Martina Floor is an amazing mentor for anyone who aspires to make their art into a succesfull business. I’ve taken her course “Leap Now” earlier on and with this read I once again feel that someone is taking me by the hand and walking with me as I take my own steps and finding my career path forward. The format is an easy-read and with a new, refreshing approach to a business guide - keeping all aspects of being human in mind as it walks through the ups and downs of pursuing your dreams whole-heartedly.

„Make it“ is a compelling narrative that delves into the journey of self-discovery and creative expression. Known for her remarkable artistry and creativity, Martina brings her unique perspective to life through the character of Mary, whose experiences resonate deeply with readers who have grappled with the trials and triumphs of the artistic process.

From the very first page, her storytelling captivates with its authenticity and relatability. Mary's journey is not just a personal one; it mirrors the struggles and breakthroughs that many artists encounter in their quest to find their true selves. Martina Flor's "Make it" is a compelling narrative that will deeply resonate with passionate lettering enthusiasts aspiring to turn their art into a profession. Drawing parallels to Robin Sharma's "The 5 AM Club," Martina Flor's book takes a unique approach for a business book by intertwining a captivating storyline with practical advice on starting a lettering business.

The central narrative follows Mary, a character navigating the challenges and triumphs of becoming a professional lettering artist. Guided by a mentor, Mary and the reader embark on a journey filled with valuable lessons and emotional insights into entrepreneurship. Martina Flor skillfully weaves these elements together, creating a storyline that not only engages but also educates.

One of the book's strengths lies in its ability to address the emotional struggles of starting a business in the creative industry.Through Mary's experiences, readers gain a deeper understanding and in the same time get emotional support for their own journey. Martina Flor's storytelling not only inspires but also equips readers with practical knowledge often overlooked in traditional design education.

Overall, "Make it" is a must-read for anyone with a dream of turning their lettering skills into a livelihood. Martina Flor's blend of narrative and practical advice makes this book both an enjoyable read and a valuable resource for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs alike.

A heartfelt thank you 💕to Martina Flor for crafting such an inspiring and empowering book for freelancers.

Dive into a relatable story that speaks to every creative soul striving to make it solo. Martina Flor's book unfolds a tale that resonates deeply, especially with characters like Mary, who mirror our artistic journeys. I genuinely adore the format of a story, as it makes the lessons so much more engaging and impactful.

As someone who embarked on her solo career in 2021, with Martina Flor's guidance illuminating my path, this book is a beacon for those seeking inspiration and direction. Freelancing and navigating the creative world alone doesn't have to be a daunting challenge. You're much closer to those designers you admire than you might think.

What I find most valuable about Mary's journey is the practical, actionable steps she takes, which you can seamlessly integrate into your own freelance career. Her story is a testament to the fact that with the right mindset and tools, you can thrive as an independent artist. This book isn't just a one-time read; it's a companion I'll revisit whenever I need a boost or feel like the hurdles are too high.

Martina Flor has crafted a narrative that not only inspires but also serves as a reliable guide, equipping you with the knowledge to carve your own path. If you're in search of a companion to help you navigate the highs and lows of freelancing, this is the book for you. It's a reminder that we all have the potential to create something beautiful and meaningful on our own terms.

Mary may be a fictional character, but that doesn't diminish her ability to resonate deeply with readers, especially those engaged in graphic mediums. Readers can easily identify with her, seeing their own reflections and the author's projections within her story. This creates a valuable source of inspiration and practical advice for anyone embarking on a solo career in lettering.

The author masterfully delves into introspection, using brilliant and intelligent narration to create something truly original in the field of letter design—something I had never encountered before.

For those of us who have been students of the author, this book is an extension of her teaching. Reading it feels like a homework and a companion, with Martina's voice guiding you, clarifying doubts, and inspiring you to start a freelance career.

I recently read Martina Flor’s book on starting a creative journey and turning it into a business, and it couldn’t have arrived at a better time for me. I’ve amassed a collection of books on calligraphy, lettering, and even pricing art. However, this book stands out because it addresses the critical timing and questions that every artist grapples with before launching their own business in the creative field. It offers guidance in every aspect one could need to pursue their creative journey and take it to the next level. It resonates deeply with my current situation as I balance my interior design job with my growing passion for calligraphy and lettering. This book will undoubtedly be invaluable to many creators navigating similar crossroads. Thank you, Martina Flor, for this wonderful book.💕

Fantastic read by one of my favorite lettering artists and educators, Martina Flor. She addresses issues facing many artists hoping to turn their creative drive into a fulfilling career. As one of those who has made it happen, she is realistic about challenges, but also about solutions. She is encouraging and shares many a inspirational anecdote that has helped motivate me on my own journey.

