fully expected this book to be dark, gritty, and sexy, I was surprised by the vulnerability and heartbreak that both Cyan and Tavia experience. As much as I love a brooding alpha, I loved seeing Cyan unsure and dazed by his sudden obsession with a blood pet he never wanted. His remorse and guilt over his past continued to hold him back, but his attempts to distance himself from his mate were no match for the storm this is Octavia Franz.

Tavia was such a fantastic heroine, and I loved her strength and independence. She was not beholden to Cyan despite his constant mood-swings and the fact that she was in a completely new world. She was determined to find her place in her new home and knew that included having Cyan by her side, but I loved how she wasn't afraid to call him out on his hot-and-cold behavior. My heart broke for Cyan and his sense of unworthiness; it has been a constant in his life for so many years that it takes the unfaltering love and devotion of his blood mate to bring him back to life. Cyan and Tavia complimented each other so well, and I loved seeing them care for each other. I loved this first book in a new series by Sophie, and I am so excited for what's to come🖤

Tropes: fated mates, hate-to-love-you, charming but tortured hero, sassy heroine, forced proximity, 'touch her and die' vibes, hurt/comfort, slow burn, MC vampire clan, opposites attract, age gap, obsessed but reluctant hero, sacrificial heroine, blood-frenzy, found family, STEAMY🔥

My Cyan, the broken yet charming vampire who is obsessed with his blood pet...

Tavia has always protected her best friend, Amy. When Amy is selected by their human conclave to be the next sacrifice to the vampires to maintain an ancient agreement, Tavia rushes to volunteer to take her place. But instead of being viciously murdered, Tavia is given to the vampire Cyan as a blood pet. Unfortunately, he has no interest in a blood pet, so the two agree to fake the bond while Cyan pursues his thirst for blood elsewhere. When Tavia accidentally bleeds in his presence, it becomes abundantly clear that she means more to him than expected. But Cyan is determined to deny their bond, leaving Tavia to find her own way amongst the vampires.

Tavia is a relatable and resilient main character. She has as fairly jaded world view but still manages to be optimistic and respond well to the extreme changes to her life. Her main goal is to keep those she cares about safe, so she is willing to put up with quite a lot to maintain that goal.

On the other hand, I found Cyan to be extremely difficult to care about. From his own feelings of inadequacy and guilt, he fluctuates wildly between being warm and inviting to Tavia and cold and harsh toward her. He keeps information away from her and deliberately hurts her feelings to chase her away. This behavior goes on for much longer than I could really tolerate, which made the ending feel a little bit rushed. I would have liked for Cyan to realize he was being terrible sooner so that he could show some actual changed behavior longer for more overall believability.

Taste of Fate was a good vampire romance taking place in a rich urban fantasy world that was quite enjoyable to read. I would have personally thrown Cyan out with the trash, but Tavia made the book worth reading.

Quick summary: In a world where humans are the least prominent and most vulnerable species, Tavia lives in the last purely human settlement with her best friend, Amy. At the half-century selection - where one human is chosen to be sacrificed to satisfy a pact with the ruling vampire clan - Tavia offers herself up as blood pet in Amy's place. Tavia is committed to her fate regardless of what being the offered blood pet entails, even if it means slavery or death. As she settles in with Cyan and the Blood 'til Dawn clan, Tavia quickly comes to realizes that life as a human in a vampire settlement might not be the nightmare that it was made out to be.

Overall thoughts: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Good writing. Kept me interested and wanting to read without having one central outside constant conflict. I liked the chemistry between the Tavia and Cyan. A lot of the overall banter between a number of the characters was really good as well!

Detailed thoughts: Taste of Fate, book one in the new Vampires of Sanguine series by Sophie Ash, was an enjoyable read. It is a contemporary paranormal romance with vampire and humans at the forefront, but does mention wolf and dragon shifters, and briefly angles. The world is different and interesting. It's relative similarities to Earth's society is enough that you don't feel lost. The world building on the fantasy-side of it is enough that it is intriguing but not overwhelming.

I enjoyed the tension between the two MCs. Tavia is on-the-whole a fantastic FMC. She is strong but open. She isn't afraid to be her on person and deals well with what is thrown at her. Cyan is a decent MMC. He has all the making of a tough, shadowy MMC that romance readers love. However, his hot/cold/flirty/undeserving routine could feel like a bit too much at times. While I feel for him and empathize with his since of worthlessness, I did not like how that was expressed in his relationship with Tavia.

