Betrayal is the only truth, and tyrants are gods and martyrs.
In a world of prestige and darkness, dictated by the Triad—a formidable alliance of crime families wielding power through cruelty and bloodshed—adapting is not a choice; it’s my only means of survival.
But the most formidable challenge is the man who reigns above us all.
His reputation precedes him. He is said to be ruthless and sadistic, an entity of darkness. A beautiful monster masterfully playing human.
Nothing could be further from the truth. He’s far more terrifying.
And in the cruelest twist of fate, I’ve become his.
This is the prequel to the upcoming Maelstrom Duology, a dark romance with romantasy elements. Some content may be upsetting or triggering. A TW has been included in each book and entails what can be expected throughout the duet. Reader Discretion is highly advised
Don’t buy this expecting the next book. I quit buying Natalie Bennett’s books (which I really enjoyed btw) because I would preorder books and more often than not publication was delayed. And delayed. If you’re okay with delays then try it. I only got this on Unlimited to leave this warning. I might try again if when the others books are released if I live that long.
Loved the story, the characters were great and I loved the main characters. The only thing I didn't like is that the story is too short. I love when a book is about 300 pages long. In my opinion when the story is too short , that means the story won't be as entertaining and you know more than likely you'll have to wait awhile for part two.
I did like the story, but it was entirely too short. Like a ton of detail just to be short and concise. So 3 stars for me, because I felt like this story could have been riveting had it been about 300-500 pages. The characters and the pace at which this story moved felt more like an outline to a story before you write it in its entirety. It could have been soooo much better.
I am definitely invested when the series comes out. There was a bit if confusion for me when it got weird and too futuristic slightly alien vibes. Maybe that will be revealed later or was just a moment. Otherwise I cannot wait to see how she handles her new life.

There is a lot of good bits here. But there were issues for me. While descriptive, I felt like it was either too wordy or not focused. And I think there are really good bones here for a great dark series. But that this first installment focused on maybe too many things while also not enough.