I absolutely loved it! The way Martina shares lessons through Mary's story makes everything so much more understandable and real. I felt deeply connected to Mary's challenges and triumphs, which is helping me to apply the book's concepts to my own journey.

There's a ton of practical advice and personal stories in here. At one point in my career, dealing with the struggles of working on my own, made me take a more secure job. But reading this book fired me up again to go after my personal project!

Martina's approach is authentic and powerful, giving not just motivation but also real tools to keep moving forward. This book is a gem for any creative or artist out there.

Mary is a character that is easy to relate to and the advice given is so valuable, inspiring, and helpful in so many ways. It maps out the steps needed to jump into starting your own creative business, addresses doubts and concerns you might have, feels like you are personally getting business advice from Martina, and more.

Reading this book inspired me to look into starting my own freelance career, and I’m sure it would inspire others to do so as well. If you’re looking for something that can help motivate you and guide you, this is the book for you! It is definitely one of a must have book in your creative library.

This book has really valuable information to set up your own business, and Martina is an example of a really successful creative and has a lot of knowledge to share, and, undeniably, heaps of design talent. It's worth the read, but there are a few caveats. (contains spoilers)
The book tells Mary's story, and although a south american, her story already starts at a place of privilege. She's already successful in a corporate career, and she has both time and money to dispose of to start her freelance career "doing what she loves". It's really hard to put the same effort she did if you don't have money to invest in courses (and although you can indeed take courses for free, the story emphasizes paid, renowned courses), nor the extra time because either you have kids or you have long commutes (a real burden for south americans!) or you need to do extra freelance to pay the bills. Also, time management is poorly explored as although she takes the course, it's never mentioned and it should take a significant portion of her time!
Telling Mary's story as a means of convening information is an interesting resource Martina chose for this book. Although it works as a somewhat engaging narrative, it’s also poorly constructed to emphasize the values the author wants. While at the corporate job as a creative director, she wants to do more hands-on creative and authoral work, and struggles with a somewhat incapable junior designer. Then she sets up her business and everything works out perfectly with virtually no bumps or setbacks, a growing list of clients, seamlessly increasing rates without backlash from clients (unreal!), she hires the help of an intern designer that is perfect from the first day, to whom she gradually gives more of the hands-on work to focus on being what isn’t named but is basically the role of a… creative director. The approach also feels a bit hypocritical when it comes to not wanting to work to do the work for others, but having no issue of having others do the work for you - granted, this could be a personality trait not a general artistic approach, but could be more spelled out.
I feel like a lot of things could be more spelled out. Mary’s story works out not only because of her talent and perseverance, but because she is privileged (especially financially) and she was lucky to be well-related to have a successful and thoughtful mentor in her group of friends. The “setback” she faces in her business is “I’m growing too much!” and never “I don’t have enough work”, which is the reality for most freelancers in the beginning or at some points in their careers - economic struggles an industry faces impacts the amount of work a freelancer gets, as many other things that can’t be solved by simply “reaching out to clients”. And although the tips in the “reaching out to clients” are truly great and invaluable, I always thought there was some piece of information missing that would really be the difference for that approach. In real life, it’s hardly the case freelancers can turn down jobs at will as the author preaches, but do think it’s valuable to have that lesson in the book as well - just needed to allow for the spelling out that it’s not always possible.
Overall, I’d like to have seen a more grounded book with a more rounded and thoughtful narrative. But there’s some great and invaluable information here and there that I will definitely apply in my practice - in that regard, a successful book!

Again, Martina Flor puts together an other exquisite book which speaks directly to aspiring lettering and commercial artists. After the Golden Secrets of Lettering and Leap Now, Make it is the perfect book to close the circle, although you can also read all of them independently (totally recommend!)

