Ariadne Winter is staying at the Ivy Tree Inn covering a wedding heralded as must be covered by Ladies Lifestyle Magazine. Ariadne is focused on her task but when a body appears, she tries to uncover who is the guilty party as well taking her shot for reporting on more than fashion and weddings.
I really enjoyed this one, I could easily visualize this story and it was filled with twists and turns. I have always been a fan of this era and this story was rich with description to help the reader imagine the story unfold. Will be checking out more from this author, delightful read.
It’s definitely intriguing. When one decides to jump into Ink and intrigue, have an open mood id ls the out everything that’s going on. The author brings us into a world where all bets are off and the need gossip. Told from the point of view of plenty of characters, gives the book a new perspective of the case. In a male dominated profession and journal everyone looks over her for a journal you feel. Ariadne made it a point to get answers but at work expects it to be someone other than her. Answers that everyone feels that she’s a woman that she should let it all go. That’s a men’s profession. An investigation of a dead body that created more enemies than friends. Did it put her life in danger? Does she uncover who did it? Investigation journalism is the dream, will this be the moment she achieves it. A book I feel was good but I missed some things. A book I feel I may need to read again to get the whole picture. In saying that, I say take your time while reading, you don’t want to miss anything. But it’s well worth the read.
Ariadne Winter is a young journalist trying to break into the men's world of investigative journalism but has to settle for being a feature writer at a prestigious women's magazine. With the help of her Aunt Ruby, she gets the scoop on an interview with glamorous actress, Donna Cutter, who is making her last movie before marrying a prince from a small European country. Grace Kelly is brought to mind and there are definite parallels. The guesthouse she is staying in has several other guests, most of whom were friends with the owner Frank's mother and appear to be staying at the newly reopened place as a favour to her. Not everything is as it seems and we are treated to several interesting interactions between the guests, not to mention the staff, which includes Johnny, Frank's half-brother; Maria, the cook and old friend of Frank, and her son Edward. The first 2/3rd of the book sets up the story and motivations for the murder that happens, in the style of Agatha Christie. All in all, it is a very enjoyable cozy mystery set in the late 50s.
This book was so much fun to read. The characters are well developed and has you wanting to learn more about them. I really enjoyed the fact that there is a strong female lead character and other strong female supporting characters given the time period this book is set in. Every character is under suspicion and I couldn’t wait to find out who the true killer was. Ms. Butler has you guessing till the end in this historic who done it.
Ariadne's passion is investigative journalism. While she is supposed to be covering the wedding of the century, stumbling upon a body could be her big break. However, to solve the mystery, she finds herself entangled in a web of lies, secrets, betrayal, and deceit, with a multitude of suspects. Will she catch the killer before they catch her? Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is the first book in the Ariadne Winter Mystery Historical Cozy Mystery series, a murder mystery filled with suspense, drama, danger, and more. It's unpredictable, thrilling, and sprinkled with humour. The story will keep you smiling at times and your heart racing at others. I was completely absorbed in this tale. Ellen is known for her compelling female lead characters in perilous situations striving to right wrongs. The great characters and numerous surprises make for an engaging journey. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, then Ellen is the author for you.
In Ink and Intrigue, Ellen Butler transports readers to 1958 with a story brimming with suspense, vintage charm, and a forward-thinking protagonist who defies societal expectations. Ariadne Winter is no typical reporter for Ladies’ Lifestyle Magazine; her ambition is to break out of the fluff pieces and write hard-hitting investigative journalism. Butler crafts a clever, energetic character who doesn’t conform to the stereotypical female roles of her time—she’s fashionable, independent, and fiercely determined, making her an endearing heroine for readers to root for.
Set against the sophisticated backdrop of the Ivy Tree Inn, where Hollywood glamor meets royal intrigue, the novel introduces Ariadne’s assignment: an interview with a Hollywood starlet poised for a high-profile royal marriage. However, her focus shifts dramatically when she stumbles upon a dead body, an event that unlocks her long-suppressed dream of investigating stories with real weight. This discovery sets off a chain of events that thrusts her into a tangled web of secrets, motives, and suspects within the inn’s charming yet mysterious walls.
