My name is Andrew Barrett and I live and work in West Yorkshire.
My CSI Eddie Collins and SOCO Roger Conniston books focus on the world of the crime scene investigator. I've been a CSI for over twenty-eight years, and try to inject an element of authenticity into each story.
And if you enjoy detectives with a difference, search out the new series featuring a sharp female lead character called DS Regan Carter.
Andrew Barrett's books were introduced to me some years ago. I am so glad they were. No matter what he writes, his uniqueness comes through in every book. This book is a brand new series, and I was chomping at the bit to get hold of it!
A Random Kill again, like his other books reek of real life. We meet DS Regan Carter, who has been moved to Leeds and the Major Crime Unit. Regan isn't happy, and it shows. She just feels like the odd one out. She hates death, and she will be surrounded by it soon enough!
Regan is such a character. She has the trademark sarcasm that Andrew Barrett's readers are used to from his previous series. That's more about the author, to be honest! Andrew has the skill to bring a dark story and lighten it with his humour. This does bring a little light relief from his gritty and realistic scenes.
I love a fierce and sarastic woman, and Regan has it all in spades. Although she does put her mask on, she is still determined that no one will stop her doing what she thinks needs doing!
The storyline is plotted perfectly, but I expect nothing less from this author. Just as you think it's going quiet, bang! There it goes again! With twists and turns in all the right places, this is a brilliant beginning, and I, for one, am looking forward to getting to know DS Regan Carter and her team! Well done on a fabulous new series, Andrew! Thanks to Andy Barrett for the gifted ARC in exchange for my honest review!
A Random Kill by Andrew Barrett is book 1 in the DS Regan Carter series, a new series from Andrew. DS Sheila Shambles dies on her last day off work, and so DS Regan Carter has been moved, unwillingly, to the Major Crime Unit in Leeds to replace her. Regan is not happy with the move and does not feel like she belongs. She hates dead bodies and is about to see plenty of them. She joins DI Tom Benson and their first case is a murder. She has to try so hard to be able to work with her new team. Regan is a master at sarcasm but also puts up a front. I love her Mum as she tells it like it is. It has plenty of humour and again, such great characters. I am looking forward to reading more about Carter. I just loved this book, and what a great ending. This is going to be another fabulous series from Andrew Barrett.
A Random Kill is the new series opener from the author of the excellent Eddie Collins CSI series, and is set within the same fictional world, with Eddie making cameo appearances, but you don’t have to have read those to enjoy this. In fact, a slightly different version of Regan appears in the last Eddie Book, Death Warning, so I was a bit confused at them appearing to meet for the first time here, when she already played an important role in that book. I decided not to worry about it as the differences are minor and probably necessary for the separate arcs for each series. I was delighted that Regan now gets her own series, which switches the focus from forensics to the gritty awfulness of policing Leeds’ mean streets.
Regan Parker is furious to find herself transferred from the divisional CID unit she’s worked at for ten years to the Major Crime Unit by her vindictive soon to be ex-husband. Most people would regard this as career progression, but Regan has a problem - she hates dead bodies, and being the new sergeant at the city’s main homicide unit means she will encounter lots of them. Her first case is a nasty one - a young mother has been gunned down in the street and her baby kidnapped, and this sets off cascade of corpses for Regan and her initially resentful team to investigate.
The preface to this book states “There is no animal cruelty featured in my novels.” Unfortunately for Barrett’s characters, but luckily for readers who like dark, gritty and occasionally gory crime fiction, no such consideration applies to humans. The body count here is high, as callous criminals make mayhem, and only Regan seems willing to do what it takes to stop them, when her senior officers seem more interested in playing politics than protecting the public. I can’t say I actually liked her much - she’s reckless, arrogant and mouthy, and cares more about getting the glory of arresting bad guys than the greater good, but she’s an entertaining heroine who will probably grow on me just as Eddie did.
Thanks to Andrew Barrett for the ARC. A Random Kill is published on October 4th.
