Dive into this fun and informative middle grade nonfiction book, which outlines the many important scientific discoveries that aided the Alvarezes in their search for answers.

Cretaceous earth was known as the age of dinosaurs. But really, it was the age of LIFE--scaled and feathered, furry and leathered, budding, blooming, roaring, zooming, buzzing, glorious LIFE--until...

DOOMSDAY.

For 66 million years, the mystery of what happened to the dinosaurs lay hidden under layers of sand and silt, until scientists began to piece together the puzzle of what happened on the last day of the ancient world.

Follow the real-life adventures of father-son scientists Luis and Walter Alvarez--along with an army of science detectives--as they unlock the world's most intriguing mystery. Learn how the smallest particles in the universe helped explain what happened to the largest animals that ever walked the planet. Track the timelines of discoveries that had to happen in physics, paleontology, astronomy, and geology, before humans could understand how and why 75 percent of species suddenly went extinct.

This is the story of how scientists add to the sum total of human knowledge, one question at a time, and help us understand our beautiful, tragic, and magnificent world.

so we’ve all heard of that iconic meteor, but how do we KNOW that’s how dinosaurs went extinct?? 🧐🦕 this middle grade read mixes graphic & narrative nonfic to go on a riveting journey showing how scientists tackled this big question & helped us better understand this big ol’ rock we’re living on 🌎

if ever there was a book that was PERFECT for my job, this would be it!!!! & perfect timing too: i got this book from @hearourvoicestours while teaching fossils, rock cycle, & plate tectonics units 🤯 (you can swipe for a lil quiz & lmk how YOU would do in my 7th grade science class hehe)

the blend of content, processes, & history in the book highlights how scientific knowledge is always evolving, requires collaboration, & relies on ample evidence. my list of things i want kids to take away from my class (besides the standards blah blah) would be exactly those 3 big ideas 🙌🏼

i also really appreciated how the book explains how the scientific community, which likes to tour an air of neutrality & lack of bias, has been incredibly exclusive towards marginalized groups

on the content side: this book is thoroughhhh 🧠 readers of any age interested in dinos, geology, or science of kind will be totally immersed. i can already think of which students will be snatching this book right out of my classroom library 📚

overall, this was engaging, accessible, & just so dang interesting!!! 🦖☄️

I am very much a 36 year old woman and not a middle schooler but I enjoyed every page of this one! I was very impressed with the credit to women as they were paleontologists as well but rarely given rightful credit for their work and contributions. I absolutely love the photos and found them to be important to the information. Then you have the graphic novel portions of this which I thought was a great touch, appealing to so many types of readers. The illustration work on the graphics is incredible and beautifully detailed to capture the readers eye. Such great vocabulary as I even was learning words along the way that they carefully explained after its use.

Chapters are broken down into subsections which make for good stopping points which can help readers who find long chapters daunting. Finding little break sections like talking about science word roots is such a good use of space and allows for the reader to take further understanding outside of this book. I love the various forms of presenting the information, really wonderful work. I finished this in one day that’s how much it engrossed me.

Thoroughly presented differing opinions, debates, hypotheses which I feel is so important with this topic as it is still controversial to this day. I love how they confirm this is a never ending discovery where new evidence comes up all of the time. That’s the pretty cool thing about science is it’s never truly done. Nothing is set in stone and scientists continue their important work and that will continue for years to come. Such a cool book that I know a middle schooler is going to fall in love with! Can’t wait to share this with a middle school teacher to share with their classes! #goodreadsgiveaway

Written by a science teacher and presented in a hybrid format, this nonfiction narrative book opens with a history of the study of paleontology, then discusses many questions posed, discoveries made, hypotheses researched, and conclusions determined by scientists over time.

This gives the reader a solid understanding of the topic. Then it shifts the focus to the research done by father-son team Luis and Walter Alvarez and how they proved Luis’ hypothesis that it was, indeed, an asteroid that wreaked havoc with life on Earth billions of years ago. The book finishes with mind-blowing new discoveries and hypotheses that have been made since the 2004 in digs started in the Hell Creek formation in Montana and North Dakota. (Personally, I found this section the most exciting in the book.) Use of frames and a graphic format throughout make it easier to fill in details via flashback history, while the current time thread is carried through in the text block.

Use of side bars, B&W captioned photos, graphs and charts, and quotations break up the text and add depth to the topic. It opens with a Table of Contents and reminder of the scientific process and closes with a glossary of terms, source notes and endnotes by chapter, and an index.

Highly recommended grades 5-9.

My child has asked me about how dinosaurs became extinct, and I’ve never had a particularly detailed answer. Well…after reading this book, that has definitely changed! This book offers so much detail about the scientific process that led to the information we have about dinosaur extinction. The science-minded middle grade readers out there are going to devour this one!

