MEETING MY FATED MATE WAS MAGICAL.

Then he rejected me, threw me in the trunk of his car, and sold me into a backwater fighting club full of rabid werewolves.

My pack and family have no idea I'm in danger and my inner-wolf is still crying over the guy who rejected me, so I'm on my own.

At least I think so, until I realize I have the ability to tame rabid shifters.

But I have no idea how to use it--and accidentally end up with a dozen crazed wolves protecting me like I'm their favorite chew toy.

The only other sane trapped werewolf is a sexy, infuriating jerk who calls himself Knockout. He might be my ticket out of the fight club, but I don't know if I can trust him.

And even if I can, those dozen werewolves who think I'm theirs to protect?

They're not letting go.

I have to find a way out before I get too attached to the rabid wolves around me…

Especially Knockout.

Or the gift that's keeping me alive just might become my undoing.

A non profit group started a rescue program for rejected werewolf mates... But gave up and started donating the rescued wolfs to an underground fight club??? 🤔 That's like an animal shelter donating to dog fights LMFAO good going guys.😂 This non profit is actually run by the good guys but uhhh no. Just no.🤦‍♀️

Heroine is a punching bag with low self esteem.

Hero is supportive but needs to spell out his intentions in neon signs for the insecure heroine.

Sigh, if only they could have even simple, basic, communication we could save a lot of time. Things will drag out, and she'll probably get kidnapped another handful of times in the next book. This series is not for me

Wolf Tamer
By Lola Glass

I truly wish this had been a DNF. The story was not engaging to me at all. It wasn’t that believable. Actions that were despicable were treated as if they were okay. I intensely disliked Ginger, Knox, and her mate and their weak wolves. To top it off it ended on a cliffhanger with no clue in the description that it would. It truly shocks me so many people gave it 4 and 5 stars.

This book doesn’t even deserve 1 star, it is gross. The characters are idiots. All of them. The author repeatedly uses the word rabid when what she really means is feral. The “heroine” repeatedly gets abused in every way and then manages to escape by pure luck. She also repeatedly walks into completely stupid/dangerous situations knowing exactly what the outcome will be but is shocked that exactly what she feared would happen is happening. The wolves are weak and spineless and stupid. Who wants to read a werewolf book about weak wolves? Why do the human and wolf counterparts not agree on anything? THEY SHARE A SOUL! The wolf checking out human asses is just ridiculous. Every conversation between the human and her wolf was cringy and embarrassing. The cinnamon rolls were stupid. Who tames a “rabid” wolf with baked goods especially someone whose been gifted the “miracle” of taming “rabid” wolves from the moon goddess or whatever she’s called?

4.75 - Wolf Tamer is the 1st book in the Rejected Mate Refuge and my 10th book from Lola Glass (and now my favorite). I was so engrossed in the story and characters. I loved Cara's heart and compassion, her other half was frustrating at times. This was a quick read and ends on a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read book 2 Wolf Charmer.

3.5 Stars - Triggers (physical abuse)

World build:
Easy to follow and pretty similar to other rejected mate series.

Storyline:
Had a bit of a bite to it. Some triggers with physical abuse that were understandable due to the plot. At times I found this exciting, but at times I did find it a little meh. Enjoyed the idea of rejected mates receiving a special gift due to their heartbreak. This was a new take and it worked for me.

FMC:
Cara is not a strong FMC. She is a baker and fun loving with a huge heart. Glass makes this clear early on making it easier for me to enjoy Cara. No false expectations with this character. Her gift to rehab rejected wolves made the story very soft and sweet....know that up front if you are like me and got to me in the mood for that.

MC:
Knox aka Knockout is a still a bit of a mystery. He is very secretive and I am afraid a HUGE hurdle awaits Cara. With her being so soft hearted I kinda dread that.

Secondary characters:
There are many but none were really built in my opinion. I hope this is corrected in book 2.

Happy reading

*Review for the whole series*

Look. The 1-star reviews are accurate, and the 5-star reviews are accurate. But there's just *something* about Lola Glass's writing that I adore. I turned on the Assistive Reader on KU and I listened to all three of these books in one day - got a lot of knitting done! They are just so easy to read, and it helps that I actually find some of the humour to be humorous. We all know what it is like when the banter is dry and we are expected to be laughing, giggling and kicking our feet.

