Lola is a book lover with a *slight* romance obsession and a passion for love. Especially love between sassy women and huge, growly magical men ;)

When she's not reading or writing up a storm, she's hanging out with her husband and three kids, or baking something sugary that she *probably* shouldn't eat (but will).

This one was disappointing.

It was weirdly disjointed - instead of a single cohesive arc it had like 6 arcs that didn't connect or even flow well together.

It also had the dumbest wtf setup in the middle. Yeah, I'm talking about the "and then 6 months passed" part.

So here's the deal. Cara has just been kidnapped for the FOURTH time. Shot full of tranqs, wakes up in a cage, separated from her mate, etc. These fuckwits claim they are government, trying to help rabid wolves. Here's the thing: I don't give a flying fuck.

Cara decides to go along with all of it. Being prisoner - she can't leave the facility (she later mentions they allowed her to run in the yard as wolf... It is horrifying, fucking Stockholm Syndrome shit), Knox can't be there or know where she is, nor can anyone else. They don't give her a choice, no option to leave. They open the conversation by threatening her with a fucking shock collar! When she doesn't agree they shoot her full of tranqs! But she stays. Works with the wolves. Leaves Knox and her friends, her chosen pack and family, for six fucking months.

It was disgusting to me. She doesn't just agree she gets no life and will be a willing prisoner working for them until they decide she can leave, she doesn't even try to advocate for herself. I hated her. It ruined her character for me. This chick was in her worst situation yet - because the other fucking three times she was kidnapped, she at least had Knox - but suddenly has no spine. Willing to be used, like a goddamn pathetic doormat, agreeing that she deserves no agency and no life.

Gross. It was so fucking gross. Like, GG going along with your kidnapping dumbass. I'm sure it won't be the last time that people decide you get no life and no choices and put you in a cage to be used, especially since you apparently don't mind anymore.

I don't have words for how much this wrecked the character for me. And wrecked the others, who were okay with her doing this. Seriously, wtf is the matter with these people? Yes, she can help those wolves. But are we okay with doctors being abducted off the streets and forced into a cage to tend to some other prisoners? No. We aren't. Because it is fucking. Not. Okay. And it made her such a pathetic martyr character. And it also made her not deserve Knox. Like, "hey, I think I might love you. Can you just hold for 6 months and maybe I'll get back to you? I've got to hang out in this cage for half a year with my abductors. Kthx."

Fuck. That.

And that was the plot for like... 15% of the book, tops. Like I said, there were 5 other mini-plots strung together with this, to make up the book. Let's see, we had... Ashley claim attempt mini-arc. Rescue the rabid girl with Shadow mini-arc. Then the appearance of Mccoy Sr and his threatening smirks to terrorize her. Then kidnapping 3 (Mccoy Sr). Leading directly to kidnapping 4 as they off Mccoy Sr to escape...this being the one I ranted about above, that led to the 6 months as a willing prisoner isolated from the world. Then a comedy of bullshit errors as she and Knox tried to mate and people kept interrupting them and being assholes - including her shitty family who - after telling her in book 1 she should have just died in the fighting rings rather than live as a reject - suddenly showing up to say they were wrong and love her (this was shitty and disjointed to me too. Look, my family and I have some rip-roaring fights, but we have never, ever said to each other that we should just die already because our lives are so pathetic. That's not shit you just shrug and change your mind about...or forgive.) Then another rescue of a rabid female who turned out to not actually be rabid (yeah, idk either). Then...some obvious setup mini-arc for the next book with Ryker and Shadow, and Ryker basically needing therapy from Cara. And then... I don't even remember anymore, some random small arcs for the last like 25%.

Meh. Really a disappointing conclusion to their story. Not sure if I'll read any more in this series.

Super sweet, beautiful ending to the trilogy!

Granted book 1 was a little slow for me but book 2 and 3 definitely made up for it!