“In science, every answer is a path to new questions.”

It was really cool to read about how many scientists came together to make this discovery, and how their collaboration (and relentless questioning!) is all an important part of the scientific process.

I also really appreciated the mention of the importance of this research to the climate change that we are currently facing. (Although this is also pretty terrifying…)

Highly recommend this one for all the science lovers out there! It’s fascinating stuff!

👦🏻reviews: my mom told me that I was once obsessed and an aficionado about dinosaurs. I had many toy creatures of every different sizes and shapes from T-Rex to triceratops until I started kindergarten. Well, this book definitely helped me remember some important points about these extinct creatures and the fossils they left behind. It featured and highlighted some interesting details and the reasoning to their demise. Also this one has covered many illustrations and pictures to make the book more engaging and fascinating. I really liked this one because it gave plenty of depth and facts about what the father and son scientists uncovered and shared about what they had investigated and unveiled. For kids who are curious about dinosaurs this is a perfect opportunity to learn and explore.

The Doomsday Detectives is a middle grade non-fiction book, that packs so many wonderful elements into its pages that it’s hard to list them all! For starters, the structure of this book deserves an A+. For my son if he loves a book he becomes obsessed, but getting him to that point is sometimes a challenge. The Doomsday Detectives start by encouraging its readers to think like a scientist and then you are immediately introduced to the dramatic graphic novel portion. Followed by chapters of explaining important historical discoveries, and the amazing impact that Walter and Luis Alvarez had.

It can often be very difficult as kids get older to foster that love of non-fiction titles and especially history. The Doomsday Detectives is an excellent tool to capture your child’s attention and help encourage their love of science, especially dinosaurs!

Thank you Lee & Low Books for the advanced reading copy of this great book. This very thoroughly researched and well written book includes graphic novel elements and would appeal to upper elementary and middle school students. It follows the father and son scientists team on their real life adventure to answer the question of why the dinosaurs went extinct by clearly explaining the research process and combining the discoveries in physics, astronomy, geology, and paleontology to help us understand why and how the extinction occurred. There are extensive notes and bibliography (multiple sources) at the end of the book.
I’m looking forward to sharing this book with my science teacher colleagues and recommend it to those with an interest in this topic and science in general.

How did dinosaurs disappear? How were their bones discovered?

Father and son, Luis & Walter Alvarez participate in the investigating this major mystery along with other amazing scientists. We all learn that Doomsday is what demolished dinosaurs, but what were the specifics and how did scientists discover that?

This book takes you through the entire scientific process of questioning everything, creating hypothesis, and backing up those theories. While this book may be for middle schoolers, I truly appreciated this book as my younger self didn’t care to read about any of this. This book explains everything in a simple and interesting way that really helps one understand what happened.

I highly recommend this book for middle schoolers and up! It’s such an interesting book that had both written chapters with some graphic novel parts.

Father and son were on a quest to explore various aspects of scientific research, including the extinction of dinosaurs. Many theories were tested, and by the end of the book…even I was a believer.

This is not a book that I would normally pick up, but I’m glad that I did. I learned a thing or two about paleontology in the process. If you have a friend or loved one that is into archaeology, paleontology, etc., I would recommend this book for them.

There is so much information in this amazing book. The format (illustrations, photos, comic page style among the text) makes it easy to follow and understand, making reading fun and dynamic. Marry Anning is just a few pages (among other amazing information), but I hadn't heard about her, so I was amazed by her story and of her dog. There is even a statue that was inaugurated in 2022. Amazing book to have in any classroom or library.

I really enjoyed the last third of this book because it was really about the science of figuring out how the dinosaurs died without all the overlapping plot of family relations and education. I will say, I appreciated the background in the beginning so I understood all the different scientific issues. But it didn't really pay off until that last third. Hand this to your historians and scientists who aren't afraid of small text and wouldn't mind some graphic panels.

I'm not gonna say I liked this book, because most of it wasn't even related to dinosaurs. This book is about different scientists that studied dinosaurs from the past. The first half of the book wasn't even related to Walter and Luis Alvarez and yes, I read that little tag from the title page that drags into the cover of the book, which said "other scientists", LOOK AT THE TITLE. 2 star. Not a good book. Don't recommend.

This well-researched book about the history of dinosaur hunting is jam-packed with information, and well suited to readers who are obsessed with all things dinosaur. The graphic novel style chapters will draw in even more readers. This is a decent length for middle grade narrative nonfiction (224 pages) and includes plenty of source notes.

I applaud the choice to use graphic panels to introduce each chapter. I think more kids nonfiction should have this sort of engaging structure. The text, however, I found to be on the opposite end of the engagement spectrum. Unless a kid is really into geology, I’m not sure they will persist in reading about topics like isotopes, catastrophism, and ocean acidification.