If you day-dream of becoming a commercial artist, this book provides both motivational and hands-on insights to start walking your path towards your dreams, with your own definition of success. While going through the book, the story of Mary resonate deeply with my personal story (and I am sure that also with other’s starting their journey). At the same time, all the secrets The Artist reveals throughout the book were AHA-moments to collect, shift my mindset and put into practice.

I feel that this is a book to read while starting your freelance business and to keep close as time passes by. It brings comfort because it shows you that: you are not alone; you don’t need to know everything in order to starting pursuing your dream job and life; it’s okay to solve things on the way when challenges appear and that new challenges are a sign of growth.

Plus, Mary’s entertaining story is also dissected into actionable steps, providing the reader with tools to apply no matter in which step of the journey they may be. By going trough Mary’s ups and downs and translating her journey into a human level, Martina writes in a very fluent and easy-to-understand way. She also packs loads of information into a captivating story and at the same time touch on the pain-points, doubts, concerns and fears and also milestones and achievements of every artist that would love to start their own business and don’t know how.

Totally recommend this book and I am sure I will keep it near as my journey moves forward. Thanks Martina for bringing all your experience, knowledge and best-advices into this lovely story.

It's an inspiring and encouraging story of growth and success with the proper dose of self doubt, faux steps, and drama that makes it a believable story. At the same time it's a reference book to study and keep in hand when you are an aspiring artist.

It's not easy to tag this book because it can fall in several different categories. The mainstream is an inspirational story but, within the passages, you are prompted to reflect on your own views as human being and a creative person. What's your posture about work, in general, and particularly talking about working as a creative? What's your vision of yourself as a creative? Are you living the life you want to live? Are you fulfilling your needs in all levels of your existence? Or are you hiding your artist-self to secure a steady income in a full time corporate job?

In some pages, it's more like a step-by-step manual, neat and clear, actionable. Wow! You begin to realize it's not rocket science to launch your self to reach the stars.

Martina is a great teacher, coach, and human being. She knows it's not enough to have a manual to take action. We are humans, not program driven machines. We need the proper support to seed, nurture, and care of our sprouting enterprise. The word "solopreneur" often leads to a dangerous misunderstanding. She wisely points it out and shows how to avoid it.

Throughout the book, you find a key character, someone truly committed with the heroine success. The ideal mentor is fully pictured in this book. I dare say, Martina has made a great self portrait. You can almost hear her warm voice, see her smile, and feel her supportive attitude while she encourages you to Make it!

In sum, I love it! I have enjoyed many mind-blowing moments so, I highly recommend it!

Make It takes a unique approach to the subject of art-as-business, sneakily employing the Socratic Method to impart knowledge. This series of fictional conversations between artist and student provides a surprisingly successful, realistic, and personal view into establishing an artistic career—something that is too often seen as impractical, irresponsible, or poorly thought out. While the dialogue is at times stilted and awkward, the message is clear and resonates in a way that traditional business books may not. I was suspicious of the approach when I started reading, but it turns out that Socratic inquiry is an established technique for a reason. Who knew? (Well, thousands of years of educators.) This book has the potential to strike a chord with creatives who want business guidance but haven’t felt that other books truly understand them.

The obvious caveat is, of course, that a single book still can’t represent and address the nuances of every individual’s situation. (Do I suddenly know how to magically overcome my disability and access creative resources that are currently inaccessible to me? Certainly not.) There’s no guarantee of success as an artist or in any career, but thankfully Flor doesn’t make any grandiose or ridiculous claims about achieving overnight success. Make It establishes a practical, step-by-step framework for the hard work that goes into taking a less conventional path. Overall it’s an approachable book with actionable steps for a healthy, sustainable, enriched creative life.

This book stands out for its unique approach, using storytelling to convey the intricacies and steps necessary for becoming a successful lettering artist.

From the outset, Martina Flor captivates the reader with the story of Mary, a passionate individual and lettering artist who works in a company but wants to dedicate herself to her own lettering business in the beginning she does not know how to reconcile those two worlds or where to begin.

Through Mary's journey we are introduced to the foundational aspects of this world from understanding different styles and techniques to the importance of developing a unique voice and the steps necessary to become a successful artist and entrepreneur.

Mary's character is guided by "The Artist" through this process of becoming a successful lettering artist.

Each chapter show us Mary and the problems she finds on her journey making the learning process both engaging and informative.