There is abuse triggers in book 1 but it was necessary for the storyline. This is quite a lovely and loving read.

Happy reading,

This conclusion was… not great.

It was like the author threw in a bunch of ideas, but then forgot to edit or develop any of them.

Cara meets Ulrich, who terrorizes her, then kidnaps and imprisons her. He threatens her and her pack (also burns down their house and attacks them), but it’s ok because his traumatized wife needs help. His wife’s wolf tells Cara that Ulrich hurts her, which totally tracks given the fact that Cara is his prisoner, so they kill him and run away.

Then they get kidnapped and imprisoned by the government. But it’s ok because 300 traumatized wolves need Cara’s help. So she agrees to stay for several months, separated from her friends and family. She uses this time as a prisoner for some self-therapy. Seems like a weird kind of therapy, but ok.

Eventually the government lets her go because she helped the 300 wolves, which they transfer over to the Refuge. So now 300 wolves are at the retreat. Some of them are traumatized and some of them are abusers, but whatever. No one cares. They go camp out on the front yard as homeless drifters and it’s all good.

Cara’s family pops in and out in random intervals. It adds nothing to the story and seems really jarring. Cara and Knox get interrupted 18 times while trying to have sex and solidify their bond.

Then randomly at the end, Ulrich has a redemption arc. Turns out he was just a victim. Nevermind that he terrorized and stalked Cara, imprisoned her, burned down the refuge, kidnapped a bunch of people, put a video of her being abused out on the internet, ran a fighting ring, and his wife’s wolf said he hurt her. Turns out he was a good guy after all because men can be victims too. Or something.

Wolf Whisperer is the final book in the Rejected Mate Refuge Trilogy.

Overall, this series fell a little flat for me. I found the first book in the series to be filled with triggers, then loved the second and the final book just felt very hectic.

Lola Glass writes incredible characters. I loved Cara and Knox but also Ryker, Shadow, Bulldozer etc. The relationships, both romantic and platonic, are always delightful and really the best part of this series.

Unfortunately, this book just felt very hectic and complicated for little reason. It was a quick read but felt disjointed and lacked a cohesive plot.

Ever write a really long review on goodreads, and accidentally navigate away and lose the whole thing? Le sigh… anyway. The TLDR version is that I love this series and these characters, but this book felt really forced. It forced a separation between Cara and Knox to allow her to “heal” on her own. Just why she would AGREE to a THIRD stint in captivity is beyond me. And how captivity is supposed to heal her from the psychological wounds from her prior captivity is ridiculous. It forced a false emotional reckoning when she would shower at night to think thoughts and feel feelings. And it forced an undeserved sense of regret when they visited Ulrich’s grave at the end. Maybe he was a victim once, but if Cara can understand that McCoy had to die for what he had done and for her own safety, can’t she understand the same for Ulrich? A man who ran illegal werewolf fighting rings because he enjoyed the violence because it “fed his wolf”? A man who attacked the refuge, burned a third of it, kidnapped and caged Savage, Bulldozer, Cara, and Knox? A man who thought fear was the best motivator? The whole thing was pretty contrived.

There were some great parts in terms of healing and the steps Cara and the rejected pack were taking to heal, and I thought that making sure Cara had her time to recover by herself was well written. I really enjoyed the romantic scenes between Cara and Knox. Knox was a wonderful character and just what Cara needed in a mate.

Unfortunately this book was very up and down and I felt pretty disconnected from it. The pacing/plot seemed a bit out of whack; the events all made sense individually but they would’ve made more of an impact as a whole ordered differently. At about 80% the story just kind of came to an end with another event for dramatic effect right at the end which I didn’t care for as to me, the story was over.

Like a few previous books by Lola that I’ve read, the events that happened, the message that the story was trying form and what the MC thought/said didn’t add up. Cara claims multiple times throughout the trilogy that treating someone who’s fragile like they’re breakable is the last thing they want, but she also says that is one thing she loves about Knox, that he treats her like she’s fragile.

