King of Omen

Rate this book

Soon after I first locked eyes with him, Lorenzo Calibrese commanded his bodyguard to kick me out of church.
The next time I saw him was when I walked right into the middle of an execution in his house.
Now I'm trapped.
I can’t escape this unholy-made man.
There's no turning back now, not after what I’ve seen.

We're forced together until the world is safe for us.
He’s Italian Mafia, ruthless, heartless, cold.
The King of Omertà and an omen that my world is about to change.
He’s also something else—sexy as hell.
Freakin' possessive too.
I should run the second he puts his sinewed, sensual, scorching hands all over my body.
I shouldn’t let him tear my clothes off. But I do.
He’s going to break me. He’s going to own every inch of my flesh.
He demands complete obedience, and I want to resist, I do.
But my rebellious heart won’t let me.
This isn’t the first time I’ve been at the mercy of a dangerous man, but this time, I might not live long enough to tell the tale.

I’ve never wanted to own a woman as much as I want to own her.
She’s the picture of innocence, enticing me from under her wide-brim hat.
Then, committing the unimaginable sin beside me.

I have to keep her in my hold. I won't let her go.
I’m obsessed with her lilac eyes, cupid lips, and those curves.
I can’t wait to make her beg for mercy.
To cry out my name when I steal her heart.
She thinks she can charm me into letting her go.
But she doesn’t know me. She doesn’t realise I will burn the whole world down for her.
F$ck her boy toy, I’ll become her King.

From bestselling author Sky Gold comes the angsty and spicy start to the Kings of Omertà series, featuring forced proximity and a ruthless, possessive alpha mafia boss who will fight and grovel for his happily ever after with his independent and fierce obsession.

This was a no for me. I DNF'ed at 62%.

Let me start with the positive: I really liked the concept of the Omerta. I thought it was an interesting concept, had great potential as a storyline. However, this is not what it's labelled as: it is not dark, and not forced proximity. Yes, it is in her best interest to stay there, but he by no means forces her to stay- in fact he lets her go the minute she wants to.

And just a personal note: the proofreading- yeesh.

I'm in a book slump to end all book slumps 😭😭😭😭 yet another DNF

His gravelled command was adulterated with sultriness and underscored by steel like a man not used to being told no.

Is it just me or am I reading this like the author is throwing a dictionary at me?☝🏿 I think I'm reasonably intelligent but this isn't what I'm looking for in my romance read right now. I feel like I'm slugging through the book because it's so word heavy 🤷🏿‍♀️

That cover is epic AF and I hope I can come back to this series.

Premise of book ✅
Potential ✅
aaannnnnd that’s it…. 23% and that’s it
very rarely I dnf a book… I’m one of those that has to finish. I just couldn’t. The writing is weird… eaither AI wrote this, The book was translated from a different language to English (horribly might I add) or the writer got mixed up and didn’t know which century she wanted to write in.

MMC does not talk like typical mafia or an Italian at that

“Brothers, something is boiling in the pot. A plot against us is underway, and we’re sitting ducks,’ I rasped to my siblings.

‘We can’t divest in peace while still living in a city where our former partners are planning our demise, the cops are in with the mafia, and the streets are blood baths.’

‘ Should it find its way to us, be advised we won’t hesitate to make it go away, with permanent efficacy.’

‘They can freakin’ wait,’ I ground out. ‘I have no wish to fake it as Don Corleone and have them genuflect and kiss my hand.

MFC how she talks:
‘Why the fuck did you chase me through the mountains?’

‘The hired?- Fuck, you’re a trip.’

‘Who I am doesn’t matter because, according to you, I’m not family enough. Now get the hell out.’

How she thinks ….

I yearned to hear his rumbled bass in my ear. To feel his sinewed hands on my skin and the scorching heat of his passion and intensity

How she writes letters

‘Thank you for returning what I thought was lost forever. I appreciate your gesture and the effort you put into finding me. You went above and beyond, and I am touched and grateful. Please know that I will treasure the necklace even more now, imbued with the memory of our fleeting meeting. Perhaps our paths will cross again someday, under different circumstances. Until then - Mia.’

I burst out in giggles, scrambling for his kerchief, which I clapped to my mouth to stop my chortle from reaching the house.