Overall, I was not a fan of Tavia and Amy's friendship. I'm not sure if it was because we don't initially get a lot of time with them together to feel the relationship, but it didn't seem very true or strong to me. I did like the found family comradery of the Blood 'til Dawn clan.

If you like a contemporary setting, motorcycle-riding vampires, found family, and forced proximity, slow burn romance, this might be a good book for you.

2.5 stars!

I enjoyed this but thought the execution was a little lacklustre. This is a spin-off of another series but can be read as a standalone, yet we jump right into the world and action. This wasn't necessarily a problem, as various different concepts and terms were explained fairly quickly, but I think the book would have really benefited from a couple of extra chapters at the start (one for each character) to more naturally establish their characters, as the dialogue and character-building in the first two chapters felt quite forced, particularly for Tavia. Her relationship with Amy came across as very odd.

There were also some issues with pacing, with the 'love' between the two characters coming sort of out of nowhere.

Also, I am categorically not a fan of characters in romantasy (or romance) novels having sex at the most inappropriate times (but maybe that's just me), e.g.:

Tavia: 'My best friend has just died, you've attempted to bring her back to life but it may not work.'
Cyan: '...'
Tavia: 'You know what I need [that's a quote]? A shag in the room I used to share with my dead best friend, who is know in a cellar somewhere nearby, right next to her bed.'
Cyan: 'Okalie dokalie, let's go'

A Taste of Fate by Sophie Ash is a paranormal romance and book one in the Vampires of Sanguine series. Tavia is a good friend, she sacrifices herself to the vampires to save her friend and becomes a blood pet to Cyan as part of an age-old agreement between the vampires and the humans, the only issue is that Cyan doesn’t want a pet. He enjoys being his own man, flitting from woman to woman and not answering to anyone. The only issue is that he hasn’t met Tavia, the strong willed, sassy human, but when he does his opinion changes, but he has already made a deal with her to not drink from her….a deal that is going to be challenging for both of them.

Cyan has been through a lot as a vampire and feels unworthy of a lot of things, but especially of a woman like Tavia. This causes him to push her away a lot and causes some tension between the two as well as misunderstandings, but underneath all the drama, there is genuine feelings between the two.

This story has a few twists and turns going on, with a short backstory on why the vampires get a human sacrifice and what makes the humans so scared. There is also a sub story between Tavia and her best friend which wasn’t my favourite thing, and I found Amy to be a little judgy (but that’s just me). But I did enjoy the world building, as well as the relationship buildup between Tavia and Cyan. Overall, a good start to a series and I’ll probably pick up the next one!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

🌟🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book sank its fangs into me from the very beginning and refused to let go. I absolutely loved the story and the gripping, slow burn romance between Tavia and Cyan.

Tavia is a character who’s incredibly easy to love. She’s brave, selfless, and resilient, with a fierce determination to care for those she holds dear. I admired how she pursued her passions, like winemaking, and didn’t need the approval of her community. When her world is turned upside down, Tavia doesn’t shrink back—instead, she embraces the change and discovers that not everything she’s been taught is true.

Cyan, on the other hand, is weighed down by a deep sense of guilt that casts a shadow over his life. He’s convinced he doesn’t deserve happiness and undermines himself constantly. Deeply entrenched in his playboy lifestyle, Cyan has no desire for exclusivity. But when Tavia enters his life, she throws a wrench into everything he thought he wanted, igniting a powerful internal conflict.

The slow-burn sexual tension between Cyan and Tavia is electric, and it reveals Cyan’s possessive side in a way that’s both thrilling and frustrating. There were moments when I wanted to throttle him for the way he treated Tavia. His hot-and-cold behavior was maddening, and even when I understood the reasons behind it, it still hurt to see him cause her pain.

The found family aspect of this story is perfect. Bea, Des, and Laith are fantastic characters, and I’m dying to see Laith and Des get their own books. *Taste of Fate* is a fantastic read, especially for those who love spicy vampire stories and fated mates. It’s a must-read!

Dnf@ 131 pages in.

I started this book today, and I'm giving up on it today.

Sadly this book bored me to the point of getting a bad headache and now I'm upset for two reasons.

