Gazing out at the snow cascading down to blanket the town, I’m struck by how something so bright and beautiful holds a darkness inside, a danger for those caught in its path where one small slip up can be devastating. Society is depicted much the same in the works of Edith Wharton, where the glitz and glamour of high society holds a darkness that dismisses those of whom they disapprove and barrs the way for anyone caught outside its circle. New Year’s Day, a brief novella from Wharton originally published in 1890, takes critical aim at a 19th century New York society eager to sensationalize scandal and inflict judgement upon those involved. Yet appearances can be deceiving and Wharton expertly details the affair of Lizzie Hazeldean—caught with her lover in The Fifth Avenue Hotel when a fire caused occupants to flee—from a remove built on assumptions and half evidence before flipping the script with a hidden truth. Examining the expectations and lack of opportunities afforded women in 19th century society, New Years Day is a gorgeously crafted story of reputation rocked by scandal, the complexities of sacrifice and the gap between public perception and personal motivations.

Yet, as we learn from Lizzie, the affair may have been less of a sensual scandal and more a necessity for survival. ‘You thought I was a lovelorn mistress,’ she chides, revealing her actions may have been in pursuit of love for her husband but her options were limited due to the lack of financial mobility afforded to women who were denied an existence beyond being an accessory to men.
This revelation, late in the plot, highlights Wharton’s skill for misdirection that forces the reader to re-examine their own assumptions and judgements and consider how, like the harsh gatekeepers of society, that snap judgements may be flawed and founded in half-truths.
That the narrator is a man, and a rather naive one at that, furthers the commentary into criticisms of patriarchy and the unequal moral judgements on sexuality that are harsher and more restrictive of women. While Lizzie is doomed into a ‘cold celibacy’ of adulthood, Wharton asks us to consider how her actions, which many might judge her for, are an incisive criticism of the ways a woman is shamed for being manipulative despite having few other avenues to assert herself. Is she a cold, calculating gold digger as a moral defect or merely a product of a society that backed her into a corner? While Lizzie is misrepresented as unlearned and dull by her depiction as being uninterested in the books her husband keeps around the house, we see she is quite adept at the ability to ‘read hearts.’ She can use the lusts of predatory men to her advantage, yet only she faces the harsh judgement for exercising her sexuality.
A quick read with an exacting purpose of social critiques, New Year’s Day succinctly showcases Wharton’s signature skills. An excellent little tale on reputation, social retribution, yet, at the heart of it, a tale about the complications of love under duress.

"New Year's Day" is the last of four novellas in Edith Wharton's collection "Old New York". Set in 1870s New York City, it shows the predicament of Lizzie Hazeldean, a young woman in high society who has no way of earning her own money. Her husband is weak with a heart condition. Lizzie is seen coming out of a hotel on New Year's Day and society matrons start to talk about her. Lizzie's story is scandalous and sad, but it is also filled with a great love. Edith Wharton is known for her writings about women making difficult decisions while dealing with the unwritten laws of high society.

De nuevo Edith Wharton no defrauda y sabe sacar punta a la alta sociedad neoyorquina de los años veinte mejor que nadie. En un pequeño relato de apenas 140 páginas, la autora sabe jugar con el lector y le muestra de frente los prejuicios y la hipocresía que incluso a día de hoy siguen vigentes en la sociedad. Todo comienza con un simple cotilleo del que se lleva hablando ya un tiempo; que Lizzie y Henry están teniendo una aventura. Ella es una mujer casada, cuyo marido sufre una enfermedad cardíaca y él es un joven soltero muy cotizado en los círculos sociales. El día de año nuevo se les ve salir juntos del Hotel Quinta Avenida y el secreto es demasiado obvio para ignorarlo por más tiempo.
Nos metemos de lleno en rumores, habladurías y damos por sentado las mismas cosas que los personajes. La autora nos deja ver lo fácil que resulta manipular la opinión pública y lo poco que nos preocupamos por conocer realmente a las personas y sus circunstancias. Ya lo ha conseguido en Ethan Frome y en La Solterona y lo ha vuelto a hacer. Creo que Edith Wharton es una maestra de los buenísimos y sorprendentes finales. Es un magnífico relato que confirma que la autora se está convirtiendo rápidamente, en una de mis autoras favoritas. Una pequeña joya.