The words fragile, broken and trauma felt overused and whilst the topics approached were dark and impactful, I don’t think they were well explored or understood in this trilogy and a lot of things rubbed me the wrong way.

*Slight spoiler*
The info from the dramatic last event that happened paired with the fact that Cara and Knox decided to kill the man that they did without all the facts ruined this book for me as it’s a perfect example of the victim being blamed and dealing with the consequences that an abuser has caused. It was insensitive.
The rest of the trilogy talked a lot about a victim not being to blame and part of the healing being that the abuse is not the victim’s fault, but again, that completely contradicted itself paired with the assumption that a man is the abuser.
As a reader, that annoys and disgusts me when it’s a topic so relevant and talked about and in this case, it’s made clear people still don’t understand it, will still double standard it.

I continued reading this series because of the potential, however, this final book just flopped.

Things I couldn’t stand:
- The hypocrisy of her family continues, as well as Cara’s willingness to forgive them. I’m sorry but you don’t go from “you’d be better off dead” back to liking the person. People change, but they sure as hell don’t that much.
- There was a betrayal plot twist that I thought might get steamy, and instead it was resolved in a handful of sentences. Just so anticlimactic.
- Cara’s gift makes no sense. It takes her MONTHS to handle her own trauma, and yet her gift shifts these wolves back to human and then she just wipes her hands clean of the responsibility. Also, they can just leave her the instant they’ve changed? None of that makes sense and oversimplifies trauma and struggle.
- This book wrapped up literally everything except for Shadow & Ryker. I looked and there’s another series, but why wrap up so much—even things not necessarily connected to Cara & Knox—and then just leave that? If I hadn’t looked and noticed there were other books, I’d be furious.
- The last 40-50% of the book was honestly just wrap up. There was no plot really, it was just filler for the most part.

What I did like:
- I like Cara and Knox together and his devotion to her. This was a good depiction of a strong “alpha” male without overly toxic traits and having to be dominant all the time. He showed his softness, as well as letting her take the lead in so many regards. He also didn’t hold her back, even if sometimes he grumbled about it.
- Wrapping up Dela’s story. Unusual, but also good.

If I didn’t like the way this author handled their love and the growth progression, I honestly probably would have made this a DNF. There just really wasn’t a whole lot of development and most things were resolved quickly. Made this entire book fairly anticlimactic.

First, this series could have been one book with three parts. That said. The writing wasn’t bad. The idea wasn’t bad. It took some time to come around to the idea of wolves and humans being separate yet the same. Hard to do think the first book almost justified DV. The relationship growth was sweet. I admit I got lost in reading (in a good way). However, the pace was off. Parts were too slow then way too fast. Things seemed haphazardly put together. Specifically near the end it seemed like a rush to make everything happily ever after when it would have been better to linger on Dela and her human.

***small spoiler***

The families was what really got me. If anything that’s the point where I’d say this was a bad book/series because none of it was believable. After your family kicks you that low, it’s very unbelievable to all of a sudden be buddy-buddy like nothing happened. Specially if the idea of rejected mates is that engrained into them. That all said, would I read again, no. Would I try other of the authors books, yes. There is potential, but the pace just needs to be fixed. If other books are like this, then it’s a big disappoint for this reader.

This is the third and last book in a trilogy that included cliffhangers at the end of the first and second books. If I had known there were cliffhangers, I would not have begun reading them. Most of the time, I do not continue any series with cliffhangers in the books. I read the third book out of curiosity: could the writer continue with her characters developing logically as time moved on? Would the plot maintain a steady – and consistent – pace? In this case, yes and no.

The book is well written, easy to read. The dialog is generally crisp and feels realistic. The passage of time is odd; a six month time span is not played out well. There is a lot going on in the initial few days, then time skitters by and boom: six months have passed. The trilogy’s resolution is a letdown. It would be a serious spoiler to go into why; suffice to say the resolution is a well-used trope that I’m a little tired of.

