The Origami Deception

Rate this book
Two small-time journalists take on an international cartel who try a hostile takeover of a Canadian mining company.

Lucas, a veteran journalist, sees a big story brewing within a strike at a local mining company when explosions rip through the plant, but he gets bumped by Jamie, a junior reporter. To keep his finger in the pie, he agrees to mentor the new journalist while following a second story about a sex-worker found half beaten to death.

As the attacks escalate, the two must work together to determine if this is a global threat or the first volley in an international trade war. As the clues of both stories add up, they realize that there is a common link, and they race for the full picture before more attacks take place. One thing is for certain, the mining company, the city, and the country are mere pawns, in a game that could kill thousands unless they can expose the truth and avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

David’s best novel yet! Focuses on the mining industry in Northern Ontario during a strike by the miners . Suddenly horrible destruction happens realizing someone is trying to destroy the building hoping to buy it for pennies. What you don’t realize is the depths of foreign interference and how far they go. Makes you think?

The Origami Deception was quite the thrill ride. As two journalists - one a season veteran and the other a rookie - tackle the investigation of attacks at a local mining company, they are thrust right into the action while working to uncover links to a secondary story about a physical attack on a sex worker. The two main characters' determination to find the truth and protect the town's residents made them easily likable, and I really enjoyed reading about their growing relationship. The descriptions were well-written, and as someone from Sudbury, I was really able to envision myself at the scene (and of course, leaving with a new fear unlocked of something similar happening here). An amazing thriller you won't want to put down!

You know it's a good thrill when you don't understand what's going on at the beginning.
That method of telling a story and presenting a web of events is the best way to get me attached and interested in the story.
I saw another review here saying that this novel will leave me with a new perspective and mindset about how I read and analyze the news I read, and it indeed did!
10 out 10, I'd definitely add it to the list of books I recommend to someone when I get asked about thrill books

Origami Deception is a masterful blend of intrigue, suspense, and heart-pounding action. From the very first chapter, the story captivates with its crisp prose and skillful storytelling. The plot is layered and engaging, filled with unexpected twists that keep you guessing until the very end.

What truly shines are the complex, relatable characters who navigate a tangled web of deception with both vulnerability and determination. The protagonist’s journey is especially compelling, filled with moments of grit and ingenuity that make you root for them throughout. The intricate use of origami as both a metaphor and plot device adds a unique and fascinating dimension to the narrative, enhancing the thriller’s appeal.

With a perfect balance of fast-paced scenes and thoughtful moments, Origami Deception is a must-read for fans of intelligent thrillers. It’s a novel that not only entertains but also leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended!

This was a great read! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers. I was a bit confused at the start, which is exactly how I like my books. I felt as if the author had the perfect balance of main plot and sub plot. Each character had a motive and a design they were following and it blended very well within the context of the story. The title is good and definitely plays a key role in the story. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is I have mixed feelings about the accuracy of the title. That being said I still enjoyed the read and would highly recommend this one. Great work David!!!!

”i might be sardonic at times, but i think there needs to be people like you and me to bring things into the light. asking hard questions. now, more than ever. our society has become so callous to the world’s problems that, unless it affects them personally, people turn a blind eye to what is all around them.”

this is my first david wickenden book. i went in with no background and any expectations at all, and i must say the origami deception definitely posed a high caliber for its genre.

lucas and jamie—i absolutely loved the two journalists. i admired their passion to write and their bravery to capture the story. the narrative revolves around mainly on the adversaries of the mining company while having a subplot involving the world of trafficking. how david managed to reveal the connection till the very end floors me.

but beyond that, it highlighted power, greed, and dominance. in this era where misinformation is prevalent, where people are more vulnerable to crimes and exploitation, the effects of corruption and how lives are implicated, journalism plays a vital role in portraying the whole truth and reality.

throughout, i had a hard a time distinguishing fiction and real life because the entire storyline seemed like the actual world. i devoured the thrill of each chapter; i felt rage, disgust, hopeful. every character, every conjuncture, every detail made the fascinating book it is.

there’s not much i didn’t like. as the story progressed, it deviated from what i thought it would be based on the prologue. it also appeared that drago, the convict, was invincible and i was hoping for a more deserved retribution for him. nonetheless, the origami deception is one of those books that will certainly leave a mark.

The Origami Deception by Dave Wickenden is another knockout from an author who never fails to deliver. Having read and enjoyed Dave's previous books, I went into this one with high expectations—and I wasn't disappointed.

The story of two journalists, Lucas and Jamie, taking on an international cartel sounds intense, and trust me, it is. The way Dave brings these characters to life is something I've always admired in his writing. Lucas, the seasoned veteran, and Jamie, the eager newcomer, have such a compelling dynamic that I found myself completely invested in their journey. Their relationship evolves naturally, and you really feel the tension and respect between them as they dig deeper into the story.