Butler’s writing shines in her portrayal of the Ivy Tree Inn, which feels alive with hidden stories and complex characters. The inn serves as more than just a backdrop; it becomes a character in itself, enhancing the book’s moody and suspenseful atmosphere. Each guest and staff member harbors secrets, and Butler masterfully weaves these details into a mystery that deepens with each page, keeping the reader guessing until the end.
Ariadne’s quick thinking, resourcefulness, and courage stand out, especially within the context of the era’s restrictive gender norms. Butler uses the time period not just for nostalgic detail, but to explore themes of ambition, independence, and the professional struggles of women in male-dominated fields. Readers feel Ariadne’s tension between her professional dreams and societal pressures, adding depth to her character and making her journey to uncover the truth all the more compelling.
Overall, Ink and Intrigue is a delightful mystery that combines classic whodunit elements with social commentary and humor. Ellen Butler’s engaging writing, attention to historical detail, and strong, relatable protagonist make this novel a page-turner, especially for those who love historical mysteries with a feminist twist. It’s a thrilling read that will leave readers eagerly awaiting more of Ariadne Winter’s adventures.
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is the first book in the new Ariadne Winter Murder Mystery series by Ellen Butler. I was so excited when I saw Ms. Butler had a new series coming out and couldn’t wait for this book to hit my Kindle. I have read all of Ms. Butler’s books (so far)- and her Karina Cardinal Mystery series is a definite favourite, so I was very intrigued to see what this new mystery series would bring. It is a little different from the Karina Cardinal series, as this is an historical cozy mystery series- set in 1958. It also gave me Agatha Christie vibes. Again, as with the KCM series, Ms. Butler has cleverly constructed her story, imbuing it with plenty of intrigue and tension, but also setting the scene in keeping with the times. Everything from the cultural/societal norms of the times, language, fashion, transportation, and ‘daily life’, as well as the clever mystery and intriguing developments, are all given Ms. Butler’s meticulous attention to detail- resulting in a rich and immersive reading experience. Ariadne Winter dreams of being a hard-nose investigative reporter, but being a young woman means that she isn’t taken seriously and is dismissed and overlooked for her male counterparts. So she ends up taking a job with a ladies magazine in the hopes that it will open the door to more ‘interesting’ positions. Opportunity presents itself when she is given a new assignment…. an exclusive interview with a Hollywood movie star who is about to marry a European prince (think Grace Kelly and Prince Ranier type situation). Ariadne recognizes that this is a huge opportunity and sets off to spend the week at the Ivy Tree Inn, to be on hand with the actress, to get all the facts to compile her story. But right from the beginning, Ariadne begins to notice that there is something strange going on at the inn, and things only get more puzzling the longer she’s there. Before the week has even ended, she has a murder to contend with. But getting to the bottom of things might just put her in the crosshairs of the murderer. What happens here makes for a wonderfully intriguing read… I can’t wait to see what Ariadne gets up to next. Bring on Book #2! Happy Reading…
INK AND INTRIGUE AT IVY TREE INN by Ellen Butler The First Ariadne Winter Mystery
Ariadne Winter dreams of being an investigative reporter as she works for Ladies’ Lifestyle Magazine. It may not be a crime beat, but thanks to Aunt Ruby's connections she has the opportunity of a lifetime. Traveling to Rhode Island, Ariadne will get to interview a Hollywood star who's about to marry a real prince in what's being called the "Wedding of the Century"! Staying at the Ivy Tree Inn she soon discovers anger simmering amongst the other guests and staff. Problems seem to be plaguing the inn and someone has leaked a secret about the future princess. Then murder strikes. A dead body may be bad news for some, but for Ariadne it could open up a whole new career, if it doesn't kill her first.
INK AND INTRIGUE AT IVY TREE INN is told from multiple points of view. Indeed, almost everyone has a chapter devoted to their perspective. While this method does give more insight into the characters, as you see their views on the situation, it takes away a sense of continuity. The majority of the story is told from Ariadne's point of view, but by reading all the other characters thoughts about her, I lost a sense of closeness and had a difficult time relating to and even liking her. Instead of the protagonist she was more like just another character with issues. The person I really liked was Aunt Ruby. She was a definite scene stealer and I'm much more interested in her!