I really wanted to love this, but for a book that's marketed as a paranormal romance and the synopsis only mentions the said so romance, I was expecting just that. But I got 131 pages in and there was no romance yet. There was some minuscule flirting but really the only thing that had happened in the book up to that point was world building; literally the only thing since she had been taken as a blood pet. And I didn't sign up for that. Also the main plot of the book that was showcased in the synopsis didn't even happen yet.

I wanted what was marketed to me and I wasn't getting it so sadly I had to dnf. I think if you like political, contemporary paranormal romance books that take a while to get to the romance part of it all, then you would probably love this story and what it has to say. And if it was marketed as such--Lets be honest I probably would have picked it up anyways because I'm still finding my taste in this genre, but then it would have been my fault because I knew what I was getting into.

I thought I was going to be reading a fun, spicy, vampire romance book, but 131 pages in and it was no where to be seen. But I absolutely love the covers of these books and there's nothing wrong with the book at all, it even talks about consent a lot and I love that especially in a romance, but please authors market your book correctly, because it hurts when you don't

This was okay. The beginning started well and then it just went downhill.

I think the major problems I have are the characters and the dialogue, they are just dull. They felt so shallow yet over explained in equal measure—if that makes sense—there was no light or shade to the characters, no slow burn, intrigue or anything. No individual characterisation to separate them, everyone was just so beige and boring.

Cyan’s POV and personality is basically him being obsessed with Tali (with subtle sprinkling of friendship angst), and running hot and cold like an asshole. The slow-burn is dead, and more like a suppressed insta-love. Amy, on the other hand, serves no real purpose than to be anti-vampire, and be annoying. She is another who suffers from a lack of dialogue nuance, as every character speaks the same, it felt like they all were the same person, especially minor characters like Amy, Robin, etc..

I will say that the two main characters had tension (it took awhile past the internal monologues, but hot once it started), and the author did great at world building. It felt very fleshed out and established the narrative well, however that initial lustre faded overtime—it just wasn’t enough for me.

Ultimately, the book is forgettable. I just didn’t care about any of the characters, and had to stop. I’m sorry, but if you are into insta-romance, key world building, vampires and good tension—maybe give this a go.

So I got a few chapters in before I realized A Taste of Fate is set in the same world as Sophie's Howling Death MC series. It was a happy surprise. Tavia is this book's MFC. I liked her. Tavi is a fierce protector of those she cares about. She may be a little reckless at times, but she has a good heart and a surprisingly sweet disposition when she's not threatened.

The connection between Tavi and Cyan was instantaneous. I liked them together, especially since Tavi felt safe enough to let go of her protector role. However, Cyan's rakish ways and guilt cause a lot of tension. He couldn't get out of his own way, and it made me want to scream, especially since Tavi had an open heart.

The plot was easy to fall into. This is a modern fantasy, meaning this world mimics some aspects of the human world. The leading clan feels more like an MC. The human tribe has a cult vibe going on and loads of romantic angst. How could I resist? The plot was good, but the world-building was top-notch. I really enjoyed seeing the vampire world. Sophie was great with the details. I thought vampire society was going to be brutal and extremely bloody. I'm surprised to find it very civil.

Taste of Fate was great. The story didn't end exactly as I expected, but I enjoyed it. There was a bit of a mystery towards the end that I believe will ARC the overall series. I'm dying to know where it all leads. Taste of Death is up next. I already have it and will be jumping in sooner rather than later.

I was hooked from the very first page! Taste of Fate pulled me in and didn’t let go until the very end. Sophie Ash has a way of writing that makes you feel every emotion right alongside the characters—hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, desperation—and my heart was racing as I felt those same feelings right along with Tavia.

Tavia is the kind of heroine I love: selfless, courageous, and unwavering in her devotion to the people she loves. The lengths she goes to for her best friend are nothing short of inspiring, and honestly, she’s the epitome of what every human should strive to be—brave, loyal, and determined even in the face of impossible odds.

And then there’s Cyan. Oh, Cyan. His sharp smirks and ruthless teasing had me on edge the whole time. The push and pull of his emotions gave me such whiplash I thought I was going to be sick (in the best way possible). One moment you want to strangle him, the next you’re swooning—his back-and-forth with Tavia is absolute torture in that delicious fated-mates way.

