Author’s Note Ten years ago, I embarked on a writing journey to tell the story I wish I could have read as a teen. A story that evokes the unparalleled rush of first love in all its dreamlike and naive complications, one that portrays a fiercely acerbic Russian American teenager, Mina Arkova, and her first-generation tough-as-nails mother. One that paints a very different portrait in its portrayal of Oliver Mondell’s life, a child abuse survivor who grew up in the foster care system and is moving to Los Angeles for a fresh start.
The Love and Other Sins series is a new beginning for me as a storyteller after spending many years telling other peoples’ stories through the craft of acting. Love and Other Sins is a contemporary young adult series about Mina Arkova, a good student with a nonexistent social life. Mina’s life is going according to plan until she is transferred into a public high school and gets held at knifepoint in an alley. Meanwhile, Oliver Mondell is ready to burn down his old life. Oliver wants to start from scratch—complete with a new name and emancipation papers. Oliver’s life is purgatory until he moves to Los Angeles and is on his way to becoming one of the most successful seventeen-year-old electronics hustlers in the country. Oliver and Mina develop a strong bond as the threads of their old lives begin to unravel, and they must reckon with a family history that violently refuses to remain in the past. Love and Other Sins follows the chaos that ensues when Mina and Oliver get caught between a brutal tug-of-war. Oliver and Mina’s distinctive identities are in jeopardy when the overpowering phenomenon—the tidal wave of first love—sweeps over them and triggers a compulsory shift toward codependency.
Love and Other Sins is a fictional novel inspired by extensive research, observations, and personal experiences. In crafting Mina and Oliver’s story, I rediscovered the madness ignited when the separate worlds of two vastly different young people collided for the first time. It was a stark reminder that although the yearning to be loved can distort previously unwavering principles, there is a deep-rooted significance in preserving one's unique identity.
*Can be read as a standalone, but probably best if read after Love and Other Sins*
Follow Mina, a senior high school student, and her boyfriend, Oliver, on a gripping journey. Mina was abducted from her home by henchmen due to her father's ties to an underground crime organization. She faces torment and an uncertain future. Meanwhile, Oliver tirelessly searches for any leads on Mina's location. The burning question is: Will Mina escape her captors, and will Oliver find her in time?
This was an entertaining read. I can easily see it being adapted for television. However, I believe the pacing and depth in certain areas could have been better. Despite these points, I found it to be a good read and I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment to see what unfolds for Mina and Oliver. For anyone considering picking up this novel, I highly recommend the audiobook version as the narrators did an exceptional job.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Emilia Ares, and SERA Press for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
So I read this book as part of a book tour. It was mentioned that it could be read as a standalone, but I had the time and interest in the series as a whole, so I did read both. With that said, both books are fantastic but very different. Book one was so tame compared to book 2. Book 2 was pretty dark for a young adult thriller. It's very heavy stuff but such a fantastic story. Can you read them as standalone? Sure. But I think to truly appreciate Mina and Oliver, you should read this series in order.
I have loved this series so far. It was quite an emotional rollercoaster, and I am completely invested. Also, book 2 is available on audible and was narrated beautifully by the author herself and Will Collyer. Sometimes, when an author narrates their own book, I don't care for it. However, Ares brought a lot of personality and life to Minas character.
Definitely recommend both the book and audiobook.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
"Love and Other Cages" is a generally compulsively-readable young adult novel, perfect for teens who want a thriller with a side of romance. I wasn't aware this was book two in a series until after I'd finished reading it, but it did perfectly well as a standalone novel. Mina, a responsible high school senior working toward her quickly approaching independent life, finds all her plans turned upside down when she is swept into the world of an underground crime mob.
