The story and characters were a lot more interesting than the first book, but it still seemed a bit bland and the worldbuilding was sub-par.

The story was much better than the first book. Nothing really happened in the first book story-wise other than moving into a house but this book was centered around a quest. The story was somewhat unique with twists I didn't always see coming. The new characters introduced were fun and weren't too cliché.

Unfortunately, the worldbuilding hasn't really improved from the first book. The world doesn't really feel fleshed out or alive. There are a lot of elements reminiscent of litRPG novels, especially when it comes to the way magic works and how it is explained. These elements seem rather shallow and break immersion whenever they show up. I wish there was a least a little more focus on worldbuilding but Kraken Mage seems content with just being generic fantasy setting, which is a disappointing.

I listened to the audiobook and the narration was pretty good. Having three narrators really helped each character feel unique and different. Unfortunately, the male narrator was very quite at points which made it difficult to understand what they were saying with cranking the volume out.

If you enjoyed the first book, I would recommend reading this as well. If you didn't enjoy the first book, I wouldn't bother picking this one up. It is better, but not significantly.

Alaria is becoming a better person. Not only does she have her adventuring knowledge she is also helping others as needed. This novel is about helping people and also about believing in yourself and your close friends.
