Riverbend K-9s #3

A Whisker of Suspicion

Rate this book
7 hours, 4 minutes

Wildlife veterinarian Dr. Veronica Perry travels the world to help animals in need. When Riverbend Animal Conservation Center offers her a chance to lead their veterinary team while helping repopulate endangered species in her own backyard, Veronica can’t turn it down. It doesn’t hurt that living in Riverbend, Indiana, will also give her the chance to help train Luna, a foster puppy for Riverbend K-9 Academy’s wildlife detection program. Kai Torres is the head zookeeper at RACC. When his longtime friend, Veronica, joins their team, they work together to help restore RACC’s new land conservancy, just a few miles away from Riverbend. Restoring the abandoned land will be well worth it both for native species and for Riverbend itself, especially after they discover that two Riverbend citizens have been attacked nearby. However, after Veronica and Kai believe RACC’s land is finally safe, Luna starts finding scents where they don’t expect them. Too late, they realize that the person responsible for the attacks is using RACC’s land conservancy as cover for a more nefarious crime. And they’ll do whatever it takes to make sure Veronica and Kai don’t discover the truth. A Whisker of Suspicion is Book 3 in the Riverbend K-9 Series. All books in the Riverbend K-9 Series may be enjoyed as standalone novels or as a series.

This is book three of the Riverbend K-9’s series and the main characters are wildlife veterinarian Dr Veronica Perry, who travels the world helping out at various locations as needed, and Kai Torres, who is the head zookeeper at the Riverbend Animal Conservation Center (RACC), in Riverbend, Indiana. Dr V is just finishing up another short spell at RACC, helping out with vet duties after they lost their full time vet due to certain issues with a former director who was involved in selling off rare wildlife secretly. She is then off to Nepal for a short visit to help out there. The FBI managed to crack the illegal wildlife selling ring and the RACC think that everything must be all over with now and are trying to get the conservation centre back into the red, finding out a large tract of land between them and the neighbouring farm, actually belongs to RACC and wasn’t sold as previously thought. Elise Butler, the new RACC director, applies for various grants and wants to use the land to restore it for native species and to expand animal habitats for the centre. Now all of this is underway and the FBI investigation is over, Elise has the funds to offer Dr V a full time veterinarian post at the centre, which after some consideration, she accepts.

Veronica and Kai have known each other for years, as she has been contracted to work for them part time by her employer. With her always travelling, she has never tried to take it any further, but also has no idea he likes her as more than a friend, as he connects with animals better than he does with people! Being in one place allows Veronica to finally have a pet of her own, she ends up fostering a puppy, Luna, from the Riverbend K-9 department, who needs just a bit more training to get through his first set of tests for the new wildlife detection program, sharing daytime care with Elise, who is missing her previous trainee dog. A town organised tidy up and trail path creation is set up for one of their weekends off, and Veronica and Kai get there early to set everything up, only to be surprised by a mountain lion, which is not normal in this area. Strange after two bobcats were found injured in the area, as well as two humans! They put up trail cams on part of the route in form the road, but there is still a large area that is overgrown and unexplored. Not that they are supposed to go in alone! Elise’s boyfriend is FBI Agent Finn Cooper and he is still not happy with what has been happening on the tract of land. Too late, Veronica and Kai find out that there is still something going on there and they are caught up in the danger, with someone that will do anything to get away with their evil plan!

Luna manages to steal lots of the show, as do the other K-9’s and even Kai’s kitten Sunny! Love finally gets its chance to grow between these two dedicated professionals, whose love of wildlife and caring for animals had almost left them living lives as lone individuals. A huge group of characters come together to help the centre and make the most of the land and working with this wonderful new wildlife detection programme with the puppies! Most of the town are behind them, including local businesses and even the mayor. A suspicious wound pattern left on one of the wounded men left Dr V and agent Finn wondering if something else might have been behind it, but she hadn’t seen any larger animals on the land, nor were any native to this area. When they finally uncover what has been happening under their very noses, all becomes clear! Nice to see how the RACC personnel all work so well with the FBI, and the Riverbend K-9 department, as well as lots of different vets to keep their animals well and all those found in the area in need of treatment. Interesting situations and well experienced staff in all areas. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

RIVERBEND K-9S:
These books are standalones but the introduction of characters and spoilers makes reading them in order better but not necessary. Clean. No vulgar language or cursing. No sex. No graphic violence or injuries. Source for all books: BookSprout.

A Nose for Mischief, #1 - Pleasantly surprised how good this story is and the good characters, both two- and four-legged, are likeable and believable. Easy to read with interesting story lines and a touch of romance made a quick read. 4*

An Ear For Trouble, #2 - This is an interesting, easy to read story with a consistent pace, good characters, interesting story lines and plenty of animals. I like the author's writing style and the dialog of the characters and the humor spread throughout the pages. 4*

A Whisper of Suspicion, #3 - Interesting story especially with the major topic. It is good how each featured fostered puppy has different talents in each book. A good mix of intrigue, zoolife and romance in at a good pace made this a quick and easy read. 4*

Veronica Perry is a wildlife veterinarian who is on the rotation of vets who cover duties at RACC - Riverbend Animal Conservation Center in Indiana. When she is given an offer by RACC to lead their veterinary team, Veronica wonders if she can get used to a less nomadic life. Everyone in Riverbend is so nice and accommodating she decides to give it a try. She also gets to foster a dog - Luna - and train her in wildlife detection.