This is a dual POV novel, alternating between Mina and Oliver, Mina's boyfriend. While this dual POV kept things interesting, I struggled a bit with some sagging pacing in the middle. After having been swept into the story quite quickly with peak action, I found myself bogged down in a repeated cycle of Mina agonizing over her tortured capture, followed by Oliver's panicked search for her. Both were legitimate parts of the story, I just felt like it was stuck on repeat before eventually kicking free and picking back up again. Coming in at over 15 hours on audio, this book definitely could have benefitted from some tighter writing. After plodding through that, there's an abrupt and unfulfilling end. Is there a sequel coming? Fans of series will certainly be cheering for that — otherwise, this is going to best find its home with those that like their endings open to interpretation. I'm not one of those people, so this one landed at 3.5 stars rounded down for me.
There is some spice in this book, along with some sexual assault — not anything overly graphic but enough that I would probably want my teen to be on the older side (16+) before reading it.
Here we are with Book 2 of The Love and other Sins series, this can be read as a standalone, as I haven't read the first one but did feel I was missing a little bit of the backstory
If you have a teenager who is interested in reading thrillers, this is perfect for 16+ age groups, and many will find this relatable through the characters and how they are depicted. Mina is such a strong character and well developed, authentic, and for being a teenager to go through so much has a strength of resilience. I hoped to see Mina and Oliver together more, but with Oliver trying to keep Mina safe and Mina trying to protect Oliver - well, you know how that goes...
I loved the authors writing style and how she brought the storyline to life with a dual POV between Mina and Oliver, it helps me to see what the other is thinking/going through but not only that Emilia Ares does a great job with her descriptive and engaging writing that pulled me into the characters world l found that I flew through the pages wanting to know what happens next!
I'm looking forward to book 3 as you just had to leave us on a cliffhanger
First, a thank you to Netgalley, Sera Press, and the author for providing an ALC for the book I have to say that the narrators were amazing and I was really immersed with Mira and Oliver
I have to be honest, when this came on my radar I thought it was a standalone. Starting it, I was confused at the beginning and had to do a search to know that it was the 2nd book. Add to that, it ends with a cliffhanger So it is advised to read in order I did read the ebook of book 1

Let me start with what I didn't like
1- the long chapters: It felt like once I started a chapter it would not end. 2- The overly details: There were a lot of them and descriptions and inner monologuing that sometimes I had to skim 3- The blurb of the book: was a bit misleading cause it is done as if Oliver and Mira would reconnect after they are separated. "Can Oliver and Mina rewrite destiny's script? Is the radiant beacon of their blossoming connection bright enough to guide them through a world steeped in uncertainty? Or will they forever wander as seekers of the elusive symphony of joy?
but 95% of the book, each was alone fighting their own way
Other than that, once I let go of the anticipation of romance, I was engrossed in reading about their struggle. The book addressed a serious issue: "the kidnapping and grooming of children and young adults"
Mira was taken by an organization associated with her father that breaks and trains minors as spies. Meanwhile, Oliver is trying to find her using his questionable connections.
Though I did enjoy this read, I do not think I was interested enough to continue the series.
PS: I was intrigued by the presence of an Arab character.

"Love and Other Cages" by Emilia Ares is an action thriller and a romance. I got invested, and it left me hanging. There must be another book coming. Apparently, this is book 2 on the "Love and Other Sins" series, but I wasn't aware it was when I requested this one. It does stand alone from the first one pretty well, but not as much from the next one, which is needed to resolve this story.
Mina gets taken into a Russian mob organization and used to pressure her father to do something they want. She is tortured. This was challenging for me to read. Later, she had to be a spy for them.
Her story alternates with her boyfriend, Oliver's point of view. Some of it gets slow. The ending was the most interesting and tolerable part.

Thank you to Netgalley, SERA Press, Independent Book Publishers Association, and Emilia Ares for providing this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
This book had a very interesting storyline. I've never read anything quite like it. The audiobook had great narration, with Will Collyer narrating as Oliver and Emilia Ares narrating as Mina. I think the pacing could have been improved a little, in the sense that some scenes were a bit drawn out, but overall, I think the plot was well-structured. I liked that we got to follow Mina and Oliver separately through a dual POV. The threats the protagonist faced felt tangible, making the tension and intrigue entirely credible. I will say, though, that I was a bit disappointed by the ending. For me, it fell flat and left me wanting more.
