In 2046, as global temperatures continue to climb, scientists decide to duplicate the massive eruption of the Krakatoa Volcano in 1883. This eruption sent enough ash and dust into the atmosphere to cause a drop in global temperatures for several years. In what is called the Krakatoa Project, numerous hydrogen bombs are placed in shafts dug deep within the base of a currently inactive volcano on Ascension Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The bombs are detonated, causing a massive eruption that seems likely to achieve the objective of the project. However, the eruption also produces a tsunami that has a considerable impact all along the rim of the Atlantic Ocean. This story is told from the viewpoint of a young man whose mother is involved in the Krakatoa Project.