We meet a new main protagonist here, Regan Carter, a sergeant, moved sideways into the Major Crime Unit. She's a strong character and an angry woman which leads to plenty of action and a lot of humour. She's also a bit of a loose cannon. I'm glad to report that we meet our old friend, Eddie Collins, and he and the prickly Regan get on well together. I enjoyed her part in the detection and loved the few dangling ends when all was sorted out. For me, it was an utterly brilliant story and I really want more of these characters.
For all you lovers of crime thrillers out there it seems we have another fantastic series on our hands from Andy Barrett. A Random Kill is the first book in the new Regan Carter series and if it is anything to go by, we have a lot to look forward to.
For eight years Regan has been working in a job she loved with a fantastic team at Ellen Road Police Station working in divisional CID as a Detective Sergeant, but she has now been transferred to the Major Crime Unit in Leeds, and not by choice. The first think we learn about Regan is she hates dead bodies, and she is about to meet a lot of them.
The story begins with a young mother being shot and her baby disappearing. Regan is assigned to the case to find out what has led to this terrible event and soon realizes there is local organized crime gang causing havoc throughout the town and things are going to get tough, really tough. She is going to have to break through barriers set in her way, not only by these criminals but also by management above her.
Regan does not always play by the rules, but wow does she get results. She is strong willed, tenacious and determined but also has a tragic past behind her which has built her strength and now recently divorced she must move on with her life, but this is also where we see the very human side of her. Regan’s parents were both police officers, but she has a very tumultuous relationship with her mother and misses her father who left the marriage, for reasons Regan has never been sure of.
Working with a new team, Regan including her new boss Tom Benson and teammate Gypsy Storm, are chasing Drake Sullivan a career criminal who is at the center of the events occurring. Lots of drugs are on the streets, people are dying, and a drug king named Bradshaw seems to be holding all the cards. Bradshaw is also after Sullivan who has done the dirty on him, so it is a race to see who can find him first. Regan and Gypsy go rogue taking matters into their own hands creating lots of excitement and suspense and creating those OMG moments where you are literally holding your breath.
Fantastic characters and a strong plot will have you turning the pages at great speed, I absolutely loved the book. Thanks to Andy Barrett for the ARC, I am already looking forward to the second book in this series and can’t wait to see where Regan’s character takes us next.
Andrew Barrett delivers a knockout debut in the DS Regan Carter series with "A Random Kill," a gripping police procedural that introduces a compelling new protagonist. DS Regan Carter, a fiery and rebellious red-headed detective, finds herself thrust into the Major Crime Unit, facing her greatest fear: death.
The plot ignites with seemingly random events - a colleague's death and a brutal murder-kidnapping - that quickly escalate into a high-stakes battle with organized crime. Barrett's masterful pacing builds tension throughout, leading to a climax that leaves readers breathless and eager for more.
Set in the same universe as Barrett's Eddie Collins series, "A Random Kill" benefits from cameo appearances that add depth and humor. The contrast between Eddie's sarcasm and Regan's impulsive energy creates a dynamic that enriches the narrative.
Barrett's skill in character development shines, particularly in his nuanced portrayal of Regan's complexities and her struggle to integrate into a new team. The result is a protagonist who is both flawed and irresistibly engaging.
For fans of police procedurals featuring strong female leads, "A Random Kill" is an absolute must-read. It sets a rock-solid foundation for what promises to be an outstanding series in the crime thriller genre. Barrett has crafted a tale that grabs hold from the first page and doesn't let go until the final, satisfying twist.
A big thank you to the author for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Meet Regan Carter, Detective Inspector. Recently transferred. She hates dead bodies and has been transferred to the location with the most deaths. Nobody wants her there. They had their own people to promote. Regan has her work cut out for her. This is the beginning of a new series by Andrew Barrett. What a wild ride. Just when you think it can’t get worse, it does. Fantastic introduction to Regan. She is fierce and determined and won’t let anybody stand in her. Whether that is good or bad remains to be seen. But enjoy the ride. Watch out for all the twists and turns. Can’t wait for the next book.
