The gang’s all here. Max was more involved in this one and they are firming up their future though it’s still sad that he’ll grow old and Zoe will not 😭😭😭 so something must be done about that.
Another Excellent installment of the Accidental Alchemist series. In the latest novel Zoe Faust finds herself investigating why someone would be interested in her Brother and Sister Painting enough to track her down to offer to buy it. But she finds out about a local paint pigment company, Dorian's new cookbook, a less local art historian, a secret society, and is there more alchemy afoot? Find out how everything unfolds in The Alchemist of Brushstrokes and Brimstone.
THE ALCHEMIST OF BRUSHSTROKES & BRIMSTONE by Gigi Pandian The Eighth Accidental Alchemist Mystery
Zoe Faust’s most treasured possession is a portrait of her with her brother painted by Perenelle Flamel. Both Zoe and Perenelle are put on guard when inquiries about the painting begin. Why the interest after so many years? Zoe is devastated when her painting is stolen, but another theft and a subsequent murder make things even more concerning. Is someone targeting Zoe? Or Perenelle? Is it about alchemy or corporate espionage? Zoe and her friends will join forces to not only retrieve the painting, but allow a gifted artist from the past take her true place in history, while keeping their ultimate secret safe.
The melding of science and art is at the heart of the eighth Accidental Alchemist Mystery. I loved the kernels of art history dropped, especially the facts about the creation of paints, along with its dangers. The topic is as fascinating as alchemy, indeed it is a type of alchemy unto itself, whether or not you're using brimstone!
Adding subtle humor Dorian remains my favorite character. I admire his creative process and love how his chapters begin with selections from his Culinary Alchemist's Toolbox, a book, if finished, I would absolutely buy! I also love how Dorian gets Nicholas Flamel involved in his escapades.
The mystery also deals with loss on several levels. Losing a loved one is never easy and to help with grief some cling to something tangible to remember them. Thus it is with Zoe and why the theft of her painting is so horrific for her. What lengths will you go to and how much will you risk to keep the memories of lost loved ones alive?
In addition to death, there's also loss of recognition. It's a sad truth that women have continually been erased from history, so I'm always pleased when I see this truth being acknowledged and attempts being made to share their stories. Phillipe Hayden may be fictional, but there are many female artists of that time who never received their fair do's, perhaps readers will be encouraged to learn more about these, and other women, who history tries to erase.
The climactic scene had my jaw dropping to the floor with a horrific loss of another kind.
A compelling mystery THE ALCHEMIST OF BRUSHSTROKES & BRIMSTONE is a journey through grief, art, and lost women's history.
Another exciting, entertaining and educational installment in the Accidental Alchemist series! The Alchemist of Brushstrokes and Brimstone, book 8 in the series (9 if you count the 'The Lost Gargoyle of Paris' novella numbered 4.5) has Zoe and her 'Scooby gang' of loved ones in the art world this time around thanks to a murder and other mayhem that rope them in. If it's been a while since you read the last book in the series, there are recap moments in the narration to remind you of key events; if you're new to the series and starting here you won't feel lost wondering what's going on but not every key detail is reiterated to catch you up all the goings on of the full series. My suggestion is always to read a series in order so if you want the full benefit of the overarching storyline without spoilers, then begin with book 1 of the series, The Accidental Alchemist. Beloved characters return, some of whom may have been absent in the last book, and they've grown in multiple ways. Gargoyle Dorian is essentially the same although his current literary endeavor is a cookbook this time around rather than a Gothic novel. On the subject of cooking, one of the goodies at the end of the book are recipes to satisfy your sweet tooth that are vegan, one with a gluten free variation. There is also a bibliography to support the factual art information mixed in with the story's fictional elements; the author's note breaks down fact from fiction if the story content inspires you to research painting, the creation of pigments or other topics. The story is filled with twists and turns, unreliable and shady characters, misdirection and other techniques to keep you turning pages, wondering who's up to what, whodunnit, etc. I figured out the 'baddie' slightly before the reveal but other readers may piece together the clues earlier than I did. I still had fun reading and falling in love with the characters all over again (Perenelle was my fave this time around) and rooting for them to prevail. There is humor amongst the mystery and intrigue, suspense and action along with cleverly formed chapter endings many of which are cliff hangers that tempt you to continue reading; I kept reading longer than I planned to every time I sat down with the book. Within the chapters, the core mystery story and Dorian's cookbook overlap in a way that makes the latter relevant to the mystery and its investigation. If you're the type of reader who does not read daily certain details do get reiterated along the way so you don't have to start over if it's been a while since you last read any of the book; for those reading daily those reiterations are helpful but not annoying in their repetition as with any mystery story details are key and there are many to keep track of. There is at least one moment that is more fantastical than I remember in the series so far but it fits beautifully within the confines of the story and may bring tears to your eyes. The ending is a good one with certain non-major plot threads that will likely dominate the next book in the series left up in the air but still addressed. You know whodunnit and why so all's well that ends well in that regard anyway. It left me satisfied and also eager to read the next installment; that's been the case with all the books in the series. Gigi Pandian is also author of several other series and a teaser chapter of her Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt series is included in the book so you get loads of bonus content over and above a page turning mystery that will make you laugh, possibly cry and cheer, and where you might solve the mystery ahead of the reveals. I highly recommend the whole Accidental Alchemist series for a fun solvable cozy mystery series with a dose of the fantastical. I've read several from Pandian's Secret Staircase series as well and can recommend those for their fun and more complicated mysteries; I never solve those mysteries but that doesn't diminish my enjoyment reading them.
