A story of tragedy and triumph, love and war. The long-awaited sequel to Light and Shadows, begins in 1922 during the Asia Minor Genocide, when Maria, a twelve-year-old Greek Orthodox girl, witnesses what she believes is the total massacre of her family in Smyrna.
Although haunted by the death of her family, Maria grows up to be a spirited, independent-minded archeologist. In 1941, as Germany invades Greece, Maria falls in love with Rob, an English spy. She is recruited by British intelligence, and Maria and Rob become entangled in the dangerous world of espionage. The story races from the Battle of Crete, to the colorful streets of Cairo, and then to the horrific Nazi occupation of Greece and the almost total annihilation of the Greek Jews. With fierce determination, Maria embraces her role as a spy fighting against Nazi barbarism.

totally engrossing
I couldn’t put this down until I finished. The historical background is horrifying, especially in light of the world we are living in today. The story was a beautiful trip through unspeakably horrid times.
And a part of history I knew nothing about.
I first reread the first two books in the trilogy. A remarkably engrossing series.

A compelling read
This is a compelling work of historical fiction with strong characters and a good plot. The skipping ahead in time towards the end was kind of disorientating, but still recommended for fans of the genre.
