She turned me down at a masquerade party, then gave herself to someone else. So when she put herself up for auction, I made sure I was the highest bidder. I didn’t do it to protect her, I wanted to own her. To punish her; remind her who she rejected. I told myself it was a transaction. Nothing more. But Vivian didn’t respond the way she was supposed to. She obeyed. She submitted. She smiled like she wasn’t afraid of me—and I hated how much I liked that. She was never supposed to matter. Then she walked away. Now I can’t stop thinking about her. The girl I tried to break is the one who broke me. And I’ll do whatever it takes to get her back.
From the Important Note to Potential Readers Harvard studies have shown trigger warnings may cause more harm than good, so the only warning I’ll provide is if you’re a reader who needs trigger warnings, do not read this book. I cannot stress this enough. There is so much morally corrupt and/or legally questionable shit in this story, it’s not funny. It is not your typical Tess Summers book. You’ve been warned. On a sidenote, it does have an HEA, so there’s that.
USA Today and Amazon best-selling author, Tess Summers is a former business woman and teacher who always loved writing but never seemed to have time to sit down and write a short story, let alone a novel. Now battling MS, her life changed dramatically, and she has finally slowed down enough to start writing all the stories she'd been wanting to tell, including the fun and sexy ones! Married over twenty-five years with three grown children, Tess is a former dog foster mom who ended up failing and adopting them instead. She and her husband (and their six dogs) split their time between the desert of Arizona and the lakes of Michigan, so she's always in a climate that's not too hot and not too cold, but just right!
This book is a bit dark, so you may prefer to pass on it if you need trigger warnings. It’s not super dark, and I only consider them mild trigger warnings. I was a bit unsure about the book in the beginning because I found it a little distasteful at first, but I decided to stick with it and I really liked how everything played out. I thought the character development was well done and could empathize with both Vivian and Jeff. And the HEA was very satisfying. I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow! Not what I expected from a Tess Summers book. She did warn us…..this would be different from her other books and dark. I love dark and this fast paced spicy book delivered! 🥵🥵 Vivian is a hard working stripper that will do anything for her family. So when she finds out her dead deadbeat of a father left her mother in serious debt to a loan shark, she decides to join an auction at a very exclusive club…..one that goes to the Highest Bidder. But the man who outbids them all is out to own her and remind her that she once turned him down, albeit due to her friend’s suggestion. Jeff is intense and charismatic and the chemistry between him and Vivian is overly hot. The dynamic push/pull made this a quick, hard to put down read! This book is for those who like dark spice, a little twisted, and lots of gray areas. Get ready for a thrilling ride of a read! Looking forward to reading more in this series!!
Im sure the author wanted us to like this couple but Jeff was totally unlikeable. He was too cruel and nasty and the degradation too much to ever redeem him enough to be believable.
No story to speak of, unappealing characters. If you want soft core porn with no redeeming storyline this book is for you, however be aware even the sex scenes weren't very interesting. Repetitive sex without any emotional outlay is just draining to the soul. Please Ms Summers , don't waste your talents on more books like this.
Vivian was just a women who was trying stay ahead but her later left her family with some Hugh debts who was threatening to pay up or else,so she decided to be in the action that her friend Kit told her about.Jeff just happen to be at this action and he bets on her because she turned him down earlier in the week and he wasn't happy about. He embarrasses her at the action and there isn't nothing she can do or her contract with him will be null and she won't get the money she needs. So from Fri night to Mon morning Vivian is Jeff's to be use anyway he wants. They both feel the changes with each other but they are afraid to face it.Viv picks up extra hours at the club she works at and one the nights she is doing a double Jeff walks in and catches Viv preforming with another man so he grabs one other girls for a private room and a bite later he walks out later and acts like he just finished and Viv gets so mad that she takes the collar of which is a signal that she doesn't belong to now one. They both think they are done with each, she fines that he didn't withhold the money that he bid on her, plus he made it so she doesn't owe the loan shark. She also fines out that the night that Jeff took one of girls to a private room,he did nothing wrong.Viv decides to go and talk to Jeff and they do work out their differences and Jeff tells her why he is the way he is and now she understands. This story is pretty good and I enjoyed it!
