Ranco (Ran Cohen) is a children’s author whose stories blend humor, imagination, and emotional insight. The world of Leviatopia began more than twenty-five years ago as a bedtime story he invented for his children, long before it became a published book series. What started as a quiet nightly ritual gradually grew into a rich, whimsical universe shaped by family life, curiosity, and play.

His writing often explores themes of friendship, kindness, responsibility, and growing up, not through lectures, but through absurd situations, magical worlds, and everyday moments that feel familiar to young readers. Ranco believes that stories meant for children should be read aloud, shared, and laughed over, while still leaving space for thought and reflection.

In addition to the Leviatopia series, he is the creator of Tommy Tootley’s Fart-astic Family, a playful collection of books and interactive apps that celebrate silly humor, imagination, and the chaos of family life. Across all his work, Ranco aims to create stories that invite children to think, feel, and engage, whether on the page or on the screen.

He is a father of three, the devoted human of a dog named Luna, and continues to write stories meant to be shared one page at a time.

A day at the beach turns into a world of magic and adventure for two children on summer holiday in this delightful picture book by Ran Cohen.

Best friends since kindergarten, Alex and Ella share a secret. A special secret. They share a dream about a city inside the stomach of a whale called Leviatopia. When the kids decide to enjoy a day at the beach on a warm summer day, the wind kicks up and the waves get higher and higher. Nearly swept out to sea, Alex and Ella fight their way back to terra firma. Then a “gigantic wave” rises. Before they’re able to yell for help, everything grows dark. Next thing you know, they’re inside the belly of a whale named Levi. (I’m seeing Jonah here.)

The whale introduces himself via intercom and communicates in rhyme. (This is pretty darn clever, by the way.) Levi explains that they’re in a city called “Leviatopia.” There’s also a flying zoo. A restaurant. One humdinger of a candy store. And toys galore.

Alex and Ella soon discover they have one last adventure in Leviatopia. What will they find inside a silver door? Later, the kids wonder if Leviatopia was a dream, or something else…?

A clever combination of fantasy, magic, and adventure, Leviatopia is a whale of a good time. Themes explored include friendship, bravery, and the power of dreams. Sweet and supple, the story skims along briskly and draws readers in from page one. It’s long enough to whet the appetites of young readers but short enough to avoid straining short attention spans. Colorful illustrations bring the story to life. I loved the purple dwarf! Levi’s gentle rhyming communiques are a fun way to interact with Alex and Ella as they explore this fantastical city. The writing is solid, the illustrations first-class, the story lively and lithe. It'll leave you wanting more.

Indeed, Leviatopia would make a welcome addition to any school or home library. It would also make a good choice for a read-aloud or bedtime story.

Whether on land or at sea, Leviatopia is sure to make a splash with its target audience of kids ages three to eight years old and those who love them. Bon voyage!