***CLIFFHANGER***
***Trigger warnings: violence, abuse, including domestic abuse, and abandonment on page

I really enjoy this author’s writing. But I LOATHE cliffhangers. And the blurb did not indicate that this story had a cliffhanger so I admit to being genuinely peeved when I reached the end and found that the story was not complete. Because “slow burn” does not mean serial - I’ve read many slow burn romances which are complete in one book. I admit that, if it had said it was a cliffhanger, I would have passed. Yes, I hate them that much.

Secondly, there are no trigger warnings in the blurb. But there is real violence, abuse, and abandonment on the page, not just inferred or historical but in the current timeline space. I personally don’t have issues with reading this but I know others do and I think warnings would have been good.

The story itself is great. I enjoy the author’s style. I find the premise of the story novel. I enjoyed the female lead, Cara, and her ongoing struggle to be aligned with her wolf. I enjoyed the male lead, Knox, and his brand of care for all. I enjoyed the secondary characters - many of the other wolves made me chuckle in their antics.

The story is female lead POV only, though the epilogue is male lead only. I prefer dual POV. The story is well written, the interplay is electric, and I was deeply engaged emotionally with the characters. Which is why I was infuriated when it ended unresolved. I suppose I’m waiting impatiently for the next one.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I'm pretty sure this is my favorite Lola book yet! I really like the way things are set up in this one. The world and how wolves work are a little different than her other books, but I liked the changes. I liked seeing the wolf and person as different and how they're basically two souls sharing one body. It adds a lot of interesting dynamics to the story. Cara is a great MC. I loved her and how she grew so much over the story. She's rejected by her mate, and her wolf wants to give up, but Cara refuses. She's a fighter and won't let this be her end. I liked the other wolves and how they all worked together to survive the fighting ring. I really like Knockout and can't wait to see how their story progresses. This one is probably the least romance-driven of Lola's books, but I didn't mind. There's a lot of buildup and setup and it's going to make any coming romance feel all the more authentic and real. I loved the found family aspect as always. Cara's little pack of the "rabid" wolves has my heart. I can't wait for more! There's a lot of interesting twists and engaging story to keep you hooked. I'm super excited for the rest of this series and can't wait to read more!!

I’ll be honest and say I’m not really into the rejected mate trope, and I think it’s really easy to write badly. That said, Glass crushed it. This is not only a unique plot (very tough for shifter PNR), but it’s character driven with strong main characters AND side characters.

I’m a little frustrated at how stupid the main character’s wolf is, but I think that’s part of the point.

Definitely recommend. But keep in mind, it’s a slow burn and ends on a major cliff hanger!

This book!
Wow. This author just keeps getting better for me. This is my favorite of hers by far and I’ve already followed her, joined her newsletter and FB groups!
Loved the dedication too!

Cara is a great heroine. I loved the interplay - both the friendship and conflict between her and her wolf. Cara is strong without being hard - and she’s so different than either of Glass’ previous heroines. She isn’t coming from a broken background or with toughness- she’s a baker from a happy family who believes in love.

Until about 2 pages into the book.

Wow, I liked this book a lot. Cara’s fated mate rejects her and sells her to an underground wolf fighting ring. The pacing was fast - I could’ve read another two hundred pages but that’s just cause I liked it so much, not a complaint. Glass is able to evoke emotions and paint a scene without super wordy prose. I definitely had a mental picture of the cages, the ring, etc. and the twists of the story surprised me twice! Although I suspected the final one.

I liked the world building. Obviously the cultural prejudice against the rejected mates is hard to take, but necessary to the story.

I was reading the kindle Vella story and I think that is in the same world? If so, I can so seeing mates being rejected - what with kidnapping etc. but the heroine in that story ... yeah I’m not sure now if they are connected. When I got this on KU I thought it was that book.

I’m so glad to read a rejected fated mate trope that is so well done.

Loved it! Need books two and three immediately!

OMG!!