Whether you are just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this book provides the guidance and motivation needed to embark on your own journey

Martina has managed to capture the struggles of a modern day creative, and craft it into a narrative that we can relate to.

Main character Mary's life and experience during the story so closely resembles many of our own; the feelings of being unfulfilled, the stress, the disconnection, the unhappiness, to put it frankly. It's all there, and its clear that Martina wrote this from the perspective of having been through it herself. Almost immediately, I felt an instant connection with Mary having read through the opening chapter.

The narrative reads like the accomplished Martina speaking back in time to her younger self, teaching her (and by extension, us) what she wishes she could have known back when she took her first steps into freelancing.

Martina also inserts real-life systems, thoughts, and practices into the book without making them feel forced. It doesn't feel like someone lecturing us from on high, but rather, like a friend guiding us through.

A must-read for anyone in the creative space who wants to get inspired and take actionable steps towards a better life/career.

As a long-time follower of Martina Flor, I am excited about this book because it offers real life situations that a new soloprenuer in the art industry might encounter and offers helpful tips to navigate the challenges of motivation, time management, business plans, and growth.

Reading about someone else’s experience as they transition from full-time job security to freelance scaries with a knowledgeable coach makes it all seem more attainable. As an artist who has yet to find their own unique path, Mary is a relatable character facing her fears, challenges, and emotions. When she gets stuck, she has someone in her corner to keep her going - we all need The Artist; we all have questions at different stages of this journey.

It’s a different approach to self-help through a character you can see yourself in, getting support from a trusted mentor, delivered in a matter-of-fact, practical and insightful guidebook. If you need a push toward the next step of your own freelance business, read this book.

I just finished Make It and loved it! It’s an easy read and I finished it so quickly. Martina’s storytelling leads you through the process of taking the big leap into solopreneurship in a very natural yet creative way. Through her unique writing style, this book lays out a step-by-step pathway from beginning to end. The illustrations are a great addition and help connect the dots in a straightforward manner.

I found it to be incredibly relatable, and at one point, felt that the characters were speaking directly to me! As I am in the beginning stage of my personal journey, I can identify with several of the phases Mary is going through, asking myself the same questions and having the same concerns.

“Make It” will resonate with many artists. It validates all of the worries, self-doubt and fears associated with leaving a job that may feel stable and secure, and mustering up the courage to follow your own path and create your own business that provides a sustainable income, while meeting your own aspirations and without sacrificing your personal lifestyle goals.

Regardless of where you are in your journey, this book not only puts things into perspective, but also provides reassurance and is a great reminder that there’s a big supportive community out there!

Martina's book is a pretty much down-to-earth, straightforward guide on how to build a business out of your art. She drives away from the idea of just "freelancing" (since many professionals end up being "employees" of multiple clients) to introduce a way of working from a business mindset. This is definitely a refreshing approach given that the concepts of "art" and "business" are not usually seen together.

The use of a fictional character like Mary helps easily illustrate the journey, giving the example first and the theory later. However, Mary seems to have a somewhat privileged starting point and golden opportunities that may not be at hand for artists and professionals in general. This makes it hard to relate to.

All in all, "Make It" is a good resource of inspiration and ideas to develop a creative business, not only for designers or lettering professionals, but also for artists in general.

I wish I had this book when I was starting out. It's is a refreshing take on career advice for type designers in particular, but applicable to all commercial artists and creatives.

The book follows a Creative Director's journey from corporate burnout to successful freelancer and small business owner. She's guided along the way by a mentor, The Artist. This narrative approach, while not my usual cup of tea for business books, works well. It's relatable and makes the advice feel more personal.

The book has good advice on long-term career development, client outreach, community building, and hiring/delegation. It would be particularly valuable for those a few years into their careers or considering the leap to freelancing.

I wish it went into more detail around calculating hourly rates, but that topic could be a book in itself.

The author also seems oddly negative about coffee at times (what's that about?). 🙅‍♂️☕

Overall a good read. Grab a coffee while you read it. :-)

This book made me feel seen!

First of all I found the format of Make It! really captivating. Even though I had read already that it was different from other business books, I was not prepared to read a story that would resonate so strongly with me. And that at the same time would give so many useful insights.

It is truly a testament that the struggles creatives face are universal and that for every problem there is a solution, which usually lies already within us. It’s just a matter of taking a leap ;) and putting one foot in front of the other.

