I waited 3 fricken years for this—ONLY FOR IT TO BE RELEASED ON MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY AND I DIDN’T KNOW?! I’m one month late, I know! Still, every page (186 in total!) is the number of times I prostrated to my conjured vision of sensei because that’s how thankful I am! My babies, finally—my babies and their happily ever after. They are so in love that’s why I adore them! The relationship is just so healthy that I cried! The family matters made me emotional too. This is a very fitting conclusion to the story that never died in my bl-invaded world. Thank you so much, sensei!

Not all queer stories need to have a coming out storyline, and in fact, I'd argue that they're often overused. But Kanade finally coming out to his dad is handled perfectly, right down to the pain Kanade feels at not living up to his father's expectations for his future.

Ah, I seriously loved this! I think this is the best volume in the whole series. The chapter where Kanade comes out to his family about his sexuality really got my heart racing—it was emotional, touching, and honestly a relief all at once. Especially his conversation with his dad, that part hit me hard.

I love this series so much. It's definitely a favorite, and while it feels complete in this volume, I'd look forward to any possible future installments.

I think the thing I love most is how realistic the families are. It's not a simple "yes parents good" or "ew parents bad" scenario - both Mashiro and Kanade have very complicated relationships with parents whom they love deeply but can't entirely be themselves around. That's a very real part of growing up, especially if you're someone who doesn't fit into the "normal" boxes of what adulthood is supposed to look like.

There's a little bit with Mashiro's mother in this volume; I appreciate that while nothing is fully resolved (or can ever be, in a relationship that complicated and strained), there is definite progress. Mashiro is standing up for himself more now, staying firm with his mother and then showing gratitude when she apologizes instead of straying into guilt territory. And it's nice to see his mother really, genuinely trying to be a better mother, with the narrative still showing how hard that is for her.

Much of the emotional focus of this volume is on Kanade's past and his family, which is what I was really hoping for. Again, there's a lot that simply isn't black or white. Mashiro is right to feel upset about being "invisible" to his boyfriend's family. He has serious trauma from losing his father, and he gets a panicky level of upset over phone calls from family or the idea of something happening to Kanade and him not being able to do anything or be told anything because he doesn't "exist."

At the same time, Kanade's right to make his own choices about what he feels comfortable sharing with his family, and knowing what he can and can't emotionally handle from them. Especially his father.

The situation with Kanade's father is painful and really, really good. What I love most is that they don't resolve anything! Not really. Their conversation on their walk is so interesting because his father is showing such a strong effort to understand him "in his own way," by reading books about gay people (that Kanade's mother must've been buying once she started realizing her son was a little different from the other boys). I expected this to turn into a typical heartwarming moment, but Kanade started yelling instead.

Was it the best reaction? Honestly, I don't know. They probably could've smoothed things over in that moment, with Kanade being grateful that his father is working on his ideas of what men are supposed to be like, and still being fully okay with him coming home for visits, etc. But Kanade is so tired of trying to be nice about things - the dutiful son who stays quiet and tries his best to be the person his father wanted him to be.

His father loved him as a little baby and wanted to protect him and raised him the best way he knew how. That's all wonderful. He loved his son, and Kanade loved his father. That doesn't negate the fact that Kanade felt stifled and wrong and afraid for most of his life, because he couldn't fit into the box his father was setting up for him. And his father often said cruel things to him - about him not being manly enough, about him crying too easily, all these hurtful comments that can't be wiped away just by saying "oh yes I loved you though."

So Kanade snaps. He's angry because his father shouldn't have to read a book to understand his own son. Being gay hasn't changed him in any way. He's not some textbook case to study, and his experiences aren't the same as whoever wrote or was written about in those books. Was it a nice thought, and a genuine attempt from his father? Yeah. But it's still incredibly hurtful to Kanade, and it's the kind of rant and reaction I don't think I've seen in BL before.

This just feels like a really genuine story that gets so much about the complexities of family relationships.

Mashiro and Kanade aren't perfect, either; I loved the bliss of them moving in together, followed swiftly by realizing how awful it is to share a space and chores with another person who's so different from you. (Although I find Kanade's insistence on daily laundry completely absurd, who does that??)

But even through their fights and the bickering, there's such a depth of friendship and love and commitment and I adore it. I loved how Mashiro offered his support with Kanade's father and made Kanade feel really safe and like he truly has a home and a space to be himself, regardless of what happens with his family. But I like that Mashiro gently encourages Kanade to not cut himself off from his family, because he can see how much Kanade values them.

"If it doesn't work out, I'll be here for you, but give your family a chance, because you want them in your life," he says, and is able to encourage Kanade to build a little bridge while being honest about his feelings and his past hurt. Just like Kanade did with him in the previous volume.

There's too much to talk about, really. It's such a wonderful series.

Me encantaron.

This was a lovely volume. Kanade was finally able to come out to his family and start moving on from his past. While his father seems shocked and disappointed that his son will never have kids like he did, he seems to genuinely want to understand who is son is in a somewhat ignorant kind of way, but that is progress. His mum seems to have always had her suspicions, so she takes the whole situation in stride. Also, Mashiro's relationship with his mother appears to be improving. She seems to now be properly medicated, has a job of her own, has decided to stop taking money from Mashiro, and his grandmother seems to be keeping a much better eye on her. The boys are happy, and that is what we want to see, so I'm curious to see what life has in store for them in the next volume.

Poor Kanade isn't getting much of a break from his panic, but there are several breakthroughs in this volume. Kanade and Mashiro end up visiting their hometown for the summer, both to see their families (separately) and to go to a school reunion. Seems there may have been some reason for Kanade's worry over Mashiro meeting his family, but not entirely either as he still has some solid support there, too. Mashiro has his own share of surprises from his mother as well, though they aren't as high impact as Kanade's. For all that the trip down memory lane seemed rather sad and disheartening at first, it seems visiting home might not be all that bad after all.

Cried AGAIN. Idk the family stuff just makes me so emotional :') I also did just start my period literally today so that's definitely adding to it all.

This one started out kind of rocky because of the arguing and I know it's building their relationship or whatever, but it made me upset!! I think that's the main reason I didn't like this one as much as the previous ones. I didn't like all the arguments, but god the ending kind of made it all worth it. I feel like if I were to reread it I would bump up the rating, but right now a 3.5 feels right.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I’m glad that Kanade and Mashiro got the happy ending that they deserved. I really enjoyed learning more about Kanade through his family making an appearance and even bits of his high school years that weren’t shown previously. The moments between Kanade and his father, while realistic, were tough to read happen. I also found it nice to see that despite her faults, Mashiro’s mother was making an effort to be better for Mashiro.
Overall, this was a nice and hopeful way to end a cute manga series.

what the heck this volume was good? I was ready to give up on this perfectly-mid series after the first two volumes but the way the author handled familial and romantic conflicts in this one was so to my liking….

If I remember this series exists by the time the next volume comes out, I’ll read it.

I really liked this volume, because we got to see Kanade and Mashiro deal with struggles and how things aren't always going to be easy and full of sunshine. I liked how they argued and then came back to discuss what was going on with them and how they can work through it. I died over them going back to their small hometown and how Kanade hadn't told his family about being queer or living with a man, and how his father caught him with Mashiro and how Kanade came out to his mom and sister and how accepting they were. I died over Kanade defending Mashiro to his mom. I love how these two are there for each other with one another's families. They are so great together, and I really love watching them grow as a couple.