Characters : This book definitely has great main characters and side characters. I think the author did a good job of capturing the characters' feelings and accurately depicting anxiety.
That being said, I sometimes felt a little cringed out by some of the dialogues. In my opinion, some dialogues didn’t feel natural and came off as a little forced.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend.
What in the world just happened? This one was pretty twisty. There were a lot of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. Some parts felt a tad confusing or ominous but overall it was a pretty good tale. Nothing like leaving you hanging though! I’ll be on the lookout for the next one because it can end like this!
"Love and Other Cages" by Emilia Ares is a poignant and gripping young adult fiction book; sprinkled with the dark and often hidden world of human trafficking. The book masterfully intertwines themes of captivity and manipulation to demonstrate how easy it is to unwillingly become trapped in this world. I would like to think that the enduring bonds of love between Mina and Oliver save the day, but I cannot exactly say that without spoiling the end.
“Love and Other Cages” is the second book in the series by Emilia Ares. The first book is “Love and Other Sins”, I have not read but plan to. The book read fine as a stand-alone. I never felt lost or like I did not know what was going on.
In "Love and Other Cages," Emilia Ares skillfully weaves together the friendship of Mina, Oliver, and Nyah.
Mina is the resilient protagonist, whose strength and determination drive much of the plot; her journey from literal captivity is the novel's emotional core. Her sad new reality is a compelling exploration of survival against overwhelming odds, as she, through no fault of her own, becomes entwined in the disturbing world of human trafficking.
Despite the oppressive circumstances she faces, Mina's worst fear has come true, she must keep her mother alive. She is led to believe great harm will come to her if she does not comply. Thus, we have the beginning of all human trafficking at its finest, a way to bribe and exploit young people.
Oliver's character in "Love and Other Cages" is a testament to the complexity of human emotion and the transformative power of love. Initially, Oliver appears as a reserved and contemplative figure, grappling with his own past traumas and insecurities. This vulnerability makes him relatable and endearing character, allowing readers to empathize with his struggles. Maybe, even too empathetic for his own good, in fact leaving himself vulnerable to nefarious activities and operatives that are way out of his league including law enforcement authorities.
I worry about Oliver's emotional and financial well-being, because he seems to tell everyone exactly what he has and wears his emotions on his sleeve, thus opening himself for another kind of trafficking, money laundering and owing favors. But hopefully this will never happen.
Through Nyah, however young and innocent she might be, serves as the central coordinator. She may not realize it yet, but she may sometime in the future serve as a rescuer or be in service helping innocent people. She really has a talent for bringing people together.
Who Should or Should Not Read the Book?
Who Should Read It: • Young adults looking for a riveting and emotionally engaging story. • Readers interested in social issues, particularly human trafficking. • Those who appreciate character-driven narratives with strong emotions.
Who Should Not Read It: • Readers who may find the themes of human trafficking too distressing. Serious trigger warning to those sensitive to physical and emotional violence. • Those looking for a light-hearted or purely romantic read. This is not a book about Mina and Oliver living happily ever after. Maybe in the next book?
My Opinion
"Love and Other Cages" is a powerful and eye-opening novel that reveals the harsh realities of human trafficking. A subject that I have studied throughout the years. Emilia Ares does an exceptional job of blending the brutality of captivity with the human elements of love and resilience. I now understand how easy it is, to be abducted by human traffickers in plain sight, a sobering realization that underscores the importance of awareness and vigilance. The young love element adds a layer of emotional depth, making the characters' experiences even more poignant.
In conclusion, "Love and Other Cages" is a must-read for anyone seeking a thought-provoking and impactful story. Its portrayal of the unbreakable bonds of love amidst adversity will stay with you long after you turn the last page. The story leaves you hanging on the cliff, so I expect more books in the series. I am eagerly awaiting each book.
Thank you to Netgalley and SERA Press for providing me with a free e-reader copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own because as a United States citizen I have freedom of speech. I suspect the human traffickers would not appreciate these rights.
