Hilltops: Italy beyond the tourist trail

Rate this book
Another fascinating journey from best-selling travel writer - David Gardner. Follow David and Wendy as they explore the less-traveled hilltop towns of Tuscany and Umbria. In this journey, they seek an Italy beyond the tourist loop, taking a deep-dive into two distinct and historic regions where life slows and community thrives. These are places that have survived and flourished throughout millennia, maintaining their traditional roots. Travel with this couple as they move beyond the sanitised snapshots to uncover what it means to be Italian in these small, close-knit communities. It is in such places that the visitor can slow down, open up to more meaningful experiences and understand what the Art of Travel really means.

Fantastic read. Well-written and humorous, and could really feel the passion and love of the places talked about by the author which made it feel as though I was on their journey with them. Highly recommended!

What a delightful, funny, and informative read. I particularly enjoyed the incredible history of the hilltop villages and towns shared by the author. Would highly recommend this to anyone planning or even dreaming about a trip to Tuscany and/or Umbria.

A really good read if you are looking for inspiration for your next overseas adventure (and to learn a bit about the culture and history along the way!)

This is a beautifully written and thoughtful insight into exploring Italy on a deeper level than the standard track. Makes me want to go back and do it properly.

I’ve just finished the latest in this travel series and enjoyed it even more than the others. This was a great in depth look at these two areas and made me really keen to explore them off the beaten track. It’s funny and warm, but more than anything the author’s love for these areas shines through. A very enjoyable read!
