"Through Anguish" is a short story about a man named Zaren, whose wife and children were killed. Having sunk into a spiral of depression, all he wants to do is die and join them--but his village will not let him. His own negativity affects them and all they want is that he becomes whole once more.
As much as I enjoyed the writing style and the character, I was quite surprised when I got to the end of the story and found that there was no more! For me, the decision that Zaren makes happens a bit fast--I didn't see quite enough healing during the story. This feels like a teaser for a novel-length story about Zaren, and I'll admit, I am intrigued to read more about him. As a short story in itself, however, it doesn't quite hold up in terms of conflict-resolution. However, Taylor does a good job at tugging at our heartstrings for Zaren. I felt myself trying to cheer him up (of course, he couldn't hear me.)
