The 'Lady Vigilante' Crime Series is a fast-paced, action-filled adventure that juxtaposes the quintessential 'Avon Lady' against the chauvinistic underbelly of 1940's New York. This is a very short, eerie story narrated by a magical entity who lives alone in the forest. The souls of all who enter the forest are laid bare to the entity, who then judges and kills all those with the blackest, most evil souls. The entity moulds the forest and nature into inexorable weapons, and no-one who has come to the forest with murder in mind will escape alive. Those deemed innocent, or capable of redemption, have their memories wiped, and go free. All magic has a cost, and the pain of the death falls not just on the person killed, but also onto the entity, who is doomed to live with the pain. Although increasing numbers of evil men come to the forest, inflicting an ever greater burden of pain and effort, draining the entity, the entity cannot cease passing judgement and carrying out the death sentences. The entity is awaiting the person responsible for all the evil, and for the fulfilment of a prophecy. I really liked this story, and particularly the twist at the end. I hope to read more books set in this world. I received this copy from the author in exchange for an honest review
Judgement by Hayley Camille. In the shadow of Mortwood Forest dwells the most prolific murderer of the Kingdom. The curse he carries, however, may also make him their saviour. In a world where magic is lost and innocence is stolen, a prophecy begins. The darkest intentions hidden within every man's soul are exposed, as Shadows and Light, and only one has the power to Judge them. But he is not what you expect. A great short story from hayley. I'm looking forward to the next one. 5*. Highly recommended.
Gillavray is a human boy with magical powers, who empathises with all living things at his home in Mortwood Forest. Taken from the hostility and danger at the Court of the late King Bearack by his mother (who teaches him to control his powers), after his father's death, he acts as a force of Nature to destroy murderers and those who come with victims to kill into the forest where he now lives alone. When he disposes of their evilness, he has to suffer the pain he inflicts when using his magic and natural inhabitants of the Forest and river nearby. He also has the ability to erase memories of himself and what he has done, to save them further suffering from those memories and to protect his identity as a type of vigilante will-o-the-wisp.
The new King, Brach, is even more tyrannical and evil than his father. Determined to capture Gillavray and seize his powers, Brach sends evil mercenaries into the forest night after night with victims to tempt Gillavray to reveal himself, but Gillavray's always one step ahead and manages to triumph in every situation.
How will the situation resolve itself - will good, (in whatever form it appears) triumph over evil and remove Brach from power? Or will the King be triumphant because he has powers of his own? What is Gillavray's true identity and where did his powers come from? Who is the pure girl-child Gillavray rescues from Brach's murderous intentions? And will she have faith in him to always overcome evil, when as she says, 'You're only a small boy'?
This spell-binding novella by Hayley Camille will thrill and cause you to think of what mankind is doing to the Natural world - and each other and how wisdom sometimes comes 'out of the mouths of babes...'. I would recommend it to fans of fantasy, mystery and morality-tales...you'll love it!
Hayley Camille has made a fan out of me. This is another short story that will make you want to continue to read the rest of the story. We find out it is lonely, has some magic and a seer of souls. It also is a murderer, but what is it? Another one you don't want to miss.
This quick and easy storyline is well-written, action-packed, fast-paced with paranormal/supernatural aspects. Since this novella ends somewhat abruptly, I am hopeful it could become be a series. The main character is developed vividly described as is the story itself. I enjoyed this departure from Hayley's other works. I voluntarily read a free ebook and this is my honest review.