This is the first in a new series by this author and it's off to a great start. Regan Carter has been transferred to a new station where she is immediately disliked and doesn't go out of her way either to make a good impression on her new colleagues. She is straight into the action when a woman is shot dead and her baby boy is taken.
The story is gritty with links to drug gangs and people who have no qualms about killing each other. I found the pace relentless throughout and this was a real page-turner for me. Regan is a strong tough character and I found her determination admirable yet so frustrating at times. Her gung-ho tendencies ensure she is in the middle of danger throughout. There is even some sideline appearances here from our favourite CSI Eddie Collins. If the quality of the rest of the series comes close to matching this, we're in for a real treat.
Have just finished reading A Random Kill by Angrew Barrett. It is as good as his other books . It even features CSI Eddie Collins, though he only appears in it a couple of times. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next one in the series. Highly recommended and well worth a read. I'd hive it more than five stars if I could.
What a great way to start a new series. This book reaches out and grabs you right away. I am loving these characters. What a strong and takes-no-crap lead character. I loved this book so much and will be waiting impatiently for whatever comes next for her.
I’m a real fan of this author. He’s the original deal and writes fiction about his reality … he is that CSI from Leeds! WOW factor!!
This is a new series with a new lead, and this fiery red head has been transferred to the exact job she would never want — to be around dead bodies. DS Regan Carter takes over a newly vacated position and has to lead a team very loyal to its prior boss. Did I mention her office is in the same building as the infamous CSI, Eddie Collins?!
DS Carter comes to us fully loaded and wanting to get the bad guys who leave her the dead guys. By Chapter 5, I was wondering if she is the long lost sister, or daughter, of Eddie Collins, for she too has a ‘gift’ with expletive deleteds flying out of her mouth at just the right times. That she whispers to herself reveals a lot about her thinking, her damn-the-torpedos attitude, and her work ethic. Maybe Barrett will make Collins this woman’s love interest later in the series?
A Random Kill has everything you’d want to read in this genre. It’s this crime fiction series’ first installment, and a fast read because you just can’t close the book — you have to know what happens next! “
Welcome to DS Regan Carter’s world. Thanks to a bad divorce, she’s forced to move stations (down to an ex-husband who was her boss!) Carter doesn’t do dead bodies, but she has to now that she’s been moved to the Major Crime Unit.
Things don’t go well when she takes over from DS Sheila Shambles, who died after a fall. The team don’t like her and she struggles to fit in.
When a young mother is found dead and her baby kidnapped, Regan and the team soon realise that local gangs are involved, and the pace heats up.
Wow! What an introduction to a new series! This book is action-packed, and at times, downright terrifying.
Regan is a complex but great character. She has an incredibly funny sense of humour, and I took to her.
Her mother is another great character, one of those that you don’t know whether to love her or hate her!
An exciting & humorous police CSI procedural featuring new CSI DC Regan, who I'm sure, will give Eddie Collins a run for his money and Miriam and Benson a heart attack. Or an ulcer. Or both.
I love that we have more strong and fearless women featured!
No time is wasted getting the story started as the 'new interloper' to the team tries to fit in, a bit too hard maybe. Sarcasm and banter are part of what brings partners and teams together. Lots of action there is!
Obviously, violence is expected in this kind of book, but I wouldn't say it is gross or too much. It's a police procedural.
I definitely put this as one of my favorites in Andy's catalogue, and I am already looking forward to the next one!
I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am giving you my honest review.
Regan Carter, an ace detective, has been transferred from her old division where she was comfortable, accomplished and well liked to a spot at MCU, a division that deals with murders. She was not happy. She hated being near dead bodies and even more having to deal with them; they looked gross and smelled even worse. At MCU she was still an ace detective, but decidedly uncomfortable, untested and definitely not well liked.
She had not even settled into her desk, when her supervisor asked her if she would accompany him to the scene of a murder. Not wanting to appear as though she was holding back, she agreed to go. There she met Eddie Collins, a genius CSI, saw a female body slumped halfway on the sidewalk half in the street, and learned that there was a missing child that should have been with his mother. As she was digesting all that she had seen and learned, a distraught man ran onto the scene screaming for his wife and frantically asking about his child.