I'll be honest I didn't know who this author was but when I got this boom free on my advent calendar and read the blurb I knew I had to read it! Boy was I right! This story is amazing, it has so many ups and downs a full on roller-coaster! Cara is such a strong woman even if she doesn't see it yet, Ginger is hurt & destroyed by the rejection but I know at some point they saw eye to eye! Knox is such a mystery but in a good way and I love their love/hate relationship but Im dying to see how it unfolds!

That Cliffy was horrible! How can you do that to me? Like I seriously need to know what happens next and Im excited to see how this story unfolds! Lola you absolutely hit this out of the park Im addicted!

Good, but

This is good but not great. Well, I should say that the premise IS great, and Knox is a great hero so far, but the heroine annoyed me with her weird jumps to conclusions. All of it negative. And, who, when you are in dire circumstances, dithers around about whether the guy finds you attractive? It was the fight pits, not Tinder. The ending was predictable, and I don't know if I want to continue or not. It has promise, but it is also aggravating.

This was a really fast read that was pretty decent. Fair warning, though - there's some pretty serious abuse in here.

I mostly enjoyed it, though I was surprised by that... I can't say why I did when normally some of the stuff going on in this book would make me nuts. It is probably because of the characters, and the arc of them finding their way out of a horrible situation and beginning to heal.

One thing worth mentioning, though: I've never read a shifter book where the people were this separate from their animals. Like, Cara and her wolf were fully separate entities who disagreed on a lot of stuff, and honestly didn't seem to get along much in this book. And also, Cara's wolf is an asshole. That's what made this particularly hard to process. She was a weak, pathetic, selfish wolf who forced some TERRIBLE choices on Cara by seizing control. It was even worse because once the consequences of her shitty actions were clear, the stupid wolf withdrew entirely and left Cara to deal with the horror. So that's why I say her wolf is a stupid, selfish asshole... and incredibly weak. That was another thing that was weird - I don't know that I've ever read a shifter book where the wolves aren't protective of their humans.

That wasn't bad (though the bad decisions pissed me off), just different. And honestly, it was kind of nice to read something different.

Also, I'd like to give the author a high-five on one thing. She said in her afterword notes that originally she'd planned to make Knox someone from Cara's past. I'm so glad she didn't. I feel like ... the journey of putting their pasts behind them, and finding a new family, the family of choice, that's just such a better arc.

Really excellent shifter story! Is it wholly original? Maybe not. Am I giving this 5 stars instead of 4 because I’ve read a whoooole lotta crap lately and this was a lovely shift? (Lol, get it?) Maybe. But I think I just really loved how messy and complicated and real the characters were to me. I loved that Cara could have suffered from Mary Sue-itis, but didn’t. She was cheerful and hopeful and unfailingly kind and had the magic touch with otherwise feral rabid wolves. But she was also tough when she needed to be, smart in trying to limit damage to herself while planning her escape(s), and wrenchingly broken, while strong enough to decide to pick up the pieces of her life. I ADORED her inner dialogue with her very silly wolf, and I appreciated that this book had a different take on the human/wolf balance. With Knox, I think we’ve only scratched the surface. If the rest of the series weren’t already published, I’d take issue with that abrupt cliffhangerish ending, but as it is I’ll just be moving on to the next novel, thankyouverymuch.

No 👎

Disclaimer: If you are looking for a romance story with some type of Love or even love making of any kind.. this book is not for you.

So we meet Cara who just met her fated mate, she called her family and everything. Then her fated mate kidnapped her and stuffed her in his trunk and then sold her to a shifter ring fight of some sort. I honestly didn't mind this, I feel that is a good story base, what I didn't like was how weak her wolf (Ginger). She actually secluded herself and didn't help her at all & the only time she came out was when she saw her fated mate again (even though all he does is hurt her). So once you are rejected the Goddess gives you powers and her powers are wolf tamer. I read this book and I honestly didn't feel like reading the other chapter. I was very disappointed since I love this author. But not this book. I left wanting more happiness for her. Also this is just her POV.

TW: Domestic violence, abuse and animal abuse.

I’m a huge fan of Lola’s strong female characters and Cara was no exception. I liked her tenacity and her strength and her passion for helping the other wolves.