Overall, this was a disappointing addition to the series.
As with the other books in this series, there is a lot of repetition. A recap about characters when you first encounter them is fine, but this goes into extra detail on more than one occasion, which can detract from the story. The language is overly formal, meaning the flow of speech or narration isn’t always smooth. For example, the characters consistently refer to Zoe’s painting by its full title each time (“the Brother and Sister”) rather than referring to it as “the painting”. Zoe always refers to her truck by the year, colour and make rather than just saying her truck. This leaves the speech not always feeling realistic.
With the other books, I could understand how Zoe made her deductions and follow her train of thought. With this one, it seemed that 80% of the book was the characters not knowing what was happening before Zoe just pulled an idea out of what seemed like thin air.
There seems to be underlying tension between Zoe and Dorian at points, with Dorian just seeming to want some acknowledgment of his value as a friend and of his own space in the house, which Zoe seems oblivious to and focused on her own needs. This also doesn’t seem to go anywhere or get resolved, missing a chance for real character development.
If you took the repetition and unnecessary detail out of this book, it would be significantly shorter but more enjoyable.
I've been a fan of the Accidental Alchemist series since the first book and this latest addition to the series is another great read. Zoe Faust, the 400+ year old protagonist, found that her talent with plants and potions was alchemy and her studies with Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel helped her to understand and advance her skills. In additional to the accident of discovering her role as an alchemist, her eternal life was another accident as she was searching for a way to save her beloved brother's life. She's now settled into a new life in Portland OR with her living gargoyle, tea shop owner boyfriend and a tight group of friends including Nicholas and Perenelle.
In the new book, the theft of a painting of Zoe and her brother painted by Perenelle using alchemical paints leads to a murder investigation and danger for Zoe and her friends. The exciting climax made me wonder if all of them would survive or if some of the characters would leave the series permanently!
While this book can be read as a standalone, reading the series in order allows you to meet the characters as they become part of Zoe's world and to follow them as they grow and change. If you haven't discovered this series yet, please start with The Accidental Alchemist and keep reading until you get to this exciting new book!
I'm huge fan of this series that was a favourite since I read the first instalment. I'm always delighted to catch up with Zoe, Dorian, Max, and their friends as they evolves and their character arcs are like those of real life people. This is the most complex and intriguing story: there's a mystery but there's also a lot to learn about how dyes evolved and the role of women in art history. Both topics plays a relevant role and I loved learning while being hooked to the twisty and solid mystery. This is a multilayered story: there's the mystery, a pinch of paranormal, the life of the characters but also a look at how knowledge was lost or the standard art history often forget the role played by women unless they were famous for other reason. Gigi Pandian is a talented writer of mystery and a master storyteller and this is a good example of how well she writes It was an entertaining and gripping read and I can't wait to read the next one. It can be read as a stand alone as there's plenty of backstory but reading the series in order will help to enjoy every aspect of this story. I strongly recommend the whole series and this is one of the best installment Many thanks to Gigi Pandian for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.
“A Spellbinding Mystery with Art, Alchemy, and Intrigue”
Gigi Pandian once again delivers a captivating blend of mystery and magic in The Alchemist of Brushstrokes and Brimstone. This installment finds alchemist Zoe Faust on a quest to recover a stolen painting linked to her late brother—an artwork that holds the secrets of a forgotten artist known for breathtaking colors. With her ever-charming gargoyle companion, Dorian, by her side, Zoe must unravel the mystery while navigating the dangers that come with it.