This took me a while to listen to but it was so good! I do think you need to read the first book to fully understand but I definitely want to listen to more of this. Mina and Oliver have such a bond and I loved hearing from both sides. I also really enjoyed towards the end of the book where they end in the same place. For being a young adult mystery thriller, this has some really dark themes and I think a teenager over 16 would really enjoy listening to this. Netgalley has given me a tough task of waiting for book 3 as this ends on a fantastic cliff hanger but thank you for the opportunity to read and review.
This is the second book in this series, Love and Other Sins being the first book. I haven't read the first book and this was fine as a standalone, although I think reading book one would have given me the full experience.
I am lucky enough to have an ebook, audiobook and physical copy of the book. The audiobook is well narrated by the author and Will Collyer, each narrating alternative chapters as the book switches between Mina and Olivers POV. It is a nice listen. I thought the narrators brought the characters to life.
The book jumps straight into the action with Mina trying to protect her mother. Soon Mina is abducted by some nefarious characters and Oliver wonders if he will ever see her again. The book switches between Oliver's relentless search for her and Mina's experience of captivity. I don't want to give too much away but the story was engaging.
The book gets very dark in areas and has lots of twists and turns throughout. It is full of emotion and I think seeing each characters journey helped me to connect to them more. It is well written. The pacing fluctuates between action and a slower pace of the characters trying to figure things out.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. With thanks to Love Books Tours, the author, Netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest opinion which I'm leaving voluntarily.
This book definitely shifted gears from the teen drama and conflicted emotions in book 1. Now it's evolved into infiltrating criminal gangs, surviving torture, working undercover and espionage. Mina has been kidnapped and is being forced to work as an asset with her mothers life hanging in the balance for her compliance. She's being trained as a spy and is tasked with a mission. Meanwhile Oliver has been trying to track down Mina, he hasn't given up hope and is working with shady characters to try and find answers. I liked the increase in action and suspense in this story, and the dual POV helps to connect the characters even though they spent most of the book apart on dangerous and different journeys. There are some dark themes touched on, and it's a high stakes YA thriller. I'd recommend reading Love and other sins first for the characters background and to understand their relationship.
Story gripped me from the very first page and kept my attention the whole way through. I enjoyed the plot, the characters, and I find the story very intriguing. This book was an incredible rollecoaster of emotions ! I have mixed feelings about what's going on and I can't wait to see what happens next. Definitely recommend reading it. This just broke my heart ⬇️⬇️⬇️ "I was flat on my belly when Mina dropped to her knees on the ground beside me. She turned to me and there was a moment—before Mina’s eyes widened and she looked at her tattoo, before the metal cuffs bit into skin, before CJ boomed into my ear that I was under arrest for wildlife trafficking before they hauled us off in separate vehicles—this impossibly peaceful moment, this tiny moment, an eclipse of a moment when the sun and the moon crossed and I knew that nothing could erase this link between Mina and me. We happened. “Always,” whispered the universe."
I saw this on Netgalley for free review and thought I'd give it a try. I had to DNF unfortunately. I gave it a good go getting about 60% into the story and I just couldn't go anymore. The characters aren't very interesting, and the story isn't very believable. It might have helped if I had read the first book, but from what I've heard, you can read as a standalone. Do not let my opinion sway you as you may like it, however the story just wasn't very thrilling enough to keep my attention.
I enjoyed this audiobook, the narration was extremely well done. After listening to it I realized it’s a series and I think I would have liked it more if I had read the first book.
I liked the two POV between the main characters and how their stories found eachother.
I found the middle to drag on, yet the ending was so abrupt. I’m assuming the author will write a book 3?
The label ‘young adult’ might attract younger teens to read this but due to the violence, sex trafficking references & sex scenes I’d recommend 16 yrs +
Thank you NetGalley & Emilia Ares for the eARC of the audiobook.
The narrator of 'Love and Other Cages' was great, and I just know that it's going to find its audience and they will LOVE it. The Russian-American point-of-view was engrossing, but unfortunately, this just wasn't for me. There was no 'spark'. I'm sure it will win over plenty of young people's hearts, just not mine.
