Alex Bain #2

Death and Dark Obsessions

Rate this book
In Death and Dark Obsessions, Kristen Coar delves deeper into the gripping world of Alex Bain, where the line between ordinary and monstrous is not just blurred; it's obliterated.

Set in a contemporary fantasy world brimming with magic, danger, and searing romance, this story is perfect for fans of series like Anita Blake, The Hollows, Crescent City, or the Night Huntress.

Haunted by past battles and sadness following Lucas' departure, Alex is thrust back into the fray when a brutal murder threatens to unravel the very fabric of their world. Teaming up with old allies, and the Other Tabard's Inn's charming bartender Finn, she navigates a web of shifters, fae, and witches, all while grappling with the darkness growing within her.

As the death toll mounts and the sinister machinations of the Hidden Village reveal themselves, will Alex be able to save her friends without succumbing to her vampiric heritage? Will she allow Finn's kindness to mend her fractured heart? Perhaps most importantly of all, will she ever find out how Argo, her snarky corgi roomie from hell, fixes his gourmet meals?

Prepare for a tale that tests the limits of love, loyalty and the strength to stand in the light, even as darkness encroaches.

I was excited to dive back into the world of Alex Bain and it did not disappoint. We got to see Alex being fierce and strong again. Always love a stabby FMC!

We are introduced to a new character, a sassy bartender with a past of his own. I loved how he was a grounding presence for Alex and helped her out when she needed help. I loved that he never made Alex feel small or inadequate and assisted her perfectly.

The new characters were intriguing and we got to see more of the supernatural world living alongside humans. The enemy from the first book came back and created more drama. But, it felt like they were forgotten by the end(?)

I wish we got to see them fall in love, which Finn wanted as well but wasn’t delivered. There was a lot of importance given to the mate bond that felt similar to the first book. The steamy scenes were fun but their dialogues felt repetitive.

I’m very happy with how it turned out and loved the dynamic between Finn and Alex! Finally, a healthy relationship!!!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me an ARC to review.

This was really enjoyable to read! I have not read the first book in this series so this was my introduction to the world of Alex Bain and friends.

This was the first time I’ve read anything where a character was a dhampir, so it was interesting to discover that the FMC is one and to read about her physical changes and feelings while in battle, courtesy of her dhampir nature .

Argo is a great character; the fact that he is a corgi who is basically a master chef and who also smells like brimstone was just so funny to me. I love the relationship between him and Alex.

I found Finn, the FMC, to be very interesting— a quiet, smirky bartender who seems a little broody but who turns out to be a whole lot of something else!

I loved the world building here, and I will definitely be reading the first book as well as waiting for the next in the series to come out. I need more adventures with Alex, Finn, and friends!

You know we all have to pay our dues when reading fantasy. We have to learn characters, worlds, magic, powers, all of it. And this book brings in so many of the answers I was looking for from book one and leaving me with even more for book three!

Finn could not have been more perfect for Alex in all the ways she needed after everything she went through in book one and to be honest, Finn will forever be my choice for Alex. It goes against my love for morally gray but with the understanding of Alex’s life, her thoughts about who she is, what she is and her way of life… Finn is always there to reassure and comfort her and I ADORE IT.

Even Argo creates a bond with Finn which was flabbergasting for me as he is so insanely protective of her. Which only makes me life Finn that much more.

The pray vs predator story did throw me for a loop as I really didn’t see that coming or how it played out. I was quite taken aback but really enjoyed it! It made so much sense and gave us an opportunity to learn even more about where some of the characters came from, what their lives were like before Alex’s story and the relationships look like in their lives.

We get some spice, we get the banter, we get questions answered, we get our heart broken and we get set up perfectly for book three!

Remember how I said I wouldn't mind a love triangle to shake things up? I change my mind. I'm Team Finn 100% and I will gladly send Lucas to find another happily ever after elsewhere.

DEATH AND DARK OBSESSIONS picks up shortly after where the first book left off, though the mystery we're following is different and we dive even deeper into the paranormal society that we've only just scratched the surface of in book 1. Werewolves are being hunted and are dying mysteriously. To solve the case, Alex is of course helped by her cop friend, Izzie, and Otto, who joined the team at the end of the previous book (I love that he's part of the team and, well, everything that comes with it), and then there's Finn, the charming fae bartender. I do remember seeing him in the first book, but I was honestly surprised to see him get a bigger role now. Am I sad about it? Absolutely NOT! Alex and Finn are great together, and though things move rather quickly, there was a valid reason for it and it worked really well.