Pandian’s strength lies in her rich historical details, vibrant characters, and the seamless integration of alchemy into the plot. The mystery unfolds at a steady pace, with twists that keep the reader engaged. The blend of art, history, and supernatural elements makes for a unique and immersive experience.
One of my favorite parts? The recipes at the end! They look absolutely delicious, and I can’t wait to try them all. It’s such a fun bonus that makes the book even more enjoyable.
The only reason this isn’t a 5-star read is that certain sections felt a bit slower than expected, and I wished for even more depth in the resolution. That said, it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable book with a satisfying ending. Fans of the series will not be disappointed!
BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES -- I LOVED IT! CAN'T WAIT TO LISTEN TO THE AUDIO!! The whole gang is here for this one - All of my favorites. Zoe has made her own wonderful supportive family throughout the centuries with loalty and love. Now they come together to solve a mystery that will have you stumped until the very end. As usual the tension is broken at just the right times with the hillarious antics of Dorian the living gargoile. If you haven't started this series, don't worry, Gigi does a great job of filling in the blanks so that you can read this one and understand what's going on. I received this ARC in exchange for my candid review and if I don't like something, I'll be specific in my criticism. I have read all of Gigi's books, many of which I purchased, and have enjoyed every one. Now, if you enjoy listening to your books, Julia Motyka is one of the very best. She makes the characters come to life and makes you a part of the gang. Treat yourself to this book right this minute!
I love this book!! I enjoy Gigi Pandian’s writing and especially The Alchemist series and this is the best one yet!! I just couldn’t put it down. The ending was mostly shocking, but also beautiful and completely unexpected! Ms. Pandian’s mysteries are always so original and based on very interesting historical information and this one is no different. There were so many interesting details about paints, painting and the history of painters. And, of course, Dorian, everyone’s favorite gargoyle, is a great part of the mystery. I love the complex series of characters and community Ms. Pandian has created and I really enjoyed visiting that world again! I’m looking forward to the next mystery in this series. I’m sure it will be good, but it will be hard to top this fantastic entry!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to review this book. All opinions are mine.
Best Accidental Alchemist book by Gigi yet. 1. At one times, alchemy (forerunner of chemistry) and artists worked together to create paint for artists. But 500+ years ago, brimstone (sulfur), mercury, and other ingredients were toxic to those that breathed the paint fumes or absorbed into their skin. 2, Also long ago, female alchemists and artists were shunned and denied credit for their discoveries or creations. Often paintings were attributed to the males in the family or the artist was were given a male name. 3. Zoe, Dorian, Max and the entire gang must solve the theft of two paintings and later solve a murder while working in the 21st century using clues from 1. & 2. listed above. 4. Clever situations, intrigue, and lies abound. Good characterization, love and plants flourish, Dorian writes a Cookbook. 5. Cannot wait for the next book where they travel to London.
Rec'd ARC for review. We're already at number eight in the series. How Zoe and Dorian have evolved into quite the sleuths! As always, Pandian's writing keeps the narrative at a quick pace, and the reader is drawn in, wanting to read just one more chapter each time, with a slight disappointment when there are no more pages to turn. Perfect for a mystery series.
**SPOILER ALERT** Modern-day Oregon meets history, with a vegan lifestyle, various types of alchemy, multiple mysteries, intrigue, and a secret society all tossed in the mix. Zoe's beloved portrait of her brother is stolen after she and Nicolas receive several messages asking after it. When another of Perenelle's paintings in a similar style is stolen in town, Zoe knows something is afoot, and she'll do anything to get her painting back, even staying out after dark despite her 'solar challenges' (23). At the heart of the mystery is the art of paint making, practiced by Perenelle for ages, and studied by the victims of the other painting theft, Renaissance White. In their quest to create paints in the old ways, it's possible Renaissance White delved into backward alchemy to achieve their goal, which leads to dangerous products on the market. Zoe and Dorian are joined by Max, Perenelle, Nicolas, Brixton, Veronica, Ethan, and Harry while they try to solve the mystery, recover the painting, and save their friends from harm without Detective Vega chastising them too much.
In addition to sleuthing his heart out, Dorian is writing a cookbook, with an emphasis on his specialty, culinary alchemy. Perhaps this will be published in the next novella and Dorian will have convinced Nicolas to play the author on tour. He continues to be quite a dramatic yet comedic character. Dorian rushes to the attic with his rolling pin aloft as a weapon, ready to fight the intruder, and Poirot runs in his veins ('"Nobody," said Dorian, "is above suspicion."'/ '"April Salazar died late at night while in a locked laboratory." He paused for dramatic effect. "A locked room murder!"'p.159).