This book was different to the type I normally go for. It was hard to get into at first, however I am glad I stuck by it. The characters were great. Olivier had an air of mystery about him which I enjoyed and Mina was the type of character that you just couldn't help cheer for. She was strong and persevered through tremendous difficulties and challenges throughout the story.
I loved the connection Mina and Olivier had.
The author did a fantastic job of entwining the characters love story with mystery, suspense and drama.
This book had a strong, engaging hook and started off with a quick pace and high stakes. The audiobook dual narration was great and brought life into the plot, so I flew through the book quickly. Unfortunately, as the story unfolded, what began as a promising thriller turned into a fairly basic mafia-spy plot without much tension.
The prose quality was decent. I think the audiobook did a lot of heavy lifting, because the narrators did a great job bringing life into the characters and smoothed out some clunky moments in the writing. They did their best to elevate the material, but for me, the story lacked depth and impact. I wish the book had delivered more intrigue and stronger character dynamics.
This was also marketed as a standalone, but I found out after reading it that it’s actually a sequel. The story made sense without reading the first book, but I felt disconnected from the characters, and I think jumping in at this point contributed to that.
Their romance felt bland to me. They spent most of the book apart and the dynamic of Mina pushing Oliver away to protect him while he chased after her to save her didn’t pull on my heartstrings.
I was put off by some of the content choices as well. This book includes graphic sex and violence, including a detailed sexual assault scene involving the main character. It felt gratuitous. I didn’t expect that from a book that’s published as and reads like Young Adult, even though it slapped the “New Adult” label on it. I don’t think the warning of “violence and dark themes” is sufficient.
I think readers who enjoy simple mafia and spy plots and don’t mind some meandering along the way will enjoy this more, especially if they connect with Mina and Oliver’s romance. I’d only recommend it to those who are comfortable with graphic content, and advise younger readers to be cautious.
Trigger/content warnings: explicit sex scenes, sexual assault (on page to MC), torture, physical and gun violence, kidnapping
Thank you to Netgalley and SERA Press for providing me with a copy of this audiobook for an honest review.
I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did!!! 6 starts this was an audio book and the narrator's voices were so enjoyable and easy to follow, also the storyline is just so gripping!! it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger which I cannot wait to see whats next. it will definitely be a book I will recommend ofter
Mina‘s mother has been brutally attacked in their own home. To ensure her mom’s safety moving forward, she agrees to hand herself over to the guys that did this and gather information. Oliver, her boyfriend, is left in the dark and would do anything to find her.
I had not appreciated that this was the second book in the series, but nonetheless it was really gripping. It reminded me a lot of the black widow and I enjoyed watching Mina work for her survival.
I think you can enjoy this book without having read the previous book, but I do think it would’ve added some needed context to fully enjoy the story.
This series is made for fans of mafia, survival, and he will do anything for her vibes.
The acting in this audiobook were really strong. I really liked both characters and enjoyed the dual POV. Will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

🇺🇸Love & Other Cages by Emilia Ares was simply too much for me to handle. From the beginning, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of the violence in this story, and the lack of romance, which I usually look for in books like this, left me feeling disconnected. It didn’t quite meet my expectations, particularly when I was anticipating a more balanced emotional experience with a romantic core.
Another important point that frustrated me was the fact that this is marketed as a standalone, but it absolutely doesn't feel like one. This is the second book in the Love & Other Sins series, and without having read the first, it’s incredibly difficult to connect with the characters or feel any real empathy for their backstories or their love story.
If you’re diving into this without the context of the first book, you might feel lost or disengaged, like I did.

Mina is a responsible high school senior working toward her quickly approaching independent life. She finds all her plans turned upside down when she is swept into the world of an underground crime mob.
*****
I went into this book expecting a standalone, only to realize later that it’s actually the second in a series. This made the beginning confusing, as I struggled to connect with the characters without prior context. The story alternates between Mina’s and her boyfriend Oliver’s perspectives, which kept things engaging, but the pacing lagged in the middle.
