For my first regency-era book, this was a very fun read! It was everything from my Pride & Prejudice dreams with magic added. It was also much higher stakes than I initially expected, which of course keeps the book interesting. I really liked the characters and, although I suspected the plot twist, I was so curious to see how it played out. Very fun and unique!

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy for review!

Came here from reels, this is really my first romantasy book, and on top of that, it is set in the Regency era, so I do not know a lot about the setting or the conventions of the time. Because of that, I am not really going to be a critic of the historical side of the story. Most of what I am talking about here is just my personal reaction to the characters and the decisions they make.

There are quite a few things from my modern perspective that I really did not like, and some of them felt really weird to me.

First of all, near the beginning, the FMC tries to show off her magic skills to gain the favor of the ML’s sister, because she wants the sister to help her court their cousin. She pushes herself too far and eventually faints. I found that really dumb. I mean, one of the most basic things you should know as an adult is not to push yourself beyond your limits in front of strangers. I understand that she wanted to impress her, but actually, girl, don’t embarrass yourself and create problems for, ummmm, literal strangers.

Later, the cousin she wants to court takes her on a walk and tells her about his previous engagement with one of the ML’s sisters. He says that the ML opposed their engagement, and suggests that it might have been because he was poor and had his father’s debts to deal with. The FMC immediately thinks the ML is proud and judgmental.

This honestly annoyed me because, as someone from South Asia, I understand how complicated marriage can be when money and family are involved, especially in societies where arranged marriages and family expectations are important. If the groom is poor and has serious debts, that can create a very complicated marriage, and people cannot simply walk away from it if things do not work out. Even in a Regency setting, where marriage and society obviously worked differently from today, I can understand why a brother might not want his sister to marry someone who is struggling financially. That is not automatically prideful.

The FMC does not even know the sister’s opinion about the marriage. Maybe she wanted it, maybe she did not. Maybe the ML was being controlling, or maybe he genuinely thought his sister would end up in a difficult situation. The FMC simply does not know enough to decide that he is a terrible and prideful person. If she were just naive, I could understand it, but she is so annoyingly shortsighted about other people’s motives.

Then the cousin comes up with this plan to save the FMC’s father. Apparently, they need a powerful spell that only masters or someone very important can perform, and they need objects that have been touched by the ML. So the FMC decides to become his apprentice in order to secretly get access to his things.

This is where I really started questioning her judgment. You have met this cousin maybe twice, you already think the ML is arrogant and overly proud, and now you are trusting a plan given to you by someone you barely know, which involves secretly taking the ML’s belongings. The very man you accused of being proud minutes ago?! And why would you not fact check any of this first? Why would you not ask the ML directly if he can perform the spell? Maybe he would refuse, but at least you would have asked.

I understand that she wants to save her father, and that is obviously a very serious reason. But desperation does not mean you should immediately trust a stranger and agree to do something unethical. The fact that the spell is illegal should have made this feel even more dangerous to her. Even someone who knows very little about magic should understand that illegal magic, a secret plan, and a person you barely know trying to involve you in it are all reasons to stop and ask questions.

What makes this even stranger is that she was raised by her father, who taught her a few novice spells. But bro, it feels like she lacks knowledge about basic stuff like magic, history, rumours, and a lot of the world in general. I understand why she would not know advanced magical things because she grew up in the country and was isolated from magical society. But magic apparently fascinated her as a child, and her father was not even opposed to her pursuing magic later. So why does she seem to know almost nothing about everything? If she was interested in magic, I would expect at least some curiosity-driven knowledge, even if she did not have formal education. She could have read whatever books were available, or at least remembered stories. She does not know about blood-exchanging magic, but they were protecting against something similar in the reform. It was the talk of the town. It should be basic knowledge for them. Like, girl, if you opened the newspaper for 10 minutes, you would still know.

Being sheltered is one thing, but being this clueless is really problematic. Being young doesn’t excuse it.

There is also the whole situation with Machiavellianism, or the dark spell about manipulation. At first, I could not understand why this magic was treated as inherently unethical when there is a story about the three magical princes which was presented almost as a fairy tale, and fairy tales feature a heroic character, not an antihero or evil protagonist. So, in this story, the second prince had the power of illusion and manipulation, and he apparently used it to influence people’s thoughts and create a group of nobles. And all of the nobility basically uses it for their own gain, so from their perspective, it should be normal, right? Idk, maybe I’m thinking too much.