Oh and yes, of course Argo is there, too. I adore this dog with all my heart.

Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

The story picks up six months after the events of the first book. While peace has somewhat returned, Alex is still grappling with the aftermath of the traumatic events from last October.

Set once again in Chicago, Alex, Izzie, Otto, and a silver-haired newcomer are confronted with a series of brutal murders targeting supernatural beings. The demonic corgi is also back, delighting everyone with expertly prepared meals. In this installment, we finally learn how he manages to pull off his culinary magic.

The ending is open, offering plenty of leads for the third book, but thankfully without a harsh cliffhanger.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; the pacing was excellent, and the characters continued to captivate me. I can't wait to dive into the third installment and hope that book four won't be far behind!

*Thank you to this amazing Author, Kristen Coar, for gifting me an e-ARC of this amazing and exciting second installment in the Alex Bain universe*

This book... *sigh*
The relationship between Alex and Finn builds in a natural and romantic way and when the dam breaks, baby, the emotions are heavy!

I LOVED that they got so fierce to protect each other and something magical happens... won't spoil it for you!

I can not get enough of this series! I was so heartbroken with how the first book ended. How could it end like that?! I am so elated to see that Alex has dealt with it better than I did. 😂
Picking up the pieces and moving forward was clearly not easy for her, and I admire the way Coar depicts Alex's grieving period. Relationships are messy, heartbreak can be physically painful, and people cope in any way they know how. Even if it's not the most healthy of methods. I am glad she had friends to help her pick up the pieces. It's interesting that her extracurricular activities brought her to Lucas, then in turn to Finn as well. I feel like her bond with Lucas was more primal and instinctual, where her relationship with Finn is emotional and empathetic. Regardless, Coar makes Alex's turmoil realistic and her overcoming the heavy loss, making her even stronger a major theme in this book. I am curious to see how Alex's powers continue to develop. These books are filled with non-stop action and mystery. Also, we need to break down Argo and make him spill his secrets. I'm dying to learn more about this prophecy! I am on the edge of my seat with that ending. Needing to know what happens next, I can't wait for the next book!

Holy Cow, was this so much better than the first. I had mixed emotions and was only really invested in Argo from book 1, but this sequel gave so much more depth to all the characters as well as the story and supernatural background setting. And can we talk about Finn? I love his interactions with Argo as well, seeing them take care of Alex was chef's kiss. I can't wait to see what the next books have in store!

I very much enjoyed this book, and will be anxiously waiting for book 3 to see what transpires for Alex, and if it will really be the conclusion of her story.
The balance of action, romance, and suspense kept me engaged and wanting to hide away from my responsibilities to finish.

I loved Alex in the first book but I am absolutely obsessed with her after this one. She just keeps getting more and more badass and I love that for her.
Finn is EVERYTHING. Mysterious, beautiful war hero with a thing for praise. 🫠 Death and Dark Obsessions feels very well timed as it made me fall even more in love with this world and the characters and smoothly delivered me at the edge of my seat, waiting for book 3!! 😈

Small details that I loved:
⚔️ Unsolved murders with lots of suspects
⚔️ trauma healing journey
⚔️ Argo’s hilarious corgi sidekick shenanigans 🫶🏼 I absolutely adore him
⚔️ unique system of magic
⚔️ corporate vampire hunter is my new goal athletic
⚔️ stunning character art throughout the book 🥰
⚔️ Alex being ridiculously OP
⚔️Creepy, culty conspiraciessss
⚔️ Found-family love 💜
⚔️ sweet and respectful (but spicyyyy) romance
⚔️ truly stab-able villains
⚔️ THE WITCHES. I love the witches so much. 😂

In depth review:
First, I enjoy Alex’s POV so much because her internal dialogue is so hilarious and relatable. I was not-so-quietly laughing to myself at several points.
Secondly, I just love a really really well done modern fantasy. The world building is genuinely so good in this series. It feels comparable to Crescent City X Blade X Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a sprinkle of Sookie Stackhouse. There are so many aspects of this series that are unique and interesting, especially the system of magic and the way that mating bonds work. It really makes the series stand out against others in this genre. I was very happy with the pacing and the introduction of so many new characters/species!
I don’t want to spoil book 1 for anyone who hasn’t read it yet, so I will just say that I am STOKED about the romance plot set up for book 3. If you know, you know. 😉 and if you don’t, READ THESE BOOKS and then message me your thoughts!

SWOON!! The second installment in the Alex Bain series was everything my heart needed! After the heart wrenching ending to book one, I was in desperate need of Finn. Death and Dark Obsessions is an urban, paranormal romantasy with great dialogue, fantastic characters and a captivating storyline.

