Sustain Me: A Handbook of Natural Remedies - The 9 Foundational Pillars for Health” by Barbara O’Neill (2024), 343 pages.

SUSTAIN ME is actually an acronym. By applying all the basic rules below, you will bring healing to many health issues. Each chapter also includes other specific remedies for common illnesses and diseases discussed, such as herbal remedies and poultices to apply.

I really learned a lot from this book and will be applying several remedies to my daily routine.

Her index is just a little bit lacking. For example, she has listed “slippery elm”, which is known to help with digestive issues, as well as cayenne. But, the index doesn’t lead to back to the slippery elm section when you look under “digestion”…it only leads you to the cayenne remedy. So, you might want to just read the whole book or you might miss out on something. I found a few grammatical errors (that I corrected in my book) and also a huge page numbering mistake. Page 224 skips to page 289. So, there’s actually 279 pages, not 343 in this book. Lol

SUSTAIN ME principals:

S - (Sunshine) - 15 min on bare skin, focusing on particular organs, increases blood flow bringing it more oxygen, fuel and water. Cholesterol just under the skin is converted to Vitamin D, which every cell in our body desperately needs to function.

U - (Use of “pure” water) - drink a MINIMUM of 8 glasses of water a day between meals…not during meals(no water 30 minutes before a meal and no water 1-1/2 to 2 hours after a meal). Water during meals dilute your stomach acids making it inefficient to digest food properly. As the author goes through each organ in the chapters , she explains exactly how helpful water is to that organ and what happens when it doesn’t get enough “pure” water.

S - (Sleep) - This is when your body and its organs regenerate itself. As darkness approaches, your brain begins to produce melatonin, making you sleepy. Shoot for eight hours sleep. Most healing hours are between 9pm-2am. Turn off all blue lights: wifi should be turned off no later than 8pm and televisions too.

T - (Trust in divine power) - God has given us this one day, and tomorrow, he will give us another. Value each moment and be thankful that we have been given a body that actually can heal itself when given the right conditions. Trust in God. The author provides relatable Bible verses pertaining to health and what God has to say about it.

A - (Abstaining) - To heal just about every organ, it is suggested you abstain from consuming the usual top allergen foods: refined sugar, caffeine, wheat, and dairy.

I - (Inhale) - Always inhale and exhale through your nose. Your nose purifies, warms, humidifies and pressurizes the air. “This forces the air through a series of natural filters the body has which cleans the air and adds a gas called nitric oxide. This gas is produced in the sinuses and excreted continuously into the nasal airways when we breathe in, and helps to kill viruses and bacteria, as well as being a vasodilator, meaning it promotes the dilatation of blood vessels. The dilation of blood vessels is probably the most important job of nitric oxide as it improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to every organ, including, of course, the skin.” (p. 174) Sleep with a window cracked open for fresh air. We exhale about 2 cups water overnight as we sleep and breathe.

N - (Nutrition) - You know the drill. Eat high fiber, generous proteins and healthy fats. Fruits and vegetables, legumes and meats, and nuts and avocado. Eat the “naturalite” way. No preservatives, enriched foods.
———
M - (Moderation) - This would include even Stevia, fruits and whole grains. Moderation is key!

E - (Exercise) - The most powerful way to oxygenate the body. In each chapter, the author explains exactly how exercise helps that particular organ.

NOTES TO REMEMBER:

Rule of thumb for herbal teas: 1 tsp. dried or 4 tsp. fresh herbs per one cup hot water (p. 124)

Healthy kidney tonic juice: Parsley, celery, couch grass, & ginger.

One of my eyes looks like a bomb went off on my retina. I see little squiggles. The protective membrane is GONE. Could this mean my retina is trying to separate? Her recommendation besides the 9 “SUSTAIN ME” recommendation, is to make a tea with eyebright and goldenseal, let cool. Strain and refrigerate. The eyes can be washed with this tea two or three times a day. After the eyewash, a drop of castor oil can be wiped over the eyelids and lash. This is good for infected eyes, glaucoma and cataracts. It’s definitely worth a shot.

Castor oil - penetrates the skin deeper than any other oil and is very healing for so many ailments. It can break up unnatural formations and growths just by penetrating the skin.
It is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.

Comfrey - As soon as it is applied as a poultice, cell regeneration begins at a rapid rate. Would this work on a torn meniscus in the knee? I’ve seen a video where it did help for one guy. TO MAKE POULTICE: Pulverize smaller leaves, which are more potent than larger, with a mortar and pestle. Add a small amount of boiling water to the leaves to bring out the mucilage, then spread it onto a cloth, fold the edges over, and apply to the area. Cover with plastic wrap and secure with a bandage or skin tape. NOTE: This is so effective that people with prosthesis in the body (pins and plates, screws, or hip ball and joint replacements cannot use this comfrey. It is such an effective healer that it will try to expel anything that is not natural to the human body. (p. 318-19)

Raw garlic - cholesterol lowering (1-2 raw cloves per day can be safer alternative to conventional cholesterol-lowering meds), anti-fungal and antibiotic (1 raw clove of garlic 3 times a day with food for 1 week).

FLU BOMB RECIPE:
- Juice of one lemon
- Crushed garlic (1 or 2 cloves)
- 1/4 tsp. fresh crushed ginger (or ground ginger powder)
- 1/4 tsp. fresh crushed turmeric (or turmeric powder)
- 1 drop tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil
- 1 tsp., or more honey
- 1 tsp. ground cayenne pepper powder
Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over all in a cup and let steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain, if desired. NOTE: These ingredients when combined become stronger than if used alone. (p. 322)

Slippery Elm - A mucilage for digestive issues: 1 tsp. slippery elm to 1/2 c. of warm water before breakfast each morning. (p. 329)

My husband and I made the choice to live a lower tox life after 2020. Our goal would be to become non tox but it’s a journey and we are getting there - now 5 years in.

This book is great. Although I do not share the same thoughts on plant based diets (after having done so and it not working for my body) I do acknowledge as true many of the benefits she is citing about it. For me balance is key. 🔑. But I need meat 😂. We focus on quality making sure what we put into our bodies is the best we can source.

The human body has been designed to heal itself. We are in control of the environment we give it. Consistency is key.

Barbara O’Neill thank you for giving people back their power. We live in a world where so many people take a back seat in managing their health. You make it so clear that they’re the driver.