Someone or something attacks a couple of people on the new RACC property dedicated to land conservancy. Veronica and Kai, the RACC zookeeper, do some investigating, especially with the increase in injured bobcats and bobcat sightings. What is going on? Who is trespassing on RACC property?

This is the third book in the Riverbend K-9s series and can be read as a stand-alone novel. I can't wait for the next one!.

How can you not love a mystery with animals and a little romance too? Finally Kai and Veronica find their HEA while trying to figure out what’s really going on with the property surrounding the center. The fact that the setting is in Indiana, a state that I’m very familiar with makes this story even better (in my humble opinion).

This series is so unique because it deals with the intricacies of helping wild animals within an animal clinic setting and all that goes with that kind of operation. The author does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the story with great dialogue so you can visualize the conflicts the characters deal with in the quest to not only solve a mystery, but do what’s right. I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series!.

Dr. Veronica is a vet who travels the world to support endangered species. She is temporarily working at a conservation center (RACC) in Riverbend, IN as their vet is no longer available. She is called in early to help a badly injured bobcat. Kai, the head zookeeper, has worked with Dr. V before & is happy she is joining their team. They are working together to restore additional land for RACC for wildlife when they find disturbing traps & injured animals & work together to stop the attacks. Absorbing mystery with wildlife & puppies.

Dr. Veronica Perry is a traveling wildlife veterinarian. She is offered a permanent position at the Riverbend Animal Conservation Center in Indiana and she accepts. The RACC just received a land conservancy which she is helping to re-wild, but strange things are happening. There are attacks on two people on that land. Is it being done by wild animals or is there some nefarious crimes being committed? Will Dr. V. get to the bottom of these attacks before someone else is hurt or killed? This book had me hooked from the first page, and I am looking forward to reading the rest in this series.

Perfect mystery with some romance thrown in. We are back in Riverbend and we have the RACC has found out the own land outside of the zoo. Stuff starts to happen on the land, wildlife that has not been seen in the area show up injured. Then a possible animal attack. Everyone is starting to believe that the RACC is cursed. This story centers on Kai and now full time vet Veronica. It also has more wildlife running around. Loved it and I hope there is more to come.

I loved being back in Riverbend and seeing everyone again from Dr V, Kai and Elise etc and not only do we have a vast array of animals including Roberta the bobcat and a new puppy, but also uncovering more things RACC was lied to about by the last director.
It's like seeing old friends again you have women who are smart and independent surrounded by genuine friends and co workers as well as a good mystery that needs solving with a sprinkle of danger so you can't go wrong!.

The story kept me reading to finish it in one sitting so that's a good thing. I found this outing of the Riverbend K-9s to be more focused on the human romance rather than the ups and downs of training a working dog so my interest did flag a little by the time the end was reached.

Overall the plot line was good, the villain was easy to figure out as well as what they were trying to accomplish. The working dog didn't get to shine as much in this outing but apart from that it was an enjoyable read.

Such a fun series! I've read the first three books in less than a month and am on the hunt for book #4. Love the unique K-9 angle and the emphasis on wildlife conservation which I don't find often enough in my fiction.

Not quite a cozy mystery and not strictly a romance -- a delicious blend of both. Lots of cozy vibes from the small town and the recurring appearances of some memorable secondary characters from book to book. The mystery is expertly woven throughout the cozy vibes and the romance (eep, sweet friends to more!) Hoping for many more books in the series.

Wild Animals and Crime Fighters
This very good story is the third book in a series. As with most series, it is always best to read them in order to understand the background nuances. This book can be read independently of the others and still greatly enjoyed. If you enjoy mysteries with lots of action and dogs and wild animals, you will love this book!

Wonderful book with entertaining characters. Sometimes the journey to romance is unexpected and unplanned. There are a few twists and turns in this story that are very unexpected. Love the use of animals in a story. Good read.

Dr V finally explored her options at RACC

can she handle the possibilities that arise being more frequently around the animals, her friends, and a certain keeper?

new training possibilities also pop up on multiple fronts

critters, crimes, community and possible romance make for mildly humorous and intriguing reading

This was a really good mystery but I do recommend reading the 1st 2 books in the series before this one like I did. The events in those books were mentioned frequently enough that I kept thinking "What are they talking about?" and that I wished that I had read them in chronological order like I normally would.

Easy to guess though still a nice read

It was easy to guess what was going on with all the "mysterious" things happening. Nevertheless, the story is nice, the characters are charming, and there are animals. What else do you need?

I like the characters and the storyline. The narrator did a good job. But the book was not fast-paced enough for me so I occasionally found myself a little bored.