Alex is still recovering from the events from book one and has fully immersed herself into work - both daytime corporate and nighttime paranormal investigator. A new threat seems to have arrived to Chicago and is taking on some of the strongest paranormals in the city. Alex and Izzie have expanded their team to include Otto. The group quickly realizes the threat is far more than any of them were prepared for and Alex reaches out to her favorite bartender, Finn for some inside help.

Finn is exactly what I wanted for Alex! He is funny, thoughtful, patient, strong and the perfect example of a cinna-man! I loved seeing Alex open up after her heartbreak and the new connection develop. I missed getting to see as much of Izzie in this book but she definitely seems to have her own romance blooming! Argo is of course, always a favorite. I just want to snuggle the witty little corgi butt!

I loved the growth in Alex throughout this book. I felt her character developed so much and seeing her struggle with accepting herself was beautiful and tragic. I also appreciated seeing deeper into the paranormal world as a whole instead of focusing just on the vampire side. Witches, weres, fae...yes please!

This book brings out so many emotions! I laughed, blushed and wanted to cry - any book that can seamlessly make you feel all the things is a great one in my opinion! I am eagerly awaiting book three now!

ARC Review 🤍

I absolutely loved this book! Book 1 (Death & Sweet Temptations) left me completely heartbroken & this one put it back together with so much care & love 💜

After everything that happened with Lucas I felt completely destroyed but then comes along Finn in Death & Dark Obsessions 😍 The knight in shining armor we did not know we needed 💜

I love the chemistry between Alex (our sassy & strong FMC) & Finn (our MMC in this book) 💜 from the beginning the attraction between them was undeniably there. I was even more surprised because he managed to form a bond with our protective & loyal corgi from hell Argo 😍 The emotions, relationship & love were written in such a way that felt so natural.

As I mentioned previously book 1 broke both my heart & our FMC’s heart. I can honestly say m Coar did such an amazing job of showing Alex’s grieving process that along the way she healed my heart too 💜

The world building was amazing. This book mostly just reinforced what book 1 put in place.
The character development was amazing! Every time I came across a character for the first time the author did not hesitate to fill me in with details about them.

There was such an amazing balance of suspense, friendship, love & so much action that I was literally glued to my kindle. Book 1 left me with questions that were answered in this book but now I have more & I definitely need a book 3 😍

I’ll leave the tropes below 💜 this is a must add to your TBR if you love paranormal romance or any of the following tropes ✨:

⚔️Unique system of magic
✨Found Family
⚔️Paranormal romance
✨Cute corgi from hell who cooks
⚔️Witches
✨Werewolves
⚔️Fated mates
✨Charming half-fae MMC
⚔️Strong empowering FMC

The continuation of Alex and Finn's journey is both thrilling and heartwarming. After the emotional turmoil of the first book, it's empowering to see Alex rise stronger and more determined. Her fierceness and resilience truly shine through, reaffirming her status as an ultimate badass heroine.

Finn complements Alex perfectly. His blend of humor, patience, and unwavering support creates a dynamic that feels genuine and deeply touching. He's the anchor Alex needs, helping her navigate her emotions and the complexities of her growing powers. And he's Fae, what else do you need!

What sets this installment apart is the rich expansion of the paranormal world. The inclusion of witches, werewolves, fae, deers and other supernatural beings adds a fascinating depth to the story, making the universe feel more expansive and intriguing.

The book’s climax leaves you hanging, eagerly anticipating the next book in their saga, I just hope it's not gonna be the love triangle trope cause NO. With its blend of intense action, mystery, and emotional growth, this story is a compelling read that keeps you hooked until the very end. I’m excited to see where Alex and Finn’s journey takes them next. Absolutely CAN'T WAIT!

Thank you Kristen for choosing me as one of your ARC readers, I was totally delighted being part of this experience and Alex's world!

I recently had the pleasure of diving into the second book in a highly anticipated romantasy series, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. From the moment I cracked open the pages, I was immediately drawn back into the captivating world the author has created.

One of the highlights of this book for me was the introduction of new characters particularly the bartending elf, protective wolves and designing witches that added an exciting supernatural element to the story. I’d love to say more but it would be a horrible spoiler. Trust me you won’t want to miss reading this 🔥

But perhaps my favorite character of all was the lovable corgi, Argo. His snarky attitude and spectacular culinary skills had me cracking up, and I couldn't get enough of his antics.