Fantàstica primera lectura de l'any, tot i que esperava que fos una mica més entretinguda. Edith Wharton és un tresor de les lletres, però a vegades dona mases voltes per arribar a un final. Parlant de finals, el d'aquesta novel·la és una meravella, amb el ritme perfecte que li ha faltat a la resta. Estic molt content amb el llibre i no puc sinó recomanar a tothom que el llegeixi, garanteixo una bona estona.
Com sempre, l'edició de Viena és estupenda, tot i que aquesta vegada se'ls hi ha passat una errata garrafal cap al final del llibre. Es perdona per la gran feina que fan sempre. La traducció és una mica pesada al principi, però després arrenca i es torna més lleugera i fàcil de llegir.

«¡Libre! Sí, por descontado: ¡libre! ¿No lo ves? ¿No comprendes que pretendo seguir siendo libre?».
Edith Wharton nunca decepciona (al menos, a mí). Una vez más, la autora nos traslada a la Nueva York de finales del siglo XIX para hablarnos de los convencionalismos sociales, la falsedad y la hipocresía de la alta sociedad y el papel de la mujer en la época.
En este caso, se centra en la figura de Lizzie Hazelwood, una mujer de la alta sociedad cuyo marido está enfermo, a quien se la ve saliendo del hotel Quinta Avenida acompañada de un soltero muy reconocido. Y aquí es donde empiezan las preguntas que dan lugar a las habladurías: ¿estaban juntos en el hotel? ¿Sabrá su marido que puede que tenga un amante?
De esta forma, la escritora nos sumerge en una historia en la que nada es lo que parece y vamos a ir, poco a poco, descubriendo por qué estaba con él, la relación que tenía con su marido y los orígenes de Lizzie. Y me ha encantado el retrato psicológico que nos va haciendo de ella a lo largo de las páginas, así como del contexto en el que crece, que privaba a las mujeres de libertad e independencia, sobre todo económica.
A pesar de tenerlo todo en contra, Lizzie es un personaje fuerte e independiente, muy fiel a sus valores, que trata de sobreponerse a lo que la alta sociedad piensa de ella sin apenas conocerla; que trata de dejar de lado, siempre que puede, las normas del decoro pese a lo difícil que es alejarse –con el ostracismo social que esto conlleva.
De esta forma, la novela reflexiona sobre los prejuicios y los convencionalismos sociales, que obligaban a la mujer a casarse y tener un rol únicamente dirigido a los cuidados, al hogar y a las apariencias. Pero, también, sobre la superioridad masculina de la época, que muchas veces escondía todo lo contrario: fragilidad y soledad (como veremos en uno de los protagonistas masculinos).
Lo que más me ha gustado es el retrato tan certero e íntimo que hace de ella otro personaje en primera persona hacia el final de la novela, ya que la mayor parte está contada en tercera persona. Cómo trata de acercarse lo máximo posible a su vulnerabilidad y fragilidad para conocerla profundamente y ser consciente de las dificultades que podía tener una mujer (casi en soledad) en la época.
En resumen, espero que le deis una oportunidad a esta historia porque merece mucho la pena; sobre todo, el retrato psicológico que hace de sus personajes y el papel de la mujer en una sociedad en la que, siempre, tenían las de perder si se salían de lo establecido.

Era una desconocida total de la escritura de Edith Wharton y después de leer «La solterona» me quedé con ganas de más. ¡Y este ha sido aún mejor si cabe!

