Haunted Magic #1

Veiled Spirits

Rate this book
A mage in hiding. Five men she can’t have. A secret she’ll die to protect.

My name is Isabel Gallagher, and I have a secret. I can see ghosts. If anyone discovers my ability, everyone I care about will be killed.

To keep my secret, I have to pretend to be magicless. Since mages value power above all else, I’m the town of Hawthorne Grove’s favorite punching bag. I only have a year left here. Then, I can move away to a normal human town and forget that other mages exist.

My five year plan of staying alive and remaining undetected is on track. Until one night at the gym, I meet them.

A pushy alpha wolf, his easygoing younger brother, and their quiet, broody friend. Throw in my too-handsome-for-his-own-good best friend and my mysterious combat teacher, and I’m up to my eyeballs in men who make me wish things could be different.

But they can’t be.

While I’m trying to guard my heart against the men who feel like the missing parts of my soul, young mages all over New England are disappearing. When no one’s willing to investigate, I know I have to. But the truths I expose and the betrayals I uncover threaten everything I’ve spent the last fourteen years trying to protect.

Izzy’s character was all over the place. Dizzying. I feel like I’ve been spinning in a carnival ride.

nope

1 chapter barely devoted to the mystery, the Mc was very woe is me and crying constantly for reasons I couldn’t understand. The male characters outside of bishop had no personality and I didn’t care to learn who they were. The stupid school bully situation was also a weird addition because it didn’t add to the story in any meaningful way.

2.5. Pretty boring. Not much happens. She's very woe is me and everyone can do better. Can't tell most of the men apart. Start to make progress and then it ends.

MFMMM - instalove instalust, college academy age FMC, PNR

The FMC had some funny lines and some good snarky moments that gave me a little chuckle.

My issue was that the FMC has all these supposed problems that make her life really terrible and yet, I didn’t feel for her. When none of the conflict or story problems seem all that real, well, it’s not very compelling.

The bullying seemed contrived and like she could have improved her situation if she asked one person in her large protective support circle but she didn’t because of reasons. She’s from the most powerful family, loving influential parents, two supportive brothers, a best friend in love with her, and a teacher who has already tried to shield her from bullying. Not to mention, three wolf mates added at the onset of the story.

She couldn’t try telling even a single one of them and ask for help? Because it would make it worse? Or be a burden on them? Really? Instead, just accept SA as a likely outcome. It felt like a forced problem for drama. There’s self sacrificing and then there’s whatever this was- her reasoning seemed to occur to make the bullying plot device happen.

Then I’m supposed to feel bad that she has all these amazing mates and yet can’t accept them. I didn’t feel the angst or yearning bc there wasn’t any doubt or real reason keeping them apart. You knew the guys were instantly in love with her and not leaving. You know they’re going to end up together in every romance but it’s supposed to feel like there is something legitimately keeping them apart and you find out how this is overcome. I never doubted that her supposed terrible dangerous magic wasn’t actually a problem that was going to keep them apart. They’d just be together once the FMC stops objecting about how dangerous it is. Nothing happens really other than she changes her mind because she’s admits how much she wants them.

Then she has to endure a lot of pain because she’s a good person who helps traumatized ghosts move on. What she has to endure is horrific but I still didn’t feel it. I’m not sure why on this one as this is her one undeniable problem. I guess it felt the FMC did a lot of self sacrificing that seemed like it was used to justify the plot rather than what a character would reasonably do in those scenarios.

This one didn’t work for me. It felt like a FMC rejecting her mates trope that wasn’t quite executed.

DNF 15%. It has all the makings of a series I’ve been searching for, but wow is the writing bad. My brain has a pulse now and I feel it expelling the cells this killed with every throb like a rocket releasing excess fuel.

Beginning with cringe was certainly a choice.
Poor little secretly powerful girl getting tripped in the hallway, spilling her backpack, and called Latin slurs for lacking magic :(

Surprised they didn’t give her a wedgie and steal her lunch money, too.

Some authors recover from the cringe, but this one was committed.

It’s a childish, confusing, jumbled mess of tropes written in stilted sentences and dialogues.