One major issue was the premise. It hinges on law enforcement allowing a minor to be kidnapped by a gang, which felt completely unrealistic. The book does hit its stride with solid action, but it soon falls into a repetitive cycle: Mina suffering through captivity while Oliver frantically searches for her. While these elements were logical to include, the way they were drawn out made the story feel stagnant at times.
Beyond the pacing issues, there were numerous plot holes and implausible scenarios that pulled me out of the story. The book was also much darker than I expected for YA, featuring detailed depictions of sexual assault and other heavy themes. At over 15 hours long, the book felt unnecessarily long for what it was. There were long stretches of descriptive writing and internal monologue that slowed things down overall and made parts of the audio drag, despite the narrators being fantastic. After all that buildup, the ending of the novel felt abrupt and unsatisfying, unless maybe the author is thinking of adding on another book?
Overall, while Love and Other Cages had moments of gripping tension, the pacing issues, unrealistic plot points, and excessive length made it a frustrating read.

Love and Other Cages by Emilia Ares
Emilia Ares' "Love and Other Cages" is a captivating and emotionally charged novel that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption. The story unfolds through dual perspectives, offering intimate insights into the lives of Mina and Oliver after Mina is captured by a Russian organization.
What Worked:
Dual POVs: The alternating narratives effectively deepen the reader's understanding of both characters. We witness their internal struggles, fears, and desires, creating a sense of intimacy and empathy.
Descriptive Language: Ares' prose is evocative and vivid, painting a rich tapestry of imagery that immerses the reader in the story's world. Particularly while we witness the horrors Mina endures following her capture.
Character Development: The author crafts compelling characters who are both flawed and endearing. Mina and Oliver are complex individuals burdened by their pasts, and their journeys of doing whatever is necessary for the ones they love, even if it puts their own lives in danger.
Audiobook Performance:
The audiobook is expertly narrated by Will Collier and Emilia Ares. Both narrators deliver strong performances, capturing the essence of their respective characters with nuanced voices and emotional depth. Emilie Ares' portrayal of Mina is particularly compelling, effectively conveying her strength, vulnerability, and the emotional toll of her past. Will Collier's rendition of Oliver is equally impressive, showcasing his brooding intensity and underlying sensitivity.
Area for Improvement:
Pacing: While the majority of the novel maintains a steady pace, the conclusion feels slightly rushed. The reunion between Mina and Oliver, though emotionally satisfying, could have benefited from further exploration of how Mina ended up in the same place as Oliver. It felt a little rushed to just say she was feeling a hazy and losing time and then carry on with the present situation at hand. I feel an additional chapter in Mina's POV would have been beneficial following the mission with Starling.
Despite these minor shortcomings, "Love and Other Cages" is an enjoyable and fast-paced read. Ares' skillful storytelling, combined with the exceptional narration, creates an immersive and emotionally resonant experience.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this audiobook for review
This is the second book in a series, and I didn't realize that until I was a couple of chapters into the book. While it is readable as a standalone, I feel that I probably would have better connected to the characters and their stories if I had read the previous book - also, there were plotlines/situations mentioned in passing that obviously happened in the first book.
I went into this book thinking that it was a dramatic YA love story and not much else, but I got something very different from what I was expecting. The main couple spent most of the book apart, going through their own trials. Olivier thought about and worried about Mina constantly, while Mina was mostly focused on her mom, and getting through the horrible situation she found herself in.
Emilia's writing and narration of this book were book wonderful. Her writing is emotive and beautifully descriptive without being too flowery (though sometimes it does veer into being a touch overly detailed which can distract from the scene); and her narration was emotional, hit the perfect narrative beats, and overall added a lot to the story.
I will say that this book is quite a bit darker than I expected, and the content warnings did not cover all the elements that could be potentially triggering to some. They include:
The read was fast paced and exciting, based around Mina, a high school senior, being chucked into the darkness of an underground criminal gang that has crept into her family, destroying what she once had. Mina's boyfriend Oliver, is willing to do anything to find Mina to escape the grasps of the Gang. The story is exciting, and full of spy style programmes, and Russian mobs. And that cliffhanger !!