Vivian had a crappy upbringing and has finally escaped. She has her own place, goes to school, and has a job (a crappy one), and just when she thought she escaped, her father is pulling her back in from the grave. When her friend invites her to a masquerade party at her, she meets a stranger who intrigues her, but her friend warns her off. We met Dr. Jeff Connolly, in Sloan's book and from the brief glimpse we got, he appeared to be a prince charming. Talk about looks can be deceiving. Dr. Connolly has a dark side, and when Vivian turns him down at the masquerade party, it comes to light full force. When loan sharks were knocking for payment of her father's debts and threatened her mother, Vivian decided to participate in auction at Velvet Underground and guess who was the highest bidder. Dr. Connolly wasted no time in teaching Vivian a lesson in humiliation and degradation. Dr. Connolly has trust issues that he continues to struggle with. He is attracted to Vivian and fights his attraction by treating her harshly over the next four weeks. However, Vivian accepts every depraved act and craves more. As their times come to an end, Dr. Connolly must decide whether he will let "his angel" walk away. Overall, this was a complete departure from what Tess Summers wrote, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can not wait for the next installment.
I know we all were "warned" by this talented author that this book is a bit more spicy than her others, but - really! Whew. It's way past "a bit more"... She hit it out of the park with this one! So good!
Please know that this is a super spicy, quick read that is full of all the power dynamics of a D/s read. Vivian feels like she has no options left, when her dead father's past debt become due, so participating in an "auction" at an exclusive club seems like the answer. Unfortunately for her, Dr. Jeff Connelly is determined to be the highest bidder.
Jeff's unapologetic and dominant energies consume Vivian, and blur the lines of what is real, and what is temporary. I enjoyed following this couple's connection and steamy scenes that, yes at times, pushed boundaries for both of them. The pages turned themselves, and I appreciated the resolution to the story.
I recommend this author, and her catalog of addictive and engaging works and series. I look forward to her next new release. Fortunate to receive an ARC (thank you) I happily leave my thoughts.
Trust Fund Doc falls for stripper Wow, this is not the usual Tess Summers story. Vivian had a rough life growing up. Her now deceased dad was a drunk gambler who left his family nothing but debt to the mob. Vivian must find a way to keep her mother and sister from harm. Vivian’s friend Kit suggests she offer herself at an auction at the exclusive BDSM club, the Velvet Underground. She could earn a good amount of money to put toward the family’s mob debt. Dr. Jeff Connolly wants Vivian and bids a boatload of money to win her. Jeff is a trust fund baby, but he wanted to contribute to society, so he pursued a career as a doctor and works at the San Diego VA Medical Center. I believe Jeff is a good guy; he’s lonely, and is realizing he wants a relationship, but he fights his attraction to Vivian even pushing her away by calling her “whore or Slut” and that turns me off. Vivian and Jeff complement each other so well, despite having vastly different lives. I have nothing against light kinky BDSM, and that’s what this story centers around. The story is good, and I loved most of the characters. The ending is pretty awesome, which is my thing. Linda
One night her friend takes her to the scandalous club that she works at. He approaches her there, and she is immediately attracted to him, but her friend warn her off. Well there she finds out about an auction they run, she decides that this might be the only answer to her problems. Her father has passed away and left an alone, shark debt that her family is struggling to cover. He wins the auction, a month of weekends at his home as his toy. He hasn’t trusted women since his first girlfriend turned out to be a gold digger. He has spent years only looking for one thing., but the more he gets to know her the more he realizes she’s very different than he thought. This is a high heat high steam. Lots of smut story. There is a lot of degradation in this story, which I didn’t love so much. It really made him seem like a jerk with little redeeming qualities. There is a turning point, but it almost gives you whiplash after the way he has behaved for most of the story. I would’ve liked a little more easing in before the abrupt shift.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is definitely a different style than other titles by this author. A bit darker and dominant but with an HEA.
The female lead is barely getting by when her sister brings the news that the loan sharks their late father owed a massive amount of money are threatening their mother and their pet.
She had attended an event where her friend works and learned of an upcoming auction which might be the only way to pay down the debt and protect her family.
The male lead initially outbid others to claim her out of revenge but during the terms of their contract she takes everything he demands and gradually their relationship changes. His demands include some quite explicit actions so be cautious of the trigger warnings. If that’s not a concern, this book is a quick, hot read.