I enjoyed going back in time to 1958 noticing all the differences you don't see today, typewriters, rotary phones with long cords, and, notably, almost everyone smoking. Sadly, some things are just as prevalent today, such as the difficulty women journalists face due to their gender.
INK AND INTRIGUE AT IVY TREE INN captures the historical flavor of the United States in the late 1950s and creates a compelling mystery whose characters are full of resentment and secrets.
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is an historical cozy mystery full of intrigue, drama, mystery suspense, tension, and scandal. The story is set in 1958 and centers around the character of a young woman named Ariadne Winter. Ariadne dreams of being an investigative reporter but due to societal norms of the time she is unable to do so because jobs like that are given exclusively to men. Instead, she takes a job with a lady's magazine thinking that it might open the door to other opportunities for her in the future. Her work with the prestigious women's magazine combined with the help of her aunt Ruby leads her to get the inside scoop on an exclusive interview with a well-known famous actress. The interview leads her to the Ivy Tree Inn where the actress is staying along with several other guests. As Ariadne settles in, she notices that the other guests seem a bit odd and that there are weird things going on. When a murder occurs, she knows that she needs to get to the bottom of who the murderer is, but this might prove difficult because every guest at the Ivy Tree Inn is a suspect.
This was another fabulously written book by this talented author. I loved her previous series, the Karina Cardinal Mysteries, and the Brass Compass Series, so I was excited to read her newest series. The characters were well developed, and I especially loved the character of the female MC. Ariadne was strong, smart, witty, talented, and determined. She did not let anything get in her way or stop her from pursuing her dreams. This was a great cozy mystery that will have you guessing right up until the very end as to who the killer really is.
Alright prologue, sucking me right in. I struggled to find a favorite character, and throughout the book it was probably Edward. I really expected there to actually be more flirtation between Ariadne and Johnny because of a few of their interactions and then there were other times where I felt like I couldn’t really get a read on him. He has a solid desire to help those around him. He has goals and even though his relationship with his half-brother Frank is tense, he does his best to accomplish what needs done without too much squabbling. But obviously feels slighted by Frank. Edward is just simply adorable. He is smart and caring, working at the Inn and helping his mother. He is really trying to make a name for himself both in sports and in studies. Kitty intrigued me, as she’s acquaintances with the other ladies staying at the Innb it doesn’t seem to really be close with anyone. Dottie and Connie almost gang up on her a few times with the ways that they act. They all seem to be doing Frank a favor by staying at his newly opened Inn, And Ariadne is the outsider, as she doesn’t know any of them previously. However, Aunt Ruth knows everyone. She is really the glue, being a hair dresser and salon owner in town, she knows everyone’s backstory and all the most recent gossip Plus she’s stylish and Ariadne’s biggest fan. Oh and Gavin, what a sweet guy. I loved the multiple points of view and learning more about the characters and their interactions in that way.
I look forward to reading more about Ariadne’s story and am excited for more books in the series.

Does Ariadne figure it out or will stuff be used against her, will have to read the book to find out. If you like historical and cozy mysteries this is a book for you. Great storyline, great characters, I give this book 4 stars.
This was quite a delight to read. It is different from other cozies that I have read, as it seems more "proper." Considering the time frame, it isn't too surprising. It is a time when women and men dressed every day. No jeans, sweats, or yoga pants!
The murder doesn't happen until about 60% of the way through the book. But don't discount that first 60% because it sets up the characters, backstory, and possible motives once the murder occurs. The last 40% of the book flies by as Ariadne deciphers the clues and solves the crime for the police. It is very similar to Agatha Christie's novels, and the author mentions that in her notes.
I really enjoyed the storyline that brought Ariadne to this town. It is a take on Grace Kelly's story, and I was amazed to learn that she had to pay a dowry to the family she married into. It is in the author's notes, so make sure to read those at the end.
There are several people to suspect as the murderer, and I didn't quite figure it out. I should have based on a few clues and comments littered throughout the story. I have to say that Edward, the young man, was a character. He is whip-smart, and I can only imagine what he might accomplish once he grows up.