Loved, Loved, Loved, this Book...Makes me say Hmm...

I loved Mia and Lorenzo Calibrese's story. Lorenzo and his brothers and his consigliere are Omerta' . He comes from Naples, Italy for the funeral of his Aunt Bianca who was the head of the family after his parents and his uncle who was Bianca's husband died in a car 🚗 bombing. There was so much angst, secrets, lies and betrayal. I love romantic Mafia stories and this one was really good. I am ready to read the next story in this series.

This series was very interesting. It had several storylines and plots and they each kept this reader on edge to the very end. Family was always important and friendships were valued. Harm only came to you when you attacked the family structures. Then it was game time and they played to win everything. Finding true love along the journey was an added benefit and bonus. Looking forward to reading the other series

Disappointed

The storyline had me hooked at the beginning and flowed well until 62%…then 67% the train went off the rails. This had a lot of potential but I skimmed the rest and left throughly disappointed.

I like this but it's not what it says it is

Ok let's look at how it's billed DARK no way I've dead a hell of a lot worse which isn't billed as dark. MAFIA emmmm ok ive never read a mafia book as tame as this one! Nor one where the hero has to enlist other people to save her?? That stuff is always in house lastly FORCED proximity yes they do have to live together but is it "forced" I say NO at no point is she forced to stay she's not angry about being there and the minute she wants to leave he lets her so unfortunately a star is take to reflect these.
However even though this is really mild and surprising for a mafia I did like it. I found both the characters likeable and the romance very sweet and I would read more so 4 stars.

It's a good book. I am not a huge mafia fan, I did like the story, and the characters had their flaws.

Lorenzo is used to getting what he wants. Either by fear, intimidation, or desire. Mia is a strong, independent woman who has escaped a dark past. What happens when her attraction will pull her into Lorenzo's dark underworld and into the very situation she never wanted to be part of.

The one let down in this book for me is Lorenzo does not quite live up to bad reputation and need help mostbof the time. This is an interesting story, and I am more interested in the things to come.

Ok read for me. There are definitely some moments that have the touch-her-and-die vibes. Some tender moments, some spice. I did love the part were we find out she's the daughter of the local MC gang. Nothing really overtly stood out to me so I will not be reading the rest of the series. I feel like this was a book tok flop that drew me in with one liners on social media and did not really deliver.

DNF 41% through.

I tried on and off for 3 days. The long drawn-out explanations, irrelevant overly detailed descriptions, and lengthy internal monologues were absolutely not for me. I'm a mood reader, so once I have to check the page count, you've lost me. I checked probably a dozen times.

If you enjoy super detailed stories, this would be for you.

I almost didn't finish this book. From 50% to 75% (approx), there was no plot movement, and the book focused solely on consecutive sex scenes and redundant, sappy dialogue. When the author finally returned to the mafia story line, it remained superficial and predictable in addition to the book not being edited. Very disappointing.

Not that dark.

I do like this story. But it's not dark , and Mia is not really forced to stay with Lorenzo. I like the main characters. There are steamy and action scenes. This is a stand-alone story. I will be reading the next book.

Good story…poor proofreading

Please proofread carefully! It is extremely hard to read and get into the story with all the grammatical and spelling errors! The characters are great just the mechanics of the writing need more care.

it was ok

Nothing spectacular about this story. Mafia man leaving it behind. Attempts to kill him. Finds girls. Falls I love in a second. She tough. Independent. Free. He’s possessive. Controlling. Hea!

Overuse of "tagged"

I enjoyed the book, but the term tagged was used 40+ times. Its jarring. I suggest alternative words? Tagged isn't in normal vernacular and ive read hundreds of books

Whew!!

Too many adjectives. You had to plow through all the discriptions to get to the actual story. The story was pretty good after you waded through all the other stuff.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it will be my last. The synopsis was promising, but that’s all the positives I can say. The characters were one dimensional and boring. Their conversations were very stilted. Their love story, and actually the whole story was oh hum. The “suspense” was so transparent I figured it out long before the big reveal. I found the book so boring I almost chose to DNF it, but since I paid for it I forced myself to finish it … although the last 30% to 40% I skimmed so I could move on to something I actually enjoyed reading. The best character in the book was a secondary character, the FMC’s father - wish he was in it more.