There's a throwback to the first few books in the series, wherein Dorian needs Zoe to save him from his stone-cold fate that was tied to backward alchemy through his book that was stolen previously, Non Degenera Alchemia.
Tobias shows up in name only, but his contact in the FBI is certainly key to the story. Perhaps he'll show up in book nine, though it sounds like that'll be another overseas adventure, at least for Dorian and Zoe.
The cover illustration lines up with the previous covers stylistically, and includes hints of the tale with the sun and moon, Dorian in the garden, and a bee possibly flying counterclockwise as an ominous portent hidden in plain sight.
Book 8 of the Accidental Alchemist Series is another wonderful adventure! When Zoe's last connection to her brother is stolen, she is on the hunt to recover her lost painting! Along the way she finds a dead body, a secret society and a forgotten artist. With the help of Dorian and her friends, can Zoe solve the murder, find her painting and show the world th forgotten artist? I couldn't stop reading until I finished!! Can't wait until #9!!! ♥️💜
You can't go wrong with an art heist, murder, high tech science, and correcting history. Another charming adventure with Zoe, Dorian, Max and the alchemy gang. Pandian's The Accidental Alchemist series never disappoints. It's a great way to get out of your head and unwind at the end of the day. Sooooo excited the next book is in the works and we get to travel to London. Keep the books coming Gigi! Maybe the next one can have a few more recipes from Dorian. ;-) Thanks for the ARC.
I was impatiently waiting for this installment and had preordered the audio as soon as I could. There is always a good mystery, wonderful characters, an in-depth history lesson on an arcane subject, and fun fantastical elements that are unique to the series and author. Loved this latest episode! Julia Motyka is an inspired voice artist. #TheAlchemistOfBrushstrokesAndBrimstone #AccidentalAlchemistMysteriesBk8 by #GigiPandian #Audiobook
Sometimes, if we are incredibly fortunate, we luck into a series that grabs hold of our imagination, and never lets go. The Accidental Alchemist is that kind of delight. I can't believe I will have to wait months before book number nine shows up! Gigi, thank you for all the hours of sleep I have missed because I had to read just one more chapter. It was worth it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this entertaining series.
I love the Accidental Alchemist series. It has gotten even better with the addition of Perenelle and Nicolas Flamel. In this book, Perenelle’s painting of Zoe and her brother is stolen. Zoe must find out what has happened to it. There are multiple threads of inquiry. There are some idealistic hopes for outcomes. I was surprised by the ending. I love the narrator for the series, so I always read this series via audiobook.
It's always a delight when Pandian publishes another book. They are consistently entertaining, well constructed, and a pure delight. This series is especially fun with the historical references from the various times the three alchemists have experienced. There are missing paintings, people who aren't who they claim toe be, and a possible deadly paint!
Another fascinating mystery with an eclectic cast. When Zoe's treasured painting of herself and her brother is stolen, it is only the beginning of a mystery centering on recreating the lost colors of renaissance painters, using modern techniques—and omitting poisonous ingredients. Very fast paced and hard to put down.
One of the best ones. I’m still a bit frustrated everytime the author retells. Story everyone should know by now, example, why Dorian is a talking gargoyle or what he was supposed to, or why Brixton came over. Exhausting to keep hearing it and sometimes twice in the same book.
But other than that, pretty entertaining, this one. Interested to see what happens next.
Such a good instalment, and great progression for the characters. It is always so nice to get back in touch with characters that you like so much. And the whole gang in the AA world are great. There is always something slightly off with Perenelle, for me, but this fleshed her out, and really brought her to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and Julia’s narration is once again brilliant.
I've been reading the series and get the books as they come out. It's so cool to have people that don't age and gargoyle that cooks. The 3 teenagers are awesome also. Just wonderful writing!
Love the secret society idea and Perenelle Flamel. Her character I fell in love with straight away. Love that her and Nicolas characters are growing book to book. Glad the three kids are back, misses them in the last book.
I have enjoyed this series and will read the next one as it ended with a perfect set up. But it just seemed to drag a little more than the earlier books but maybe that's because it's just getting a little too repetitive.
Murder, theft and mystery. This book has Zoe, Max, Pernelle, Nicholas and, of course, Dorian trying to solve an art theft with an alchemy twist. . I love this series so much. Cozy mysteries with a gargoyle chef.