Andy Barrett is really good writer, really good at moving a story along, good at putting the reader at the scene, seeing all that characters see, feeling all that the characters feel. His background in police work as a CSI, helps him portray their work authentically. In this particular story, he displays the mastery of of a good mystery; building expectations, dashing hopes and rebuilding with confidence.
This is one of the best, if not the best story that he has written to date. I highly recommend it.
This is my first book from Andrew Barrett and what a book to start with and book one in the DS Regan Carter series. It had a great story line with gritty, gory dark crime fiction with also a good balance of humour. I feel that Eddie and Regan’s characters are like chalk and cheese but they work great together with his sarcasm and her energy. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Thanks to the author and @zooloosbooktours for the advance copy for me to review
The blurb DS Regan Carter never imagined she would end up in the Major Crime Unit, surrounded by the one thing she despises most: death. But when a young mother is brutally killed and her baby kidnapped, Regan is thrown into a terrifying battle with a local organized crime group. As she closes in on the gang-members, she must also face the horror of her own past. Regan struggles to keep her head above water.
But this is just the beginning. As the OCG begins to crumble and secrets are revealed, Regan finds herself facing a threat that hits dangerously close to home. With her job, her reputation, and her life on the line, she must use all her skills and ferocity to take down the criminals before they take her down first.
For fans of gripping police procedurals, and crime thrillers with strong female leads, A Random Kill is a must-read. Don’t miss out on this heart-pounding debut in the DS Regan Carter series.
A Random Kill is the first book in the new series DS Regan Carter by Andrew Barrett. I was drawn into A Random Kill’s world from the first page. I happen to be very invested in stories like A Random Kill at the moment. I can’t seem to get enough of crime stories.
A woman is crossing the street pushing her baby when shots rang out. Someone is shooting at her. She rushes across the street with her baby and as she is almost to the other side she is shot causing the baby to topple over into the street. The baby is taken.
DS Regan Carter is assigned to the case. Regan was transferred to the Major Crime Unit. Regan did not ask to be reassigned as she hates dead bodies. Regan thinks she is being punished. She doesn’t think she belongs in the Major Crime Unit. She loved her old job.
We get A Random Kill’s story from more than one view. We get to follow more than one character’s story. I enjoyed reading each character’s story. By reading more than one character’s point I get to know more about them and what happened in their part of the story rather than being told what happened from another character.
I can’t wait to read more in DS Regan Carter’s world. I can’t wait to see what crimes await us in the next book.
I highly recommend A Random Kill to anyone who likes a good crime thriller. Grab a copy of A Random Kill today!
A long awaited new book series from Andrew Barratt and I was not disappointed. A Random Kill features DS Regan Carter who has been transferred into the MCU (Major Crime Unit) from Divisional CID, something that she didn’t ask for and doesn’t want as she is averse to dead bodies. DS Regan Carter has problems with her new colleagues who are not very welcoming and she finds it hard to settle into her new position. She is a very feisty, somewhat arrogant character who wants to do things her way even if it means bypassing protocol, and is not afraid to argue with her new bosses. Her first case with her new team is the fatal shooting of a mother and the kidnap of her young son, not a good start for someone like DS Carter who hates dead bodies. The plot of Book 1 in this new series is both complex and fast moving. It will keep you turning the page to find out what is happening next. The final twist in the book leaves questions to be answered. This new book is a sure fire winner and I can’t wait to get my hands on Book 2. If you don’t mind bloodshed and gore then you will like this book. I highly recommend it.
Well well, Andrew Barrett has created quite a little diva in his new crime series, her name is DS Regan Carter. This girl is feisty, has attitude and doesn't make friends easily...either side of the law! Recently and unwillingly she has moved to MCU and has a whole new team to 'bond' with and she isn't accepted with open arms. That going to stop her doing her duty? Nah! Thrown into a murder investigation from day one ( she doesn't like dead bodies) and greivencies with her ex-husband, this is not the best start to her working week.