Overall, this book exceeded my already high expectations and left me eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. If you're a fan of romance, supernatural urban elements, and complex characters, this book is a must-read. I give it a glowing 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to see where the author takes us next in book number three.

After reading book 1 in the series, I was anticipating that this book would be just as descriptive and interesting. Turns out it was even better than the first book (I love that about a series). All the magic, action and mystery of book 1, but so much more than I expected. I really enjoyed the development of the relationship between Alex and Finn (he is such a sweetheart). The action/fight scenes had me breathless in the moment. The author had me feeling all the emotional pull and tug that Alex was going through with the way it was written. Argo the Corgi had a bigger role which I loved. The spice was spicing more in this book compared to book 1( a little bit of a slow burn, but when it caught fire, oh my, well done). Again I have to mention the illustration within the pages were so beautiful! The "found family" vibes was great too. I am now hooked on the series and anticipating bk 3, even though I was satisfied at the end of this book (HFN). Like bk 1, there was a sneak preview of the next book to come, and it promises to be so good.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and this is a voluntary review.

This is the second book in the Alex Bain serie, and i must be honoust it is better written than the first one. I think the author has grown in her writing. Where the first one was faster and had more speed in it, this one describes the surroundings better. The characters come more alive and you get to know them better. There is more depth in this story.

You read about a world that’s more than just Chicago. A world where there are fay, witches, vampirs and even werewolves. I love this world even more.

The story began with a unsolved murder, but this time a supernatural being is mudered gruesomely. Alex is seeking the help of Finn (a hot elf) while Lucas is out of the picture. Like the other book things get steamy, but this time the author builds the tension. You just want to read further and further to know how this ends and ofcourse will things get steamy between Finn and Alex.

One last thing I melted when Argo said: “But I love you Alex. And you don’t even know what that means for one such as myself. But I do. You’re my, my girl.” Always protecting her and being there for her even if he just a Corgi.

4.5 stars! The second in the Alex Bain series starts off with Alex kicking butt in the chocolate world but seems to be still recovering from the heartbreak of the ending of book one. Alex and Argo are still a fantastic duo, with Argo revealing more of himself and us learning of his original summoning. Add in Izzy and Otto, who you don't see often, but when you do, you can feel their connection and love. The bonus this book is Finn, he is a surprising addition to the team and brings many more surprises with him. But the way the author brings him into the story, it's as if he has always been there and in a way he has been. I still love the way Alex is always protecting those who are considered weaker than. I'm looking forward to what happens next, but I have some ideas already.

Book 2 is even better than book 1!
Lucas is gone. Alex's heart is broken, but she still has a job to do. TWO, actually!
Still running the Supply Chain at Sweet Temptations by day - she still works to keep the Humans safe from Chicago's blood suckers at night. After she spent 6 months drowning her sorrows at the local bar for non-humans, it seems like she's finally getting herself together - and she kind of has to. A new threat to Human's and Monsters alike is in town, and the only one that can help her infiltrate the supernatural scene is the hunky bartender that has been serving her the best red wine Chicago has to offer while she drowns her sorrows. Can she let go of the idea of Lucas long enough to open her heart? And does this new threat have anything to do with the Hidden Village of Flame?

This book has a bit more spice and the love interest is a little more of the story. And THIS love interest is a total Golden Retriever. So sweet!

4 stars. Spoilers ahead!!

I knocked one off because a large plot point of book 2 was the same as CC, however, I recognize lots of stories are retellings of others and overall the characters are compelling and there’s bigger overarching plot points I want to see play out. I already know I’ll read the next one when it comes out. I’m so curious about the dual bonds with Lucas and Finn and to see how the two of them meeting is going to play out. I need to know why the bonds are different colors too. Alex is such a great character and Argo is just the best, even when he makes bad decisions. Finn was lovely. I love his love for her and how he doesn’t turn away from any part of her. I also love seeing Alex explore her powers and learn more about her capabilities in conjunction with the bonds. I’m really excited to see what happens in the next book!

Omg and to think I loved Lucas in book 1 but then Finn comes along and omg😍 I’m swooning! I enjoyed book 1 a lot but book 2 is now my favorite! Finn is a broody half fae bartender that has been looking out for Alex as she drinks and process everything that happened with Lucas. It definitely doesn’t hurt that he’s drop dead gorgeous!
Death and dark obsessions picks up a few months from where we left off. Alex and Izzie are continuing to investigate crimes that are definitely of the supernatural variety but quickly come to realize that the focus has started to shift towards Alex and izzie.
Kristen has out done herself again throwing us back into Alex’s world and her adventures. If you love Buffy and the sookie stackhouse series I can guarantee you will fall in love with these books. Not to mention there is the cutest talking corgi demon around!