Emilia's writing style is really smooth and easy to follow, with 2 POVs that builds a great and engaging story. This is the perfect thriller read! I wont go into too much detail as I fear I will give away spoilers, but this isn't my normal read, but I really enjoyed this book.
I wasn't aware that this was part of a series, and was book 2. Despite this, I think the book reads really well as a stand alone, though I did miss out on some context from not reading book 1. Such as the history of Mina family involvement in the gang, and what had Oliver done in the previous book?!
I was lucky enough to get a copy of Love and Other Cages as an audiobook through Netgalley for which I am really grateful.
I didn’t know this was the 2nd book in a series. Whoops but I believe it can be read as a standalone. I personally didn’t feel lost listening to this but I might go back to the first book to see if there’s any backstory/extra information I might be missing in this series. There isn't any backstory about Oliver and Mina’s relationship so it just starts off as two couples navigating their struggles.
Mina is strong, smart, and stubborn in my opinion. Mina is constantly trying to save Oliver from trouble and Oliver is trying to protect Mina. So, there’s a lot of issues between the characters and they are separated throughout the book often. Mina is forced to be trained as a spy and Oliver is trying to find Mina.
I think the writing was well written, I enjoyed the story and it was very interesting.
There were a lot of twists and if I am being honest be aware that it ends in a HUGE cliff hanger. SO, I AM DYING for the 3rd book now. I actually like the voices and accents that the narrator used for certain characters. It definitely helped me stay connected to the story.
4⭐️s. Coming October 15th! I didn’t realize it was the second book. I’d recommend reading Love and Other Sins first. Overall, I really enjoyed Mina’s story. She is incredibly strong despite being forced into a horrible situation. I like Oliver okay. Again, feel like the first book would help me understand him a bit better. LOVED the narration by the author. I knew I was loving Mina, and it makes sense with her creator narrating her parts. @thewillcollyer was excellent too. Can’t wait for the next book.
Mina and Oliver are on cloud nine. Until, Mina’s mother is almost killed and their past comes back to haunt them. Mina must make a very difficult decision to protect her mom. It will break her in a lot of ways, but her strength despite it shines through. Her sudden disappearance causes Oliver to search for two month trying to find her. What will happen when he does? Will they be able to save each other?

Did Not Finish.
Love and Other Cages is technically a standalone, but the story moves quickly at the beginning and I think you’d benefit from reading Love and Other Sins to get to know the characters better before diving into this one. And by “story moves quickly,” I mean there is a shoot out and attempted abduction in the first two chapters. ✨insert zero to sixty car ad✨. From there, the story just keeps flying by.
The romance is minimal, as the characters are separated for most of the story. But I couldn’t help but admire Oliver’s dedication and persistence in searching for Mina. He seems like a loyal friend and boyfriend and that’s such a lovable thing to be.
The content warnings list violence and dark themes, but I do really think that should have been clarified and expanded as there is on page SA and literal torture.
Overall, this was a whirlwind with a book with honestly a wild and crazy plot line that kept me turning the pages.
Mina is a high school senior whose father has ties to organized crime. She is abducted and finds herself in a world she never expected. Oliver is desperately trying to find her…will he find her, and if he does, what will happen to their relationship?
I really liked the dual POV in this story. Having both Mina and Oliver’s perspective really brought the story to life. Mina was so strong and she was not about to give up. She showed so much determination in a horrible situation.
Oliver really struggled with Mina’s absence - they clearly had a strong connection and he really felt that loss when she disappeared. These characters are young and don’t always make the perfect choices but I was really rooting for them.
There was a good amount of suspense in this story and it does deal with darker themes - specifically human trafficking. It does end on cliffhanger, so I am curious to see what happens in the next book!
While this can be read as a standalone (that is how I read it) I would recommend reading book one if you like more details/background information.