I enjoyed reading this book, and I look forward to more in this series. We give it 4 paws up.
This is a really enjoyable cosy mystery. It is also the first book in the Ariadne Winter series. The author does an incredible job of writing a story that is gripping from the start. Another thing I love is that this story is told from multiple characters point of view which really helps to give the reader a complete understanding of the events. Ariadne Winter arrives at Ivy Tree Inn with one goal in mind to get the interview with the actress and soon to be princess. This is her first step at being an journalist and nothing is going to stop her. That is until she finds a dead body at the Ivy Tree Inn. Now Ariadne has more than just an interview on her mind, she is now going to discover who the murderer is. With every person staying at the Inn a potential suspect and with each person having links to the other guests this won't be an easy task. Will Ariadne be able to solve this murder or will she be placing herself in danger by investigating and asking questions that someone doesnt want asked. I really enjoyed this story the twists and turns were so good that I couldn't guess who the murderer was until the end which for me is a great story. I look forward to reading more from this author.
As soon as I read the brief for this story, it just reminded me of my favorite board game and I definitely had to give it a try! Although the story was set in 1958, their language at times reminded me of the 1920s. Fresh faced journalist, Ariadne Winter, gets her first opportunity at a story interviewing a famous actress for the magazine she works for, Ladies’ Lifestyle Magazine. She travels to the Ivy Tree Inn upstate to get this exclusive story and meets a plethora of wealthy people. With the assortment of the wealthy come to light many stories of betrayal, lost loves, frenemies, etc. It appears civil and kind but mysteries only deepen when more is found out. Opportunity strikes for Ariadne, as her passion is investigative journalism but bad luck in finding someone murdered. Now the search is on for whodunit and high alerts are on everyone as a possible suspect. Unfortunately in the midst of narrowing down suspects, her deadline for the magazine is soon to come. She is met with the challenge of what to do in this case. This story reminded me of a cozy mystery book and was hooked from the first page. Very entertaining read!
An enjoyable and engaging cozy mystery which kept me hooked throughout. Being an aspiring female reporter during 1958, when the workforce is predominantly male is not easy for Ariadne Winter. As a writer for ‘Ladies’ Lifestyle Magazine’ she is sent to stay at the Ivy Tree Inn, to interview a Hollywood starlet whose royal marriage is hailed as the "Wedding of the Century." When Ariadne discovers a dead body she sees the opportunity to prove she could be the investigative reporter she dreams of being. As she investigates the lives of the inn’s inhabitants she discovers intertwined relationships along with long buried secrets amongst both guests and staff. With a murderer on the loose and multiple possible suspects Ariadne must both solve the murder and make her magazine deadline. The descriptive narrative brought both the characters and the setting vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the storyline. The plot twists kept me guessing as to the stories outcome and I found it to be a real page turner.
Ink and Intrigue at the Ivy Tree Inn is an Ariadne Winter Mystery. Ariadne is a young reporter who aspires to investigative journalism but is working her way up at a women’s magazine. She gets an opportunity for a big interview, then finds an even bigger opportunity when she discovers a body.
I like the 1950s setting of this story and there’s a great cast of supporting characters. It’s fun learning how everyone’s connected and what dirt they have on each other. If you’re a fan of gossip, you’ll enjoy discovering what history different characters have with each other and how that’s motivating them now.
The perspective shifts from Ariadne’s first person to a third person that gives the perspectives of different characters, including some of what they’re thinking. This is interesting as it means we have some information Ariadne does not as we try to work out what really happened.
This book gets four stars from me. I have enjoyed other books by this author and would recommend this to fans of her work, as well as readers looking for another historical mystery to solve!

Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn (Ariadne Winter Mystery Series) by Ellen Butler - Review by Amanda Gray
I would recommend this book, it’s a fun read. I no longer read mysteries intent on trying to figure it out, rather let the story unfold, for me it makes for a more enjoyable read. The set up for this book is interesting, each chapter from a different character’s point of view, and there are quite a few characters. The protagonist is Ariadane Winter, personally, I always love a feisty female lead! Ariadane is witty, intelligent and has a very curious mind, writing for a woman’s magazine, while she’d much rather cover ‘real’ news, but that was very much a man’s world. Ariadane finds a way to solve the mystery and make her way into covering the kind of stories SHE wants to write!