There is also the situation where the ML’s aunt brings up rumours that the FMC’s mother used dark magic to charm the FMC’s father, which is supposedly why he courted and married her. The aunt herself apparently used the same kind of magic to become a countess. Basically, she is trying to insult the FMC’s mother. But bro, her reaction feels so dramatic. She literally rushes out of the room while crying.

Also, the FMC has already said that she knows very little about her mother, so I found it strange that she became so upset by the insults. I understand being hurt when someone insults your mother, but she does not even know whether the rumour is true. She doesn’t know what qualities her mother possessed. The aunt was clearly trying to provoke her, and the ML had literally warned her beforehand that the aunt would be disagreeable. Therefore her reaction was over the top.

Thankfully, she does not cry for very long. I do think the scene could have been handled much better. She could have defended her by pointing out the fact that the aunt did something bad and admits it, whereas her mother’s case is just a rumour, or she could have calmly told the aunt that she was not interested in discussing rumours about her family.

Then there is actually a conversation where the ML says there is no light side to Machiavellianism, and the FMC thinks that it could be used to create peaceful and fulfilling thoughts in someone who is dying, calm or redirect a patient’s mind during a medical procedure, or even alter painful memories. The ML then says that its true purpose may have been tainted, but that the spell itself is not inherently evil. I think I like this part. Here, the FMC didn’t seem that awfully dumb.

Another thing that makes the romance uncomfortable for me is the ML’s previous fiancée. She died before they could marry, and she was also his apprentice. He does not seem completely moved on from what happened, which is understandable, but now the FMC is also becoming his apprentice. Everyone in society is already saying that she might end up being his next romance, and we all know where that is probably going. And in some later scenes, he is drawing parallels between his ex-fiancée and the FMC.

I know this is a personal preference, but the pattern makes me uncomfortable. It starts to feel like the FMC is being placed into the exact role that the previous fiancée had, rather than being completely separate from her. Maybe the story will handle this well later.

And honestly, one of the problems is that the ML always seems to have the upper hand in their banter. I simply don’t like banter between unequal characters. And At this point, I cannot even blame him, because half the time I am also thinking, ‘Girl, why would you do that? That’s dumb?’

The book has its good parts. The Parliament, reform, and stuff are interesting, but I’m not too sure I like their execution.

But overall, I think I am going to drop this book. The FMC’s decisions are becoming too frustrating for me. The unethical part of her plan with the ML’s belongings especially makes me feel, honestly, disgusted. I do not enjoy reading a romance when I am constantly questioning the main character’s judgment.

Maybe the story gets better later, but honestly, my spirit is tired. I think I am done.

good bad and down right annoying

First, this book was fun. The magic in the world was great and the world building on that front was fun and easy to follow. While this author isn’t the first to merge magic with historical romance (Amanda Quick Arcane series for example), having it exist in the regency era was a delight.

That being said. As an AVID regency fan…there were struggles. Things that a beginner don’t know or probably even care about but…the rest of us do. There only a few rules to Regency and this author broke two of them. One, incorrect usage and understanding of titles and incorrect social rules. Yes, yes I know it sounds petty and petulant but if you want a Regency fan to dnf your book get one of those wrong. And dress. We are a strange lot but the irrational rage I felt while the FMC called a COUNTESS “Your Grace”….well…iykyk. I have 20 years of fandom in this sub-genre and I can’t let the obsession go.

On a very slight issue the author is inconsistent with show vs tell. At times she does a great job of explaining through showing of a memory and others she rushes through the scene with a paragraph that could have been a conversation and brought the entire thing to life. I was left wanting so much MORE. From the characters, from the world, from the story. In the end I felt cheated of the potential.

Ita a clean romance which isn’t a complaint, I love a GOOD clean romance and she did that well. The burn was also a little inconsistent. The enemies being not quite right but growing to friends was lovely and then the realization of love was a bit choppy. Overall it’s a pacing issue.

Allllll of that being said it’s a good read. She is self published and it shows. She wrote five in a year AND IT SHOWS. A good editor could have absolutely propelled this to GREAT but I still liked it and will read the rest of the books. It’s a light, clean romp that as long as you brace yourself on the few flaws is a fine read. I am hopeful she fine tunes her writing as we go a long.

What an adorable read!! If you are a fan of Bridgerton and Magic then you definitely MUST add this to your TBR right now.

It was such an adorable story to read. There were parts that had me smiling like a fool and then others where I swear my heart stopped. Keelin Schafer has created a wonderful world with beautiful characters! I can’t wait to read the next book!!!