An exciting and gripping plot that deepens in complexity the more it moves along....it kept me riveted to my seat. It's fast paced and has unexpected twists spiralling the storyline into different directions. I loved the humour created from the no nonsense straight talking chats between the characters, gave me a giggle.
Hold onto your seats for this one, Regan has a tendency to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire! What a cliff hanger ending...you watch your back DS Carter!
I'm eagerly awaiting book 2. Hats off to Mr Barrett.
A Random Kill is excellent. Being a fan of Mr. Barrett's writing, I expected nothing less. The story focuses on Regan, who is forced to join the Major Crime Unit, something she hates. I won't spoiler the story further, just be assured there's murder, tension and a very real-world relatability to what follows. If you're familiar with the authors' other books, you'll be familiar with the tight plots, tense scenes, real-world situations and, above all, the interesting and believable characters. There's some sharp wit from some and relatable exasperation from others. The story grabs hold and simply refuses to let go until it's done with the reader. This is the type of book that the term 'page-turner' was coined for. Truly addictive reading.
Thank you for writing a flipping brilliant new series I am hooked. I want to be Regan Carter she really is a kick arse cop and you can tell there will be more trouble later. I won’t give anything away but I was hooked. I had today off to do things and just read until I’d finished instead 😂. You have to read this I had an ARC but will also buy it. 10 stars Andy and more please.
Regan - if there's trouble she will find it. And find it she does - in overdrive. The baby scene is horrific but realistic, that's how life goes much too often. Treat yourself to a superbly written, gut-wrenching novel. It is outstanding. I can't wait to see where Regan goes from here Highly Recommended.
'A Random Kill' is a great 'Tour de West Yorkshire Police Force'. I was drawn in right from the start and am now a proper fan of Andrew Barrett's newest quirky lead character - Regan Carter.
There are twists and turns, hints about who can or cannot be trusted, a satisfying conclusion and the promise of sequels. I'm ready, waiting and eager for the next book in the series!
Meet Andrew Barrett’s new detective, a redhead with attitude who doesn’t like to follow the rules. She wants the bad guys locked up. She comes from a family of cops, was married to a cop, and she knows her stuff.
New to the Major Crime Unit, Regan Carter is trying to fit in, and solve the latest murder.
No spoilers, but Regan and other members of the team, some who we already know, are on the case.
A Random Kill is the first book in a new series in which we meet DS Regan Carter. Andrew is the author of the Eddie Collins CSI books, and if you’ve read them you know what a fantastic writer he is, and if you haven’t you should, you’ll be in for a treat. DS REGAN Carter (Parker) has just been transferred to MCU from Elland Road station Leeds and she is not pleased, in fact she is fairly angry. Firstly it’s her ex husband who has engineered her transfer and secondly she hates dead bodies, especially those that crawl with things, and most of all she hates the smell. On her first day in her new job she finds that she’s replaced a recently deceased well loved and highly respected Shona Shambles, known as Shush, and Regan is finding it hard stepping into her shoes. On Regans first day her new job DI Tom Benson tells her they have been called out to the murder of a young mother. Regan gets to work realising quite quickly there is nothing ordinary about this viscous crime. As the investigation gets underway it soon becomes clear that Regan is something of a loose canon, she has no compunction in ignoring instructions from her boss and doing things her way. We also get to meet Eddie Collins again, he is called to the murder scene as senior CSI. The book is fairly fast paced, it has some humour, I read it in a day. The book is a compelling read , it is very well crafted and held my attention throughout with a twist at the end I didn’t see coming. I want to know what happens with Regan Carter in the next book in this series, it is the mark of a good author who can keep you invested in the characters in a book and Andrew Barrett is such an author
A Random Kill by Andrew Andy Barrett opens with the brilliantly realized scene of DS Sheila Shambles, Maltesers in hand, meeting her unexpected end. Her loss however, creates an opening in Leeds MCU. Enter one Regan Carter, being transferred out of spite from Elland Rd. CID, and the making of a gripping new series is set.
