A witch assassin. An FBI agent. A dangerous conspiracy unravels.
Valerie Kuriaken, a skilled witch assassin known as a SHVA, has always worked alone. When a routine mission brings her face-to-face with FBI agent Benjamin Carter, their paths become intertwined.
Ben, a seasoned agent, is thrown into a world of magic and shadows as he joins forces with Valerie to uncover the Ascendants’ sinister plot that threatens both the human and magical realms.
Valerie and Ben navigate a treacherous landscape filled with dark artifacts, powerful enemies, and hidden agendas.
With each step, they unravel a conspiracy that reaches far beyond anything they could have imagined.
When the stakes rise and the lines between ally and enemy blur, they find themselves questioning everything they thought they knew.
Can a witch assassin and an FBI agent set aside their differences and work together to save both their worlds? Or will the Ascendants' dark machinations plunge them all into chaos?
By this point I am such a die-hard Fanderle (my book -nerd version of Barry Manilow’s “Fanilows”) it’s pretty much a given that I’m going to purchase anything with his name on it.
Several hundreds of titles later, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop - for the book to, not so much suck, as to perhaps maybe be a bit derivative or at least stereotypical. If I’m honest, I guess I’m expecting for his creative energies to finally give out. But guess what? THEY DON’T! And I couldn’t be any happier to be wrong.
Every series, including this one, offers a new approach and a different perspective. Remember what I said above… he now has several hundreds of titles to his credit and this phenomenon shows no signs of flagging energies, burnout or ennui. If he had a drum strapped to his chest we’d probably mistake him for the energizer bunny.
This book is just another great example of what he can do, and I can’t wait for the next one.
Ok, last thoughts - there IS a possibility that he repurposed a theme from one of his other works… no, seriously. Where else have we heard of an “arms race” built around competition for acquiring magical artifacts? The implementation of that concept, however, promises to be quite different and I’m
This book was rather slow at the beginning, but it finally picked up a little bit. There were several things that I did not like about this book. I felt like a lot of places in this book had a lot of fluff and not really anything relevant. It was almost like the author was trying to make her book longer so she just added BS in there. The main character, Ben was very interesting. I also liked Thomas and their witch. I don’t think I’m going to read the next book in this series though.
A different take on urban fantasy - the heroine is not girly or giggly, the Hero is not all muscle (though he is over 6 feet tall). The Sheva are a new idea, and that's always nice to read. My only "complaint" as such is the prose itself which sounds less mature than it could have, however, that's a stylistic complaint and not a complaint about words being used incorrectly or spelling/grammar errors.
This was a simplistic tale merging together a supernatural living FBI agent, a new typeof witch and bringing in another FBI agent with rogue-ish tendencies. For me, the main characters and villains were somewhat stereotypical and the story felt more like an RPG urban fantasy.
Really enjoyed the mix in this...story, characters and potential. Magic, feds...not really a mix you expect but it works. A good start to a promising series (not that surprising with this author!) And there is the likely expectation of a twist...but probably not the one expected! One to watch I think (I will be!!)
Michael Todd Anderle has come up with another cracking story, which is starting a new series. This has held my attention even though I had planned to be asleep over an hour ago. I can, once again, highly recommend this book, now, when is the next one out? ...
Not terrible, but kind of boring. Way too much dialogue and not enough action. The characters are mildly interesting, and Ken the sentient knife is definitely the star, but the story just chugs along slowly on the road to nowhere.
This is the first book I have a read by this author. It was engaging, exciting plenty of suspense and action. I like all of the characters. I am waiting for the next book of the series so I can read it.
If you like this genre , then you will find this story very appealing. If you are a new reader, you may find this interesting and hopefully as an entry into a great type of series that are out there.
This book grabbed my attention in chapter one and kept it to the end. I'm very glad this is book 1, because I'm not ready to say goodbye to the characters.
Decent enough urban fantasy series but not really anything exceptional. I like the story, I like the characters and the writing is okay.
Sometimes it, especially the dialogue, is just silly and I am a bit disappointed about the powers of Valerie. The Shevas are initially described as the nuclear option, a witch with the power to level cities. That she is not. As a matter of fact, she gets her ass kicked quite frequently.
Still a decent enough series to read while watching a movie or TV-show at the same time.