I rated this book (3.5 stars, rounded to 4) higher than the previous two primarily because it did not end on a cliffhanger; it was, after all, the end book. I was not completely satisfied with any of the books, although all were written in an interesting and attention holding style. And that is the best part of all the books: the writer’s style. The characters are inconsistent when reacting to all the bad, bad things happening to them. The plot was twisty and while I generally enjoy that, here – particularly in this third book – it became irritating. I found myself thinking, “oh yes, here we go again.”

Some of the secondary characters deserved more time. If we are given a trilogy, it needs to be bigger than the two characters reacting to one event after another. There was room to expand on several other characters – and it seemed as though this may have been in the works in the first two books. But this last book only tied up loose ends and did not give us enough relief via secondary characters like Emily (the baker) or even Ryker, who never developed beyond the helpful sidekick.

There are more grammatical/typographical errors in this book than in the first two, possibly because the writer was in a rush to finish. The book feels as if it were not edited as well, although by and large the proofreading was pretty good. For example: “…after your claimed killed him.” What does that even mean? Your claimed mate killed someone? Your claim (about something) killed someone? Who knows?

The writer writes well, but I have decided not to read any more of her books. I still do not trust her to write good stories that stand alone, without cliffhangers (which I abhor). This writer is good enough (truly!) not to ever need the cliffhanger device, but since she insists on using it, I am not going to continue with her.

Great ending to a great story

I am so terribly sad this story is over…. I am so attached to all these characters. I love how Cara healed herself without Knox even though it broke my heart! A couple surprises in there made this a great ending too rather than a basic ending. The government stuff was interesting and helped the pack grow so much which is what they wanted. Everyone deserves a chance to feel loved and this story made my heart happy!

But I’m hoping Lola can extend this story into more like what happens with Shadow & Ryker- why don’t we ever find out Shadow’s real name. Who is the spirit wolf and I wanted more from Bulldozer after he changed back to human, he was with Cara the longest! What about the other packs? Do they start to feel resentful/threatened that there is a whole entire pack with special powers because they were rejected versus the packs who weren’t rejected and don’t have any special gifts? Basically I just want more from Lola- I think her writing is amazing and I want more stories from her!

Done with this series

While this is a work of fiction, the responses of the mc and her love interest are often just unreasonable. She gets sucked into a wolf rehab job and instead of being the one to make the rules, she accepts without question a horrible and punishing work contract. This plot hole was just so stupid. She is the only person with the ability to restore rabid wolves to their humanity yet she just quietly accepts the crappiest work contract ever. This makes no sense. And her love interest isn't allowed to join her in the undisclosed work location, as if her employers had all the say over her life. She never once behaves professionally and instead does everything the abusive employer asks of her. So very, very stupid. Then the family that literally wished death upon her are welcomed back with open arms after just two or three minutes of social discomfort. Beyond any form of credibility. Just a stupid plot. Vapid.

***Possible Spoilers***

This book is the perfect ending to the series, although I would love to find out what happens in a few years to the characters. The Wolf Tamer, our fmc, still has a bunch of problems to deal with, her feral wolves have disappeared, she killed her mate, and her family wants her dead. While she deals with this she comes to find out that the man that she loves might not love her back and it worries her. More kidnappings put things on hold and she discovers more ferals than she ever thought possible that she needs to help. Can her life ever get better?

I would definitely recommend this book and series to all who live a strong fmc who learns to stand on her own after her life crumbles one to many times.

I love this series so much. Cara and Knox are my favorite couple. I loved their growth and how they healed. I really like all the side characters too. This has definitely been my favorite series so far, and I can't wait for Shadow's story.
Lola writes such great characters. They all have great depth and realness to them. Even the side characters feel important and not one-dimensional, and I really appreciate that about her books. I also really love the emphasis on healing and growth, and how being in a relationship doesn't magically fix your problems.
The plot in this one is really fast-paced and there are some interesting twists and secrets we learn. A lot of things tie together in this one, but there's still room for more, and I definitely want more!! I always highly recommend Lola's books, but I recommend this series the most!!!