Començo l’any amb aquesta petita meravella de l’Edith Wharton. “El dia de Cap d’Any” és una història ambientada en l’alta societat de Nova York a principis del segle XX, que es converteix en una crítica a la superficialitat i la hipocresia d’aquest grup social, obsessionat amb les aparences.
Durant una celebració de Cap d’Any, es produeix un incendi en un luxós hotel, però el que fa tremolar la societat novaiorquesa no és aquest succés. Des del seu fastuós menjador, la família Parrett veu com la Lizzie Hazeldean, una dona casada, surt de l’hotel amb un altre home. A partir d’aquí, comença una trama de mentides i mitges veritats que ens endinsa en les motivacions i desitjos dels personatges.
Tot i ser una obra curta, els personatges són molt complexos i alhora estan molt ben definits. Una dona atrapada en un matrimoni sense amor, un home seductor que representa la llibertat i una família que reflecteix l’alta societat. Wharton utilitza un to irònic, detalls i gestos per oferir-nos la seva visió perspicaç d’una classe social a la qual va pertànyer ella mateixa.
És molt interessant la doble moral que exposa l’autora. Es veu com la societat de l’època jutja durament a una dona que trenca amb les normes, mentre que els homes gaudeixen de més llibertat. És la primera vegada que llegeixo a Wharton i se m’ha fet molt curt!

La Lizzie Hazeldean, una dona casada de l’alta societat novaiorquesa és PILLADA fugint d’un hotel, enmig d’un incendi, amb el seu amant. El que no m’esperava gens és que la Lizzie mantingués els seus valors i no es deixés aixafar per la crueltat d’aquesta societat que només li desitja el pitjor, mantenint-de forta i fent-se valer. Un exemple a seguir, sens dubte!!!

This was the best of the 4 short stories in the collection, Old New York. Lizzie is a married woman whose husband has a chronic heart condition that is causing his slow demise. They have never been well-off, he a lawyer and she the daughter of a minister, but they were members of New York society due to their family connections. But one New Year's Day, she is caught red-headed with her lover coming out of the Fifth Avenue Hotel. There had been rumors that she was having an affair with Henry but, in typical Old New York fashion, no one spoke of it until the day that they made themselves too conspicuous for them to ignore. That very night, Lizzie was shunned at a dinner party by members of the New York elite and she knew that her secret is out. But, also that same night, her husband takes a turn for the worst and dies just a few weeks later. After his death, she leaves for Europe to visit her father and does not return for 6 months. Upon her return, she is immediately visited by Henry who offers to marry her. She refuses and says that she never loved him. She was only with him in order to take his money to keep her husband comfortable in his last days, to keep him from worrying about money. She says that she was nothing more than a highly paid prostitute. She never tells anyone else the story and Henry never admits it either because it would prove what a fool she made of him so she remained shunned by society for the rest of her life but she says that she would do it all over again to have those few years with her husband. A true love story!

These novellas have been progressively magnificent—Edith treats each one as a thought experiment, with the characters designed less for storytelling as for the examination of great questions played out among people.
In the first, the question is what do we value? The second, what does family mean? The third is the same question dressed differently—what do we owe to each other? What is right and wrong when measured against our actions toward others? The fourth is so much more targeted: what choice does this type of woman have in this situation? Not just what does she do, but who does she start as and who does she become? What does it mean to not be ruled by the society in which you live? What does it mean to be free, and what are the consequences of that?
These stories feel like sitting with Edith in her “French Chateau reflected in a Massachusetts pond” as Henry James called it, looking out a window and thinking about the world, then *really* thinking out a thought experiment of what those questions look like among the people we know best. They’re satisfying in that way, even if their occupation with the questions above—and perhaps communicating the authors answer to them—makes them somewhat removed from the realm of Pure Literature or writing craft.

Libro muy bien editado por pequeños placeres , nos acerca a través de una sagaz mente femenina , a una sociedad encorsetada como era la del siglo anterior , haciendo una dura crítica a la mentalidad y falsedad de la época . Muy buena novelita de una gran escritora . Comparto algunas frases :
“ Un anhelo perpetuo por revivir el pasado, una necesidad perpetua de explicarse y justificarse : satisfacer esos dos deseos, una vez que se había permitido entregarse a ellos, pasó a ser el lujo de su existencia vacía.”

Un claro retrato de la sociedad de New York de esa época, las cosas que las mujeres no podían o no debían hacer. Había visto una reseña que decía que al final no era lo que uno se imaginaba y claro que fue así, me sorprendió y me pareció la actitud de una mujer que rompe los esquemas sobre todo en esa época. El final no me gustó tanto porque sentí que se desdibujó un poco la historia.