There’s no real world building.
She fleetingly lists the creatures that exist and ends it with ‘and more.’
What do you mean?
We don’t know what the ‘more’ is!
That’s your job! It’s your world!

The whole mate thing is tossed around like reluctantly admitting to mutually enjoying pineapple on pizza, not the monumental connection it’s meant to be.

Mess! It’s a mess.

Nooooooo I didn't realize the next book isn't out until next year. Someone shoot me.......

First thoughts, this needs a new cover because I'm not sure it's getting the attention it deserves with it's current one.

Spoilers.

This is a super promising start to a series and to be honest the fact that none of her mates are assholes or reluctant to care about her is painfully refreshing. I'm sure someone betrayed her because she does get arrested and I'll be eating those words but this first book has been nice.

I will say that the only thing that annoyed me was all the crying and pushing everyone in her life away. Yes I understand why, I'm not being overly judgemental but she's been with bishop as a "friend" for 8 years. By now isn't the internal argument just old? It is almost old for me. If we get too far into this next book without much movement on it I probably won't continue.

Overall good plot, good characters and a promising start to a corrupt government and mates tale.

I've been "reading" this book since January... It's March

Dozens of books later finally got to the end. I think that says it all. Isabella is unlikable for 70% of the book then a cry baby for the rest. In my best efforts to cut down the number of DNFs this year, I kept coming back to this story. I wish I hadn't.

The writing style didn't work for me. I just couldn't find common ground with Isabel. But what really made me think, I can't even give this 3* just because I finished it, was her saying she wouldn't use her powers. Didn't that fly out the window when she was healing alone in the woods, making portals, helping her brothers business. Never once is it written that she's being careful. You can't tell me in ALL those public places no one would have noticed??

This just wasn't for me.

I actually liked it better than I thought I would. I don’t understand all the one and two star reviews. I don’t feel like this deserves that at all.
The writing wasn’t bad. I’m being honest. Yes, the FMC is very negative and a bit of a Debbie downer, but her situation is dire. I mean her life kind of sucks outside of her family and MMC’s. And I also understand her wanting to protect them from a horrible fate. But it did get a little tedious after a while to be honest. I would’ve liked to have seen more relationship progression. She has five amazing mates and there has only been two kisses in this book. I’ll never understand why authors of the RH genre write books with so little sex in it. And no, I’m not saying it has to be a smutfest, but if you have five hot mates, there should be more sex than just two kisses.
That being said, I did enjoy the story and I will be reading book 2.

This was too immature for me unfortunately. It’s was a bunch of telling the storyline instead of immersing the reader. Many scenes made no sense to me. For instance, when she lost slight control of her powers at the beginning and she needed to spar to gain control of them. What?! Then she still spars even though she got control of her powers awfully fast. Then later on in the book, she is able to use a little bit of her power.

There was no feelings behind anything. No chemistry between anyone. It was just a bunch of random thoughts pulled together and added on more and more. She is supposed to be a hard exterior but she cries at everything. Everyone randomly makes up nicknames but they have no background to them.

Also, I hate stories that try and keep the readers in the dark over every little thing. Every other page was things like ‘I can’t tell them my secret’ or ‘my powers are forbidden but everything is a secret and I can’t tell you why they’re forbidden because it’s a secret’. Too many secrets and not enough story line.

Overall, it felt like a story idea but no depth.

4.5/5 ⭐️

I need February 28th to get here as quick as possible! I need book two asap to find out what happens!!

This was a fun and great read. I loved the sassiness of Izzy, it made everything so much funnier and realistic. I also enjoyed that the author didn’t make her some feeble, tiny woman. In most books the woman is described as small and fragile, but for Izzy, she is taller than normal and super powerful. It was a small touch that made me like it even more. Izzy is a badass with a lot of dark shit she keeps bottled up, I’m glad her mates are helping her through it all.

Speaking of which, 5 mates?! Izzy is gonna have her hands full with so much testosterone around, but I know she can handled them. Each one of them brings something different to the story; bringing their own personalities, desires, and pasts.