Even though this book is about the business of art, I honestly believe that the concepts and mindset can be translated to many disciplines. It is a treasure for creatives looking to build a real and sustainable business around their passion. Loved it!

Thank you Martina for pouring your experience in this book and giving us an incredible head start in the business of art.

Martina Flor's "Make It" stands out as an essential read for anyone in the creative industry looking to transform their passion into a successful business, as it offers a unique blend of inspiration and practicality that sets it apart.

Flor's choice to present her insights through the narrative of Mary, a fictional character, adds a relatable and engaging element to the book. Mary's journey from a corporate creative director to a thriving freelancer mirrors the struggles and triumphs many artists face. This storytelling approach makes complex business concepts accessible and memorable.

What I appreciate most about "Make It" is its actionable advice. Flor doesn't just provide high-level concepts; she breaks down the steps necessary to build a freelance career, from acquiring clients to managing growth. This practical guidance is invaluable for both new and seasoned creatives.

To be honest, I felt like I was literally walking in Mary’s shoes. From the constant overwhelm at the beginning to being unsure of what my next step should be. I have to say that this is unlike any business book I have ever read and is very right-brained, which I loved. It felt like going through the steps of building a business with a friend right there to lead you every step of the way. I particularly liked Mary’s Insights and the Artist’s Tip (mini-spoiler alert!) sprinkled through each stage of the business so you could see the inner workings of Mary’s mind slowly grow into that of a confident solopreneur as the Artist gave her the tools to work with.

If you’re looking for a relatable and inspiring read that will lovingly kick your butt in the right direction, to ‘Make it!’ this is definitely it!

In a very simple way, Martina immerses us in the life of Mary, and I truly felt like Mary throughout the entire journey. I have experienced all her struggles and concerns at many different stages of my life, and sometimes all at once. The special thing about this book is the learning path. You can read as fast as you can and grasp all the ideas to improve your freelance commitment and knowledge, and you can do it at the pace Mary goes, taking it as a personal coach helping you along this path and improving at your own rhythm. Martina simplifies the difficult process of believing in yourself, taking you by the hand through all her amazing lessons as someone who has already lived that path and who believes that we can also do it and live our art with commitment and happiness. I'm in love with her generosity and just want to keep growing with all the tools she provides.

“Make It” is like no other book you will ever read! Rather than telling readers about the steps they need to take to begin seeing some progress, Martina Flor takes us behind the scenes of what starting a creative career looks like from the point of view of an artist who is at the crux herself. Through her, her thoughts, her feelings, and frustrations, we can see what it really looks like to be there at that point of transformation, and what steps we need to take to get to the next level. I love this book! It has been a pleasure to read it! I feel like Martina really gets to the truth of what it feels like to be at the beginning—hopeful but insecure—and has laid out a beautiful, realistic, truthful path to follow full of encouragement and wisdom. I am excited to put these principles into practice in my own creative career. Gracias, Martina!!

The Artist lives rent-free in my head!
If you are creative and need support and encouragement to take yourself and your craft or passion seriously, this book is for you. The concept has a fresh approach to art making. It's a conversational narrative, making it easy to follow and transform the content into actionable steps. This read is a reminder of the importance of putting production and priority around practicing your craft, in a non-stuffy approach. It's a legit framework for starting and running your creative business as you visualize yourself being mentored. MAKE IT allows you to build a story around how you want your life to look and feel. The storyline is anticipatory. And as you follow along it leaves you looking forward to your next steps as you practice your craft and turn it into work you love.

Martina Flor's latest book, “Make It,” is a standout addition to the business advice genre. As a long-time follower of her work, I have eagerly purchased every one of her books, and this one truly elevates the genre. The format and content are simply brilliant.

With over 25 years in the creative industry, I’ve seen many creative business books come and go, often filled with good advice but presented in a way that made staying awake a challenge. “Make It” is the book I wish I had when I started my journey. Martina’s valuable lessons are remarkable.

Reading this book will inspire you to take action and make your career dreams a reality. It reignited my passion and determination to revive my own company. I highly recommend this book.

For those looking to follow in Martina’s footsteps, you couldn't ask for a better model or guide. Her guidance and inspiration are invaluable. As far as I am concerned, where Martina leads, I will happily follow.