I appreciate the emotional development as both main characters recognize the change in their dynamic toward the end of the contract.
WOW! Readers were warned that this book is not the typical Tess romance. How true this is. I so enjoy reading the books Tess writes and this was no different. I must say this one had me squirm a few times but it was so worth the time to read. Vivian is trying to find her way as a young woman and finds herself thrust into having to find money to pay off her deceased fathers debt with the mob so her mother, sister and their dog don't suffer harm. She decides to join an auction at a local BDSM club to make the money to pay off the debt. She is auctioned to Jeff who has a reputation of his own as a love um and leave um dominant. She agrees to a month of weekends living with his dominance and control. This is their story and how they find a relationship that looks to last longer than their contract. Very different from what I expected.
4.5 stars I struggled a bit with what to rate this story. It was super intense, really pulls you in, and really makes you root for Vivian especially. She is in a tough spot and none of it is her fault. But she’s willing to do anything for her family. Jeff is a jerk. Absolutely he is. But he did grow on me. I really came to root for him as well, and wanted him to move past hurts as well. They deserved the happily ever after they got. It was dirty and steamy and kinky. Everything was going great until the blow up between them. I really wish Jeff would have apologized. Yes he did things to try to make up for it, but he never actually said the words. Vivian didn’t need them but I did. 😄 still super good and would recommend for people who like their romance a bit morally corrupt.
I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
As Tess Summers has admitted, this is a departure from her usual style. And the foreword claims that if you’re a person who needs trigger warnings, you probably shouldn’t read this book. All of that is true. The debauchery in this book is quite a bit MORE than what we’re used to reading from this author. BUT…
It was really good! It’s a short story, but it doesn’t feel too rushed. There’s enough background information to understand the characters and their motivations. Really, I don’t love it when a male dominant calls his partner a sl*t or wh*re, so that part of this book did put me off a little, but no other part was offensive to me…even if it maybe should have been?? I’m not sure what that says about me, but as the best friend in the story says, “You’re allowed to like what you like.”
So, Tess, I hope you continue with this series! I want to read Grayson’s story next!
Kinky Fast Paced BDSM Romance Vivian was intrigued and intimidated by Jeff when she goes to Velvet Underground, an up-scale sex club, with her friend that works there. Her friend tells her to stay away from him though. He has a cruel streak. When she allows herself to be auction to the highest bidder at Velvet Underground to get money to pay off her deceased Dad’s debts, he is the highest bidder and the debauchery begins. Tess Summers was right when she said this one is dark, filthy and a little twisted. It is a different story than I have come to expect from Tess Summers, but I was captivated from page one and could not put it down. Looking forward to more of the “San Diego After Dark” Series. I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.
Highest Bidder by Tess Summers is a story about Vivian who works as a stripper just getting by each day. Her younger sister tells her a loan shark came to visit and threatened her family over her dead father's debt. So Vivian decides to join an auction at a sex club where her friend works. Jeff bids on her to get even with her because she rejected him at a previous event. Jeff's behavior is both cruel and brutish which makes him hard to like, but for some reason, Vivian gets off on this behavior. The unlikely situation results in love for the couple and they get their happily ever after. This is a well written and well developed story despite how short it is. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Highest Bidder is the first book in the new San Diego After Dark series. Over the years I have read several series by Tess Summers and enjoyed them. So getting to read the first book in a new series made me excited and hopeful that it would be a great read....which it was in some ways and was not quite there for me in others. Be ready for more than a little bit of nasty and some scenes that for me just did not sit right. I am going to continue to read the series as I really hope the MMC's in the next books will be a like more likeable and not want to to punch them in the nutz multiple times. Even though this book may not have been totally for me it may be for other readers, so I suggest you pick it up and make up your own mind.
Vivian loves her family and will do anything to protect them even selling herself at auction. Jeff’s ego is astronomical and buying her will teach her a lesson. Tess Summers creates an erotic story that titillates and teases with steamy details of exhibitionism, control, and debauchery. This is fast, naughty, and emotional which surprises Jeff because he never gets attached. I love Vivian’s ability to accept her desires, Jeff’s ability to show compassion, and their bravery to move past their contract and recognize the connection between them is real! I would love more stories about their relationship!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Highest Bidder was surprisingly different from anything else I have read by Tess Summers. She's up front about trigger warning, skip this if you need one. I enjoyed the book. This one is edgy, and I liked the evolution of Jeff and Vivian's relationship. They are two people that have some incredible baggage and needs that many folks likely don't get the why, but plenty of folks that do and as the saying goes, don't yuck someone else's yum. The heat in this one is inferno level! Again, if you're looking for a trigger warning, just leave this one behind.