Regan, barely able to make sense of her new surroundings, is sent to the scene of a young mother killed on the streets while pushing her child in a pram. But where is the child? You would be mistaken to think this is just another missing child trope. Barrett takes this storyline mainstay and the police procedural itself, and works them into something richly engaging- a complex, character driven story, which sets the shifting life of Regan Carter against the shifting world of policing. The writing is taut and smart, capturing the insidious drip of organized crime and its callous effect on everyday life. With his Eddie Collins series Barrett became one of my ‘go to writers’. Regan Carter now doubles down on this for me with its grittiness, moments of laugh out loud humour, brief appearances by other loved Collins characters, and one of those endings which just shakes you. I don’t know where his imagination will take him next, but I will be there ready to read the results.
(A Random Kill is released in the States on October 4, 2024. I had my copy pre-ordered, but was then given the wonderful opportunity to read the ARC).
A new novel from Andrew Barrett is always a source of excitement. A new novel and a new character, doubly so. Set in the familiar surrounds of the city of Leeds, with a supporting cast featuring familiar names; Tom Benson, Sid, even Eddie Collins making an appearance; We are introduced to DS Regan Carter. Another complex character tainted by her past infecting her present, and with an uncertain future, Carter appears to get herself in trouble due to her own beliefs, ethics, and determination to get the job done. In A Random Kill, Carter trades blows with members of a local drugs gang who seem, even by their low standards, to be highly unscrupulous and hellbent on double-crossing their own. Needless to saym this is another page-turner from Mr Barrett, complex heroes that you want hug one moment, scream at the next, the kind of bad guys you'd cross the road to avoid and a plot that twists and turns more than a Swiss mountain road. A highly enjoyable and absorbing read.
A Random Kill by Andrew Barrett. DS Reagan Carter book 1. I really did enjoy this book. I got into it straight away. I liked Reagan. I did like the team Tom Benson, Mike Broadley, Martin Dixon, Freya Hardcastle, and then there is Eddie Collins, Dace, Joseph, Gypsy Storm, and Sid. Twisty and gripping. I couldn't put it down. I did love how Reagan was. Wow, I certainly didn't see that coming. I did like the fight scene. I did like the ending. I'm really looking forward to the next book.
Introducing a feisty Detective Sergeant Andrew Barrett has come up with a new character for this exciting Leeds based police procedural thriller. Regan Parker/Carter is moved into the Major Crimes Unit. It's a move she doesn't want and she is resented by her new colleagues. Her methods do not fit well with her superiors. This is a fast-moving story with some sharp twists and turns and with a cliffhanger and teaser at the end. I feel there is bound to be a follow-up book, and I'm looking forward to it. There's an appearance by Barrett's character, CSI Eddie Collins, from his other series set in the same location. I found this an enjoyable book with an interesting and compelling new character, though I would warn that the book has a lot of blood and gore
The first in this series by Andrew Barrett featuring the very likeable DS Regan Carter. This was a fast-paced and exciting story from beginning to end. Regan is fearless, a little too fearless at times, which puts her life in danger. She is smart and brave, and I look forward to seeing what happens next for Regan and her team. It was nice to see CSI Eddie Collins make an appearance as well. I highly recommend this book.
This is a new venture on Andrew's part adding a tough as nails but still feminine detective Sargent named Regan. She has red fiery hair to match her disposition. As of late she has shrugged off her slimy husband only to be transferred to a new position in a new department that deals with dead bodies - something she hates. She is determined to catch her criminal quarry and is relentless in her pursuit. She has a new supervisor named Benson that she keeps informed of what she has done but never before she does it. Benson reports to the big boss, Miriam, who is not always pleased with Reagan's methods.
A woman is murdered in broad daylight and her baby is kidnapped. No witnesses, no fingerprints, no leads. Regan's first case before she even settles in. How lucky is she?
Strap yourself in as you start this book. It moves quickly and is a page turner. This is a five star read.
The author adds vibrant scenes and fills them with remarkable characters. He even manages to intertwine our favorite Eddie Collins now and then in the mix. You will love this book! Buy it while it is still on sale.
