In this special edition of Mowat's collected writings about Newfoundland, he shares his passion for the Rock and for its history. Beginning with the Viking explorers, then settlers and proceeding through the days of the cod fishery, the seal hunt and the great ships' captains, The New Founde Land takes us all the way up to the present day. Not only is the history well covered, most parts of the island are described in the course of the book, and the humour of its inhabitants is given free rein.
Farley McGill Mowat was a conservationist and one of Canada's most widely-read authors.
Many of his most popular works have been memoirs of his childhood, his war service, and his work as a naturalist. His works have been translated into 52 languages and he has sold more than 14 million books.
Mowat studied biology at the University of Toronto. During a field trip to the Arctic, Mowat became outraged at the plight of the Ihalmiut, a Caribou Inuit band, which he attributed to misunderstanding by whites. His outrage led him to publish his first novel, People of the Deer (1952). This book made Mowat into a literary celebrity and was largely responsible for the shift in the Canadian government's Inuit policy: the government began shipping meat and dry goods to a people they previously denied existed.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship RV Farley Mowat was named in honour of him, and he frequently visited it to assist its mission.
Wonderful story-telling, but suffers for repetition (this is a collection of previous writings), and a lack of maps. Helpful if the reader has been to Newfoundland, I imagine even that much better if he/she has lived there.
This was disappointing. To be fair I've never read past chapter 2 of any Farley Mowat book. I've tried reading his books at different times ad in different moods but for some reason they rub me the wrong way. I think he'll be ok though. I did keep copies of them on my shelf just so I could prevent friends from making the same mistake and spending good money on them for a while. But they were the first to me thrown out when I decluttered a while ago
As always, Farley Mowat cannot be outdone in writing skill and passion for his subject matter. I learned so much about Newfoundland's terrain and surrounding sea, its history, its peoples, and its animals. I recommend this book to everyone!