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn, Ariadne Winter Mystery Series, Ellen Butler, Review, Itsy Bitsy Book Bits, Cozy Mystery, Amanda Gray, October 2024
Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024 It's the winter of 1958, and our heroine, Ariadne (Greek "Most Holy") is a fresh ingénue chafing to transition her writing skills from the fluff pieces of Ladies Lifestyle Magazine to investigative journalism. Her editor sends her on a week-long quest to obtain an interview with the lovely Donna Morgan, a Grace Kelly-esque star who is set to marry the prince of a small European nation. Intrigue follows as the journalistic relationship with the star is established and immediately tested.
Simultaneously, young Ariadne is thrust into the midst of intrigue and murder at the Ivy Tree Inn, the establishment where her aunt has booked her stay. It seems that everyone she has contact with at the Inn has some sort of deep, dark secret. All come crashing to a head when the establishment's proprietor winds up dead. Who did it - the guest with a long-standing hatred for the manager's mother? The couple to whom the deceased owed money. It is up to the hapless police and our heroine to solve the mystery.
Unfolding from multiple perspectives the story moves at a fairly rapid pace and is occasionally a bit bogged down with too much detail. However, if you are looking for a cozy mystery to fill a winter day, this will fit the bill.
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn (Ariadne Winter Mystery Series) by Ellen Butler. I love this fun historical mystery. Its set in late 50's and our main character is Ariadne who is wanting to be a investigative reporter which at the time is a men's world. While working at a woman's magazine she gets the scoop of a Prince marrying a commoner which is hot news. Her Aunt lives in the town she is traveling to so her aunt gets her a room at the Ivy Tree Inn. The Ivy Tree Inn is a happening place. All of the guest at the Inn are related to the owner and while Ariadne can't not be a reporter she begins to listen to all of them realizing she might have a story here as well. When mysterious things begin to happen on the property of the Inn she really gets intrigued and then a murder happens and she is in the middle of it. Will this be what breaks her into the world of real investigative reporting? This is a cute, historical, cozy mystery that will keep you turning pages late into the Night!
Ariadne Winter is on an assignment writing for Ladies' Lifestyle Magazine. A Hollywood starlet is about to marry into royalty and it is being dubbed as "Wedding of the Century." Ariadne however dreams of being an investigative reporter. The opportunity has unexpectedly presented itself when she discovers a body. As she pries into the lives of the Inn's residents she finds a lot of complex and intertwined relationships and secrets. But which one of them committed the crime? As her deadline approaches she is on the verge of possibly losing her job. However, she is also on the verge of becoming a well known investigative reporter if she can just figure out who the killer is. I enjoyed the plot and storyline of this book. While it did take a while before the crime occurred, it was a great build up and background of the characters and what their roles were going to be as the case moved along.
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is a cozy mystery set in the 1950s which is interesting. Things were definitely different back then especially for women in the workplace. Ariadne Winter is excited to write an article for a ladies magazine about the wedding of a commoner to a Prince. Ariadne gets to interview Donna Morgan, the commoner bride, which really adds to the story. The Chapters bounce between Ariadne's point of view and many of the other characters's points of view. It helped tell the story but it's unusual and it took a little getting used to. One of the people at the Ivy Tree Inn ends up dead and the other guests and staff are the suspects. Ariadne has some secrets to sort through to find the culprit. I liked Ariadne once the story got going and her Aunt Ruby was a good character. This was an enjoyable cozy mystery. #InkAndIntrigueAtIvyTreeInn #AnAriadneWinterMystery #PowerToThePen
Ink and Intrigue at the Ivy Inn by Ellen Butler - 4 stars
In 1958 Ariadne Winter is inspiring to become a reporter for a renowned newspaper in a time where it is not common for women. She has been given the chance to write about the Wedding of the Century when a Hollywood starlet is marrying a prince and they only want Ariadne to cover it. Will Adriane get the story she is wanting or will the suspicion guests at Ivy Inn and the dead body start her in the path of her true dreams?