I was intrigued by the idea of the human and the Wolf being individuals and not necessary a cohesive unit like they are in every other shifter book I’ve read. This created internal conflict which initially I thought was great but as the book progressed and this disconnect put both Cara bad her Wolf in some very abusive situations I began to feel a bit uncomfortable about the while plot of the book in a way. This is probably due to my previous life experiences though so perhaps that is a particular trigger for me.

I didn’t connect with this one as much as some of Lola’s other books but after that conclusion I am really interested in seeing where this series goes.

Not my cup of tea

I liked the premise, but I did not like the abuse. In the wolf world, there is always stress on mate bonds, and this story sticks firmly to it one-sided. I would think a rejection would affect both parties, but not here. Only the rejected side is obsessed and want to be with their mate or go crazy. The rejector gets off scot free. And of course, the pack treats the rejectee like crap.

I really enjoyed this book. My favorite part was the wolves. I liked that they had a completely separate identity outside of their human counterparts. I am excited to see where this series takes these characters.

This book could have been a 5-star book, but it earned its 3-star rating instead.

Cara Flynn is ecstatic about meeting her fated mate. Unfortunately, within minutes of having met him, she discovers he is a monster. Her wolf cannot get over it and fractures. Cara (minus her tragic wolf) meets Knox Redding, a strong and yet gentle wolf shifter who ultimately protects and helps settle her wolf.

There are some problems with the players: Cara’s wolf is too tragic a character and when it is time for her wolf to come to the fore as a heroine in her own right (unfortunately, not in this book), her potential for recovery is not believable. The hero, Knox, appears to be well-intentioned but causing fractured wolves even more pain – physically now as well as emotionally – is neither a good nor believable plot line.

The story, about a pack of rejected mates is fresh, fascinating, well-written, easy to read and immensely enjoyable…until its end which is nothing short of being ridiculously horrible – it’s a cliffhanger and no clue to this state was given in the book’s description. That is not playing fair – I would not have read the book(s) had I known there were cliffhangers…poorly written, at that.

Halfway through the book I knew I was going to read the next book because this writer’s style is good, enjoyable with so few errors (grammatical/typographical) that it is a real pleasure to just settle back and read. I loved the characters, flaws and all. The writer’s puppetry is discernible from time to time, but I still found myself liking Cara (while wanting to kick her wolf to the curb a few times: a wolf allowing her human to be beaten repeatedly because of a mate’s rejection seems too over-the-top since it goes on for the entire book) and Knox (I loved his wolf's sense of humor as much as his: and the writer portrayed them differently)…as well as the supporting characters. The wolfish characters were fractured, broken by their mates who refused them, their families, and their packs. I would have liked more details on how some of them recovered.

BUT…the most egregious wrong-doing in this book is the cliffhanger ending. This is a personal peeve of mine: a good writer has no need of the cliffhanger if she/he is writing well. A reader will want to read the next book in a trilogy or other series just because the books are a pleasure to read. The cliffhanger is like a broken contract between writer and reader. Generally, it is the mark of a bad writer or a greedy one (Buy.My.Books). I do not condone it and will not support it. We readers need to teach writers to stop such horrid behavior: truly, there is no excuse.

I am going to break my rule and read the next two books. I want to see if the writing stays as good as it is in this first book. I am doubtful because it is an unusual circumstance, regardless of the number of books in the series, for additional books to be non-repetitive and fresh as the first. We’ll see. Either way, I won’t be reading any more Lola Glass books beyond these three because I do not trust her. She fooled me once and it’s shame on her, but she won’t fool me again. No more cliffhangers!

3.0 stars, B-, 70%

Not bad but it’s standard Lola Glass in terms of writing and tone. Her story ideas are good but her execution always results in bare writing with some issues in clarity. Because of this I’ve mentally placed her in my ‘Fast Fiction’ category. This book, like her others, reads like a bedtime story but for adults. There is drama, there is romance, there is a dash of violence, but the bad guy gets caught/killed in the end. And if the story isn’t over the writing doesn’t place stress on the circumstances of the heroine so you know things will be resolved in the next book. Very clear cut to the point in terms of larger storyline but not always with the details.

