This book depicts the life and career of Scott Hoying, Grammy Award-winning cofounder of Pentatonix, as seen by his mother Connie. More than just a book about her son’s life, Connie tells a heartfelt story of perseverance, dedication to music, LGBTQ+ acceptance, and supportive parenting.
Connie mixes personal experiences about raising Scott and his two siblings with an account of his life—from Scott's childhood in Texas and coming out in high school to meteoric rise to fame with Pentatonix and, finally, married life. As a child, Scott was a musical prodigy. Connie shares what influenced him as a kid, his early musical successes and failures, and the ways she fostered a creative environment along with hard-won lessons as a mother of three. She candidly recounts Scott’s coming out process in high school, including her initial mistakes and concerns along the way but also her journey to understanding and allyship. She details the unlikely formation and explosion of Pentatonix—from their start on The Sing-Off and initial setbacks to incredible success—as well as Scott’s solo work and the duo act Superfruit with Mitch Grassi.
Connie concludes with a reflection on the wonderful, authentic life Scott and his husband Mark Manio have created for themselves and the support & choices that led up to that moment. Along with a foreword by Scott, the book also includes a QR code to an original, previously unreleased song “Pray” which covers themes related to Scott's coming out story.

Connie Hoying, Mom of Scott Hoying, has written the definitive biography about his life and career. I've been a fan of Pentatonix for many years, so I was excited to read about Scott's life. In "The Untold Story of Scott Hoying, Pentatonix Star", his Mom details his childhood and how he became interested in music in the first place. She then shares how the group Pentatonix was formed, as well as Scott's feelings about speaking out on his sexuality. I really appreciated that Scott's parents have been so supportive, both of his career and his relationships. It was fun to read about how Scott Hoying and Pentatonix became the superstars that they are today.

This book is such a beautiful blend of biography, parenting insight, and personal reflection. I laughed out loud, teared up, rooted for Scott, and felt proud right along with you, Connie. The way you wove in songs and photos brought everything to life and made me feel like I was right there with you. Even the stories I’d heard before felt deeper and more meaningful through your eyes. It was so special to read about the Hoying family’s values and the little moments that helped shape who Scott is today. So well written—huge congratulations!

An obvious must read for Pentatonix fans!
What makes this book truly special is how it highlights not just the achievements, but the personal growth, struggles, and triumphs that shaped Scott’s story. Also it’s written by his mom, how special is that?!

was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and safe to say I absolutely loved it!
Anyone who knows me knows i’ve been a fan of Scott for years and getting to read the story of how he grew up was definitely a super cool and new way to hear the story of Pentatonix and what brought them together.
Super inspiring and uplifting story and I definitely it’s a great read for parents of queer children who might not totally understand the LGBTQ+ community. It’s very refreshing to hear a story of unconditional love and support for your children and i’ll definitely be recommending this one for ages. <3