Three things I am very interested to learn in the upcoming books are what the hell Levi is, what other mysterious powers Izzy has, and what in the world is going on with the council taking kids.

Overall, this was such a fun read. I am so excited for book two and what happens!

Side note: Luca driving a 70s charger?! Are you kidding?! My dream car is a 68 charger, this was such a fun surprise in this book. Made me so happy to read that.

Pros: Finally a FMC that doesn't have a family or mates that hate her!

Cons: The freaking stupid nicknames! I absolutely hate when an author uses a nickname in every single sentence. It's super annoying and isn't the way people talk to each other. Also, the FMC has extremely, ridiculously low self-esteem for no reason. It's excessive and doesn't make sense since she has such a loving family.

I couldn’t finish the book, it was just all over the place and every cliché you could put in there was there. Her power sounds so cool and that’s why I kept trying to read the book but it got to the point where I was just forcing myself. This book definitely needs to be revised and edited.

I want to start this out by saying I don’t review books lightly (see my page for confirmation), nor do I like to throw accusations around but I am honestly so dumbfounded by the flagrant use of AI in this “book” and truly have no idea how it has garnered hundreds of 4 star reviews.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good RH, PNR, university romance. I gobble ‘em up and can enjoy the book while also realizing it’s not meant to be a great piece of literature, just a good time. However, this “book” was neither and ultimately seems to be part of the fast-fashion-esque problem arising in publishing world today.

To begin, the characters are extremely formulaic, from the types of men typical of RH, to every single character being assigned nicknames with the intent of them being clever yet missing the mark entirely (I mean really, ‘quiet boy’? That’s best it could do?). The funny one of the group—if you can truly call him that—only has dad jokes and cheap sexual innuendos up his sleeve, as if it was typed in “make this one funny” and this is what Chat GPT spit out. This can also be said for the FMC, who is mighty and tough in school, up until someone talks to her then she breaks down in tears almost immediately. But other than that, she’s sarcastic at a 6th grade level. With that being one of her main personality traits as pointed out by the other MCs, it’s not nuanced enough to be believable that an actual adult wrote it. She is ultimately a child with the label of 21-year-old slapped on her and 5 mates that are really just fathers to her with how they treat her and how she acts. It is such an ick when authors follow those lines because it honestly feels like glorified p3doph1l1a (don’t even get me started with her *billion* year old mate. Like huh?????).

Next, there were quite a few times where the locations/scenes would change in the middle of a chapter within the span of a paragraph and the “author” would use a verb that made no sense in that context to describe the next actions. For example, the use of “wake up” here: “When I open another portal and step through it, my steps are dragging. I wake up when I see a massive bed in my room that definitely wasn’t there before. Izzy is spooned by Levi and facing Archer,” page 177.

Every now and then, it stops in the middle of a scene to describe the location in great detail, but seemingly for no reason, like it just pasted in there with no transition or mention of importance. I’m all for getting a feel for what’s happening, but it’s like it’s trying too hard and the “author” had to keep reminding the function to add those details in.
Example: “My mom gives me a wide grin before we follow Bishop along dark wood doors into a huge dining room. The dark wood continues onto the floor and through the trim in the elegant room. She nods toward Luca, Archer, and Cain standing on the other side of the massive table. Levi is standing near the wolves and gives my mom a charming smile. “Are these your other mates?”
I’m momentarily distracted by the absolutely massive white oak table that dominates the space. It’s big enough to sit around twenty-five people. With the light table and cream walls, the dining room feels airy. The bank of windows behind the wolves also helps brighten up the space. I shrug at my mom’s question. “I dunno. All wolves look the same to me. It’s especially hard to tell the two blond meatheads apart.” I can’t say the whole thing with a straight,” page 217.