In the first scenes of this book Jeff comes across as very arrogant - he wants to punish Vivian because she turned him down. After a loan shark threatens her family Vivian is desperate for money to pay off deceased father’s debt. She signs up to be "auctioned" to earn money to pay the loan shark. Jeff buys her contract and is a complete ass. Vivian is attracted to him but tries not to get attached. Lots of humiliation in this book and name calling in the name of kink - not a fan…. He falls for her & pays off the loan shark.. They get their HEA.
Vivian strips for a living - she’s getting by, but her late father’s debt means she needs money fast. Jeff doesn’t think twice about doing the less than honourable thing if it means he’ll get ahead. When Jeff buys Vivian’s time at action, you can bet he’s going to use it darkly and deviantly. This story was delicious in its darkness - there’s plenty of him using her, but she’s surprised at how much she enjoys it. I loved how these two tried so hard not to fall in love yet fell for each other so definitively. A scrumptious read.
I’m on the author email list and she sent multiple warnings about this book. I understand why-I would say her books are romance, but this one was pure smut. If that is what you want, then read this!! It was short, sweet, and delivered exactly what the author promised. The characters are dynamic and the story is believable while being very spicy.
I seriously can’t wait for the next in the series.
I loved reading about Jeff and Vivian. She's signs up for an auction because she needs to pay a debt for her dead father. Or else they will be going after her mom and sister. She ends up with Jeff who buys her in a revenge scheme. He decides he's going to humiliate her and use her. But as usual he starts to fall for her and she for him. But he does something that she thinks is unforgivable at the time. He has to grovel his way back. This was a great read. Loved it and would recommend.
This is a fast paced, very hot read, and I really loved reading about Vivian and Jeff. Jeff is the highest bidder at the auction Vivian is participating in. She desperately needs the money, and he is just acting out of revenge. Turns out to be a great turn of events for both of them, and their future.
It’s just like the author mentioned, not her usual style but: “It was fun to write, and I hope it was fun for you to read!” And fun it was!
A dark, scorching romance set in the world of secret auctions and power games. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.
Vivian sells herself to save her family, never expecting Dr. Jeff’s possessive desire. Their explosive chemistry blurs lines between control and connection.
A fast, steamy read with emotional depth and a provocative edge.
Wow. Not your typical Tess Summers, but I loved it. Tess described this book as "It is dark, morally wrong, legally questionable, and twisted" - it is definitely all of that. And a wonderful story of Vivian who did what she needed to do to help her family. And Jeff who I wanted to slap stilly at the beginning, but as the hero often does, redeems himself. Great story with an HEA, looking forward to the next book.
I knew going in that this wasn’t a typical Tess Summers book and that it wasn’t my usual genre of choice. But I read it anyway. 😊
It’s dark. It’s dirty. It’s not for the faint of heart. But it’s well written, has a good storyline and ends with an HEA.
It’s shows us that everyone is entitled to their likes, dislikes and proclivities without judgement from others. And that they can be respectful members of society.
Handsome, Rich, and full of dominant attitude. What more could a great story need? Perhaps a woman deeply in debt who needs to sell herself to make money to pay off some of those debts. But when he buys her, with revenge as the intention, will she stay and fulfill the contract or leave broken and poor?
Once again, Tess Summers hits it out of the ballpark! This is such a great story!
Doctor to the Rescue Oh my, the heat between Jeff and Vivian is extreme! You’d need a fire hose to put out these flames! When a loan shark threatens her family there’s only one thing to do, enter a high end auction to make some cash. But when the hunky Doctor that she turned down the other night has the winning bid, the sparks will fly and ignite everything around! Whoo, hot times!
Vivian is in need of money to pay off debt left when her dad died so she auctions herself at the club where Jeff is a member. He’s not about to let her go to anyone else and he’s determined to make her his. Is there a HEA or is this just a “transaction”?? Read to find out! An excellent, very steamy, and fast read.