My one head scratching ‘why?’ moment throughout this book was the reason the wolves were given to the fighting ring in the first place. If Knox was solely supplying them it made no sense. If they simply wanted to study a way to help them after capture it made better sense to have their own kennel situation they could control at the refuge. Instead they place them in the hands of abusers and low lives? The only way I could puzzle this making sense is if the fight ring had a number of wolves already they were trying to rescue and they needed an in. Otherwise, it’s unbelievable they would trust criminals to keep to their bargain if it would impact their profits. The reasoning for the situation they were in needed better explanation and background. As it is it reads like they just voluntarily walked themselves into a dangerous situation with no just reasoning.

Aside from this I had some issues with characters, but they were very vaguely written so I can’t delve in to them. Ginger’s behaviour particularly was frustrating. I understood the way she was behaving was due to upbringing and cultural ideas, but this was pushing the envelope in terms of believability. If wolves are about survival instinct she would have bounced back sooner. Moreover, I wish the rejectors were brought up more. Like aren’t they affected as well? How are they received in their communities? If there are so many rejected wolves there would be equal amount of rejectors, which means there is opportunity for relationships with other wolves if they’ve been rejected (either with a rejector or another rejected ie. Knox and Cara). Which further emphasizes how Ginger’s behaviour is over done. Wolves adapt, her adapting would be thinking of other scenarios to have a mate. This is another example of the details needing to be explained more and given more thought.

So besides the fact that this is a different story and some clarity issues there isn’t much to critique since the writing and structure is the same as the author’s other books. They’re very bare bones too the point. I am curious what a more fleshed out story would look like, but for now I’m satisfied with the “fast fiction” format.

*trigger warnings for phsyical assault, emotional abuse, and threatened sexual assault*

This is the first book from Lola Glass that I even hesistated to pick up and that is solely because I do not tend to enjoy rejected mate stories. But I should have had faith. Glass took a subgenre that typically focuses on bully romance and turned it on its head and wrote the beginning of a beautiful story of resiliance and recovery.

When Cara's fated mate chooses to reject her and then sadistically torture her and send her to unwillingly participate in a werewolf fighting ring, her inner wolf becomes so emotionally broken that she refuses to emerge. The relationship that Cara has to her wolf, Ginger, is fascinating and adds a whole layer of emotional depth to her inner struggle as the book progresses.

It is Ginger's retreat that allows Cara and the wolves around her to discover that she has been given a unique gift: The ability to tame or calm rabid wolves. Their mate rejection has hurt them so bad emotionally that they've retreated into their wolves, but Cara has the unique ability to coax them back to humanity. Her kindness even in the face of horror, her willingness to always choose hope, her determination to make those around her recognize that these wolves are not "evil" or violent by choice, but simply because of trauma, is what makes this character truly amazing. Cara is the epitome of good.

And everyone around her can see it. Even the damaged wolf who is trying to convince himself he only wants to help save her. Knox, also known as Knockout, who's inner wolf is Ko, is an amazing alpha wolf. Strong, but kind. Tough, and overprotective, and yet also smart and willing to LISTEN to Cara and always, always put her wishes first.

The ending of this book broke my heart, but it also felt good. It was emotionally tough, but it matched the characters' actions and personalities so, so well. Thank goodness I was able to pick up book two immediately!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wolf Tamer by Lola Glass is another fantastic addition to her paranormal romance lineup, and it fully delivered on everything I was hoping for. From the very beginning, the story pulls you in with strong character voices, emotional tension, and a world that feels familiar yet still exciting.
The heroine is a standout—capable, determined, and refreshingly self-aware. She doesn’t feel like a passive character swept along by events; instead, she actively shapes the story through her choices, strength, and growth. Watching her navigate the supernatural world while staying true to herself made her incredibly easy to root for.

The romance is where this book truly shines. The connection between the main characters builds in a way that feels earned, layered with trust, vulnerability, and undeniable chemistry. The wolf shifter love interest is protective and powerful, but what really makes him compelling is his emotional depth. Their bond is intense without being overwhelming, and the balance between tenderness and tension kept me invested the entire time.