^^ not to mention the complete personality shift in the FMC with that wannabe joke🙄

Another RH supernatural school trope is the FMC being subjected to bullying. Never mind the fact that it makes no sense that she gets bullied and won’t stand up for herself when she does MMA, nor the fact that her SA seems to only be an unnecessary plot point to make her suffer and adds nothing to the overall depth of her character, but that after this, the “author” back tracks again and says Bishop is no longer a student Hawthorne Grove when Danielle’s entire purpose of bullying Izzy is because she wants Bishop for herself when he doesn’t even go to the university?? This just seems like a plug in to Chat GPT to add school discourse and seems no thought has actually been put into it.

All in all, this was not for me nor do I think it should be for anyone else. I apologize if these review was harsh, but I feel protective of the book world we as readers and true authors cultivated for one another and cannot help but to point out the potential imposter among us.

Simple plot: the h (Izzy/Isabella)is a magical girl living in mage town (not the real name) but is suppressing her magic because it can go supernova without her permission. And her brand of magic is highly illegal. She’s routinely bullied (although I think she’s in her 20s???) because she’s seen as magickless. She slowly starts to meet her incredibly strong mates (Bishop, Levi, Archer, Kain, Luca) but feels the need to protect them too. No true villain in this story yet, but the mage council seems pretty evil.

Thoughts: the h has martyr disease and it gets incredibly tiring because only she understands the reason for all her 'sacrifices'. Unfortunately, instead of a bad ass, it creates a girl who’s a legend in her own mind: “If only they knew who I was…” bish who are you? “If only they knew what I could do” bish what can you do? “If only they knew what I was protecting them from” bish how about letting us know, please we beg... When will authors learn that they need to actually establish cred before they make their characters babble on about it?

A few other massive crimes in this book: First, the h keeps trying to protect the people around her with secret manipulations, but… um… she’s basically surrounded by superheroes, so it’s unclear why she thinks they can’t handle their business. Second, the h is a massive crier. It’s hard to say if I hate that, or if it’s a welcome reprieve from every. other. fictional. character. in. literary. history. Actually no, it's annoying. 50% less tears from Izzy would’ve been better. Third, the h keeps insisting (mentally) that she’s okay to die/give them a forgetting spell/let them go, but she forgot to give her body the memo. It dived wholeheartedly into life with her mates. They hang out in every scene. They touch all the time. They share secrets. Yet the h continues with weird dissonant inner monologue of “I have to keep them away from me.” Maybe don’t sleep in a puppy pile then????

I kept wondering if this is a problem the author has in her real life, ie. she does a lot of things that she doesn’t realize she’s doing? Or if her delusional h was some kind of strategic genius and there'll be a big reveal later. My money is on the former. Overall, a simplistic and kinda boring book. It ends on a cliff but I’m indifferent about continuing the series.

Hmmm

I would rate it 4.5 stars if I could. I found the lead up quite slow. The end didn’t really match to the climax either. What they found under the council building. Ppl and fae, men, woman and children dirty and broken and they couldn’t do anything. Then she gets arrested for being a spirit mage. Huh? I don’t understand. I could understand if they took her just because but being accused when she never used her spirit magic. Izzy has had a tough life, we are introduced with her being bullied constantly. The reader doesn’t know yet she’s more powerful than anyone knows, but hides it all. Hides behind sarcastic snipes, but cares so deeply for everyone. We get to know how she’s trying to protect everyone by never letting anyone know due to a scary dream where all her mates and family are killed because of her being a spirit mage (they are outlawed for some reason which is why Izzy’s dad is on the council, trying to change the law). Bishop has been her bestie before the book started and we don’t know he’s a mate until she meets the wolves. Lucas the alpha, Cain and Archer, brothers running a massive pack. Levi comes along later, her combat instructor and it’s finally revealed. No one knows what he is, but he is very powerful. I really liked Aggie, her ghost friend that would follow her around, and bring her broken spirits to heal before they could pass to the afterlife. I’m just glad her mates now know what she can do. I’m glad that Bishop realizes she never stopped healing even though she promised she would have 6 years before. They all need to be there for her. I think Levi will have to reveal what he is, and also figure out what she truly is, to save her life. I can’t wait for that explosive moment! Where everyone realizes she’s a million times more powerful than any other person or creature. Izzy deserves it. She’s done so much for everyone else, she needs a bit of happiness.