Pros: Lovely prose. Good MMC.

Cons: This book is more “regency inspired” than true regency romance. A lot of the societal rules, etiquettes, and practices were left out or just ignored. The FMC while lovable, is sooooo naïve. Painfully so. The plot was so obvious in its direction and yet the FMC just kept going along….

I didn’t enjoy reading about everyday humans with magic. There was no enchantment in this story. Of course magic was seen as evil, humans ruin everything.

Ok a cool concept, but everything was so undeveloped. Magic in the regency period? Cool! Ignoring the societal structure, rules, and limitations, so disappointing. The main character is naive to the point of being a complete idiot who is manipulated so easily, even in the face of obvious truths. Gah it was so frustrating 😤

This book was very well written and I loved the concept. However, the FMC was too naive and the crimes she committed were not easy for me to forgive. I loved the MMC and felt he deserved better. I absolutely will read more from this author in the future as I loved her writing style and the genre.

A regency. With Magic. Not whimsy. Not subtle enhanced powers. But real magic. Like Harry Potter, except if the Muggles were integrated with the magical society. YES PLEASE! I was so terribly excited to read this. It was fully a regency – balls, chaperones, etiquette and calling cards – but it was also fully a fantasy, with a magic agency, rules for apprenticeship and spell books.

Adeline, an isolated young woman comes to London to find a husband with her married cousin as a chaperone. She is quite a catch, heir to her family’s estate and with a powerful magical bloodline. With her strong credentials, she can afford to be choosy, and instantly strikes sparks with two cousins. The first is stern and intimidating, Theodore, the Viscount of Davenport and the leader of the Whig party in Parliament. His younger cousin, Charles, dashing and charming, is a teacher at the London Society Syndicate But Addy’s heart isn’t caught up with the swirl of London society – her thoughts remain with her dying father, and her wish that she could somehow save his life…. with magic.

Naïve Adeline learns of a potion that can save her father, but it requires her to take items from Teddy. Initially, she has no hesitation, and signs up to be his apprentice. However, sparks continue to fly, and their initial enmity turns into true friendship. Conflicts continue with her friendship with Teddy and her courtship with Charles but through it all, her love for her father is the biggest constant.

There were two elements I didn’t enjoy in this book and they both relate to magic. The first issue is how the magic system is structured (bloodlines), and the second is the, I feel, flawed assumption by the MMC and the driving force in his research. However, since I hate spoilers, I won’t say more here.

I greatly enjoyed this book and was excited to learn there’s another in the works. I can’t wait to read it.

Perfect mix of the classics, it reminded me of the feelings I had when I was young, reading a book and just getting lost in a new world!

This book made me believe in ✨magic✨ again. There are two books that I can recall, that changed my brain chemistry as a kid and taught me that you can live a million different lives through stories, and this is right up there next to them!

This book was a perfect mix of Pride & Prejudice vibes, with the love story between our two protagonists. And Harry Potter vibes, with the magical world this Author brought to life. This book had it all, Romance, Banter, and an incredible plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

We follow one of our two main protagonists, Adeline. She is a magically gifted heiress looking for a quick marriage and then a quick carriage back to be with her dying Father during his last days.

And Theodore “Teddy”. He is the Lord over a wealthy estate and the leader of a Magical Reform movement who only wants for the happiness of his family and for everyone to be equal and safe.

But not everyone wants the same, the rich don’t face consequences for their actions, and they will do anything to keep it that way, including getting rid of anyone standing in their way.

Their story is one that will stick with me for a very long time, and the little blurb at the end giving a little sneak peek into the next book has me wishing I could just hop right into that story, incredible work! 5 ✨’s.

Thank you to the Author Keelin Schafer, for writing this amazing story & for my ebook copy of “Enchantment’s Apprentice”.

I received this advance review copy at no personal cost and all opinions are given voluntarily.

What happens when you take the regency period and combine it with magic? An easy-to-read and fall in love with romance that you can't put down.
I loved the romance building within this book. The was the main characters bantered, and the way they fell into friendship and kindness was so wonderful.
This book really reminded me that romance doesn't have to burn bright and hot with open-door scenes to make you feel satisfied.
I loved that the MMC realized that the mistake that was made by the FMC also fell on him and how he was teaching. He was mature and incredibly well-rounded, despite being in danger. It was awesome seeing that he didn't react emotionally, but logically. The FMC was naive, but, due to her age and upbringing, it's what we expected. She didn't understand the magic she was asking for, and didn't understand that the sacrifice wasn't just what she believed on the surface.