Once again, thank you Kristen for sending me the next installment of the Alex Bain series. I am honored to be given an ARC of this and let’s just say, I devoured it. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish.

I absolutely loved Finn whole heartedly. I enjoyed him and Alex’s chemistry. I love that they can be sarcastic, yet goofy with each other. I think this is what Alex needed in this book, after the heart break of the first book.

So many memorable parts in this book. Kudos with the jeep scene. But towards the end, a particular scene almost got me feeling a little misty. I loved the added art between chapters. They are beautifully done. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Just go read it!

Once again, impatiently waiting for book 3. 😜

I am so happy that this book picks up pretty much right where we left off.
Lucas has abandoned Alex and she is trying to pick up the pieces of her broken heart while still being boss bitch Barbie, and vigilante baddie.

Enter Finn, the bartender who has always been there send her home safely and listen to her drunken ramblings.

They form the PERFECT team to take on the supernatural forces still plaguing the streets of Chicago.

I am obsessed with Finn, sorry Lucas 🤷🏼‍♀️
He is sweet, and cares for Alex deeply but there’s a secret bad boy underneath which I totally dig.

The writing was done really well, moving seamlessly through the plot at a steady pace.

I just wanted to read MORE. And I will be eagerly awaiting book 3!

Arc Review:

Another Hit for Kristen Coar!! This is the second book in the Alex Bain series. We follow our badass FMC Alex Bain as she and her best friend Sergent Izzy Bliss battle to solve cases of a supernatural/ preternatural nature. Along with their friends Finn and Otto, they try to get to the bottom of some very extravagant murders. And of course, one can't forget Argo! Alex's adorable corgi who is a disguised imp.

Imagine CSI, and trueblood had a baby, and it is this book. I LOVED the character development, the slow burn romance, the spice 🌶🌶🌶 and oh the banter! More than once the banter between Alex and Argo had me in stitches. This book shows strength, love, sacrifice and much, much more.

This is more than simply a love story. There is drama, humor, mystery and so much more. There are many characters from many magical groups involved with this story and the interplay between the groups makes it even better. There are hints to possible connections with a character from a previous book in this series and I am interested to see how it turns out in the future. The rare graphic suggestion was handled with milder language, and I felt comfortable reading this around children. I was happily surprised with the length of the story. Often, I am disappointed because a book ends just as it is starting to take off. This one took me a few days to read, and I am a constant reader. I will be watching for what comes next.

Omg this book… just chefs kiss!

It was even better than the first; answered many of the questions I had there and opened up more doors for a third book. The author does such a great job of tying it all together, AND even digging deeper into her characters and their world within book 2.

We do need to spend a minute on Finn.. *swoon* He just gets Alex, is there for her and even has some great interactions with Argo who’s super protective of Alex!

All in all, I recommend reading and can’t wait to see what book 3 has in store :)

Death and Dark Obsessions was fantastic!

This is book 2 in the series and I love it so much! It became my obsession lol.. I stayed up all night so I could finish it because I couldn't put it down. It is so well written and the author makes the story so interesting it just draws you in. The characters are great and well written. I found out there is going to be a book 3 and I can't wait to get my hands on it!!! This is a series that I will also be buying the paperbacks copies as well to add to my bookshelf! I would highly recommend reading this series or adding to your TBR!

Really great follow up to the first in the series. This may also be one of those rare instances where the sequel is actually better than the original. The pace of this book was excellent and the slower build to the... erm... *climax* was sublime. The relationships felt more natural and organic, the characters were mostly dynamic, the danger was palpable... Solid read and certainly holds its weight with the top of the Urban Fantasy genre.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This one did not disappoint! I was super excited to join Alex again! Meet new people! Had me on the edge of my seat! I got my fix of Argo the sassy corgi. Side note I would squeal if there was merch built around Argo, like I would like take my money!!! Can’t wait to see what happens next! All I know is when the next one comes out I’m gonna lock myself in a room with a do not disturb. Sorry family, not really haha.

Super stoked that I got to review this ARC. So much better than the first. Loved every second of this book. Finn is perfect for Alex. I’m eager to understand how these bonds will work. I love me a love triangle troupe.

Coar really stepped up the storyline and characters in this second piece of the saga. The writing was done so well, the humour was chef’s kiss, the emotions real and descriptive insights, amazing. Argo being bossy was one of my highlights.

The artwork was done so beautifully and helped paint the picture of the scene.

Look forward to book 3.