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one is a 5/5 on the trauma scale, so consider yourself warned (while the second book is out, you may need to check further books in the series if you prefer to wait!).

Izzy is a mage with a forbidden type of magic, one that allows her to see and talk to ghosts, and even heal them. It’s also a magic that will probably kill her one day…
That’s why she keeps her magic secret, suffering in silence as she is bullied by others for having no power, and dealing with the bigotry of the mages in her town and college.
Meanwhile, despite meeting her five magical mates, Izzy is determined to keep them at arms length so they don’t get hurt due to her magic.
It’s only when that magic alerts her to some terrible things happening, that everything goes to pot all at once.

This is an urban fantasy with a rather unique perspective. Izzy’s unusual magic isn’t one I’ve come across before, and I admit I’m looking forward to learning more about it in future books.
Despite being RH, this is a fairly tame volume in this world, because Izzy really doesn’t want to endanger the men she has come to care for. There’s her best friend Bishop; three wolves from the strongest pack in the area: Luca, Archer and Cain; and her mysterious combat teacher Levi.
They’re all powerful males, and it’s interesting to watch them, and Izzy’s family, rally around her to help, even as she tries to keep them away. In fact one of the things I loved most about this book, was the fact that Izzy’s parents and brothers all loved her, supported her, and worked hard in their own ways to keep her safe.

This is an enjoyable tale, even though I already hate the “big bad” with a passion, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it all leads. Hopefully to a happy ending, and a sooner rather than later one!

Recommended for UF/RH lovers, especially those who enjoy their stories a little darker, and their heroines a little crazy.

Veiled Spirits has an intriguing premise with plenty of potential, but something about it just didn’t fully click for me. I understand why Izzy is considered dangerous and the stakes surrounding her powers, but certain aspects of the story felt underdeveloped or just not explained thoroughly enough. I usually devour books like this, but I found myself getting more frustrated the further I read—especially with how many secrets Izzy keeps. It’s hard to root for her when no one around her knows enough to help if things go sideways.

And Levi... I need answers! The cryptic bits of information about him got old fast. There are just so many unanswered questions, but I wasn’t invested enough to be excited for the reveals. That said, I’m still planning to give the next book a shot—fingers crossed it picks up.

On the positive side, Izzy is a strong FMC whose world sees her as useless, which makes her hidden power all the more satisfying. I loved the concept of her being a spirit mage hiding her abilities to avoid execution. The fated mates trope is packed with sexual tension (though it’s a slow burn that hasn’t quite caught fire yet). Her relationships with her mates—especially the twist of being connected to the alpha wolf brothers and her professor—added some fun drama. I just wish the character development had been deeper; Izzy’s insecurities are understandable, but I’m hoping for more growth in future installments.

If you’re into dark PNR with RH dynamics, slow burns, and magical intrigue, you might really enjoy this one. Personally, I’m holding out hope that the next book delivers more answers and character development.

The story started out interesting, the storytelling was mainly smooth, the lead characters were all likable and the lead female's pain was understandable and heartrending. And I really appreciated how the female lead turned the infantalizing nicknames around on the men.

But circumstances that didn't make sense kept piling up*, the female lead's martyrdom (and low self-esteem) was ramped up to ridiculous levels without adding anything to the story and whole thing became stagnant and boring. (Oh, and unless she was deformed, she would not have tiny hands and small arms at her height.)

There was no plot, no relationship-building (unless you count her crying all over her mates ad nauseam without sharing with them why she is crying), no smut and it ended without any of the mysteries introduced being solved and, to add insult to injury, on a cliffhanger.

Do not recommend.

Zero Stars if I Could

Goodreads really needs to implement a DNF (Did Not Finish) button - or better yet, a zero-star rating option - because Veiled Spirits by E.L. Finley deserves both.

I gave this book two chances. When I couldn’t get through the ebook, I turned to the audiobook, hoping that the narrators might salvage the experience. Troy Duran, usually a reliable talent with a near-perfect track record of elevating bad material, couldn't save this one. Even he sounded like he was struggling to bring life to this disaster of a story.

