I want to start this out by saying I don’t review books lightly (see my page for confirmation), nor do I like to throw accusations around but I am honestly so dumbfounded by the flagrant use of AI in this “book” and truly have no idea how it has garnered hundreds of 4 star reviews.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good RH, PNR, university romance. I gobble ‘em up and can enjoy the book while also realizing it’s not meant to be a great piece of literature, just a good time. However, this “book” was neither and ultimately seems to be part of the fast-fashion-esque problem arising in publishing world today.
To begin, the characters are extremely formulaic, from the types of men typical of RH, to every single character being assigned nicknames with the intent of them being clever yet missing the mark entirely (I mean really, ‘quiet boy’? That’s best it could do?). The funny one of the group—if you can truly call him that—only has dad jokes and cheap sexual innuendos up his sleeve, as if it was typed in “make this one funny” and this is what Chat GPT spit out. This can also be said for the FMC, who is mighty and tough in school, up until someone talks to her then she breaks down in tears almost immediately. But other than that, she’s sarcastic at a 6th grade level. With that being one of her main personality traits as pointed out by the other MCs, it’s not nuanced enough to be believable that an actual adult wrote it. She is ultimately a child with the label of 21-year-old slapped on her and 5 mates that are really just fathers to her with how they treat her and how she acts. It is such an ick when authors follow those lines because it honestly feels like glorified p3doph1l1a (don’t even get me started with her *billion* year old mate. Like huh?????).
Next, there were quite a few times where the locations/scenes would change in the middle of a chapter within the span of a paragraph and the “author” would use a verb that made no sense in that context to describe the next actions. For example, the use of “wake up” here: “When I open another portal and step through it, my steps are dragging. I wake up when I see a massive bed in my room that definitely wasn’t there before. Izzy is spooned by Levi and facing Archer,” page 177.
Every now and then, it stops in the middle of a scene to describe the location in great detail, but seemingly for no reason, like it just pasted in there with no transition or mention of importance. I’m all for getting a feel for what’s happening, but it’s like it’s trying too hard and the “author” had to keep reminding the function to add those details in.
Example: “My mom gives me a wide grin before we follow Bishop along dark wood doors into a huge dining room. The dark wood continues onto the floor and through the trim in the elegant room. She nods toward Luca, Archer, and Cain standing on the other side of the massive table. Levi is standing near the wolves and gives my mom a charming smile. “Are these your other mates?”
I’m momentarily distracted by the absolutely massive white oak table that dominates the space. It’s big enough to sit around twenty-five people. With the light table and cream walls, the dining room feels airy. The bank of windows behind the wolves also helps brighten up the space. I shrug at my mom’s question. “I dunno. All wolves look the same to me. It’s especially hard to tell the two blond meatheads apart.” I can’t say the whole thing with a straight,” page 217.
^^ not to mention the complete personality shift in the FMC with that wannabe joke🙄
Another RH supernatural school trope is the FMC being subjected to bullying. Never mind the fact that it makes no sense that she gets bullied and won’t stand up for herself when she does MMA, nor the fact that her SA seems to only be an unnecessary plot point to make her suffer and adds nothing to the overall depth of her character, but that after this, the “author” back tracks again and says Bishop is no longer a student Hawthorne Grove when Danielle’s entire purpose of bullying Izzy is because she wants Bishop for herself when he doesn’t even go to the university?? This just seems like a plug in to Chat GPT to add school discourse and seems no thought has actually been put into it.
All in all, this was not for me nor do I think it should be for anyone else. I apologize if these review was harsh, but I feel protective of the book world we as readers and true authors cultivated for one another and cannot help but to point out the potential imposter among us.