2.5, maybe 3 stars

I liked that she needed to deal with her emotions independent from knox. However, it was boring to read about. I didn't feel like Cara's actions fit her history. She didn't like people touching her but for some reason she was reluctant to speak up about it and knox had to prompt her to tell a guy to back off? And all of these people just bust into their house uninvited and it's just what friends do? And the family that said "you'd be better off dead" goes crazy not knowing where she is when she just got back into town? And then she just forgives them for no reason? None of that fit with my expectations.

Also, why is the rabid wolf considered normal when they shift back to a human? That doesn't fix the underlying problem of why the wolf took over. It made her gift seem trivial if the rabid wolves could be "fixed" just by offering them a cinnamon roll.

This was actually a re-read for me. I love Lola Glass and have read her books off and on for a few years now. The thing I love about Lola’s writing and books is I know exactly what I’m getting but she still manages to make each story unique and write characters I root for within her genre of tropey romance. Don’t take that wrong, I love a well done tropey romance. This book was a lot less tropey than Lola’s usual, and had a lot heavier themes with a lot more on page description of trauma and recovery. But I thought it was very well handled and was true to life. I appreciated our characters didn’t just go through bad things and then move on without any issues or scars. They were still people and got things done that needed doing but they did them through the lens of what they’d been through and that made it feel all the more authentic.

***DOES NOT STAND ALONE; MAKE SURE YOU’VE READ THE FIRST TWO BEFORE THIS ONE***

***Trigger warnings: violence on the page

Finally the end! And a great ending it was. I enjoyed how the author wove many of the tracks she’d laid in the previous two books together. I enjoyed the secondary characters and their genuine relevance to the story. I enjoyed the depth of the chosen relationship between the male and female leads and their true devotion to each other in face of opposition and in the wake of tragedy.

The story is again female lead POV, with the epilogue male lead POV, very well written and well edited, and a great ending to the story.

This is a NON-SPOILER EVIEW of Wolf Whisperer, the third book in the Rejected Mate Refuge series by Lola Glass. This read was like coming full circle for Cara and Knox. The story picks up just where the second book leaves off and we discover why McCoy Sr. is stalking Cara. I loved the interaction between Ko and Ginger. The read is a steady paced, heart pounding read that is packed with action, drama, intrigue and sexy heat. Cara comes into her gift in this read and finally there is a decision made with Knox. While this reads as a wrap for the story from Cara's point of view, there are more reads coming in the series... Shadow's story is next. These reads need to be read in series order.

This honest and voluntary review was made possible by obtaining a copy through Booksprout.

Great ending to a trilogy

This was a cute ending to a trilogy. It was a lot of fluff and things were wrapped up cleanly and quickly..but it was a cute read. I want to know more about the other wolves and what the landscape and politics look like after but the main story was resolved quickly. The spice was like ..a 2 maybe. Some details but not a lot but we'll earned for the slow burn. I'm curious about any other stories she has about these wolves in another novel. I'd be curious to read more about the government and politics with other packs. It's hars to believe the government wouldn't want anything other than to financially back the outcast pack as she restores the wolves humanity

I really enjoyed this series!

I wrote a review about the first book. It was a tad lengthy whereas I praised Lola for her daring storytelling and complex storyline... And of course, it deleted when I tried to send. I will eventually go back an rewrite it, and express my admiration for Lola and this amazing series. Abuse is an extremely difficult topic to write about unless you've experienced it firsthand... And I sincerely hope that in this case Lola merely is an amazingly empathic researcher and gifted storyteller.

I couldn't put this series down and finished it in 3 days. I hope you enjoy it!