Ash Kinsley’s narration didn’t help either. In fact, it made things worse. The inconsistent accents were grating, and I found myself cringing more often than not. If you're going to voice a male main character (MMC), please take some notes from the Queens that are anime voice actors - they know how to do it right. Unfortunately, I’ll be avoiding any future audiobooks featuring this narrator.

As for the story itself? A complete mess. Reverse harem stories with a large cast can be done well, but this wasn’t one of them. The FMC (female main character) was supposedly "badass" - yet she spent more time crying and flip-flopping on her feelings than doing anything remotely empowering. One moment she’s pushing her mates away, the next she’s snuggling in their shirts. Pick a lane.

The MMCs were introduced poorly, the plot was chaotic, and the writing felt underdeveloped. Nothing landed. The only thing this book delivered consistently was disappointment.

Hard pass.

so so

The premise is good but the execution is fairly bland. The FMC cries about everything from about chapter 5 until the end, which totally doesn’t fit with her introduction at all.

The guys are all underdeveloped and I honestly have no clue what any of them look like aside from being tall.

The SA or potential SA was entirely glossed over and added nothing to the story except to make her appear weak. Everything about her seems weak except for when she’s doing MMA (never to protect herself) or using her powers (again never to protect herself). The explanation of why she can’t protect herself is a cop out, especially considering she just freezes and her powers don’t even try to help her like it supposedly does every other time.

We learn next to nothing about any of the characters or the “big mystery” even by the end. There is no big climactic scene anywhere in this book and because of the blasé attitude toward death for 95% of the book, it’s hard to connect with her emotional outbursts in relation to the “discovery” and her memories. By this point, she’s cried about absolutely everything and it stopped me from being able to connect with the story on an emotional level because it was so overblown.

It ends on a cliffhanger but I have no desire to continue this series. I’m only interested to see if my guess about Levi is correct but I think I’ll just read some reviews to find out.

🌶️

I must admit that I am not a reverse harem (RH) reader.. While the RH aspect is not my thing, the story plot itself became very intriguing, and I’m curious to see how it plays out.

Isabel Gallagher is a spirit mage that can see ghosts, which is an ability that can get her killed by the mage council. To keep her safe, Isabel, her family, mates, and a quirky ghost must keep her unique abilities a secret by pretending she is magicless.

Isabel has one year left in mage college and is trying to get through without anyone else discovering her abilities. However, that doesn’t go as planned when her mage mate of 7 years accidentally introduces her to three wolves that are also her mates. Oh and let’s not forget the 5th mate who is a mysteriously powerful character… and her professor.

From there, the plot begins to pick up speed with great twists, suspense, tragedy, and the unifying support of the people who love Isabel. While RH is not my typical read, I am looking forward to continuing Isabel’s story. If you are into RH, magic, intrigue, and fun characters, this read is absolutely for you!

❤️Bishop is my favorite. Happy reading!❤️

Veiled Spirits is an addictive start to a reverse harem, fated mates, paranormal romance.
Izzy, our FMC, is young and a little immature, but she makes up for it with her sass, humor, and fierce loyalty. She’s protective to a fault, even when her determination to save everyone puts them in even greater danger. Watching her navigate that mix of naivety and bravery makes her such a fun and relatable heroine.
Then we have the men, three protective and affectionate wolf shifters (Luca, Archer, and Cain), Bishop (Izzy’s ride-or-die best friend since childhood), and Levi, the broody professor who stole more of my heart than I expected. Their dynamics with Izzy are a perfect mix of tender, teasing, and sizzling, and I can already see the foundations of an unforgettable mate bond forming.
This book sets up the series beautifully. The pacing is quick, the banter is sharp, and the chemistry is off the charts. I can’t wait to watch Izzy grow into her strength and to see these relationships deepen as the danger escalates.

And that cliffhanger?! Brutal. I need book two ASAP.

This was an enjoyable and easy read, and a solid start to a trilogy. There’s a lot going on—hidden and forbidden powers, fated mates from different species and realms, a feisty FMC who will do anything to protect those she cares about, funny banter, and underlying conflicts that add depth to the story.