Lola Glass also does a great job blending action, emotion, and quieter character moments. The pacing never drags, and there’s always something pushing the story forward—whether it’s relationship development, world-building, or higher-stakes conflict. The supernatural elements add excitement without overshadowing the heart of the story.

Overall, Wolf Tamer is a satisfying, engaging read that reinforces why Lola Glass is one of my favorite authors. If you enjoy paranormal romance with strong characters, emotional depth, and a compelling shifter dynamic, this book is absolutely worth picking up. I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to read more from this world.

TW: violence, emotional and physical abuse, animal abuse

Overall I appreciated the ideas behind this book, showing the dark and negative side to being a fated mate. It was refreshing as it was sad to see male and female wolves being rejected by their mates and going through that process to try and accept their life knowing their fated one didn’t want them.

I can admit that my rating of three stars is mainly due to the points down below overshadowing a lot of enjoyment of the book for me and I really can’t recount much else of the book because of these things; I received an ARC and there was also no trigger warnings attached hence why I’ve put those above.

I wasn’t prepared for a few scenes based off what Lola has said explicitly as an author about not writing abuse into a relationship, but as someone who’s suffered abuse I believe this story incorporated domestic violence scenes (in that there’s abuse, of power, emotional and physical in this sense and many other elements of an abusive relationship, in what’s suppose to be a safe place) which I don’t think was the authors intention but it’s very much written that way.

The way the wolves are portrayed as being rabid, caged by humans and a few scenes that happened to the FMC in her wolf form by a ‘human’ in a place of power were, in my eyes, animal abuse which was quite hard to read. I read dark books as a choice, but anything depicting animal abuse is a no from me as a personal preference as I know it will ruin a book for me.

I did have a chat to Lola about my concerns just to let her know it could be triggering to those who don’t expect it, or have witnessed/are effected by topics/scenes with animal abuse.

To be absolutely honest, I try to stay away from trilogies that follow the same couple. I hate cliffhangers and drawn out stories. But, this book was on my TRL because I fell in love with the way Lola Glass writes a story.

I was in a hurry, loading my kindle up with some books before a road trip, and I downloaded this one without paying attention. It was Lola Glass, so I couldn’t go wrong. And I didn’t. I devoured this book in less than 2 days and immediately downloaded the next one in the series. I was so hooked that I finished all three in 3 to 4 days.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a rejected mate story like this. And that was refreshing. While being rejected is something no one wants to endure, each rejected mate is given something by fate to make up for the pain they suffer. This series is all about understanding that just because it’s fated, doesn’t mean that it’s right. The characters still have the power to choose their destiny.

The Rejected Mate Series starts with the trilogy story of Cara & Knox. This is the book where they meet. There’s no spice in this. Just the rocky foundation of a budding friendship that’s being built on shaky trust. I really like action in my stories (think massive fight or disrupted kidnap attempt) and this one opens with action right at the beginning and just keeps going.

Like I inferred above, as soon as I finished with this book, I immediately downloaded the next one in the trilogy. I couldn’t wait to see where their story went next.

It was an ok. It started off 5 stars worthy, and because of the book concept I just couldn't like it that much.

Cara gets rejected by her mate, and sold to a fighting ring. There she meets Knox, who has his own secrets as to why he is there. However, he does try to protect her as much as he can. The rejected wolfs all have a special gift and it seems Cara's is that she can tame rejected wolfs. She talks to the wolfs and she convinces them to give back control to their human side. The wolfs are more primal so they are the ones that fight in the fighting rings. So this first of the story was awesome! Cara's personality was great, and I loved her humor and strength. However, the second half of the story where her wold took over was awful! I really hated how the wolf and human were different. Also, her wolf Ginger was extremely submissive to her mate and allowed him to abuse her because he is her mate. To me this part of the story goes away from the concept author drilled into the book from the beginning: that wolfs are primal and have wild nature. Also, the abuser forced Cara and Ginger to accept his rejection. Why is the bond still there then? As such it made no sense that Ginger would have a one track mind. She allowed her ex-mate to physically abuse her to the point of breaking her bones. All because he is her mate and "loves" her. Ginger was no wolf she was just plain dumb!!!