This story is more than just a vampire romance—it’s about sacrifice, resilience, and finding love in the last place you expect. The chemistry is electric, the angst is brutal, and the payoff is so satisfying.

If you love possessive vampires, fierce heroines, and a romance that’s as heart-wrenching as it is swoon-worthy, then you need Taste of Fate on your shelf.

Some stories hook you with romance. Others hook you with choice, and Taste of Fate absolutely falls into the second camp. When Tavia volunteers to replace her best friend as a vampire sacrifice, she expects brutality, not survival. Instead, she’s bound to Cyan as a blood pet in a bargain neither of them truly wants, setting the stage for a slow-burn relationship tangled in guilt, denial, and power imbalance.

Tavia is the undeniable strength of this book. She’s grounded, emotionally intelligent, and driven by loyalty rather than reckless passion. Her worldview is understandably jaded, yet she adapts with resilience that feels earned, not performative. Watching her navigate vampire society while holding onto her sense of self made the story compelling even when the romance struggled.
Cyan, however, was difficult to invest in. His hot-and-cold behavior, emotional withdrawal, and intentional cruelty toward Tavia went on far too long. While his internal conflict is clear, the delayed accountability makes the resolution feel rushed. I wanted to see sustained change, not just be told it finally happened.

The urban fantasy setting is immersive, the vampire lore is engaging, and the premise is strong enough to carry the weaker romantic payoff.

This is a good fit for readers who enjoy vampire romance with political intrigue, patient heroines, and slow-burn tension. If emotionally distant love interests frustrate you, this may test your limits.

I feel like the blurb doesn't match the actual content. It makes it sound much more dramatic than it actually is.

Another issue: I was immediately put off by the way the FMC treats her friend in the first chapters. I mean, she pities her, but does she actually value her as a friend? What qualities does Amy possess? She's weak and sickly and she hates vampires. That's it. The FMC was extremely condescending to her, as if Amy is not a 27 year old grown woman with asthma and an unspecified heart condition but a mentally challenged toddler. And all those stories about how fiercely she protects Amy and how she's ready to sacrifice herself for her sounded a bit too much like humble bragging.
Sex scenes were fine, but the relationship didn't develop properly.

3.5 (rounded down)
This is the first book in a planned series about vampires. Its dual first-person POV

What I liked:
The vampire lore is a bit different from what Ive read so far but well explained and I liked that the author gave it a unique touch.
Character dynamics especially for friendships.
Smut was well written and I did not cringe from the dialogue during
Looks like there will be an overarching plot for the following book(s) instead of just random stand-alones and I like that
The character dialogue was very natural imo, opposed to sometimes overly sassy and snarky comments I see in other series

What I didnt like:
The book starts a bit too abrupt for my taste and has too much "show dont tell". Some may like that, I prefer a slightly slower ease into the story.
Worldbuilding was a bit lacking but we might see more in the second book. Overall I would say that the book felt too short. I like well fleshed out relationships and wished we had seen more organic interactions with lower stakes. I could not understand some of the decisions from the MCs because we lacked insight into their past or maybe just information about how others (friends) see them. Hope the second book will focus on that more

Would recommend if you like vampires, fated-mates and non-cringe smut. Will definitely read the second book

The first book in a new series, Vampires of Sanguine. Set in the same world as Howling Death MC.

This was a beautifully written and emotive story.
We have Tavi who volunteers to be the 50-year blood sacrifice to the ruling vampire gang in order to save her friend.
And then Cyan, a young vampire, with an emotional past, who never wanted a blood pet, he's not the type to commit and prefer variety in his feeding and his partners. Now he's stuck with a human he should solely feed on and be responsible for.

The two are thrust together, and what starts as friendship grows into something more, once he gets a taste of Tavi's blood.

This story had some very deep themes like sacrifice, feelings of guilt, and a few hints at self harm and self-destructive behaviour. All of these were dealt with in a respectful way and added layers to this fated mates romance.
We got to see the MCs grow as a couple, and ultimately, they were the perfect balance for each other.

I can not wait for more from this world.

If you like a fated mates vampire romance, set in a world with other supernatural beings, a slow burn with forced proximity, and an emotional journey, then this is a book for you.
And if you're looking for fated mates werewolf romances set in the same world, check out Howling Death MC