What I love most about Dave’s work is how he paints a scene. His descriptions are so vivid that you can almost hear the explosions and feel the pressure mounting as the plot unfolds. The action is nonstop, but it's the layers of intrigue and the unexpected twists that really grab you. The way everything ties together in the end is just brilliant.

This book is packed with suspense, but it's also grounded in reality. The plot is not just believable—it's frighteningly plausible, which makes it all the more gripping. Dave's knack for weaving together complex, interconnected stories shines through here, and I found myself constantly guessing (and second-guessing) what would happen next.

I’ve been a fan of Dave’s writing for years, and The Origami Deception is yet another reminder of why. It’s a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat read, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Wow what a book! I was hooked from the beginning trying to piece together how the various happenings within this small Canadian town fit together.

Lucas and Jamie’s determination to find the truth is refreshing in this current climate where it feels like the media is so corrupt and you don’t know what to believe. They were both determined to get to the truth while still being vulnerable, compassionate and honestly cool under the pressure of the situation they find themselves in.

This book was a perfect blend of plot and subplot. There was a good mix of suspense, intrigue, heart pounding action, while also touching on hard topics that lead to through provoking questions.

There were times this book felt so real. The power, greed, and dominance all things we see everyday in the news. Another country trying to assert their control and power over another. This book really makes you question how far those in search of power are willing to go and if there is any concern at all for the lives lost along the way.

This was my first David Wickenden book but I’ll definitely be reading more of his work. This was a great book and highly recommend if you are looking for a complex edge of your seat thriller.

Lucas is a journalist and the story he's currently following is about a mining company that exploits its employees and has a history of many problems that have affected environmental safety. At the time the workers were on strike and the unions were unable to reach a common ground.
When the boss takes this story and hands it over to Jamie, a journalist with less experience, Lucas moves on to a new story about exploited young girls. Seeing the benefits of a collaboration, Jamie asks him to work together on both stories to make sure they get results.
The topics the two journalists pursue become more and more interesting and it seems there are many people who don't want the truth to come out.
Lucas is very easy to love and has become my favorite character, he has always fought so as to be the voice of exploited young women who no longer have anyone on their side.
I highly recommend the book, from her lines I could feel the anger at the injustices that take place every day but also the hope that people like Lucas and Jamie will be able to put things right.

David Wickenden’s The Origami Deception is a thrilling and timely novel that dives into corporate greed, environmental destruction, and the fight for justice. It blends investigative journalism with personal revenge, creating a gripping story that feels both urgent and realistic.

One of the things I really liked about this book was its pacing. From the first chapter, it pulls you in with vivid descriptions and a sense of real-world consequences. The way the story moves between different locations and perspectives keeps it fresh, and I found myself genuinely invested in how it would all unfold. The characters, especially Lucas and Jaren, have compelling arcs, and even though their motivations are different, they each bring a lot of heart to the story.

That said, there were moments where the plot felt a bit predictable—if you’ve read a lot of corporate thrillers, you might see some twists coming. But that didn’t take away from the experience for me. The novel does a great job of making you think about power, responsibility, and what it really takes to hold big corporations accountable.

Overall, The Origami Deception is an engaging read with a strong message. If you like stories about uncovering the truth and fighting against corruption, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Smart, Gripping, and Cinematic A Must-Read Thriller!

This book is a total adrenaline rush from start to finish! The author delivers a masterfully crafted story that blends investigative journalism, international intrigue, and heart-pounding suspense into one unforgettable ride. Lucas and Jamie make a dynamic, believable pair two journalists thrown into a world of danger far bigger than either imagined. Their chemistry, tension, and determination make the story feel both authentic and urgent.

The pacing is perfect tight, fast-moving, and filled with twists that keep you guessing until the very end. The way the author connects local events to a high-stakes global conspiracy is nothing short of brilliant. Every chapter deepens the mystery and raises the stakes, and by the final act, it feels like you’re right in the middle of a major motion picture.

It’s rare to find a thriller that captures both the gritty realism of journalism and the sweeping scale of international politics, but this book nails it. Sharp writing, vivid characters, and explosive action make it impossible to put down. Fans of political thrillers and investigative dramas will absolutely love this one!

A five-star masterpiece that deserves to be on every thriller lover’s shelf.

The Origami Deception by Dave Wickenden is a masterpiece from the author who never fails to deliver.

On the surface, The Origami Deception focuses on the conflict involving a major international mining company. However, it also critiques the unethical practices employed by such companies worldwide and the moral deficiencies among the leadership of a certain superpower.