I gave 4 stars because this read was a little slow for me to begin with. I liked how all the characters were suspicious from the start though and how everything added up. No one is innocent when Winter is on the prowl! I was not really expecting who actually did the deed. I would read more of the Adriane Winter mysteries.
Ink and Intrigue was such a fun book to read as I am jumping back into my favorite things to do read! I love a great mystery and this book does not disappoint. Ariadne is on task to complete her work as a journalist at a tough time in our past for women, during the late 1950s. I love that the book is set in the past and is so very well written and gives me a glimpse into a time where I was not born yet. Ariadne is almost ironically covering a royal wedding, but finds herself in a new setting when a body is found. I watch investigative series all the time so when I realized that this was the path the book was going on I was so excited, them the author had me hooked with the style of writing. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book which was so rewarding! This is a great book and I really look forward to reading more from this author!
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is the first book in the new Ariadne Winter Murder Mystery series by Ellen Butler. I was so excited when I saw Ms. Butler had a new series coming out and couldn’t wait for this book to hit my Kindle. Ellen Butler is a first time author for me, but I can't wait to read more of her books! Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn is a cozy mystery full of drama, intrigue, secrets, murder, and a nod to historical events. The world building is great, allowing the reader to be transported to 1958, where our strong main character, Ariadne Winter, finds herself in the middle of a reunion of sorts. The other guests at the Ivy Tree Inn are all connected to the owner. The characters are all realistic, believable, and oddly lovable. The story did start off a bit slow, but picked up fairly quickly. Overall, a great, medium-paced read, full of interesting characters, many secrets to be had, and lots of twists and turn. I was left guessing till the very end! I look forward to reading more books by Ellen Butler.
This book was such a great read! Ariadne is the girl trying to get a job in a man’s world, as an investigative reporter. She’s at a women's magazine and scores the scoop on the commoner marrying the Prince!
Little does she know the article she went to write won’t be her only one and she’s in for a ride! Her aunt gets her a room at the local Inn. Ariadne can’t turn off her reporter instincts while at the Inn. She is on the property with a few other couples that are all old friends.
When things start happening on the property Ariadne finds herself knee deep in trying to find out who is behind the mysterious happenings… then a murder happens.
Will she solve it before the police? Will this get her the write up in a prestigious paper that she wants? Will she become the investigative reporter she wants to be?
Ink and Intrigue at Ivy Tree Inn was an action packed book that I'm glad to have read. The cover did not draw me in, and had it not been for reading this author previously, I likely wouldn't have picked this book up. There were a lot of characters with overlapping history and at first I had a hard time keeping them straight. I still don't know how to pronounce the main character's name! We know early on there is a death but don't know who was the victim or who committed the crime. I think the author did a good job of slowly uncovering the story and maintaining the mystery until the end. I was quite invested in seeing how it ended and be sure to read to the verrrry end. I was fascinated when I read the pages after the story concluded, and learned the story is loosely based on historical events and people. Not that I have any idea who they are, but still fun to learn.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the opportunity to read this book!
This was a great mystery! I loved the main character and her detective abilities. There was definitely alot of intrigue in this book, I could never quite figure out who was the bad guy! I think the author did a great job of keeping the reader guessing. I liked the multiple POVs, it really helped tell each character's story.
I loved the author's note too! The actress in book was based on Grace Kelly which was really interesting to learn about her history!
I really wanted to learn more about what happened to everyone at the end and that is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. I felt like it ended rather abruptly after the end of the mystery. Overall, I enjoyed this quick read and loved all the characters.
There is a book 2, so maybe then we will get some more information! Looking forward to that!
This is not a typical read for me, but if you are looking for a low key murder mystery this one's for you!! There is no blood and gore or anything that could be triggering for anyone that is wanting to venture into the murder mystery reading genre.
I loved how Ellen Butler kept me flipping the pages just to find out who did what!! This book is full of characters and you have to pay attention because there is mischief around every corner. The setting is in the late 50’s and the main character, Ariadne is a journalist doing an article on an actress, soon-to-be-princess.
What Ariadne doesn’t know, she is staying right inside a live hornets nest at the Ivy Tree Inn.