After so much build up, this was a disappointment.
I came to dispise Cari's character with each book it went forth. I know she was absolutely traumatized, but everything regarding her was like jumping from one distraction to another. Constantly disregarding everyone who actually helped her and even saved her life, to take one thoughtless stupid action after another.
Combination of all three books were a BIG FAT INJUSTICE for Knox.

He was the silent hero of the story.
He protected her, kept her alive, kept her sane, fed, safe, loved... while she over and over overlooked him just because she always had to be the center of the attention. 😐😐😐

Another enjoyable book, great story n characters and a bit of hot stuff.

The whole 6 month sabbatical with the 300 plus rejected wolves was flashed over too much. Too easy, too simple, too silly hence it lost a star.

The whole story seemed to lose its mojo n energy, so much so I'm not continuing with book 4

...and what with these bonus epilogue only if you sign up, how goddamn insulting to the readers, so we have to sign up for yet more junk emails to get the bonus epilogue. No thanks, this really pussed me off.

Read books 1 and 2 quickly

But 3 started weird. 2 ended on a cliffhanger, albeit one that wasn't in the middle of a story, but 3 picked up at stress level 10 with nothing to start on. I felt like I missed a whole two chapters prior to the book starting, and it started getting cheesy, and the plot became flat. I think I got through about 30% before I had to call it quits. The beginning books were great, but I can tell Lola just got anxious to complete the series without really taking the time to make it stand apart like she had with the first two.

Sweet Easy fun read

A very nice ending ( 'isn't as YES there are more with the Outcast Pack YEA!) Again Writing and storyline so Exciting & easy to read I inhaled this book! I love how things with Cara of showing how had heal that not just bam love of a guy makes all better as not usually true. So It was nice seeing the struggle of what would be real life like at times. Again Author think likes tears so have Tissues ready but is good book fully. Can not wait to begin Inhaling/ living vicariously the rest of the packs storys!

2.5-3

Overall I liked story. Enough that I finished all three books. What I didn't like, and almost tempted me to skim, was the guilt/attachment to the fated mate that rejected, sold her, and tortured her. It got really old reading how he would always be a part of her because they were fated in a wistful way that made me want to chuck my kindle. The second annoying thing was that it took until 87% of the 3rd book for Cara and Knox to finally complete the bond (sex). 87%. I'm getting irritated all over again thinking about it.

For me, this series was kinda meh.

This one wastes zero time throwing you into chaos. The refuge fire, the capture, and being forced to dig into an ex–fated mate’s past make for a tense, fast-moving story where nothing is as it seems.

The FMC’s wolf-taming ability continues to be both powerful and painfully complicated, and I loved watching her question whether her “gift” is actually a curse. The stakes stay high, the twists keep coming, and the emotional tension hits just as hard as the action.

Intense, addictive, and left me very ready for the next book.

The pacing of this book was unfortunately not the best. For such an amazing concept and fun characters I was happy how everything was tied up, but it did feel like 40% onwards was just chapter after chapter of small little things being tied up and other characters stories starting. This probably could have been a duollogy if split slightly better. But I totally recommend this series to everyone because despite the pacing issues at the end, i loved it. Book 1 especially might he my favourite read so far this year!

Final Wrap-up . . .

This is the conclusion to Cara and Knox’s story, incorporating the search for love and healing as essential to all. Cara has grown through her experiences which helped her deal with her trauma. Knox is the perfect mate for her and gives her the support she needs as they help others. Grab your copy and see how the author wraps up this trilogy and answers all the readers’ questions.

I love how well rounded and realistic this series is. It’s not just instant, it’s about trust. It’s not just about making hard choices but about the aftermath. This book takes on a whole new challenge that personally I find refreshing. I feel like it gives a glimpse of how those who carry out justice feel when innocent lives are lost in war. On exciting news some real feelings get explored in this book. Read this series though you won’t regret it.