The novel is deeply rooted in the rugged northern Canadian communities it portrays, which are depicted with great care and detail.

The main characters, Lucas and Jamie, are dedicated small-market reporters determined to uncover a significant news story, regardless of the personal sacrifices they must make. However, they find themselves outmatched by ruthless operatives who have no hesitation in resorting to mass destruction.

Like the journalistic investigations it celebrates, Wickenden's novel is well-researched and methodical in its approach. Once the story gains momentum, it builds to an intense final confrontation.

Wickenden excels at exploring international intrigue through the lens of Canadian life outside major cities, and he has accomplished this once again in *The Origami Deception*.

I found this book to be a reflection of the world we live in today. The politics and political interference, the drugs and societal repercussions and all in a story that is close to home. You feel closer to these lead characters because you know where they are and feel like they are a part of your northern Ontario family.
A story about two journalists, one a seasoned professional with contacts and previous investigative wins and a newbie. Jamie lacks the experience but her smarts and can do attitude add to this suspenseful story. Add in a mine with workers on strike and explosions and you have a book that was not easy to put down until it was finished.
"What the hell was going on?"
It is easy to see the author's life experiences captured on the pages of this novel. Realistic, the violence, crime and death added depth and intrigue to the story.
A terrific novel set in northern Ontario.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Lucas Kucher is a hardworking journalist living from paycheck to paycheck. He loves journalism but things are hard for reporters this days. He is investigating a strike in a local mine when his editor takes him out of his story, giving it to his new protegé, and reassigning him to watch for a very curious beating a pimp took from a couple of unknown women. How could this evolve into a fast novel about eco crimes, sabotage, international conspirations and murder? Well, it does. It does brilliantly. The pace is so fast that I've seen slower NASCAR races. The characters are solid, you could really feel and love them, even those with small parts on the story. And in the middle, the steel will of the rookie Jamie and the calm experience and compassion of Lucas make wonders.

This novel is a highly recommended read for thriller lovers.

This thriller grips the reader from its opening pages. From across the globe to Northern Ontario, the story reminds us that no place is exempt from the geopolitical issues facing our world.
The story is fast-paced, packed with tension, and filled with authentic characters. By shining the spotlight on the age-old domestic tragedy of violence towards women and sex workers, in parallel with global terrorism, the author delivers a frighteningly realistic story.
Wickenden’s latest book will leave you reading the news with a new perspective and an eye over your shoulder, wondering who you can trust.

This book is such an amazing thrill, it leaves you on the edge of your seat. Dave never disappoints. This book made me realize how being a journalist is truly calling, not everyone has the stamina to do what those 2 journalist characters did. Tackling investigations of attacks at the a mining company to uncovering various crimes along the way is awesome.
I truly enjoyed reading this book, the whole concepts is written with so much expertise, knowledge and intelligence. Dave has become one of my best authors, welldone Dave and keeping writing more thrilling stories. Also thank you for sharing your book for free, I appreciate.
Happy holidays.

I highly recommend this novel to curious mind readers seeking mystery and depth. The world is indeed not what it seems. I look forward to reading more of your insightful stories, David!

I chose this book because I felt drawn to its cover design and description, and I found the title intriguing.

This is a thriller set in Canada, and the storyline is centred around the mining industry.

I felt it threw me straight into the action, and I liked the atmosphere. The characters were interesting, and the plot was engaging. It was fast paced and had me turning the pages quickly. I also felt the characters, and their interactions and behaviours, were believable. This is the type of book that I might choose if I wanted something that I could really sink my teeth into.

In the end it was all around a good book. I enjoyed reading. I cringed at the painful parts of some of characters when they got hurt. The cute little love scenes were everything because you get to watch them genuinely become coworkers, friends and now lovers. Sucks that the world is so evil and they couldn’t put out the full story without backlash from all parties. The girls who got out and went on to do things differently in their life. Hoping the others follow as well. I wouldn’t mind a second book to see what they’re up to working wise in their future or even their love life

Investigative journalists are the best disinfect for corruption and crimes against humanity. Christine, Lucas, and Jaime showed courage and determination to expose corruption, sex trafficking and a cost to their safety. Power and wealth are a big part of sex trafficking and everyone forgets these are people's daughters and nieces. David Wickendon has shown he is very adept at writing all genres. He's one of my favorites now. I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.

I would like to start out by saying that I went into this book not expecting too much. It wasn't a topic I was the most interested in but was still willing to give it a try. I'm so incredibly glad I did. It was honestly such a fantastic book and definitely worth reading. The characters and story were both well done and engaging!

I really enjoyed this book, mystery/thrillers not usually being my go-to, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the errors, including some name mix-ups, it was great to read a book set where I live and written by a local author! I could really picture the different locations and landscapes, I loved it!