I liked how each character was introduced and appreciated that there’s no spice at this stage, as the FMC isn’t ready or willing. She might cry a bit too often for some readers, but given her situation, I found it understandable. I would have liked more introspection, especially from the MMCs—since there are five of them, and only one was already close to the FMC—but hopefully, the next book will explore them more.

The pacing is fast but not rushed, and I appreciated that the author kept track of timing so we always know how much time has passed between events.

Overall, this book lays a strong foundation for what could develop into a compelling series.

This book was a little jarring as it started. It didn't do a great job explaining what was going on, but I didn't care. The FMC in this book is hilarious. I had so many laugh out loud moments because of her. She is a type of mage that is outlawed so she has to act like she has no magic. Throughout this book she finds her mates. She rejects them all to keep them safe, but they can't take no for an answer. They want to help her and keep her safe. They learn that mages are being taken and killed, their powers being drained. So they try to figure out the mystery. This is an unfinished series as of right now. Book 2 is just as funny and really great. As we continue to learn about the mystery we learn there is more to the FMC than just her mage powers. Book 2 will leave you in tears at the end and both books end on a cliffhanger. There are a few trigger warnings, but its a great story so far!

It was definitely a good book and I can't wait to finish the series. It drew me in from the very beginning. I stayed up way to late trying to finish the book because I just couldn't wait to see what was next. I love the relationship development between the MFC and the MMCs. Some authors struggle to balance multiple relationship development, however this author was very good at letting each relationship develop at its own pace. I like that there was no jealousy, but that there was already an established relationship at the very beginning of the book. I was drawn into the FMC's struggle between the desire to keep her loved ones safe, but also being drawn into the individual relationships that she is building with her soul mates who love and support her unconditionally. Overall, I am very excited to see what comes next, but I am scared to start the second book until the third book comes out since I read that it ends on a terrible cliff hanger.

I was really hoping each chapter would be better than the last; they were not. I am so glad other people were able to really like this book, but it was not it for me at all. I could not stand the FMC! It got to a point where I completely skipped her chapters. So whiny. One second, she can't stand her soul, and there is nothing left to save, and no one should love her, the next she kills like 5 people without remorse. I am all for a stabby FMC, please, but stick with that role instead of going back and forth with her feeling guilty alllll the time over something that happened years ago.
The guys were also not very memorable. Honestly, the one who has true potential, Levi, has the least amount of time with the FMC and is kind of pushed into the background. Then we have archer who the author was trying to write as the golden retriever type MMC, but failed miserably. Way to forced. Putting in dad jokes forced. I finished the book and can say I am not reading the next. peace.

Pretending to be magic less to save everyone

Izzy is very powerful however, very few people know it. As far as the school and town know she has no magic. Should the truth come out she could be put to death.

Her best friend knows her secret and also is one of her fated mates. She refuses to mate with him for fear of what could happen to him should she be found out.

Through a chance meeting with the owners of the gym she spare at she discovered she was also mated to the Alpha of the most fierce wolf pack oh and also his brothers.

The final mate turned out to be a teacher and I still need to know more about him.

When it is discovered that the council is up to something nefarious will Izzy and her mates e able to find out what it is?

This book is so full of sexual tension. It's a slow burn that hasn't ignited yet. I really need to know what happens next.

This book has a super strong FMC who the world thinks is useless. I can't wait to see what else she can do and how her and the men will come together.

Veiled Spirits

Excellent, well written and grammatically correct. PNR, Rh, fated mates, shifters, magic. Our wonderful heroine is hiding her illegal magic by pretending she has no powers. Her loving family and friend protect her, but she is tormented and bullied by her classmates. This book describes this school year as she discovers four additional mates. Her magic allows her to see ghosts and help them move on after she heals their souls. The process is very draining and requires her to relive the deaths. The governing council is corrupt and she fears her family and mates will be executed if they are aware of her magic. The heroine isn't afraid to cry and exhibits a lot of emotions as she finally reveals her magic to her mates and can be helped in her struggles. Looking forward to the next installment.