I do wish there was more of an epilogue. I wanted to know what happened and wanted to see them be engaged and get married and fall more in love. But, maybe that will come in the next book with them being side characters? I sure hope so.

I enjoyed this! Who knew that “magical regency” would be a thing but I’m here for it.☺️ And I see you - all those pride and prejudice references!

“You have enchanted me, body and soul.”

The FMC was painfully dumb at times, but I endured with just a few eye rolls. Can I also complain that there was way too much winking? No man winks that much in real life (or at all??) I guess that’s a pet peeve of mine.

But overall - it was cute, it was fun, it was clean, and I enjoyed it! I didn’t realize it was part of series until I got to the end but look forward to reading more (it’s totally a standalone but continues with other characters in the next books).

A few other magical regency books I’ve enjoyed:

What a sweet, perfect blend of Regency romance and magical fantasy!! I’m always a sucker for a good love story and this one hit all the marks. It’s clean and filled with so many tender moments that absolutely pull on your heartstrings. There were times I laughed out loud at the clever quips between characters and times where I was literally holding my breath, wondering how on earth this was going to resolve and we were going to get our happy ending!! Loved loved loved this sweet romance! Excellent read.

My only regret is that I can’t read fast these days and couldn’t get all of this goodness and loveliness into my brain any sooner!!!

Oh my gosh! I was so thrilled to stumble upon such a unique and enchanting story! If you love Pride and Prejudice but want magic, then this NEEDS to be your next read. It was truly such a fun enjoyable book and I devoured it! The plots and intrigue of the London season reach a whole new level of intrigue when spells start to interfere and a life hangs in the balance. In this beautiful, heartwarming story I was grinning and laughing. It truly was a uniquely beautiful genre and I need more magical regency books in my life. A new favorite genre has officially been unlocked!

If you are a fan of Bridgerton/Regency Era books and magic systems like Harry Potter then you will LOVE this book! The beautiful entanglement of the simple magic system mixed with the politics and caste system of a regency book had me hooked from the very beginning! Not only that, but the underlying romance and gut-wrenching backstories has you deeply connected to the characters and rooting for them to get their Happily Ever After!

Without spoiling anything.... I did not expect that plot twist either!!

Highly highly recommend!

Soooo good. If you like romance regency as well as magical books this is the absolute PERFECT book to read. Me personally I really like reading fantasy books and I also love romance. I’ve never read a regency fantasy book before but ever since I read this I honestly don’t know why they don’t have more of these kinds of books😭 it literally mixed in all my favourite genres into one book! It was very well written, super fun to read and had the sweetest love story. Absolutely LOVED it!! Definitely recommend.

Enchantment’s Apprentice was a charming read! The writing was solid, the plot threads tied together neatly, and the slow build of tension toward the end paid off beautifully. The happily ever after was sweet and satisfying. If anything, the story leaned a bit simple—but honestly, that was part of its charm. It felt like a refreshing palate cleanser after some of the heavier fantasies I’ve read lately. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a light, cozy escape—think Bridgerton with a young adult fantasy twist.

Discovered this author through her reels, but I didn't realize the reel that left me intrigued was for the plot of book three. "Magical regency" isn't a genre I would naturally be drawn toward, and I'm sure my feelings related to this book reflect that. The world building wasn't enough to help me accept magical spells as a natural part of the Regency ton and I found the FMC to be fairly oblivious, although it was more fun than I expected. I can imagine this book would work better for others, particularly younger readers.

I really enjoyed this story; It felt a bit like pride and prejudice with political intrigue, mystery, twists and magic! Dual pov with a dual timeline allowed us to understand the main characters better while still progressing the story. Schafer gives us the perfect blend of enemies to lovers slow burn romance with forced proximity, age-gap, and regency era tropes and an HEA! Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Enchantments Apprentice was such a good book. I really liked how determined Adaline was to help save her father. The only solution has her being the Viscount Theodore Davenport's Apprentice who she dislikes after a runin at her debut ball, but things arnt that easy. These 2 start to fall for each other. And Chaos happens. I'm really wanting to get this book for my bookshelf now.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives Bridgerton with magic vibes. It's a light read with decent world building and both loveable and detestable characters. The two main characters go through growth and personal development. The story wraps up with a nice tidy ending while also leaving room for more books from this world. Will definitely read those too when they come.

It was the anticipation, the stolen moments, the “what if this is THE chapter?”
